Unearthed is book one in the Death Seeker series by Cecy Robson.

I feel in love with Cecy Robson’s Weird Girls series and deiced to give her new Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Romance a try. I enjoyed the book, but I had trouble staying interested. Not sure if it’s just first book syndrome, but I’d read a few chapters, then put the book down for a few days, then pick it back up. Their where some areas that captured me and others no so much. I wasn’t as engrossed in this novel as I have been with her previous work.

In Unearthed we are introduced to a verity of characters. Their are several different kinds of Fae and concepts of Death. I like the verity, but at times it got to be a bit overwhelming; especially with Death. It sounded like some aspects of Death are good and some are bad, yet by the end the author made it sound like all the different kinds of Death where/are out to kill Olivia; expect Ryker who will protect her.

We meet our heroine, Olivia, right off the bat. She’s a Pixie with no wings and no magic, or so she thinks. She’s lovable, slightly clumsy, and has this spark, but she has this habit of fainting/blacking out when things got rough. This happened a few times in the story during the height of a battle scene and then we are moving onto the next day or a few hours later. I didn’t care for the fade to black moments.

Ryker our hero, is The Grime Reaper, Ankou, aka King of the Dead. He’s sexy and has this bad boy vibe going. He helps Olivia train and becomes her protecter. In return he want’s her to end his life. He’s been the Ankou far longer then was meant to be and the long life has taken it’s toll on him.

The background was interesting and I liked the premise, but I really needed some elaboration on what actually happened in Fae to make all the Fairy’s leave and come to earth to hid among the humans.

We are also treated to a few surprises along the way and the action scenes are fast paced. We also get some tender moments, but I wouldn’t call this novel a romance. At least not yet, but their is the possibility.

Unearthed is well written, with moments of very realistic humor, but overall, it was just ok. If you enjoy stories about Fae and magic then this series might be up your alley.

Rated: 3 Stars

A new series from an author who has a huge following and yes it’s another urban fantasy one but this time we get the Fae and the Grim Reaper ! Perhaps you are not surprised as the artwork does somewhat give away that nugget of information but there certainly are numerous surprises in this book. For a start our protagonist is Olivia a Pixie turned paralegal and she’s really quite a skilful multitasker . Add in the fact that the Fae are now living on Earth hiding amongst humans and then there’s the really odd thing and that’s all the numerous forms of death that are out to devour the souls of the surviving Fae !
This has a lot to recommend it and I think when it comes to Olivia you will either love her or hate her as she’s kind of a bouncy wee thing but can also seem incredibly well if brutal shallow. Awful things happen here that are quickly glossed over leaving Olivia with an impressive mission to actually train to take out the Alpha of the Death Hounds Honestly I wasn’t terribly sure exactly how training could help her but with Death by her side ( yep he’s a big, apparently gorgeous hunk of manhood) Olivia actually does get a handle on what was previously a dormant power. Unfortunately this didn’t really make an awful lot of sense to me as I’m still unsure exactly why Olivia has the power she does but hey ho let’s just go with the flow because, magic !
I liked that Olivia has interesting friends and I really enjoyed the back story of Death aka Ryker. What I didn’t like was the fade to black moments ( very Prisoner of Azkaban ) when Olivia was in grave danger and then bam we’ve moved on and she’s safe and yes it gets explained but bum it was aggravating. I think that’s partly why I’m rating this a four because I was actually enjoying the set up and the action so I felt terribly cheated. This does get wrapped up so don’t fear that there’s a huge cliffhanger because there isn’t but it’s left in a way that the author can expand this world and perhaps give Death and Olivia a much happier ending.
This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

INTERESTING PREMISE, BUT SOMEWHAT LACKING

I love a good paranormal, urban fantasy book and I have a particular love for all things Fae at the moment, so this book seemed like the perfect fit for me. And while it was interesting and certain parts were really enjoyable, there were some things that felt lacking.

"Even Death needs love."

THE THINGS I LIKED

Olivia: The slightly clumsy, yet lovable and vivacious main character is sort of a cliché. But sometimes, a character with those traits comes along that just hits the cliché right in the butt and makes you love it all over again. Olivia, this book's female MC, is one of those. (Lou from Me Before You is another!)

Premise: Death has taken over Fae and forced all its inhabitants to flee to Earth, where they have to live in hiding amongst ordinary humans. Now, if that isn't an interesting premise, I don't know what is!

THE THINGS I DISLIKED

Background: While the premise was interesting, I was really needing some elaboration and some more background information - what actually happened in Fae? What are the talismans? Where did Death come from? These are just some of the questions I am left with and that I had hoped this book would answer.

Damsel in distress: Yes, I really liked Olivia's spark! But she had this annoying propensity for fainting/blacking out when things got rough. Twice she did that at the height of a battle. That's a cliché I don't thing I'll ever like.

There doesn't seem to be a whole lot that Cecy Robson can't write, which is why not only is she one of my most favorite authors but also why I quickly grab every book from her I possible can. I also know, regardless of the genre or the topic, she will do it well and do it justice.

I normally shy away from books about the fae, with a few exceptions because most of them are so overdone and the same old same old but knowing what Robson can do with the mundane and same old same old, had me picking this up without hesitation and thankfully, once again, Robson pulled through and delivered something original and fun and oh so hard to put down.

I devoured this. Every. Single. Page. And just couldn't get enough. I was so sad when it ended and was already on the lookout for the next book. I can't wait for more, I so was not ready for this one to be over. I love these characters, this world, the concept and well, really, everything. Once again Robson blew it out of the park and created something that everyone can enjoy, lover of the fae or not.

This review was originally posted on Books of My Heart

Review copy was received from . This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Unearthed: A Death Seeker Novel has a premise where Fae creatures have come to earth to escape the Death that stalks their land and devours their souls so they can never rest.  It’s a cool premise to be sure and that was my draw in as I usually enjoy stories with Fae ties and I thought the added touch of death into the story could work really well since most of the time Fae are thought of as practically immortal.

I will have to say there are a lot of things that just weren’t my cup-a.  But first let's talk about what the story has going for it.

1 - Death, well at least this version of Death in the Grim Reaper was hot.  I enjoyed his character and liked the idea that even Death is looking to get out of his gig and wants to be set free.

description

2 - This story has Dragons.  I usually really like the addition of Dragons into a story as Dragons are cool.

3 – Olivia is likable with her love of pink, rainbow hair and prancing Pixie ways.  Even though she was so cliché, she was fun and I liked her.

Now some of the issues I had that made some parts of this less enjoyable for me might sound a bit nitpicky to you perhaps, but they nagged me.

1 – The Fae on earth included Pixies, Dragons, a Hydra, a nymph, a gargoyle, gremlins and elves.  Those are just the things we see. But I don’t really remember Dragons, Hydra and Gargoyles being part of any Fae mythos I’ve read before so they felt throw in willy nilly with no explanation of this Fae world.

2 – And speaking of no explanation, there isn’t exactly any backstory as to why one day Fae’s incarnation of Death decided to start killing Fae who were alive to eat their souls and hunting them to extinction.  It seems like there should be some reasoning there or a prophecy or something.

3 – The office Olivia works in seems like a CW version of a law office if you worked there with kids from your high school.  I mean some of the stuff was a little extreme and out of nowhere. It was entertainingly silly but I had a hard time buying into it.

4 – Vanessa the egg extractor.   Why? Why is there a sentient egg extractor?  What is she for? Why is she at the end during all of the fighting? I have no idea what the purpose of this thing was, why it hummed and why Human Grim Reaper Death has it in a box he took to the battle at the end.

5 – The very YA romance happening/not happening between Death and Olivia.  I want him/her and we can’t be together cuz reasons. The tension between them had its moments but overall it felt YA to me and very manufactured.

And last, but not least, when telling a story in first person I don’t like when the main characters passes out, only to come to later when the battle is over and other things have happened.  I give the author a pass to do this every once and awhile as sometimes it is necessary. But it happened multiple times in the same book and for me that is a huge no no and makes me feel like the author isn’t really trying.

For me this didn’t really work. But for a lot of my fellow reviewers it did and if some of the things I mentioned aren’t deal breakers for you than there is a lot of fun in this story to be had.

The story is entertaining and if I’d just come off of a really tense book, I probably would have enjoyed the levity in this story a little more. As is there were just too many holes for me to kick back and just enjoy the action that was happening.

Whenever I pick up a book written by Cecy Robson, I expect nothing but sheer awesomeness and Unearthed (Death Seeker) book 1, offered all that and more. Not only was it a unique and well-written story, it was awesome and captivating from start to finish.

The story was loads of fun. The interactions with the characters were both fun and solemn. Every moment felt real. I found myself invested in the lives of the characters. I feared for them in the face of danger and cheered them on in the heat of the battle. It was a pleasure spending time with these awesome characters, at least the good ones. My favourites are Olivia, Ryker, (main characters), Jane, Stevie and Marco (secondary characters). The evil ones were ok, but thank goodness, this is a fantasy, as I for one would not want to encounter those things in reality.

The attraction between the main characters leapt from the pages. The sexual tension was so thick not even a knife could penetrate it. There was so much going on Olivia and Ryker could not find time to give into the attraction. In addition, the baggage between these two proved to the biggest dampener.

The action was off the charts. The fight scenes kept me on the edge of my seat, and every moment leading up to those segments were so nerve-wracking.

I found myself immersed in the unique world the author created. Readers are introduced to a world where the King of Death and the Queen of Life were actual people and were attracted to each other. Also in this world Faes dwell among humans, not because they want to, but because their world had been destroyed by the Death Hounds and those who survived the wrath of the hounds managed to escape to earth, where they made a new life. This new life, however, was not without its challenges as they had to be on their guard at all times. they never knew when death will come for them. The death hounds were determined to destroy every living Fae.

Conclusion / Recommendation
This is an exciting start to the series, and I am eager to see what’s next in store for Ryker and Olivia. If you love fast paced and action packed stories with awesome characters, then I recommend you get a copy of Unearthed.

Unearthed is the first book in Cecy Robson's new Death Seeker urban fantasy series. She has created a world where the fae are living among us but humans have no idea about it because they're hiding in plain sight. Pixie Olivia lost her magic and her wings when she left her home realm and traveled to earth with her family and now she does her best to blend in by working in a law firm. Fae living in this realm have to keep their magic hidden at all costs or the death hounds will sniff them out and devour them, just like they did with Olivia's parents and sisters, so she is especially conscious about keeping out of trouble.

Of course some people just aren't capable of staying hidden and when a brush with death ignites powers that Olivia didn't realise she even had she finds it harder than ever to stay out of sight. But her new abilities could be enough to save all of the fae from the death hounds, if only she can figure out how to master them.

There were a lot of things I really enjoyed about this novel, Olivia was a fun character and I'm enjoying the start of a slow build romance between her and Ryker. I really love that there are so many different types of species in this world too, we have pixies, dragons, gargoyles and even the grim reaper and I know there are others I'm missing from that list. I do wish we'd had a little more detail on the world building though. What I really wanted to know was why the fae chose to come to earth in the first place, it was implied that they came here to get away from the death hounds but how did the death hounds suddenly become such a huge threat? I'd love to know more about where they came from and what they left behind. Also, how did they know about the talismans they would need in order to stay hidden? I think these questions and more will be answered as we continue the series though so I'm definitely looking forward to the next book.

The only real negative I have to mention is the amount of woman hating going on, I really disliked that so many women were portrayed as man-grabbing whores who were in competition with Olivia whether she wanted them to be or not. I've read everything Cecy Robson has published to date and I've not noticed that being an issue in previous books but the amount of slut shaming really bothered me in this book and did take a star off of my rating. It did improve in the second half of the book so hopefully we won't see more of it in any sequels.

I first discovered this author when I picked up the first book in her Weird Girls urban fantasy series, progressed to her contemporaries, and was excited to see she was taking us back to an urban fantasy world. This time her supernaturals are fae hiding among the humans when the hounds of death got a taste for living fae souls. Suspenseful, emotional, sensual, and exciting with that welcome inclusions of the author's own brand of humor made this a fab reading experience.

Unearthed begins with pixie, Olivia Finn, working in a prestigious Jersey City law firm with her best bud while keeping up with her curmudgeonly unorganized boss and avoiding the sex on legs cold lawyer Riker. She lost her family to the death hounds when she was young and now, like every other fae, she's trying to keep her head down and out of their notice especially since Olivia seems to be the only fae who made it through the door between worlds sans magic and her pixie wings.

All this changes when a night of terror at a fae night club shows her an unexpected magic that thwarts death itself, but not before there is terrible heart-breaking loss. Now, she is on the death hounds hit list and someone is helping them root out hidden fae. Olivia is the hope of the fae now and she must turn to the last person she would like to for help learning to use her new-found magic.

Unearthed was an obvious series introduction book, but I enjoyed the way the author revealed her world, her characters, and the situation. It rolled out steadily without being tedious as Olivia went about her new life and death daily life.

Olivia is easy to imagine as a pixie. She's colorful and fun-loving, strong sense of humor and not the most obvious heroine savior out there with her lack of fight ability and aggressiveness. But, she has a big heart and a need to avenge her family while protecting her fae people so she fearfully takes on the impossible it seems.

But, Olivia is not alone. There is is her trainer and the most confusing, deeply wounded person she knows and misunderstood all along. There is the old ancient fae hydra sharing her officework and her friendship with a power punch of magic. One of her bosses, Bill the gargoyle who is the defacto fae leader. And, a few dragons to pad out the underdog team.

The villains, the hounds of hell who are bloated on fae souls and magic are vicious, disgusting, and perfectly evil, especially the alpha dog. They had a shadowy ally and it was a nice suspense element to see that get revealed near the end, but in the meantime, they were easy to root against.

There is a halting romance, but it has its conflicts going along the side of the main plot of Olivia prepping and taking on a powerful enemy. I look forward to seeing where things go next for this pair and also the ongoing efforts with the team who are challenging death stalking the fae and eventually the oblivious humans all with a dose of humor that is laugh out loud at times.

All in all, this was a sensational start to a new series and I can't wait to keep going along. Urban Fantasy lovers should definitely give this new one a look-see.

*I received a free copy of Unearthed. This has in no way influenced my review which is honest and unbiased.*

Unearthed was an excellent and original read. There are fay. There are horrible death hounds. And there is Death (yeah, he's a real character!)

Olivia had to flee faerie when she was small, but the king of the death hounds had fled as well. Little by little, most of Olivia's family were taken by the hounds, and she was left alone. Living with her best friend Dahlia, and working as a paralegal in a successful law firm, she just tried to lay low and live life. Until that was no longer an option.

The pace of the action in Unearthed is fast, and there is a lot of action. There are also some tender moments, but I wouldn't exactly call this romance (at least not yet.)

If you're looking for an original, action-packed paranormal fantasy, Unearthed is definitely for you!

Unearthed is the first book I've read by Cecy Robson. I think it was a great introduction into her imagination and get a taste of the kind of worlds she can build.

The fae are on earth in hiding from their form of Death. They try to live normal lives and use a talisman to hide themselves. The world is nicely setup without overly explaining things. I enjoy that about a first book. The world is introduced as you need to know instead of an information dump.

I envisioned Olivia as a little bit flighty, but she soon proves herself to be more than competent in handling herself and others. When it comes to fighting Death, she is a little bit skittish, but she has a strong will and a determination to save her kind. It's like she figures if she is who was picked for this job, she better do all she can to complete it. She is serious about her mission. I really enjoyed that about her. When it came to her work or something that was expected of her, she was all in.

Unearthed is a fun start to the Death Seeker series. Olivia is left in kind of a rough place that I'm holding my breath about. Not a cliff hanger, just a situation that will need to be worked out. It has left me excited to see where she ends up next!

Excerpt

Excerpt from Unearthed

…in the Glen a nightclub where the Fae like to gather

Lights flash and magical mist pours across the dance floor, allowing privacy to those desperate for touch. Fae aren’t plentiful, and neither are establishments for us to gather. That’s what makes the Glen fun. It doesn’t just bring my kind together, it frees us. No glamour, no pretending. We discuss magic and the old realm, curse Death for destroying it and celebrate our survival.

With a shimmy and a shake, lavender and silver wings sprout from Dahlia’s back. She stretches, relishing the feel of simply being herself. She winks at me, her glimmering lavender eyes and lips radiant.

A drunk mountain troll stumbles between us. She releases my hand, allowing him through before clasping my hand and guiding us through the gyrating swarm of bodies. “Let’s have a drink, darling.”

I squeeze her hand. Fae are affectionate beings. In the human world, we cage our need to caress, embrace, and make love. It’s a way to keep our identities secret and another way to prevent Death from finding us.

Bill’s broken glamour was a result of a stolen kiss. It revealed his form to a human and worst of all damaged his talisman. Our talismans remain the only way to hide from those who hunt us. Without them, it’s a death warrant with our executioners often seconds from being collected.

A banshee sprints away from the bar and through the swarm of Fae. With all the grace of a swan, she leaps into the air and straddles the male who entered behind us. “David!” she screeches. “Sorry,” she adds when we groan and cover our ears.

“David” loses his tiny accountant persona, morphing into a giant cyclops with a long blond Mohawk. He laughs, catching the banshee when her legs break free of his widening waist.

She screeches. Again. The thought of that voice in the throes of passion makes me cringe. “David is going to need serious earplugs to get through the night,” I mutter.
Dahlia giggles, her laughter like wind chimes in the soft breeze. “Perhaps. But it will be worth it, darling,” she sings.

So apparently Death is a real person...like what the fuck. I really don't mean that in a negative way, but I guess it just makes the story... very interesting .

Anyway, If you enjoy stories about Fae and magic this is definitely for you! This was a quick-paced story with lots of action. The main character was sassy and it kept me entertained- I really wanted to know where Olivia ended up. The author did a great job of being descriptive but at the same time allowing the reader to be engaged and build and world scale. I liked the stark contrast between the concepts of life and death, even if the death part is a real fucking person.

Unearthed is the first installment in author Cecy Robson's Death Seeker series. 26-year old Olivia Finn is a pixie who wears a talisman to hide from Death. There are others like her as well, including some who work in her office. A Cù-sìth Death hound named Cathasach has been searching for Olivia and others like her. Four stars: A book featuring fae and Death clashing in an epic battle of good and evil.

Olivia Finn is a paralegal working in a prestigious law firm, but there is so much more to her than meets the eye. In reality, Olivia is a pixie who escaped from the land of Fae, a paradise overrun by the death hounds. Olivia and her family fled to Earth in hopes of escaping, but unfortunately, the hounds of death followed. The only thing that protects the vagabond fae from being eaten by the hounds are the small talismans they must wear at all times that keep them veiled. Things go horribly wrong when gremlins begin stealing the talismans, exposing the fae to the death hounds. Then the King of the Dead swoops in. Death and Olivia may be the only thing standing between the hounds overrunning the Earth. Can this unlikely duo save the world?
What I Liked:
Cecy Robson is known for her creative urban fantasy novels. This one is no different. I enjoyed the new spin on Death and the fae. There is plenty to like in this one. Big props for originality.
It’s always a tall task to deliver something different when it comes to the paranormal, but Ms. Robson did her research and brought us plenty of unique characters. There are the Death Hounds, pixies, gargoyles and a centuries old female Druid who masquerades as an old lady, not to mention there are also dragons and the King of the Dead. I loved reading about all this different entities. Plenty of new and creative characters in this one.
The story is action packed. It hardly lets up. It opens with a terrifying encounter with the death hounds and goes on from there. There really aren’t very many quiet moments in this one, so if you are a reader that likes heaps of action, this is one to read.
I enjoyed the humor. In between the action and the death, there are some funny scenes peppered in. I especially got a kick out Stevie, the young teenage dragon, and Jane, the wizened Druid.
I have to admit, I was shocked when the mastermind behind the scenes was revealed. I didn’t see that one coming. I always like a novel that has a good twist. Not only did I like that I was surprised by the unmasking of the bad guy, I also liked the way it all goes down.
The book ends in a nice spot, no cliffhangers or loads of unanswered questions. Always nice when the first book of a series doesn’t leave you on the edge.
And The Not So Much:
I was disappointed that the law office had a couple of slutty secretaries. I could have done without that cliche.
I didn’t like that there were times when Olivia was in the midst of a terrible life and death battle, and then she blacked out. When she woke, up the fight was over. I wish the fight scenes had played out in their entirety, instead of the fade to black and then recap.
I wish that there was a little more depth and detail when it came to the land of the Fae. I was confused about the death hounds and their origin. I also found it a little perplexing to have two forms of death: The King of Death and the hounds.
Unearthed is a promising new start to an action packed, paranormal urban fantasy series. I enjoyed the unique paranormal characters as it is always nice to get originality. I also liked the action and the plot twists. I am eager to read more of this series. It certainly started out with a bang.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own, and I was not compensated for this review.

Cecy Robson enraptures us with another amazing and creative series. I can't wait for more.

Death had come to the land of Fae. The Cù-Sìth no longer ferry the dead to their eternal rest. They have been killing indiscriminately and glutting themselves on the souls.   The fae hide from the Cù-Sìth in plain sight with the help of enchanted amulets and other objects which protect them from being seen by these hounds of death but if you were to lose your charm, the howls you hear will be your only warning as death hunts you.

Pixie Olivia Finn crossed from Fae to Earth when she was a child. Her father sacrificed himself for his family, but Olivia's mother and sisters were also hunted and consumed by the Cù-Sìth.  Like many of the Fae, Olivia is alone on Earth, and her a pixie without magic, or at least that's what she thought.  Olivia spends her day blending in with the humans while she goes about her job at the law office of MacGregor and Santonelli, or as best as one can when one is barely five feet with rainbow colored hair.  She also spends her day trying to ignore junior attorney, Ryker Scott. Ryker might be nice on the eyes, but Olivia still avoids him at all costs considering that his choice of clients even for a criminal defense firm leaves something to be desired.

Yet one fateful night when she loses her necklace and the hounds are baying for Olivia, she learns that she isn't the only one hiding.   Ryker Scott is more than just a lawyer.  He is the Ankou, the King of Death, the Fae's Grim Reaper. He also knows why Olivia is able to survive the Cù-Sìth. While Ryker is Death, this little pixie is Life.

Now that the Cù-Sìth are hunting Olivia, Ryker is determined to teach her how to draw out and command her abilities and use them to destroy the Cù-Sìth and free the souls they have trapped.   The fae are pinning all their hopes on Olivia to save them from their worse nightmares and free the souls of all their loved ones.  No pressure, right.

The time Olivia and Ryker spend together helps to focus Olivia's abilities but she will need more than a few weeks if she is going to go up against all the Cù-Sìth. And the old saying of opposites attract is certainly true since Ryker and Olivia are starting to forget the simple fact that Life and Death are antithetical.

Unearthed is just the beginning of the series but it is full of action and tension.  There are also so many unusual and fascinating characters. While I loved Olivia and Ryker and their dynamic, we also have Jane, the 800 year old druid; Bill, the gargoyle; Stevie, the pubescent dragon and even Olivia's human boss, Marco.  I enjoyed our interactions with each of these characters. I just love a story with a rich secondary cast of characters that help flesh out our hero and heroine.    There is also so much action going on that I had to re-read some scenes because I was reading so fast trying to see what happens.

I am so excited to see what happens next and what other characters we will be introduced to in the future.

Received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

The Fae escaped Death by fleeing to Earth’s realm unfortunately Death wasn’t far behind… Pixie Olivia Finn clings to talisman that keeps her veiled from Death and she believes that she is safe…until Death finds her and discovers that she’s immune to its grip. Now the Fae believe she is their savior and dark entities are compelled to destroy her, she can no longer hide from Death. To survive, she must seek it but can she trust the King of the Dead who has sworn to train and protect her.

This new series is utterly fascinating with lots an intriguing fae culture, surprising elements and Death in its many forms. The characters are strong, bold and some are a little on the quirky side, adding a bit of spice, flair and fun to the story. There is some seriously electrical chemistry between Olivia and Ryker, but this budding romance has several obstacles, which keeps the relationship in suspense throughout and also adds to the emotional turmoil of the story which in this case, there are lots which isn’t surprising when the characters are being stalked by death entities.

The story is steady to fast paced with lots of thrills and excitement around a complicated way of life as the fae try to stay hidden from Death, but with surprising twists and several deadly battles, Olivia, Ryker and her friends can’t be sure who trust either… readers either as the final battle of this part of the story stuns the characters and the readers. This story certainly catches readers’ interest but some of it may leave readers with some questions, like why is Olivia a pixie who suddenly has all these awesome powers, but of course, this is an urban fantasy, so obviously Olivia’s story is not over and readers will learn more as she does.

Book source ~ Tour. My review is voluntary and honest.

Olivia Finn is not human. She’s one of the Fae, a pixie living in Earth’s realm ever since Death destroyed her world. She works for a law firm where several other Fae work. They wear talismans to hide from humans and Death. But then Death comes to the firm and everything changes. Word gets out that she’s immune to Death and it’s up to her friends and the King of the Dead to keep her alive long enough to destroy the Fae’s worst enemy, Cathasach and the Cù-Sìth. Olivia is just a paralegal and a pixie, not the savior of her people. How is she going to survive the coming war?

If you like a compelling life or death story sprinkled with humor and hope that is a mix of ordinary human life entwined with the Fae in an extraordinary situation then this is the one for you. A fantastic world and great characters make this one of my top reads of 2019. I fell into the story and didn’t want to return to mundane life when I was done. Livvie is a strong, sassy, and funny character who carries the narrative well. Her sidekicks are interesting in their own right though I hope they get beefed up a bit in future editions. This is a world I could easily dive into again and again. Most excellent!

Unearthed is the first book in a new Urban Fantasy series by Cecy Robson.

This book started with a strong start and I was pulled into the story quickly. I really thought this would be at least a four stars. Somehow, it went down after a while. I'd say it was probably after we knew the main character was . I felt like this was made just to make the character special but it wasn't really explained except that

About the romance, I really enjoyed the beginning. I was really intrigued by Ryker. However, I found the ending predictable but also unbelievable. After all, But I enjoyed their banter, nonetheless.

I probably won't read the sequel but this was an enjoyable story even though it was a middle of the road kind of book for me.

I loved this so much, the characters are just amazing I love Olivia and Ryker so much, they have great chemistry and so much snark ! This isn’t a light read, there are a lot of dark themes and terror, graphic at times, I absolutely loved it, have I said that ! An addictive read, I have one criticism, I have to wait now for the next book, what a great start to what is going to be a fantastic series and a hell of a ride.

Unearthed by Cecy Robson was a fantastical ride start to finish. Olivia is pixie paralegal and Death is a lawyer (how fitting is that?). Olivia is cute & sassy and of course, Death is broody & sexy. This was such a unique spin on the Fae and the Grim Reaper. It kept me turning the pages well into the night. I absolutely love Ms. Robson’s Weird Girls and I can tell I am going to love this series as well!

I really like the quirky style of writing of this author it made the story so much better because of it. It was like a lighter more fun way of expressing the character.

Like they are in a scene were the character just finished being completely and utterly turned on...

"No, I'm not all right. I think I had an orgasm." lol even that part was funny🤣 (you just have to read it to get it 😂) and then like not even half a page later...

"I flick my wrist.
And take out Ryker's eye.
With a jump and a scream, I watch it plop on the floor."

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣 OMG I just can't🤣... but yeah never thought I would like a book so much just by the way it was written, the story line is also good by the way, but the way it was written it's such a fun way i had never seen before, like if you are actually inside this happy go lucky's character's brain and loving every second of it.

I've gone back and forth on what to rate this book until I almost lost my mind!

On the one hand, I thoroughly enjoyed it. It kept me hooked page after page and left me wanting more of Olivia and Ryker. I'm excited by the story and desperately looking forward to more! Which means pretty much five stars for me.
However, there was something about the way the story was executed that I found jarring and difficult. Time moved strangely, stuff would happen and I'd be confused and thinking I must've missed something when I know I didn't and that meant some things that happened just didn't make much sense... So, three stars.
In the end, I compromised and rated the book four stars for it wasn't perfect, I had my grumbles but all of that was overshadowed by how much fun I had reading it!

The world created by Robson was fascinating. Essentially, the creatures of the fae realm used to live in balance with 'death' - death being another race of various creatures - but for some unknown reason, the death creatures lost any kind of control and started indiscriminately killing the fae, destroying their world/dimension in the process.
Some fae created portals - at great cost and sacrifice - to get to our world, and they live amongst us in secret, hidden from the death creatures (who also slipped into our dimension and continue to hunt them) by magical amulets.
If they lose their amulet, one of the death creatures - in this book it was the Cu Sith - will find them and death is always hungry to devour souls...

The story is told from the pov of Olivia.
Olivia is a spunky and sweet paralegal who happens to be a pixie working at a law firm.
She's quirky and likeable but unremarkable until she does something quite remarkable and then the fun really begins!

The thing about this story is that it's mired in loss.
You feel the helplessness of the fae every time the bad guys strike.
Your heart aches for the characters and all they've been through and all they go through...
Olivia has lost everyone who ever meant anything to her but she somehow manages to radiate hope; Even when she's feeling pretty hopeless!
All the things she goes through to try and help her people when she never wanted or ever asked to be anyone's savior is astounding.
You're 100% behind her and desperately hoping for an end to the slaughter of the fae.

Then there is Ryker... Poor damaged misunderstood, Ryker.
Ryker has suffered a century of utter torment and despite having the power and opportunity to prey on those much weaker than him he stands and fights for them instead... Hoping for it all to end.
He lives, breathes and craves death.
He doesn't know how to live and he doesn't think there is anything to live for... Until a crazy rainbow needs protecting from all who would destroy her.

I'm not going to pretend I totally understand the dynamic between Ryker and Olivia but I love it anyway! I crave more of it. They're complete opposites and yet they're the same. Their relationship was freaking awesome and the fact that it is deliciously slow burn is even more awesome... These two are what will keep me reading book after book in this series.
The world created was cool, don't get me wrong, but the dynamic between Ryker and Olivia was addictive.

Unearthed is a good solid start to a new UF series and if you're a fan of the genre, I'd recommend!

That said, for those that like their UF low on romance I'd caution that while romance isn't front and centre in this book, the romantic potential is off the charts and pretty in your face despite being slow burn... Make of that as you will!

I can't wait to read more of this series!

I received an E-ARC from the publisher via Caffeinated PR in exchange for a review.

When it comes to office drama Unearthed fits the bill with secret magical beings and a fae pixie named Olivia, who becomes the target of the Cù-Sìth.

The Cù-Sìth are Celtic demon dogs who destroyed the homeland of the Fae, and after killing Olivia's entire family, the survivors were forced to hide on Earth.
Only now, " hiding from death is no longer an option"...

Olivia's special ability makes her immune to Death hence Cathasach, the packs Alpha is attracted to her and becomes her predator. Still, she'll need to grow some heavy balls and become stronger to keep her people safe if she is going to fight with death. So, Ryker Scott volunteers to teach her how to use her powers which will destroy every form of Death and become a hero.

Ryker is a handsome and sexy criminal defence lawyer but he is also the Grim Reaper aka Ankou. Therefore, his need to feast on souls generally consist of his clients. Genius. There is a slight hint of romance between Ryker and Olivia and moments of humour to lighten the mood. Even though I had to read the book twice, I appreciated it more the second time.

Light, fun, and gory... park your serious asses at the door, people. You need a sense of humor and a love of all that is fae to read this.

I've read my share of faerie folk books: from Merry Gentry to Wicked Lovely to Mercedes Thompson and everything in between. I've seen it all and I love it all. Ms. Robson's new twist is unique and so intriguing. I enjoyed Googling my heart out looking up all the Celtic mythology she borrowed from (I do that when I read; I'm a sponge for knowledge).

Let's see where this goes, yeah?

Always love Robson's paranormal adventures. The Seeker has a bit of a twist with the Fae try to stay under the radar in order to save themselves and humans. Olivia does not know what powers she has but knows that she does not like the hotshot lawyer Ryker. With the help of her office buddies this should be a magical ride. Great start to the series. I have been a fan of Cecy Robson for a long time and was thrilled to see that she was starting a new series. In a world where the Fae hide among the "normal" people, Olivia and Ryker must defeat evil to protect their way of life. The catch is that Olivia is life and Ryker is death. Can these two opposites work together? This was a great beginning to a series I look forward to following.

The book has some unique aspects, the plot moves forward at a decent pace & character growth does exist. However this wasn’t a page turner & it’s unlikely I’ll continue the series. 3 completely forgettable stars
