Queer Theories: An Introduction

This is a short and accessible introduction to the complex and evolving debates around queer theories, advocating for their critical role in academia and society. The book traces the roots of queer theories and argues that Foucault owed an important debt to other European authors including the feminist and homosexual liberation movements of the 1960–1970s and the anticolonial movements of the 1950s. Going beyond a simple introduction to queer theories, this book situates them firmly in a European and Italian context to offer a crucial set of arguments in defence of LGBTQI+ rights, in defence of the freedom of teaching and research, and in defence of a radical idea of democracy. The narrative of the book is divided into three short chapters which can be read independently or in sequence. The first chapter argues that queer theories are rooted in the critical philosophical tradition, the second presents a critique of heterosexism and the binary inherent to the gender-sex-sexual orientation system, and the third chapter sketches a history of the queer debate. The book offers a useful typology of queer theories by sorting them into three basic Freudo-Marxism, radical constructivism, and antisocial and affective theories, clarifying the complexities of the nature of the debates for undergraduates. The book is both accessible and original, and is suitable for both specialist researchers and undergraduate students new to queer studies. It will be essential reading for those studying philosophy, sexuality studies and gender studies.

Es un libro extremadamente complejo, tener formación en filosofia de Butler y de Focault ayuda, ya de allá entiendes mejor las complejidades de sus filosofias de género y sexualidas como dispositivo de poder. La primera parte del libro te hace una introducción sobre que es la filosofía crítica política, posteriormente te presenta todos los abanicos de posibilidad en lo que concierne el sexo, el género y la orientación sexual, criticando el binarismo y la heterosexualidad obligatoria. (Hasta aquí todo bastante entenedor). Finalmente, los elementos de la teoria queer, de una complejidad bastante grande.

A veces me ha dado la sensación de que el libro es, en realidad, dos textos separados que se han unido para la publicación, con su diferente tono, enfoque e incluso público: por una parte, una explicación de los orígenes de las teorías queer (desde la filosofía política a las teorías críticas, desmenuzando estos conceptos) mucho más accesible; por otra parte, un análisis, bastante más denso a ratos, de los elementos de las teorías queer.

Sin embargo, lo he disfrutado mucho y esa manera de ir complejizando (y en parte complicando) los debates y discursos de las teorías queer no solo facilita elegir hasta dónde quiere llegar quien lea el libro, sino que también creo que es especialmente necesaria para confrontar ciertas posturas poco informadas y simplistas sobre la(s) teoría(s) queer presentes a día de hoy en algunos ámbitos.

È una buona guida. Non saprei dire se risulterebbe davvero utile per chi fosse a digiuno di teorie queer, dal momento che la maggior parte dei temi mi era già mediamente familiari (ad es. non sono sicuro di aver compreso la posizione di Leo Bersani verso il costruttivismo). Ma a parte questo mio dubbio personalissimo, libro ben scritto.
