I couldn’t go to sleep until I'd finished Blurred Lines.
I love finding a book that hooks me from the first sentence, makes me fall in love with the characters, and holds me on the edge of my seat throughout every twist and turn. This is one of those books for me. While Blurred Lines explores some dark themes, it is done in such a tasteful manner that I would be comfortable allowing my young teen to read it. Blurred Lines is an extremely powerful story of a young woman (Bailey) trying to start over when her world is turned upside down after her parents’ tragic deaths.
This supporting cast of characters is excellent. There are so many well-developed characters in this book. Howard does a fantastic job of differentiating between the point of view of each of them. I could attribute every single character to someone I know personally and felt as though I was sucked in and part of the cast. I found myself rooting for almost all of the characters (does anyone ever really like the villain?) with every page turn. It is hard to pick a favorite, since I do believe that there are several characters who seem to help piece Bailey back together.
One of my favorite aspects of Blurred Lines is the “playlist” at the end. Howard includes a list of songs that gave her inspiration for characters and scenes as she journeyed through the story. After I finished reading the novel, I listened to the playlist. Holy cow, I could picture characters and scenes from the book that seemed to match every song on that list. It was unreal.
While there is closure, when I got to the end of Blurred Lines, I found myself wanting more. I wanted to dig more into the lives of the supporting characters. Thank goodness Sherry Howard has decided to do just that. I am so excited to read book #2 of the series. I absolutely plan to stick with this series as I am intrigued by the secondary characters and am a huge fan of the easy to follow style of writing. I recommend this novel to anyone who likes contemporary fiction and young adult (maybe teen) novels dealing with sensitive subject matter. Even though Blurred Lines is Howard’s debut novel, she already demonstrates total control of the style and story. Read it. You won’t be disappointed.
