Soulship #2

Soul Shelter

Rate this book
She'll save every star in the night sky.
But only if he can keep her alive.
Jasper Cloud has reunited his friend with the Soulship, a being that is both a mighty-though damaged-living starship and a brave young woman. The Soulship has scattered her avatars, including Jasper's childhood friend, across several worlds in a desperate bid for survival. If she can just find time to repair herself, she'll return to her former glory, strong enough to overthrow the oppressors of Earth and the worlds beyond it, and setting the galaxy free once more.
But her damage is severe, and her monstrous hunters are countless. Some even lurk in the recesses of the ship itself, hunting for the young woman that serves as the Soulship's core.
Right now, Jasper is her only line of defense. He must use his wits and his newly gained power to refine both himself and the living ship all while protecting her until they can both turn the tables on the galaxy's predators.
The night sky depends on him.
But more importantly, so does she.

So far this is an interesting and fairly original cultivation story with a romance that is so sweet, so subtle, and such a slow burn that it can barely be called a romance at all. It would be perfect for younger people whose parents worry about exposing them to graphic relationship descriptions and topics, as there are none here. There is a lot of awkwardness about attraction, though, and that could create empathy for a younger reader.

I thought I was reading a self contained trilogy but here at the end of book 2 and the beginning of book 3 I do not believe that the characters can progress entirely in the remaining 3rd book unless something catastrophic happens. So, without having checked further yet, I suspect this series will continue past 3.

If I have a negative at all it's that these books could use a second run through by a copy editor. It's nothing all encompassing, nothing that yanks you out of the story by the scruff of your neck. There are a lot of places where it seems perhaps a sentence originally intended to be phrased one way, but another way was chosen but the clean up of the old way didn't quite happen. They read a bit like they were published half way through the editing process. Just a bit, though, and nothing that gets in the way of the story. At least not for me.

Good story a little short

Definitely like where the story is going. Neat world, cultivation style magic etc with some nice twists on the concepts used by the MC. Definitely recommend just wish the books were longer.

Even better than the first book

I’m glad I started this series and continued on to this book. It’s a clever book of hope. It introduces characters I’m excited to read more of in the series.

4 Subject Is Advised To Prepare For Intense Transition Stars

Soul Shelter is the second book in the Soulship series by Nathan Thompson.

I always have the worst expectations for men writing women characters. Simply fueled by bad circumstances and a deep innate dislike for all things patriarchal. However, I was wonderfully surprised to find that the incessant bickering between Nova and Vessa this edition had actual purpose in character development and further understanding the progression Vessa had but to accomplish before her strenuous future fate could be wrested from her. An emotionally fueled one, at that. The scene depicting the explanation for this seemingly trivial aspect of the story highlights one of my, perhaps, favorite quotes of all time.

The genius behind instituting Mother/Senior/Elder Mara at this point in the development of the story. When this cast of necessary, and widely demanded, characters desperately need further guidance and shoring up. Along with her additional cuteness influx with the little ones at the end there.

I truly can't wait for some amazing and mind expanding fight scenes in our future. To face the disgustingly creepy puppet master lurking on her darkened vessel. To truly discover the shadows that may be the true culprit behind the destruction of the Soulship's of the past. And yet, how they connect to that of the other great and horrendous antagonist to the night sky, the Glorious Star Charter.

Also, science and magic in their combined slendor, will always be my favorite reading journey.

I feel this author are missing some key points of what makes a good story and a good book. I loved the mechanics of the universe, but that's it.
Sorry for the rant bellow, but I feel the author took a potentially good story and threw it in the trash.
The social interactions are tedious, and the story is written so that the mc is unbelievable lucky, gets a lucky break, everything works out for him, and everyone is oh so grateful and he is so happy to help. You need an ancient advisor? Unimaginable treasure? Maybe some dragons to ride? Here have two! The teenage love drama could have been taken from a worse version of the Twilight series.

Jaser and Nova have escaped the cage dragon and the cruel government on Earth. Unfortunately, the ship they are on is not in great shape. They will need to repair the ship and retake each area from the creatures that have been trying to consume it for power.

I have really been enjoying this mix of sci fi and cultivation. The cast grows slightly with Elder Mara in this book. She makes a welcome addition and provides fantastic insight. I was concerned about one of the twists at the end, but Nathan Thompson pulls it off! This series is definitely worth checking out!

Good, but …

The storyline has become a veritable treatise on metaphysical game rules and for those well versed in the craft this should be an interesting journey. Others might find it confusing to follow, though they hopefully will be able to figure it out. The writing is well done and that helps. This installment ends well, though the story is not yet resolved, there is only minimal push for the next installment.

As good as Challenger's series

This series has developed well and although some of the concepts and goals are simliar to his other series there is still quite a lot to look forward to.
The characters flow well and the addition of another master type is great and has kept me engrossed and looking forward to book 3

Amazing as always.

As I said in my other reviews regarding Nathan Thompson‘s books, absolutely incredible.

If you are reading this in order to determine whether or not this series is worth starting. Know that I have read all six of the current soul ship books at least five times.

These are some of my favorite books ever. And I’ve read 200 a year since 2016.

Excellent

Not good at reviews. But Nathan is a very good writer.
I like Jason’s new grandmother she is a great example of what we should all try to become in a grandparent. Read the CC series and this series you will want more of both.

Great Series

I really like this series so far. Sometimes it's still a little hard to understand the whole concept, but I definitely will get the next book in this series. Would highly recommend!

A good continuation to the story, the levels has me confused, specially after his encounter with the shadows in the ship, I wonder why they ran away from his in such a weak state, or why the level he need to reach to face them is so low.

A bit more going on but,

Still nothing all that new. This is not bad, just more of the same. I think the limited number of characters is not helping with the stale feeling.

Great second book

Getting to the end, we run into an idiot. I wonder if we’ll see him in each book? Grabbing the next one.

Great Continuation, Bumpy Start

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. But, at least for me, the beginning quarter felt off. Vessa’s tone of voice shifts into goofiness, where before it was serious, tired, and melodramatic. The change felt awkward and didn’t quite fit. Jasper didn’t respond to any of it, which amplified the oddness. After the start, though, the silly tone is dropped and things go back to preestablished norms.

Minor spoilers: I am on board with focusing on taking back the ship for a few books (if not more). To me, it felt like a Dungeon Core novel with a unique twist: the dungeon is already filled with monsters and must be reclaimed. Perhaps the main characters can use the safe sections of the ship to construct traps to capture more territory. Could be a fun diversion until the crew begins to take back the galaxy.

Great continuation

Soul Ship 2 builds well upon the story began in the first one. Fans of Nathan's work will definitely find more to love here. You will find, however, a lot of parallels between this series and Challengers Call, Nathan's other series. While some may find that a bit of a turn off, I actually like the idea of similarities between series with extremely different mechanics within their world's - in this case litrpg and cultivation. Jasper also has enough personality difference from Wes that it gives the story a different feel. If you liked book 1 enough to get all of the way through, you'll definitely enjoy book 2 as well.

Weirdly interesting, best of all: it just works

Who would have thought that an emo hero with deep psychological issues, repressed anger, and obsessive behavior would make a good companion and champion, in space, for a ship-girl victim of abuse, isolation and malnourishment? Add to that the ship-girl has a severe split personality disorder forced by her parents at times immemorial that resulted in the creation of actual persons instead of personalities and you complete the list of everything that it is right with this book.

Oh and there is a talking mouse that channels a very convincing pikachu.

Solid showing

Another solid novel from a solid author. The interesting concept continues to be interesting and the story continues to be well written. My only real complaints are that I caught a few incorrect words over the course of the book(I remember 4), and that the BBEG villains seem kinda samey to the BBEG villain in his other story, but we’ve also only seen them twice so far so not really all that surprising. All told it was good and I’d read it again.

Excellent!

I rarely write reviews. This is very deserving. The characters are real. They are having crazy gains. They are, also, broken, and have very real struggles to achieve their growth. The relationships show the growth, and deepening that happens over time. This is what I look for as a reader.

Nathan: Please, do not feel pressured to put out books that are not up to your standards. We will be here ready to snap up the next installment. Whenever it comes out.

Great story!

This book was just as good as the first and I very much enjoyed reading it. I find the soulship’s split of physical bodies interesting. After all, it’s okay to argue with yourself at times, so long as you aren’t beating yourself up. :)

Jas’ advancement path is one I appreciate, as he is taking the long hard road, which will hopefully result in greater dividends for him.

Fantastic story!

I love that Nathan avoids all of the obvious tropes found in Litrpg and creates a world and a system that is entirely unique. His characters actually grow and change. And the underlying messages from his books are incredibly deep and powerful. A must read series!

A great continuation and a growing of power for our mc

The story continues where it left off with the gathering of materials but this one is a lot more about the growth of our mc now that he isn't worried about saving his friend but not getting left behind. A new companion is found and new powers used. It is a great book can't wait for the next one.

Interesting take on cultivation Story

I will say this book is interesting. It takes 3 different ideas, mana... essence... Qi... and then has a character cultivate with each.

It’s a non typical cultivation story set mostly in a space ship / science fiction setting, but with combat between people rather than starships.

It’s a good story. Looking forward to book 3.

Any fan of Will Wight has likely been disappointed by many other series as they try to recapture the feeling of reading the Cradle series for the first time. Well, I can honestly say that Nathan Thompson's Soulship books will get you as close as you're likely to come to accomplishing that goal. They are simply fantastic and so much fun. Do yourself a favor and pick them up ASAP.
