Thomas J. Torrington is teaching me not to form too many expectations about his books. I’ve read all three, and while the writing style is similarly classic across his catalog, the topics vary widely. I enjoyed venturing into thriller territory in THUNDER SNOW.

I’m attracted to stories of humans trying to conquer nature, and this was no exception—although, in the end, it was more a story of internal growth. Brody Chase’s story of being caught alone, on a mountain, in an historic winter storm, is compelling. However, such one-person stories can at times feel slow. Torrington avoids this issue by going back and forth between Brody and other characters, most often Brody’s panicked girlfriend and a sharp meteorologist.

I know little about meteorology—or snow, for that matter—but this story rings of truth. My geeky side loved learning some new facts. One example: eating snow isn’t a good way to stay hydrated when you’re cold. Torrington’s research shines throughout this book.

While I enjoyed the scientific basis of the story, it was the suspense that kept me reading. I couldn’t help but love Brody, despite his questionable-at-best decision to venture alone into the wild. In this human vs. nature story, I was rooting for the human—not to win, but just to survive.

I’m looking forward to Thomas J. Torrington’s future stories, and I hope they continue to surprise me in their variety.

This book is amazing. I love books that include nature. It is a mountion that I learned to ski at so when it closed I was SO SAD!!! I really hope it can open soon. Even when its closed once in a while me and my family make it up there to hike up, then ski down and it really is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Thunder Snow is a compelling tale of man vs. nature, risk, and coming of age. Set against the beauty and danger of fickle New England winter storms, the author paints a vivid picture of a young man, Brody Chase, who thrives on adrenaline despite warning signs in his work, personal and love life. His girlfriend Addison wishes he would grow up, but storm clouds form, and Brody is faced with life and death decisions, despite her warnings.

The imagery in Thunder Snow is clear and beautifully written, grabbing the reader into the story with amazing detail, especially relating to weather conditions and forecasts, and the rush of skiing adventure. The characters are well-developed and likable- like old friends. If you like a suspenseful, wintry adventure with some love and nail biting in-between, this book is for you.
Highly recommend this wonderful 3rd book by author Thomas J. Torrington.
