Every women’s Bible study I’ve ever known of or been apart of has lacked theological or biblical depth for the sake of being more relevant and personal. Jackie hill Perry does not make sacrifices. What makes this Bible study incredible is that it is an intense deep dive into a rarely studied book of the Bible with great theological depth and in the process challenges participants to examine their own hearts and experiences and those around them. I highly recommend it to any woman wanting to participate in a rich biblical study.

I will say if done in larger groups or with people who may be less familiar with the Bible it might need extra teaching or simplified questions, as Jackie asks readers to flip all over their Bible for answers and expects a Bible knowledge that some might not have. The study also requires a lot of time which I could see being difficult for busier ladies so it could definitely be stretched out longer than the recommended 7 weeks as well.

Incredible teaching. I'm so over the feel good, all about you women's Bible "teachers". JHP doesn't play around with emotion and using HER words in excess. This isn't washing your face and hiding behind a clever, topical antidote to teach. She makes YOU dig in scripture, seeking truth after truth. This was hard. And good. And worth the effort. In this world, we must contend for the faith harder than ever before. Jude's letter is a brilliant admonition on HOW we do that and we never stop fighting for Biblical truth to be taught from the pulpit and in our homes.

So, this was a bible study my women's bible study group did last year and 2020 kind of swallowed me up halfway through, so I had to go back and finish it on my own. That said, I only saw the first half of the video content.

As for the video content I did see, I thought Perry was a very clear teacher. I really enjoyed what she had to say. She was succinct, straight to the point, and yet powerful. The book itself was well laid out and I really enjoyed the way that Perry dissected the letter of Jude. I learned a lot about the letter's historical context and the original intent that made it so much easier to understand than before when I've read through it on my own. I came away from the study with a deeper understanding of what James was trying to convey to his audience and how to apply that to my life in today's society and culture. And I feel like I've grown more confident, not only in my understanding of the letter, but even of its place in the greater work of the Bible as a whole, too. And it was definitely nice to have enough space to write the answers to the questions!

I will admit that by the end of the study, I felt like it was being stretched out. I mean a seven week study on the tiny letter of Jude is a lot! It was impactful, but particularly toward the end, I felt like there was less to unpack than the five page daily studies were unpacking. But, then again, it could also have partially been the fact that I had been in the study for longer than the seven weeks.

I definitely enjoyed this one, and I would recommend it for sure!

This study was SUCH a blessing, challenge, and encouragement to me. This is my first time to deeply study the book of Jude (whoa did it feel timely!) and I really appreciate Jackie Hill Perry’s commitment to rightly handling Scripture. She is a gifted teacher and I love learning from her. I will say that while each week technically had 4 days of homework, for my current season of life, I spent more like 6 or 7 days completing the weekly homework. This isn’t necessarily a criticism (every minute was well-spent time!), but I think it helps to be well aware of what sort of time commitment you’re making when you pick a study. The videos were certainly a vital part of this study and studying it in a small group enriched my experience. I loved the time I spent in Jude over the last 7+ weeks and am thankful for this guide to help me make the most of it.

Get this study. You won't regret it. It's full of cross references and biblical insight that transformed the book of Jude (in my own head) from confusing and even seemingly unintelligible to a beautiful testament to God's character and how he relates to His people. Simply stunning.

“The preservation of our own comforts and the privileges afforded to preaching a half gospel can make it tempting to lay aside what we know to be true because there’s a lot to lose for preaching the whole gospel...”

I found out about this book after reading Jackie Hill Perry’s book Holier than Thou as it was advertised in the back of the book. It caught my eye because I know how short Jude is in the Bible and I was wondering how you could do an entire Bible study over one chapter!

This was an awesome study! You definitely get to know the chapter very well and I learned so much. Even though you’re drilling down verse by verse in Jude, it’s great that JHP includes so much other Scripture to look up that helps you understand what Jude is talking about and makes connections.

I did this as a study with a few other women. There are four days of homework each week. I wouldn’t say they are short days, but it’s definitely do-able. The number of pages per day is not always indicative of how long it will take you because there are sections of commentary that you just read; it’s not necessarily a lot of questions to answer.

Her style of Bible study is similar to Jen Wilkin’s methods where there are definitions to look up, underlining and circling, cross-referencing, and some thoughtful questions to answer.

The book comes with an access code to LifeWay’s video player so everyone who has a book has the ability to watch the week’s corresponding video if they can’t make it to group.

What was different about this study than other ones I’ve done is that the video you watch for the week goes with the homework you WILL be doing instead of what you just finished. I didn’t like that as much.

I would have rather had the video portion be explaining and going over what you just got done studying. When you get JHP’s part before you read you’re not sure what kind of questions you’re going to have and if she addresses them. Then it’s hard to remember during the week if the video said anything about it.

With Jen Wilkin’s studies, you might have some hard questions you’re unsure about, but then you come together and watch the video and she usually answers or addresses the things you were wondering about. That seems to work better for me.

This study felt timely for me because one of the main themes is (as the subtitle states) contending for the faith.

Jude calls out the false teachers who are perverting God’s grace to justify their sinful desires, pursuing unnatural desire, relying on their own knowledge and rejecting authority instead of submitting themselves under the authority and design God established. (v5-8)

With very descriptive and poetic language (v12-13) Jude points out that these false teachers are selfish, aimless, dangerous, and do not promote life.

Essentially they are diluting, distorting, and denying the truth and the gospel message. Jude is calling the church to contend for the one faith we all share in Christ. (Galatians 1:6-9, 23; Acts 6 :7)

This call to contend is just as relevant today as it was then. I’ve recognized more and more messages within Christianity that are teaching a different gospel, one that presumes upon God’s grace to justify what they feel is right, one that rejects the authority of Scripture but elevates other sources or methods of reasoning above God’s Word.

And these false teachers are really hard to detect when we are not discerning. They are not the ones rejecting Christianity altogether. Those aren’t the false teachers Jude and other writers in Scripture are warning about. It’s the ones that claim the Christian label but lead people down a path of half-truths which are lies.

Doing this study bolstered me and encouraged me to contend for the truth. That we are right to push back on false gospels. Jude calls us to have mercy on those who doubt, but to save others by “snatching them out of the fire” (v23)— a call of urgency.

JHP does a good job of walking us through how to contend for the faith in love and mercy and patience, that how we contend matters. But the word ‘contend’ that Jude uses has connotations of a fight; the Greek word used for it is the same one we get the word ‘agonize’ from. Contending is struggling and persevering. Enduring rejection or mocking.

If you are contending for the gospel, even with grace, humility, gentleness, and respect, you will still probably encounter antagonism. That doesn’t mean you are doing a wrong thing.

Part of what I feel my call is as a book reviewer is to contend for the faith as I process books that I read and to point out to other readers where there is questionable theology. This study in Jude encouraged me to continue to do that and reminded me how important mercy, peace, and love are within that.

Jackie Hill Perry has, herself, been a great contender of the faith and a promoter of God’s authority and his good design, his goodness in character. Her book Gay Girl, Good God is just one example of how she has done this.

I appreciate her teaching style because she is very blunt, but you can tell it comes from a place of love and camaraderie, not of superiority.

Another major theme of this study is in the doxology of the passage where Jude says “to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great job” (v24).

It was such an encouragement to really let it sink in that when we are adopted into God’s family, we are sealed for heaven. He keeps us until the end. We don’t have to do enough good. We abide in Christ and he keeps us abiding. He is the reason we will experience the full glory of God’s presence.

What a relief and a mercy that Christ keeps us.

Recommendation

Even though I wish the video situation was reversed, I definitely still recommend this study. It gets you in the Word, it challenges you, and it encourages you.

Now, just as much as when Jude wrote his letter, we are called to contend for the faith. To unify under our common salvation and dispel any idolatry or false beliefs about who God is and what his truth is.

This study will encourage you of that importance and assure you that you are not alone in doing so.

I really loved this devotional. It is VERY thought provoking however this is not a quick devo. Jackie uses a lot of Bible passages to support (there is alot of going back and forth to find passages). She also would attempt at leading me places that sometimes I wouldn’t understand. Her questions take a lot of reflection. To sum it up this is a deep devotional that will take you 30-45 minutes to read each session. Very good!

This book forces you wrestle with difficult concepts in the Bible. She allows you to see the connection between the old & New Testament. It is a lot of work, but worth it in the end. It’s super challenging and the content is relevant to our culture. Applicable to anyone. I think men and women should do this study.

Probably the easiest five stars to give to - this is an incredible study! Jude’s an easy letter to skip over or skim because it’s tiny and seems to hide right before Revelation, but I’m super thankful for Jackie Hill Perry’s wisdom and courage to take a deep dive in this letter, take us on a journey to uncover a ton of truth about God, ungodly teachers/prophets and His judgement and wrath. Honestly not sure why this study is marketed primarily for women because there’s nothing in here that’s gender specific - I think all women and men who are serious about following Jesus should study this letter. There’s a lot to take away from this letter that pertains to loving Jesus in our culture right now. Thank you again Jackie Hill Perry.

I enjoyed this study, though each day is so much that it takes around an hour to do. I also didn’t understand what the author was looking for in a lot of the questions. Doing this with a group for accountability and sharing answers really helped.

I had a great time with this study! It’s veeery in-depth (I started this thinking.. “Jude is only one page - how is this book so long?”, but JHP doesn’t hold back with cross references, linguistics, etc). She facilitated the study very well by allowing me to think for myself, and I didn’t think the questions were too guided or anything. It’s the perfect thing to do during summer break, when you have more free time. I think this would have stressed me out, and I wouldn’t have been able to devote so much time to it, if I had attempted this during the school year.

I was expecting to walk away from this only knowing more about the book of Jude itself, but I learned so much about the whole Bible (Exodus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Psalms, Joel, Malachi, 1 & 2 Timothy, 1 & 2 Peter, etc). I got a lot of practice flipping around! It makes me so excited to continue studying the Old Testament, since I’ve been focusing more on the New Testament lately.

The last day, she had us write our own doxologies to mimic the doxologies of many NT epistles, such as Jude 24-25.

Mine is “to Him who is merciful, kind, faithful, just, beautiful, wrathful, jealous, and loving all at once, who desired us and hated sin so much that He chose to become it, and who is the holy and rightful Lord over the lives of those who revere Him — to Him be honor and glory and praise and power over all nations and peoples, and over all creation, forever and ever. Amen.”

Exercises like this made the study less monotonous, and helped me to actually put what I’d learned into practice. Definitely meditating a lot on God’s holiness, beauty, and complexity in response!

I’m not really one for prewritten devos, but this is a study. It has you flipping through your Bible to make better sense of the context of Jude. It was better than what I was expecting.

I only listened to a couple of the videos, I don’t think they’re entirely necessary when you’re studying the book yourself.

Jude is a book of encouragement for believers yet revealing the hard truth that false teachers are in the midst and so we are compelled to contend for the faith, the true gospel. Knowing that it is by Christ that we are already kept in His love from the beginning and to the end.

To study the word not to grow in knowledge for myself, but to see that God has more to say through it and teach than I could ever know.

Wonderful. Everybody who reads the Bible should complete this study - not just women. I have gained so much insight not only into the book of Jude, but the character of God, the purpose of His judgement, and the entire Bible. Jackie does a fabulous job of guiding the reader through book in a way that allows the reader to actually study and reach conclusions on their own, but in a way that does not allow for misinterpretation of the truth. I am excited to use the tools from this study in my own Bible reading. 10/10

The homework was more than I thought but this Bible study could not be more relevant to help us see false teachers in an internet and connected world. It helps you see not the in-your-face false teacher, but the ones that truly sneak in and subtly lead your theology and doctrine towards a totally new gospel that doesn’t lead to life. Jackie was honest and the videos really short, which made discussion time fruitful. Cannot recommend this enough.

Not my favorite…very dense. Some of the questions I read I had to re-read multiple times and I still didn’t understand what the author was asking. I’ve done other studies in a similar format to this and was able to retain a lot more information than this study, and this study was only covering one chapter.

Such an amazing deep dive into the small but powerful book of Jude. I appreciated her questions that lead you to read the context and understand what the Bible as a whole had to say about being called, beloved, and kept. A true keeper, forever changed by this small book and this powerful writer.

Wow, this Bible study is life changing. This book made me see the importance of contending for the faith. That each and every Christian should know the biblical foundations to contend for the faith, because how can we contend for something we ourselves do not know. And I’m talking about not our opinion, but knowing where to point unbelievers to in the BIBLE.

10/10 recommend. JHP does a great job of teaching us what Jude was all about. I have never looked at Jude this way & will never look at it the same way again. 🔥🔥🔥

I don't know how to rate this one. My small group had some great discussions about this one and I won't deny that the focus on God's holiness and therefore perfect justice was powerful, but knowing that the author is proudly ex-gay, it was easy to see her hang ups around sexuality in her constantly bringing us back to examples of sexual immorality.

In general studies that condemn the vague "culture" frustrate me because I bet the part of culture that doesn't feel like the body of Christ to me is very different than the part of culture the author's of the study are calling out, so while I had great discussions with the ladies in my group, I'm feeling pretty burnt out and frustrated after this one.

This is a faithful, deep, and challenging study over the book of Jude. I loved how this continually reminded me to consider the overarching themes throughout Scripture and challenged me to know and contend for what I believe. I appreciated how Jackie broke down ideas to seek clarity and brought in commentary from other Bible teachers as well. I am thankful for teaching of Scripture that ultimately points towards worship!

I want to pre-face this review by telling you that I am usually vehemently against so-called "women's" bible studies - at least those with these sorts of books. Why you ask? Well, because they are usually superficial and topical and are more about ourselves and our feelings than about God and His Word. So, when I was asked last September if I wanted to join a group of women from my church and do a women's study I was reluctant at best. I thought that I had given a firm no on joining. However, I guess God had other plans because I ended up saying yes, fully expecting that after a couple of weeks that I would see that it was just like every other study and I would drop out.
That didn't happen.
I also would like to point out that using this study with the videos is pretty important. And honestly, Jackie Hill Perry is a delight to listen to. She's well studied, articulate, and interesting. The video segments are about 15-20 minutes and I was into them.
Our group took their time with this study, we usually covered about a day's worth of homework per week and took 7 MONTHS to finish this....a ONE chapter book of the Bible. So, yeah, I'd say we went more in-depth than most studies. If you can do this study with a group, I think that would be ideal. If she had another study like this one going line by line through a book of the Bible, I would be on board with doing another study authored by Ms. Perry.
She breaks down each verse and has you study it carefully. This is not your typical women's study and I was so thankful for it. We learned how to recognize false teachers which is something just as relevant today as when the letter was written. We learned why it's important and necessary to contend for the faith. This study actually encourages real study of the Bible, pushes you to thoughtfully consider the words and the meanings, and begin to apply the Word in the context in which it was written. Well done Ms. Perry!

I gleaned a lot from this study. It was relevant, practical, and encouraging! I do think the questions could be much better (and I see many other reviewers agree). Sometimes they were written vaguely so I didn’t really understand what was being asked. Sometimes they were very shallow/low-level questions that seemed like busy work. They could be more intentionally designed to lead the reader into a better understanding of the text.

Despite the sometimes haphazard questioning, I would still recommend this study tool. I definitely recommend studying Jude whether using this tool or some other (anyone have one to recommend on this book?). Jude teaches us that God will preserve us and his letter exhorts us to stay true to the faith in a world whose ideals are constantly shifting. It’s easy to also shift under that pressure. Jackie Hill Perry does a pretty good job of breaking it all down, showing why we need to contend for the faith and how to do it, all while pointing back to the one who keeps us and empowers us to do so. The book of Jude gets 5/5 stars. JHP’s study book on Jude gets 3/5.

This Bible study was the most painful in the best way possible! Jackie’s study is an invitation to surgery. We dig into God’s holiness expressed in God’s hatred of sin, which inspires our thankfulness for God’s mercy toward us and in turn our mercy toward those who doubt. We rest in God’s power, praising Him for His strength that strengthens us and keeps us in His love. The crux of the book and the study can be summarized in my favorite quote, “The gospel is where the judgment of God and the forbearance of God and the mercy of God and this beloved love of God meet.” While the process may prove painful, the results reveal that in Christ, we are a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come (2 Cor. 5:17)! Jude begins with the bookend of prayer and ends with the bookend of praise! Pairs well with a photocopy of the book of Jude (pp. 8-9) and a plethora of pens (1 color for video teaching, 1 color for personal study, 1 color for group discussion--minimum!)
