Davide Reviati fin dai tempi del collettivo VACA (Vari Cervelli Associati), fondato con i compagni dell’Istituto per grafici Albert Steiner,
si occupa di editoria e cinema. Come illustratore lavora, fra gli altri, ai libri “L’Hospidale de’ pazzi incurabili” (Essegi,
1990) e “Bestiario dell’impegatto” (Vaca, 2001) e collabora alle riviste Vaca Fujeton, Kaos, Interzona, Selene, Blue,
Periodico, Tratti, Nonzi, Inguine MAH!gazine, ma compare anche su quotidiani, Il Manifesto, La Stampa, L’Unità.
Nel fumetto esordisce con “Ahi ahi Anselma” (VACA, 1995) e contemporaneamente si occupa di sceneggiatura

“Dimenticare Tienanmen” (Becco Giallo, 2009) e “Sputa tre volte” (Coconino Press-Fandango, 2012), per cui riceve
diversi riconoscimenti: il “Premio Attilio Micheluzzi” come miglior fumetto alla XII edizione del Salone internazionale
di Napoli, il premio Lo Straniero, il premio Boscarato, il premio Micheluzzi. Reviati si dedica anche alla pittura.
Nel 2003 una serie di dipinti sull’infanzia, ai quali lavora da tempo, ispirano
il progetto “Bambini - azione di teatro, pittura e luce”, che debutta al 33° festival Santarcangelo dei Teatri.

A Stunning Read

This book was an absolute delight. While it's hard to capture everything it covers, at its heart, it’s a coming-of-age story that brilliantly portrays the irreverence of youth, complex relationships, wild moments, and the intricate dynamics between people, neighbors, and the local community.

It also sheds light on the prejudice faced by the Romani people, often referred to as Gypsies. We gain insight into their history and suffering, especially under Nazi Germany—an aspect of the Holocaust that’s frequently overshadowed by other atrocities.

The artwork and visual storytelling are simply breathtaking, making this a must-read for anyone who appreciates comics tackling real-life issues.

*Sputa tre volte* è la storia della giovinezza di Guido, un uomo emiliano cresciuto fra gli anni '70 e '80; la sua voce narrante fuori campo ci presenta episodi significativi della sua vita, come la malattia del padre, le sbronze con gli amici, i sogni ad occhi aperti e le scorribande in campagna. Sin da subito, però, la storia di Guido si intreccia a quella della famiglia zingara che vive in paese: genitori scampati al genocidio nazista, fratelli maggiori poco raccomandabili, una sola figlia femmina, Loretta, che tutto il paese disprezza per i suoi disturbi psicologici. In un modo o nell'altro, tanti momenti importanti della vita di Guido passano per il confronto con gli zingari, queste persone estranee e temute che, però, dimostrano di avere una propria cultura degna di rispetto.
Dal mio punto di vista, il romanzo dà il suo meglio quando fa divulgazione sulla storia e cultura gitane e si concentra su Loretta; la storia di Guido, invece, è un po' scialba, un'ennesima retrospettiva nostalgica su un'Italia che non c'è più e che, alla fine, risulta fine a sé stessa.

To w zasadzie lokalna opowieść o pogardzie w stosunku do mniejszości, będąca odzwierciedleniem okrutnej historii, w której Romowie byli jedną z dwóch grup etnicznych prześladowanych przez nazistów z powodów rasowych. „Spluń trzy razy” mówi o ofiarach i ich oprawcach, a także demonizowaniu, niezrozumieniu i strachu przed obcym. To jednocześnie komiks inicjacyjny, w którym dorastanie w surowej i często brutalnej rzeczywistości, rekompensują zachodnie wzorce popkulturowe. W ten sposób dla głównego bohatera istotniejsze od tego, co mówi ojciec, jest to, co powiedziałby John Wayne. Fabułę ozdobiono dynamiczną, surową, lecz pełną artyzmu kreską z wplątanymi pomysłowo metaforami. The borderline between childhood and adulthood, where responsibility for your own actions conflicts with the carefree attitudes of youth, is a difficult place to traverse. For some, it takes time to identify what path through adulthood they are going to take, especially when it’s easier to defer that decision for more hedonistic pursuits. In Davide Reviati’s novel we are thrown into the adolescent travails of Guido, and his friends Moreno and Katango, as Guido’s eyes are slowly opened up to a wider world that’s just upon his doorstep.

Living in a rural community in Italy, Guido and his friends are struggling through high school, disenchanted and disinterested with their lot. Their distractions are one another’s company, drinking and the nearby Riviera town. Their focus is short term, and anywhere but where they live. So it’s little wonder that they pay such scant regard to the Stancic, a family of Romani gypsies. The rest of the town either shuns them or berates the family, blaming them for the community’s every problem. But the Stancic family doesn’t stay unnoticed by Guido and his friends for long. Slowly their lives intertwine, revealing a people who have suffered gravely under Marshal Tito during the Second World War and who, even now, remain outsiders despite living alongside the townsfolk for so long. Ultimately it is this fragile bond between the teenagers and the Stancic that lifts the boys to adulthood.

Reviati’s tale is powerful and personal, occasionally straying into more abstract storytelling but always delivering an honest rendering of what it’s like as you prepare to leave childhood behind. The depiction of the Stancic family, and the town’s prejudice, feels brutally honest, and is brought into sharp relief by the historical context. Light on text, the story is balanced by the extraordinary illustrations. I for one am so accustomed to polished, finely detailed penmanship that at first glance the book’s illustrations look hurried and unfinished. In fact, they are simply free and loose, capturing a palpable buzzing energy that makes every page feel like it’s in motion. Although sometimes stark, it’s striking, and although sometimes bleak, it’s vibrant.

Spit Three Times is, perhaps, unlike any graphic novel you’ve ever read, and for that reason alone it deserves your attention.

The story of the interactions between an Italian town and a Roma family living at the outskirts, Spit Three Times is a dreamlike graphic novel of loosely connected vignettes in the lives of Guido, Moreno, Maurizio, and Eliseba. The book doesn't hold back, showing the very real bigotry towards the Roma, while also discussing the Porajmos - the genocide of an estimated 500,000 European Roma by the Nazis.

The black and white pen art is pointedly representative of the dark and light in the story, which draws you in and won't let go.

Rom-agna.

Gruppo di amici cresce in Romagna e, da ragazzi, viene a contatto con la comunità rom del posto: vita, amori, gite, zuffe, odio, empatia.

Le tavole di Reviati sono SPETTACOLARI. Impreziosisce il tutto la storia breve in appendice, che racconta la storia recente del popolo rom e, nel particolare, la biografia di Bronisława Wajs (Papusza), poetessa dimenticata.

Una storia di "zingari" e di ragazzi in formazione. Disegni a volte goffi, altre potenti e lievi. Molti i momenti memorabili (spesso sono gli intermezzi di una o due sole pagine) per un tributo doveroso a una minoranza da sempre calpestata. Bella scoperta Reviati.

Guido comes of age in mid-20th century Italy with his crappy friends who treat the local Romani family like shit, including the sexual and physical abuse of a teenage daughter with possible mental health or developmental issues. We're supposed to sympathize with the narrator because he is slightly sensitive to how messed up things are while going along with it all?

The story is told in a frustrating, obtuse, and jumbled manner with symbolic sequences that just grate on me. The art looks sort of interesting but often interfered with my ability to identify the characters.

There's also a bare bones biographical sketch in the back about Bronislawa Wajs, the Polish-Romani poet known as "Papusza."

A highly captivating read. There are a lot of threads that weaves the main story together in this book and just when I think I've figured it out something comes along to tip it on its head. A lot of it is written like poetry and a lot of it is raw poetry. The illustrations are simple but convey a lot of meaning in very few strokes. I think much is left to the reader to figure out and it will leave you with a deeper understanding of the two worlds that often collide in awful ways with each other. However, there was one thing that stood out but was never explained; what happened to Annalita? The first chapter seems to be the foreshadowing of the rest of the story. Guido holds a lot of darkness in him but is it all necessarily bad? Darkness doesn't have to be bad and maybe that's why they turned into birds. While there is a strange dreamlike quality and it certainly calls the reader to question a lot of what is going on it also calls into what the reader thinks they know about Romanis, the Holocaust, the Nazis and about what people consider their neighbours and their everyday lives. Why do we do the things we do and think they way we do? The children were curious by a field near to them that they dub "Field of Miracles", which was obviously a death field, they're never curious by what is around them. The women are unfortunate bystanders, Annalita disappears and Loretta/Eliseaba is a bystander who is abused and no one says anything. Saying nothing says a lot and when you chose not to say anything a lot happens that could be prevented. History happens in silence. Silence is compliance. Silence takes the voices away of those that could speak and yet, silence is loud and vicious: "We say nothing" and all the things unsaid make and break the lives of the characters in this book. For some they're so close to dying but they live on top of death and so live, and yet, are they alive? They live in the shadows wolves among them, beneath a glaring shame filled moon, eyes staring out, without curiosity.

In de tweede wereldoorlog (1940-1945… er zijn mensen die dit niet weten) streefden de nazisten naar een zuiver Arisch ras. Zuiver. Een van de te elimineren bevolkingsgroepen waren de zigeuners. Omdat die nergens geregistreerd stonden was en is het onmogelijk te achterhalen hoeveel van hen afgemaakt zijn, geëlimineerd. Er wordt gesproken over 800.000 tot 1.000.000. Andere “bronnen” spreken over “slechts” 30 of 40.000. Het cijfer dat het meest gehanteerd wordt is 500.000, een half miljoen. Davide Raviate vertelt het op een van de bladzijden van zijn boek “Sputa tre volte” – “Spuug drie keer” – tegen de achtergrond van prikkeldraad, een wachttoren van een concentratiekamp en bloedsporen in de sneeuw.

In de graphic novel “Sputa tre volte”, vertaald in het Engels, het Frans en het Duits, doet Raviate een poging een vorm te geven aan de bijna totale afwezigheid van erkenning (kennis?) dat er tijdens het nazibewind een tweede bevolkingsgroep is geweest die met uitroeing werd bedreigd. Hij creëert daarvoor een dorp in de Italiaanse Povlakte, waar een groep zigeuners is neergestreken. Ze hebben een andere huidskleur als de dorpsbewoners, de haren gitzwart, ze hebben andere gewoontes. De dorpsbewoners reageren niet openlijk vijandig, maar er is sprake van een onzichtbare barrière die niemand wenst de doorbreken. Zigeuners en lokale bewoners leven naast elkaar, maar vooral langs elkaar heen. De keren dat er met elkaar iets ondernomen wordt verzanden telkens in onbegrip, geschreeuw, gesmoorde agressie. Maar wat gebeurt er als iemand van de ene groep iemand van de andere groep daadwerkelijk in doodsgevaar ziet?

Davide Raviate houdt ons een spiegel voor. Zijn boek stemt tot nadenken. Ja, nog steeds, ook na 80 jaar. Zijn platen bezorgen dankzij het zwaar contrasterende zwart-wit gehalte voor een constant dreigende sfeer, die perfect past bij het verhaal.

“Sputa tre volte” è un romanzo grafico intenso e potente, che narra di un’adolescenza vissuta nel ravennate tra scuola, bravate e problemi familiari. Il confronto qui, però, non è solo nel classico gruppo dei pari, no, qui c’è un altro gruppo, sempre presente nel margine delle storie delle varie generazioni: una famiglia sinti, con la sua “nidiata” di figli. C’è chi li odia e fa di tutto per cercare le risse, c’è chi li ignora, c’è chi li compatisce, c’è chi se ne approfitta (i ragazzini con un’ingenua cattiveria, gli adulti con consapevole malizia) e chi li tratta da pari.
È una storia scritta sui margini, appunto, un racconto di chi una Storia scritta non ce l’ha, ma è una storia che si interseca naturalmente con quelle di chi ci è vissuto accanto per tutta la vita. C’è qualcuno che si pone tante domande, ma non riesce mai ad esprimerle e finisce per soffrire della sua incapacità espressiva. C’è qualcuno che agisce senza pensare alle conseguenze sia che faccia del male o del bene.
Davide Reviati racconta una storia di normale violenza e sofferenza, una storia di crescita e cambiamento, una storia che tende a ripetersi uguale a se stessa nonostante passino gli anni. Perché non sempre le persone imparano; non sempre le persone crescono, nonostante il trascorrere degli anni; non sempre le giuste intenzioni portano a conseguenze positive e viceversa.
Il tutto è accompagnato da un tratto oscuro, “sporco” (non aspettatevi l’uso dei “puliti” retini per gli sfondi), che spesso preferisce accennare i lineamenti dei volti e disegnare in modo perfettamente definito un riccio. Notevole è il contrasto tra i lineamenti dei protagonisti italiani che sono spesso solo abbozzati, mentre sono le parole che li tratteggiano ed i volti dei protagonisti sinti che sono netti, mentre i balloon sono confusi, caotici.

Reviati fa letteratura di alto spessore. Sputa tre volte potrebbe stare benissimo fra le opere contemporanee che meglio racconti gli spazi di una certa Italia, gli spazi interrotti e frantumati fra centro abitato e centro abitato, le periferie delle città del nord in cui si cresce senza punti di riferimento a contatto con mille etnie e mille culture che non sanno riconoscersi fra loro perché non si riconoscono nemmeno in loro stesse.

L'italia di oggi nasce in questi spazi raccontati da sputa tre volte, in queste sale biliardo, in questi interminabili viaggi in auto per visitare le discoteche di una già decadente riviera romagnola, in queste pagelle sempre peggiori e in questi ultimi anni di scuola ripetuti, da cui non si scappa e non si esce perché dove vogliamo andare? Cosa ci aspetta dopo?

Disegnato disgustosamente bene, espressionista, costellato da splendido volti rugosi (ogni ruga un racconto).

Sputa tre volte merita il vostro tempo.

Veramente bello. Una scoperta piacevolissima.
Un autore che riesce a soddisfare sia l'occhio, con lo stile grafico che convoglia moltissime emozioni, che la mente con la narrazione che invoglia alla riflessione. Sia il tratto che il testo sanno essere crudi, violenti, ma anche umani e vivi.
Quello che rende speciale questa storia è, oltre la capacità dell'autore di usare il disegno in modo molto comunicativo, il tema affrontato, l'affresco dipinto sul crescere in una periferia italiana, i pregiudizi e la violenza che permeano questa realtà rurale nei confronti degli Altri (gli zingari/rom/sinti ecc.), e le radici di quest'odio quotidiano che affondano nella Storia.

This is the first book I've read that talks about internment camps in Italy, and specifically how it affected the Roma and Sinti people. Absolutely wild to think they were not asked to testify at the Nuremberg trials or any subsequent Nazi trials for crimes against humanity. And to this day we do not know how many Roma people died from this, due to a complete lack of a system for censusing this population. Anywhere from 30,000 to 1 million Roma people may have been killed, but mostly it's agreed at 500,000 or 1/2 million people.

And all this in a young adult coming of age book that demonstrates the racism that still exists towards Roma and Sinti traveler people.

If I could rate the artwork in this book it is definitely a 5/5

As for story and plot, I found the the artwork carried me through the book, but that at the end I was left with the feeling that more hadn’t happened in the 500+ pages. How the main characters treat some people in this book is despicable, and they don’t show much growth or evolution by the end. I also found the books greatest strength was also it’s weakness, the sporadic and haphazard surrealist story progress kept me wanting to know more, but left me feeling as though the plot had holes or was incomplete/not very dimensional.

Stilisticamente perfetto bellissimo il miglior fumetto netto in quanto disegni. A livello di storia trama un po’ un meh. non mi lascia molto, è frammentato, ma non chiude e non lo trovo incisivo. Vuole anche parlare dei pregiudizi verso assenti, al tempo stesso parlare della sua vita, è un racconto di formazione, ma non chiude molte sottotrame ( il campo dei desideri, Loretta regole alcune simbologie come la pantera del bambino sono difficili da interpretare)

Les dessins, en particulier les visages en gros plan, sont vraiment impressionnants. Mais l’histoire est tellement décousue (on a parfois l’impression de lire une succession de scènettes), que j’ai fini par décrocher complètement. Il y a de la poésie dans ce livre, oui, mais là aussi, elle rend le récit trop abstrait pour qu’on puisse le suivre. Je n’ai donc pas accroché à l’ensemble.

Il racconto di un’adolescenza, inframmezzato di flashback all’infanzia, tra sogni e realtà. La labile amicizia del protagonista con Moreno (detto Grisù) e il rapporto con il padre si frappongono al contatto con i ragazzi romanì, Alpacino e Loretta, emarginati dalla vita di paese e oggetto di dicerie che verranno svelate solo alla fine.

Interesting take on human nature, memory, and cross-cultural issues in 2oth century Italy. This might be one of the few times I've read a book that mentions the Italian internment and death camps modeled after Nazi Germany's --and used on Roma & Sinti traveler peoples.

It's a dark read that ever really lets go of its darkness.

Meritorio l'impegno dell'autore di ricordare certe drammatiche ingiustizie passate e presenti, ma la storia non mi ha convinto e, nonostante lo stile di disegno mi piaccia (molto Gipi), a volte è complicato capire chi siano i personaggi, per i tratti troppo indefiniti dei visi.
