Graham H Miller has been writing since his teenage years when he had a scenario printed in a role playing magazine. Since then he’s written articles, guest posts, unpublished novels and a book on Pagan subjects. Born in Surrey, he lived in Kent for over 20 years before settling in South Wales. His brain is always at work, with more ideas than time. He is a house-husband proudly perpetuating the stereotype by writing books while his three boys are at school. He has two blogs that are erratically updated – one about life as father to three special boys and the other covering his thoughts on writing and the publishing process. He is fascinated by everything including prehistory, classic cars, anything Viking and learning Welsh. He is older than he thinks he is!
When the hotel housekeeper knocks on a guest's door, she gets no answer. Waiting a moment in case the guest is in the shower, she knocks again. No response .. no Do Not Disturb note... she opens the door and is greeted by something that will forever remain in her mind.
A man is sitting up in bed, covered in blood. He turns his head and opens his eyes looking directly at her. The his body falls across the bed .. but his head is still attached to the headboard.
DC Emma Angel returns to work after being cleared for wrong-doing during a drug raid. She escaped the hatchet, although most of her department have been fired, suspended, charged with crimes. Her boss at the time (DCI Rob Haines) suffered horrendous injuries and while he survivied, he has no memory of that night. He has yet to be questioned, but still remains on medical leave.
Working with a brand new team, Emma needs to go against her natural instincts without knowing who she can trust. Her new boss doesn't seem to think along the same lines as Emma, and a new DC is a woman who only has her future in mind, are people she's not even sure she can trust.
She has a major secret she's keeping from Haines, and yet she feels she can trust him .. at least more than the others. But how can he help while being on medical leave?
Well-written, this book is full of surprising twists and turns, leading to an unexpected conclusion. The characters are deftly drawn and Emma, especially, shines as a strong female detective. Although this is the 2nd in this series, it does well as a stand alone. However, I would recommend to read them in order.
Many thanks to the author for the digital copy of this crime fiction/mystery. Read and reviewed voluntarily. opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
THE WRONG VICTIMS (Angel & Haines Book 2) is a murder/mystery in a brand-new crime series by author Graham H. Miller. The new police procedural series has it all; well-paced plot with interesting multi-developed characters and a gutsy main protagonist. The novel is set in the town of Bradwick in the UK.
The Novels in the Series include: The Retirement Party (Book 1) The Wrong Victim (Book 2)
The Wrong Victim picks up from the fall out of the raid on the warehouse that had gone so wrong in The Retirement Party (book 1). While this book could be read as a standalone, as the author provides explanation to fill in the gaps, I would suggest reading the books in sequence to gain a better appreciation of the growth of the characters.
In The Retirement, DCI Rob Haines had been promoted to superintendent, a desk job and had agreed to take the heroine, DC Emma Angel, the new recruit under his wing in CID.
Bradwick had a drug problem as well as a serial killer targeting teenage girls. DCI Rob Haines had been doing everything possible to protect Bradwick, but it pushed his team to the edge.
The raid on the warehouse had gone so wrong. DC Emma Angel had been through a traumatic event and now returns to work after being investigated and cleared by the Professional Standards for any wrong doing. Her boss, DCI Rob Haines is off on medical leave after suffering tremendous injures and no memory of the night. It is the end of his career. Emma had saved his life.
Now Emma must work in a new team, not sure who she can trust; a new boss who had been asked to come back for six months to set up the new team on the right path, and a DS is a woman that is only interested in pursuing her career opportunities.
Tension mounting as both Emma and Haines hides secrets that they are afraid will be revealed.
A ruthless murderer is stalking the streets of seaside town Bradwick. With her department in chaos, Emma Angel has promised her boss that they can catch him, but he kills at random in a variety of different ways.
A chambermaid walked in to a motel room to find a male body that had been staged so that it appeared to be sitting up in bed, leaning against the back wall. The head was fixed to the wall. Setup to mimic a human puppet with wiring.
DC Emma Angel needs to catch a killer who leaves no clues.
This new fast-paced well written crime series will be well received by a wide audience. The characters are well developed and Emma is a strong female detective. Lots of twists and turns. Sit back and enjoy!
Many thanks to the author, and the The Book Club Reviewer Request Group (FB) for my digital copy.
The Wrong Victims is the second in the Angel & Haines series which is set in Wootenshire.
DC Emma Angel is back at work after a drug raid with a completely new CID team. Her old Boss DCI Rob Haines is having to live with the fact his career is over after an injury during the raid. But Emma recruits him to help with the case. And Haines is hoping this will support him becoming a policeman again.
The new CID team are dealing with a murderer who is ferocious, formidable, gruesome who is committing some egregious, grotesque and dark homicides which are somehow linked to an old cold missing person case.
Although this is a series, this is the first book I have read. But it can definitely be read as standalone as Graham provides a good backstory in this. But I would still start with Book 1.
The plot is bloody fantastic. The murderer is one sick puppy who honestly commits the most abhorrent, gut-churning and monstrous murders. This book is grisly and spine-chilling with so many twists and turns. It is a real page-turner which I read in two sittings.
Characters
DC Emma Angel is a fierce, strong-willed female character. Who prefers working by herself but in this book has to learn to work and trust her new CID colleagues. I absolutely fell in love with Emma as a character.
Writing
Graham H Miller is a wonderful writer who has created interesting, dark and gruesome crimes with police corruption and wonderfully created characters. His writing style is awesome. He has created some defined characters which are flawed and dishonest. He has a distinctive writing voice.
Pace
The opening scene is distinguished and extraordinary and one which you will not bypass in a hurry. This is a fast-moving paced book with all the right elements with an incredible twist.
Cover
A fitting book cover for a bloody awesome book!
Overall thoughts

I absolutely loved the first book in this police procedural series, The Retirement Party, and have been eagerly awaiting the release of Book 2. It did not disappoint!
The back story picks up the threads from the fall out from the raid in Book 1. Book 2 could be read as a standalone as the back story is explained, but I think a lot of nuance would be lost of the personal and ethical conflicts that led to how Angel and Haines came to be in the positions and headspaces that they are. The team has fallen apart due to legal consequences and medical issues. Haines is trying to recover from a traumatic brain injury with memory gaps while Angel is now part of a new team, none of who seem to be team players, and they both have differing reasons to fear repercussions from the raid.
The first major case for the new team is a grisly murder, swiftly followed by two more, and the new team struggle to find a commonality between the murders while also struggling to work together. I don't want to give away spoilers but I loved how everyone evolved throughout the book. The characterisations are great and unforced, as is the struggle of a new team trying to mesh together, and the police methodology feels very authentic.
The pacing of the story is realistic. Nothing happens quickly but it is never boring. The strained interpersonal relationships between all the characters has been done perfectly. You can feel the tension between Angel and Haines as each worries about secrets emerging, and within the team as they try to work out who they can trust and how far.
The wrong victims by Graham H Miller. DC Emma Angel must catch a killer who leaves no clues while DCI Rob Haines comes to terms with the end of his career. A ruthless murderer is stalking the streets of seaside town Bradwick. With her department in chaos, Emma Angel has promised her boss that they can catch him, but he kills at random in a variety of different ways. The only common factors are that he displays the bodies in grotesque set pieces and a link to a fifteen year old missing child case. Very good read. Emma is still my favourite character. I liked Suse. I hope there is more to come. 4*.
The Wrong Victims has one of the most unforgettable opening scenes you will find in a book. After that, it grabs you and takes you on a fast paced journey of cat and mouse as a killer with a flair for the gruesome terrorises the seaside town of Bradwick.
Once again we meet DC Emma Angel who we first met in The Retirement Party. It helps to have read that first but this also reads well as a stand alone. Angel is likeable, brave, loyal and like all the best protagonists, doesn't always play by the rulebook, but gets results.
It's down to Emma's loyalty to her old boss, Rob Haines, that the case finally gets cracked, but not before a breathtakingly tense finale where you feel anything could happen at any second, and with a killer as imaginative as this, you have no idea what he could be capable of.
The only problem I have with Graham H Miller's books is that I read them way too fast. It's impossible not to! Now I have to wait for the next one. If this was on TV, EVERYBODY would be talking about it (but it would have to be on after the watershed if they did the murder scenes justice!).
Miller 's books just keep getting better and he is truly a talent to watch.
DC Emma Angel returns in the 2nd Angel and Haines story. From the outset, you are gripped into the storyline. Emma doesn't always play by the rules but the one thing that she always gets and that is answers but will she be able to trust people to get them? I honestly didn't know what the outcome would be. I was that engrossed, I read it in one sitting! You are sent on a crazy journey which resulted in so many possible endings but I still wouldn't have guessed what it was. You get to know the characters better in this book so I would suggest reading The Retirement first. I enjoyed this book alot. From start to finish, you are left wanting more and I'm looking forward to the next book to see what's in store for DC Angel. If there was ever a chance for a TV series, I think these books could be it! Definitely a great read. You won't be disappointed.
I really enjoyed the first one of this series and I also really enjoyed this one however what lost it a star for me was the fact that it was both quite repetitive in the scene setting (why Angel and Haines are in the situation that they are) but also didn't really answer questions new readers would have had for several chapters. That being said, once introductions were finally over with, they didn't detract from the actual story. The new book moved relationships on within the team well and has started to flesh out the main characters nicely. The actual solving of the crime was handled well and with a good degree of suspense and believability. Recommended but start with book one of the series so you can skim over the awkward scene setting sections of this book.
Overall 4.5* If you have not read this author before ( which I hadn’t) and read the opening chapters, you may wonder what you are letting yourself in for! Fear not for this sets the scene for a great page turning story which only goes from strength to strength. The town of Bradwick is being besieged by what appears to be random murders and its police department is in disarray. DC Emma Angel is unsure where to turn next and who to trust. What I liked about the story is that you as the reader were never quite sure where it would head next and the ending is one that I certainly didn’t work out! I will now definitely go back and read book 1 of this series. I read this book as an ARC for my bookclub.
I’m glad I was able to read book two of the Angel and Haines series. This book was definitely intriguing and a page turner. I didn’t see the plot twist coming which was definitely surprising. Emma kept her head about herself with her own issues between her former boss, her new boss, and her new coworkers all while solving the murders with out getting pushed about by Kev Slater. I would definitely recommend this book.
DC Emma Angel has come back to work after a drug raid went badly wrong to find she is working with a whole new team.DCI Rob Haines was her boss but was severly injured in that raid and is medically unfit for work. A series of orchestrated murders occur with the only link being a poster of a missing boy from 15 years previous. Emma works behind the scenes with Rob to unravel the past. Fast paced, twists, look forward to reading more. This is book 2 but can be read on its own.
Book two in the angel series and well worth the wait. Likeable and realistic characters, compelling story line, confident and engaging reading. I always look forward to Graham’s books. They always have something to keep you gripped and wanting more. I hope this isn’t the last in this series and can’t wait for more 😊
This is the second book in the series but the first book I read. I will definitely be going back to read book 1 and then reread book 2 because it seems that book 1 really sets up books 2 in how the relationships all play out with the main characters. The plot itself was intriguing and built up with plenty of suspense and twists.
I received a copy of this book from TBC Reviewers request- Thank you This is the second book in the series and whilst it could be read as a standalone I would recommend reading the series in order for the best ‘feeling’. A gripping crime procedural that had the added bonus of a great thriller to it. A fantastic read I’ll be looking for the next book
Gruesome and complicated. This police procedural is the second Angel and Haines novel. There is lots of evidence and yet the killer is managing to elude detection. Corruption and cover-ups don't make things any easier.
