Jackson, Ellen. (2002). Sometimes Bad Things Happen. Brookfield, CT: The Millbrook Press, Inc.
Annotation: For preschoolers to second graders. This book was written to help kids cope when bad things happen. Ellen Jackson uses real photographs, taken by Shelley Rotner, to illustrate bad things that happen and emotions that they might bring up. On when of the pages, there are photographs of a police officer, solider, ambulance driver, and firefighter and the text on the corresponding page reads: "A few people do bad things. But most people want to make the world a better place for everyone." Jackson also shares different things that children can do when bad things, like give a hug or plant or flower to help offer ways to deal with bad things. Furthermore, young children love photographs of real people and they will be able to relate to the children in the photographs.
Personal Reflection: I like this book because young children often struggle with coping with their emotions and this book offers several ideas on how to help them deal with bad things. I also like how Jackson lets the children know that it is okay to cry and that something good will happen. When children are going through a difficult time, it is hard for them to have any hope. Additionally, I like that real photographs were used to illustrate the book, it makes the book more personal and relatable to children.
