Don’t let anyone crush your dreams! Whatever you want to achieve, no matter how hard it might seem, you owe it to yourself to read this book.
Undaunted will inspire you to move past your fears and defy the doubters. It doesn’t matter whether you feel confident; it matters what you actually do.
Author Kara Goldin turned her unsweetened flavored water into one of the most successful beverage businesses of our time and has been named one of InStyle’s Badass 50, Fast Company’s Most Creative People in Business, Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Entrepreneurs and EY Entrepreneur of the Year for Northern California.
Undaunted is a rare opportunity to gain insights and proven advice unlike anything you’ll find in the conventional business press. Kara combines real honest stories from her life with observations that might just change how you think about your own.
Whether you want to get healthy, start a company, break an addiction, find a new career or just grow in life, Undaunted will inspire you to just go for it and help you find the courage to get there.
As she started to achieve her goals, Kara found herself being called “fearless”, “confident” and even “unstoppable,” but nothing could be further from the truth. In Undaunted she shares real stories about her own fears and doubts, the challenges she encountered and what she did to overcome them to eventually build a great business and a life she loves.
Her secret? Be Undaunted. Deal with your fears. Move forward despite uncertainty. Turn criticism into motivation. Just go for it!
Setbacks will come, but Kara shows you can learn from failures and frustrations and keep advancing toward your true purpose. What if not having “the right” credentials or vast industry experience was the secret to making things happen? And what if we didn’t let our fear of failure stop us?
Part autobiography, part business memoir and lots of insights on self-development, Undaunted offers inspiring stories that impart lessons that any reader can apply to their own path. While most motivational business and life books try to offer quick fixes, Undaunted focuses on long-term success, showing you how to take control of breaking down barriers and moving forward. Undaunted won’t solve your problems and challenges. You will. But it will help you see through other’s experiences that it’s possible to do so.
- Have an idea for a product or business you want to start
- Just need a little motivation to take control of your professional career
If so, do yourself a favor and read Kara Goldin’s incredibly helpful business memoir, Undaunted. In it she shares how she built her top-selling unsweetened water product, Hint, from an idea in her kitchen to a huge national brand. One of the keys to her success has been her willingness to ask questions and cold call strangers, following the old adage, “what’s the worst that could happen?” Trite - yet wise - words.
On a personal note, about 10 years ago I had to cold call Kara myself to see if Hint would be interested in developing a tie-in marketing partnership with one of the movie campaigns I was working on for 20th Century Fox. Not only did she take my call and engage in a series of follow up emails with me, she was prompt, courteous, and extremely kind. From my experience, Kara Goldin not only wrote the book, but she’s taken a page from it.
4.5 stars
I received a gifted copy of the (author-narrated) audiobook from HarperCollins Leadership via NetGalley. Undaunted is out now and is currently available on the Hoopla library app.
Undaunted Overcoming Doubts and Doubters is unique advice for entrepreneurs. Kara Goldin is the founder of a Hint fruit infused water. I wasn’t aware of her story and have never tried the water, but this audiobook sounded interesting to me. The book was so good. Goldin gave a lot of useful advice. The advice is from someone that created her business with her husband without being rich. Most self-help entrepreneur books give advice that would be useful if you have a financial backer already or are independently wealthy. Undaunted gave advice that anyone could use. Goldin gave a lot of interesting real world examples and really explained her story. Goldin did not hide her company’s failures but was very open about them and how they turned them around. I recommend Undaunted Overcoming Doubts and Doubters.
Thank you NetGalley and Harper Collins Leadership for Undaunted Overcoming Doubts and Doubters.
I really enjoyed this inspiring and down-to-earth roadmap to success by Hint Water entrepreneur and disrupter, Kara Goldin. Her entrepreneurial path and innovations are so intriguing, and she's a great narrator of her own life. (I listened to the audiobook - her narration is warm and down-to-earth, just like you'd want a girlfriend who is also a hugely successful businesswoman to be.) You get to hear a lot about her creative process, and the way she arrived at some of her great ideas, which is not something these books always cover.
I love to hear the origin stories of female founders, and this is a great one. She gives you great ideas and business advice, and describes her own assertive and creative efforts to make contacts and promote her business in a guy-heavy business and startup world. She talks about how the idea for a healthier natural-flavored water actually originated in her own home with homemade sweetener-free water, and then blossomed to the success story of Hint Water after she marched into Whole Foods and asked them if they'd stock it.
Kara has a lot of business knowledge and know-how, and in the audiobook you can really tell how much she wants to share it with you so you too can be successful. (She actually devotes an entire chapter of the book to urging others to share their knowledge, which she considers to be a part of her mission and purpose.) Throughout the book, Kara provides simple but very useful ideas like "show up," "just get started," "test the market," "face your fears," and "find partners you trust." She couples these with successful examples from her own life. (E.g.: she is afraid of heights but decided to hike the Grand Canyon. Better you than me, Kara!) Side note: I notice myself calling her "Kara" throughout this review, and I think that's because of the friendly conversational style of both her narration and her writing. You really feel like you know her and like her on a personal level by the end of the book.
This is a completely accessible, practical, warm and inspiring business how-to from a female founder who knows her stuff and is more than willing to share her secrets to success. Highly recommended not only to people who are pursuing entrepreneurship and business, but also to anyone interested in an inspiring story about one woman making it big on a simple healthy idea. I
Thanks to Harper Collins Audio, NetGalley and Kara Goldin for the advance copy of this interesting and well-narrated audiobook. (Full disclosure: I love Hint Water! But I think I would have enjoyed this book the same whether I had tried the water or not.)
I am not an entrepreneur and have never, ever considered becoming one. Until listening to Undaunted by Kara Goldin, I didn’t even consider starting something, anything from the ground up or even consider my dream interests to be possible. Kara tells her entrepreneurial and personal story of business success and inspires anyone reading or listening to her story to do the same. I was inspired by Kara’s story. She was relatable and down to earth. She shared both the failures and successes in order to humanize her story and make it real. She shares her story with the negative in order to highlight the positive. If you have ever, or never, considered an entrepreneurial endeavor, take a listen to Kara’s story and be inspired. Thanks NetGalley for a copy of this audiobook to review.
I didn’t read this book because I want to launch a business or product, and I didn’t read it because I love Hint water. Until today, when I decided I needed to rush to the store and try this, I’ve never even tried Hint water. I live in a small town and it has been hard to come by, and I hated all the other water brands I tried (too sweet or tasted sour and rotten). Wow, was I pleasantly surprised! Now I’m a fan.
But this review is for the book, not the water. I read the story because I love reading people’s stories, their successes and setbacks and what made them successful, and I love the idea of being undaunted. This was a great story. She explains where she came from, how she launched a business out of her kitchen, and great tips that could help anyone in any situation whether it’s working for someone else, starting a business, or even your personal life. It’s a cross between memoir, self-help, inspirational, and business. The story was engaging. I couldn’t stop reading and had it finished within a day. It’s hard not to know something about the water, but to know about the creator was inspiring to read. It doesn’t push the water or the company, but I’m grateful to know more about a product I have now fallen in love with. She’s a great writer, and it was interesting to learn so much about product creation and distribution.
She also talks about courage, facing doubters, and overcoming setbacks and fears. Inspiring and encouraging to see all the things we can accomplish if we just do so. Also great examples in how we should treat people. An interesting, all-around read that I highly recommend.
While I am now more educated about the behind the scenes process of making and launching a water brand, want to get a bottle of Hint, and admire Kara's tenacity, I didn't find this book particularly amazing given its high ratings so far. It's not as reflective as I had hoped, a lot of the undaunted actions came from Kara's innate personality and unwavering will, which is applaudable but not educational. I wish there were more insightful reflections on how decisions were made rather than "I don't accept no's." Also, I don't think this is well-written. It's okay if the words are simple, it could be like a friend telling you a story, but instead, this book sounds like a chronology of what happened. Only informative, lacked excitement.
I devoured this book. Undaunted is a narrative of the author's journey that almost feels like a movie. Kara tells her story, yet the book is filled with business tips along the way. This book is not as much about balancing life and work; it's more about the story of building a business from the ground up.
One of the parts of the book that stuck out to me was when the author approached an executive and said (I'm paraphrasing), "You're doing a good job. But you must be bored because you've mastered your job. That means it's time to step up and do something more." I love the message of how we should never allow ourselves to be bored. That we should always focus on stretching and innovating because that's when all the great stuff happens.
"UNdaunted" was UNdoubtedly an UNbelievable and outstanding read.
Kara Goldin's story is "Exhibit A" for "Truth is Stranger Than Fiction". The fact that she started her company with no background in manufacturing/retail distribution/food science, while she was a mom with three children under the age of six AND was pregnant with her fourth child, is the first UNbelievable fact that she shares with readers.
I listened to the book's audio version that was read by Kara. I always love it when authors read their own memoirs and Kara's superb narration was no exception. Kara's spirit of enthusiasm was a real treat and provided an exciting new dimension to her story.
The book was very well organized; recounting the brand's story and the endless obstacles that Kara faced from the brand's inception to where it is today. Kara's determination to bring a product that she loved to market and her refusal to hear the word NO was very inspirational.
I am a working mom and I always found that I was the most successful/productive when I had excellent childcare at home. Kara made no mention of her family's nannies/daycare arrangements and this surprised me because her book was a complete "tell-all" of almost all aspects of her life. --- and, to me, having excellent childcare is a very important component of one's success -- whether they are a dad or a mom.
Thanks to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I highly recommend this book and wish Kara continued success with her company.
"Being undaunted is understanding what your fears are—deciding when it's important to face up to them, preparing yourself to confront them, and then working through them. When you do, two things happen. First, you put that particular fear in its place. You might not completely overcome it, but you can cut it down to a manageable size. Second, and even more important, you gain the confidence to overcome any fear, any obstacle that might stand in your way. That's the key. The more success you have at taking on your fears, the more confidence you have to take on others. It's a virtuous circle." -Kara Goldin, Undaunted.
Before I began this audiobook, I did not know anything about the Hint company and have never tried their product. I finished this audiobook in one day because it was refreshing to hear the honest and inspiring journey Kara forged while creating her company Hint. I love how she never wavered from her values or beliefs with her company and products. Her lesson on being "undaunted" can be applied to anyone's personal or business-related goals or dreams.
Thanks to Kara Goldin, I feel even more inspired to achieve my own personal and professional goals. Of course, I needed to go out and experience this Hint water for myself after this audiobook. It is delicious and very refreshing! I enjoyed other sparkling brands of water, and now Hint will be among my daily choices!
Thank you #NetGalley and #HarperAudio for this free copy for my honest review.
I listened to this audiobook (narrated by the author) and found it taxing. I was unmotivated to finish because the narration grated for me. There is a reason that people prefer voice actors to authors. Stick with what you do well.
This is a memoir-esque story of how Kara Goldin became a big deal at AOL and then founded and grew Hint water. The basic takeaway here is that "no" means try again. Essentially Goldin just assumed everything would work out for her and... it did.
An amazing entrepreneurial story. The book is a field manual for building a successful business and managing a family and a career. Kara shows great vulnerability in telling her story, intermixing her rocky moments of self doubt and frustration with her breakthrough successes.
Kara and her husband and business partner, Theo, are true David's, taking on the Goliath "sugary drink" industry and in doing so, have created a beverage alternative that is improving the health of thousands of consumers. The story of the courage and persistence it took to build this brand is compelling reading.
Starting a company is no easy feat, but to start a beverage company? You have to be out of your mind. Yet, Kara went ahead and created Hint - which I need to try once I get to travel to the States again.
This book is extremely motivating as Kara writes about her life and creating Hint. She talks about all the doubters, the misogynistic CEOs who told her it can't be done, and how she still challenges herself everyday in her business. It is an inspiring account of how to tackle an age old industry that has been feeding us Sugar and going against the grain when you believe in something so passionately.
I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to start their own company, or simply wanting to change the world!
This is a good business & a bit biographical book. I was already a big fan of Hint water prior to reading it, when our kitchen was being remodeled & we did not have running water for a couple weeks we drank it by the case, quite literally. I don’t mind tap water but after reading this book, hearing about Flint, MI & reading Erin Brockovich’s “Superman’s Not Coming” I’m obsessed with clean fruit essence infused water made by Hint. Needless to say we have a reverse osmosis machine in our new kitchen. I listened to this book on audible so I could hear the authors own words. I like her a lot, I think she could be my friend or we might be in a networking group together. Jumping into a business she felt passionate about even though she had no experience working in the food and beverage industry was eye-opening. The fact that she and Theo did it with small children at home I could identify with this & them driving all those cases around the Bay Area in their Jeep made me chuckle. I have subscribed to hint water now for almost a year yet I had never tried the other products that they offer? I don’t want to put in too much but the story of her interaction with the lead Starbucks buyer was classic selling. Undaunted convinced me that I need to try the other natural offerings: hand sanitizer, sunscreen, deodorant. I’m passionate about the environment and want to leave the world a better place for my kids which I think Kara does as well. Her mention of Alzheimer’s & it’s ties to something as basic as the aluminum added to over the counter deodorants was something I had heard of from a friend who fought & won breast cancer. I have not liked most natural deodorants I’ve tried but the Hint version in lemon eucalyptus sounds lovely. Plus her story of her son asking for more pineapple sunscreen while on vacation also had me smiling. She’s a great saleswoman for her company & products. More women should run multi million & billion dollar companies. Kara is a great advocate for this fact and a fun story teller.
Absolutely inspiring. Loved reading about Kara Goldin's entrepreneurial journey! Kara is the definition of "Undaunted" having been told at the onset, her vision to create delicious-tasting healthy water was an impossibility - she determinedly pursued her vision, no matter how many or what size hurdles were put in her way. This book is inspiring, funny (I spit up my Hint laughing out loud at one part), heart-warming and educational. I would highly recommend this book to anyone already on or considering an entrepreneurial journey.
Thank you, Kara, for sharing your career journey with us! As an entrepreneurial CEO myself, I am really drawn to memoirs like "Undaunted" and found this book to be a warm and heartfelt account of what it takes to push your boundaries and build a brand you believe in. This book is a swift, enjoyable read and acts as a mentor of sorts to anyone who might be considering how they too can start a business.
I always love when an author narrates their own book. I loved listening to kara’s struggles and breakthroughs while making hint water. She goes very in depth about how she got to where she is today and everything she had to overcome to get where she is. Jumping through hoops and never giving up finally put her on the map. It was very interesting learning about how to get a product that she made in her kitchen to be bottled and sold in major grocery stores. If you’re into learning about business and women owned businesses this book is perfect for you!
2.5 stars rounded up. While I can appreciate what the author has been through as a female entrepreneur, there was nothing interesting about the story. The whole thing is generic self-help sayings while the author pats herself on the back. I would never have finished it if I didn't get it for free to review. I wanted to like it so much but just didn't (just like Hint water).
A Must-Read Book! If you like Shoe Dog then you must read this. An amazing story on how Kara Goldin built an amazing life-changing company in Hint. I couldn’t put this book down, I managed to finish 80% of it in one sitting. The book dives into Kara’s life and how she built a multi-million dollar company. Alongside the story, valuable lessons and insights on success are shared. You will face obstacles and doubters on your journey to success, this book will teach you how to stay undaunted along the way!
Take the journey with one of our country’s top entrepreneurs. In this quick read, Kara Goldin, Founder of Hint Water and a former AOL colleague of mine, tells her story while bringing you right along. What I loved about this book is that she didn't gloss over the many existential threats, fears and failings she faced along the way. Instead she talks about how, after the initial gut punches, she found a way forward by connecting to her mission and pushing through the fear. Great entrepreneurs find a way to get past their challenges and Kara makes it clear in Undaunted that anyone can do it and she wishes the same great success for you.
I really enjoyed this audiobook by Kara Goldin, which was about her business path to success and also about her home life. It was very inspirational and I loved the way in which she could juggle all of her family life and home life with her business life. I loved her strength and her great ideas for creativity and expansion. This book inspired me to work more on my business too and reminded me that I can be strong and do anything I put my mind to.
The narration of the book was very good and Kara has a lovely voice which is a joy to listen to.
Many thanks to the author, publisher and netgalley for a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
This was a super quick listen on audible. Absolutely loved learning about kara’s story of starting Hint Water. It felt relatable and was super interesting. She’s also incredibly inspiring. My only complaint would be that it wasn’t long enough. It would have been great to maybe have included more details. Would highly highly recommend.
I was given this book since she didn’t have muse to read it. I even felt inspired to spend two dollars on Hint (water infused with fruit) and hated the drink but loved the book. I loved learning and understanding her life while also feeling inspired myself. I’ve been in the dumps about myself lately and didn’t want to read at all for some days. This book helped get my emotions together and feel empowered for once this week. Thank you.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I listed to it as an audio book and got through it in just a few days. Kara is so inspirational. I love her take no BS attitude and her perseverance with basically everything she has tackled. I love Hint water and so does my 1.5 year old son. The flavor is amazing and just noticeable. I enjoyed learning Kara's story and.how she ended up with her own beverage company. I recommend this book!
I absolutely loved this book! As an avid fan of Hint and Kara’s podcast, I was eager to get my hands on this book — I found the book to be a wonderful summary of her adventure as entrepreneur, disruptive, mom, and adventurer.
I devoured the book over the span of a few days, and it’s inspired me to continue on my journey — even as fear or challenges get in my way!
Kara's story resonates, as a former AOL colleague, there at the beginning of interactive advertising she describes, learning so much and with aspirations to do more, leading me on my journey now as business founder. Kara's guidance on business and leadership, taking risks and keeping moving, was fun to read and helpful.
This is a story and many life lessons one -- this is an ultimate showing of love, perseverance, bravery, commitment, convictions, family, drive and so many more things. This book brings to light the reality of one very strong and committed woman and her journey through making it to the top, playing with all the big guys, where she was told she dare not go, could not go - She proves that you should not dare tell a committed and convicted woman that she can't as she will prove she can. A business that started in the garage -- and now the business and the woman are international phenoms!!!! Ms. Goldin takes us through how she grew up, how she became to be the woman she is today -- this book does not tell you what to do, but it shows you how to think about your situation and how you can work through obstacles. This is a book about hope, about dreams, and about an unrelenting conviction to see an idea, an idea that would help millions beat the sugary drinks for health -- 100% healthy water. Thank you Ms. Goldin for you inspirational story!
I really enjoyed this book. Kara's journey, and work ethic, even at a young age was inspiring and unwavering. She has a go-getter-pick-up-the-phone-and-get-it-done attitude that I just love. After reading it I felt more motivated to take the ideas I get while showering (I know I'm not the only one who gets these) and follow through on some of them. I love hearing about how businesses develop, thrive and problem solve and this book dives deep into the background and logistics of it all. It was very fascinating and by the end I wondered how I could become friends with Kara in a non-stalker type way. She is a bad-ass business women, leader, innovator, mother and compassionate human being that I felt would be an excellent addition to a dinner party. A compelling book, a delightful journey of much deserved success.
Thank you NetGalley for this book in exchange for my honest review.
I am not a big fan of non-fiction but I have to say that I really enjoyed reading Kara Goldin's new book! It's a quick read but I got sidetracked so it looks like it took me awhile. I really read it in 4 days. I spent a lot of time highlighting tidbits that I came to realize she had highlighted herself throughout the book :-). It's a great story of how to succeed in business and how to overcome nay-sayers. Persistence, determination, curiosity and the will to succeed played a tremendous role in Kara's success. The fact that she built a brand, branched out to expand her offerings all along the lines of healthful living and added a social component to what Hint is doing is admirable. Her book is well-written, fun to read and provides many teaching moments. I feel like every college student that will eventually do a job search should take a page from Kara's book!! Kids today are used to immediate gratification and sometimes don't realize that even though the tools might be different for different generations, the same principles exist. Kara and how she and Theo built Hint is a perfect example of how hard-work, ingenuity, networking and good marketing pay off.
