I am a former adult entertainer, with a love of books, writing and humor. My job has given me a unique perspective on life. I spent twenty years as a stripper on and off and started writing as a way to shed light on a misunderstood industry and profession. Frustrated with the stereotypes often presented on talk shows, movies, and articles, my goal is to help paint a broader and more accurate picture of the profession. But also, to destigmatize and humanize those who choose to work in the adult entertainment industry.

I am active in the secular community and write and advocate for secular issues. My focus is on the separation of church and state, secular humanism and critical thinking.

My passion for writing began with nonfiction, but I have always loved horror fiction. Stephen King, Lois Duncan, and Clive Barker got me through some tough years growing up. I found an escape through those books along with countless others. My own fiction reflects those influences as well as my love for all things dark and maybe just a bit scary.

"On that island in the middle of the pacific, I had an epiphany. I discovered that life is right now. It's not tomorrow, it's not yesterday, it's right now. The future isn't here yet and is not guaranteed. The past is gone. Right now is the only time we have. Expose yourself to what is around you right now."

This is merely one of many pieces of sage advice that Erin Louis delivers at the end of 23 insightful chapters on topics ranging from taking and handling risks to the danger of conforming, taking responsibility, being altruistic, handling grief, questioning norms, and using logic. There are really too many subjects to mention. Louis even provides us with a very rational and sound explanation as to why it is critical to have pre-marital sex.

I absolutely loved this book and not just because I couldn't find anything I disagreed with. I could see quite a few people taking exception to the author's rants on religion and prayer but at the same time, Bill Maher and his disciples would be standing and applauding.

The writing is absolutely spectacular. Delivered in a self-deprecating and sardonic style, this is a woman who is clearly comfortable with her own thoughts and doesn't mind sharing them. I will admit that I didn't think I could learn very much from a stripper but there is a substantial amount of insightful information and advice that I have taken from this book. It's not too often that a book leaves me feeling so much richer for having read it, but this is one I will remember for a very long time. Fully deserving of its 5 stars!

I have to laugh as I read the synopsis again as it does Erin Louis and her book Expose Yourself a disservice. This book is nothing like Fifty Shades of Grey - I really liked this book and I hated Grey. Louis gives sound advice with lots of humor interjected throughout. Is there anything we do not really know in this book? No. But Louis gives one heck of a pep talk.

“...refusing to face uncomfortable truths about yourself and the reality you live in, is a terrific way to end up a bitter, unfulfilled and miserable person.” (Loc. 37)

Damn. For some reason this really hit me in the gut. The one thing I always try to be is honest with myself. When I volunteered for hospice, I noticed that people had not lived happy lives. They had not completed their bucket list. One gentleman lived in an ocean town and never saw the ocean.

Louis challenges people to be comfortable with themselves. I only question challenging their religion to do so. I am not a Christian, but I would not knock someone’s religious beliefs for multiple chapters to emphasize what they might be doing “wrong”. I think this is the wrong tact to take - just my opinion.

Louis reminds me of a Southern Aunt who gives you that frank talk in the kitchen. Listen, take what you need, laugh...and have a great life.

I received an ARC of this book and I am writing a review without prejudice and voluntarily.
