The world has ended. Unexplainable natural disasters are the downfall to civilization as we know it. Medical care is so scarce that it has become illegal for anyone to use.

Jade, an asthmatic debtor, spends her life scavenging in a dystopian while hiding out from the DC officers—an aggressive task force who hunts down medical debtors. She manages to stay off their radar until she kills one of them while trying to save a young girl, who resembles Jade’s estranged sister.

Now she’s the most wanted person in the country.

Teaming up with other debtors and a local rebel group, Jade no longer wishes to survive. Her mission is to fight and overthrow the people who implemented the new medical law.

Will she be able to succeed?

Surviving Red was such a great read! I found myself so connected and attached to the main characters which typically NEVER happens when I read books. I even found myself having a crush on one. If you’ve read it, you know which character I’m referring to. lol!

I’m a night owl, and mostly read the book at night. One time I was so engulfed in my reading that I looked up and it was 5am!! Often I would pick a chapter to stop reading for the night, only to be pulled back in with a cliffhanger… I was hardly ever able to stop at my planned chapter.

Overall, I haven’t enjoyed reading a book this much in quite some time. I’m looking forward to picking up the other books in the series. Razor & Helena are next on the list followed by Fighting Red. I cannot wait!

In Surviving Red, Jana´ paints a vividly dark picture of a dystopia where the ability to afford or not afford health care decides your worth and class of living. Jana´ creates a world to get lost in, and has you questioning exactly what humanity is as you read. Strong female characters, lots of action, and a morally complex plot. This book reads pretty quickly, and I did not want to put it down. I wanted to be able to pick up the next volume immediately upon finishing this book; I will be eagerly awaiting a sequel!

Lovers of action and young adult novels will find themselves totally enthralled with Surviving Red. Jana's attention to detail is impressive and captivating as she weaves a tale of adventure, violence, and hope in dystopian Michigan. Jade, the main character, is a tough and intelligent young woman that risks it all to protect the people she cares about. Despite her obstacles, her resilience will have the reader rooting for her the entire novel.

One of my favorites of 2024!

Surviving Red gives off Red Rising/Hunger Games vibes while also being a treatise of sorts about the US healthcare system. In what seems to be a not too distant dystopian future, medical treatment has become so unattainable for everyday people that bands of "Debtors" join together to form rebel communities to scavenge for medical supplies, and fight the Debt Collectors task force that hunts them down. Jade is an asthmatic who has lost not only her family, but her boyfriend's as well because of the expense of her illness. She survives as a lone scavenger, until the day the actions of the DC task force propel her to take action. As a result, she becomes somewhat of a folk hero and joins up with a group of rebels. Jade will love and lose and reunite with people from her past and present, as the Debtors take a stand.

This book gave me everything: dystopian fiction, action, even a little romance. It's kind of YA but not quite with some of the subject matter. But the whole premise of healthcare being governed based on the haves and the have not such a far cry from how it is administered now, but the twist of debt collectors hunting folks down, to the point of violence? Now that seems like a prescient warning. I'm fully vested in this series, and can't wait to complete the next installment!
