Rate this book

An essential introduction to a solemn and grand religion.
Although I find the author's explanation of Zen to be vague and elusive, I comprehend that it is the nature of Zen that cannot be fully explicated.
The main gist of Zen is enlightenment, While rationality has its advantage, we should be mindful of its ptitfalls and abandon it when brings only anxiety and troubles.
Zen while opposes rationality, it is not nihilism. It aims at asserting the world by using absolute statements that surpass or fuse dichotomous statements. It's like hanging on the tree by biting its trunk: you'll fall if you open your mouth to answer, you'll miss his question if you stay silent.

The many wise anecdotes 公案 is one of the two main ways Chan buddhists achieve enlightenment (the other way is 禪那 meditation which the author being a 臨濟宗 not preferred, he praises 參禪)。 Birds don't meditate anyway. And Zen Buddhism focuses on experiential transformation but not metaphysical abstract philosophizing). Together with the strict well-established 禪堂 system, Zen buddhism is not a mysticism as it follows a systematic approach to leading their pupils in achieving enlightenment themselves.

Of course, the author acknowledges that the anecdotes are not Zen. However, to achieve enlightenment solely through meditation is very hard. Thus, having some guidance is better than nothing, even though we should beware of the pitfalls of 假言施設。

Sometimes different masters give different answers to the anecdotes but what's important is their mental state 心境 when they reply. Having achieved initial enlightenment, the masters are required to exile in the woods or the city They not only need to understand Zen but to live in Zen in every living moment. That's the hard part. Finally, it would be To act benevolently without calculation for reciprocity is 無功用行=擔雪填井。

There's no a single thing as Zen. But Zen can be found in everything. A sound, a difficult sentence, a flower, a song, a tea, doing your chores contain the home you long for. Who says that an earthquake is a more important event that a leave falling?

Perhaps I could read 碧巖錄 to learn more about Zen Buddhism.
I love the wisdom Zen Buddhism entails in all its whimsical stories (cutting the boy's finger,
