This is the last book I had to read by Vashti Hardy and I'm so sad I have to wait for another one!
Twins Arthur and Maudie have already had quite the adventure in 'Brightstorm', but everything they've been through will be nothing compared to what they're about to face in the sequel, 'Darkwhispers'. There is a search for a missing explorer in the Eastern Isles, and the villainous Eudora Vane is leading the mission. Arthur and Maudie are determined to find out what she's up to, but it's not an easy journey for the Brightstorm twins at all!
If you want a series dripping with adventure, look no further than the Brightstorm series, and I loved Darkwhispers more than Brightstorm if you can believe it. The main characters are the most well-developed main characters I have read in middle grade, their relationship with one another and what they've been through and how it bonds them still is beautifully portrayed. So it goes without saying that Hardy is a warrior with her pen (or keyboard), the writing is perfect.
Eudora Vane is such a character too. As a villain, I loved reading her scenes. She's complex and not at all a pantomime villain; she read like a real person, and I love that in my villains. There is a wealth of characters in this that makes this a fantastic sequel, a blend of personalities that work so well together, but also are developed further when they're apart.
A simply sublime adventure sequel that manages to surpass the original.

This series is pure adventure that is enjoyed from start to finish.
I love this world more and more, it is really surprising, captivating and full of details that give it body and structure making it almost palpable.
Simply a reading luxury that you can give yourself to forget that the real world exists.

Finished this amazing book last night. I absolutely loved it, maybe even more than the 1st book-which says a lot since I loved that one so much. We follow the twins again & the same amazing characters as before. They go on a brand new adventure, & what an amazing adventure it is! They see more amazing things, & one place is SPECTACULAR. Described in such beautiful detail I could again see everything vividly! The author created such a unique & beautiful place-I wanted to go there so bad! Lol we have the same villain, & I despise them just as much-actually even more than before. The things they do in this book😡😡 We also get to have some chapters from Maudie’s point of view along w/Arthur’s chapters. I really enjoyed that. It was good to switch it up a bit. & it was important I think, since they were in different places sometimes. This book tore out my heart in some places, & I cried lol but it was an amazing story. Parthena still has my heart, & so does Valiant...he melted my heart! Harriet is still a fierce, strong legend..Felicity & her toes still have me too! Lol & Welby..oh Welby, I still adore him💜 Still a great sibling dynamic b/n the twins, but they are also growing & learning more..developing their own skills & learning who they are as individuals. It ended w/what could be an opening for a 3rd book, & I very badly need a 3rd book lol does anyone know if there will be one? Also, another beautiful cover, & still beautiful illustrations on every chapter page.😍😍 I highly recommend this book. Such a great author!!

Mijn ervaring:
Wauw! Wat een verrassend, spannend, fantasierijk en meeslepend avontuur. Vashti Hardy schrijft zo beeldend, actievol en vlot dat je vanaf de eerste pagina direct wordt meegezogen in het verhaal van Arthur en Maud.
In het eerste deel waren Maud en Arthur al sterk en met finesse uitgewerkt. Hun verschillen maken hen juist zo krachtig en levensecht, en als lezer sluit je hen direct in je hart. In dit tweede deel worden broer en zus van elkaar gescheiden, waardoor je nóg intenser met hen meeleeft. Bekende personages keren terug – zoals kapitein Harriët Colpeper en Wessel – maar er is ook ruimte voor nieuwe ontmoetingen en bijzondere vriendschappen. Vooral Arthur ondergaat tijdens dit verhaal een prachtige en geloofwaardige transformatie.
Het avontuur begint thuis, wanneer bekend wordt dat ontdekkingsreiziger Eduard Wrongelwaard is verdwenen. Aartsvijand Eudora Vervaan organiseert een grote reddingsmissie naar het mysterieuze continent Erythea. De zoektocht naar de vermiste Eduard Wrongelwaard groeit uit tot een verrassend, indrukwekkend en diep rakend avontuur. Vooral het plot en het slot weten je echt te grijpen. This book really shined as a 5 star for me. It just barely surpassed the first book for me with the first being a 4.5 star. But I really FELL in love with the Brightstorm twins in this one and their whole crew on their adventure in this one.
I cried when something I DIDN’T want to happen at all. (If you’ve read it you know what I’m most likely talking about) I adored Valiant and am so happy they’re still going to be around.
I really adored their adventure to a new place in this one and all the normal shenanigans that they got themselves into in this because it’s just SOO good. This one definitely has a bit of a darker side to it with the darkwhispers themselves but not completely. Also, with Arthur seeing what he wants to really do in the future where Maudie knows really want she wants.
I cannot wait to read the next one. Even though it’s sad that it’s only a trilogy and won’t have more after because I’d love more with them.

Das Buch ist gut geschrieben, sodass ich es nicht aus der Hand legen konnte. Der Schreibstil und die Geschichte waren einfach nur toll zu lesen.
Ich kannte den ersten Band nicht, sodass ich in die Geschichte "hineingeworfen" wurde, aber das fand ich persönlich nicht so schlimm. Gut, man kannte nicht alle zusammenhänge, aber einige konnte man sich nach und nach zusammenreimen.
Die Geschwister Arthur und Marie machen sich, zusammen mit ihrer neuen Crew, für eine neues Abenteuer. Dabei treffen Sie erneut auf Eudora Vane, die etwas mit dem Tod ihres Vaters zu tun haben scheint, die aber eine Armada losschicken will, um den vermissten Everest Wigglesworth zu suchen.
Dabei sind alle Wolkenschiffe verplant, jedoch stellt sich heraus, dass Eudora einen etwas anderen Plan verfolgt. Das wird noch im Laufe der Geschichte klar.
Ich habe mit den Zwillingen mitgefiebert und gehofft, dass sie das schaffen, was sie sich vorgenommen haben. Ich war hellauf vom Verlauf begeistert, habe leider auch ein paar Tränchen vergossen und finde, dass Eudora und Co. ihre gerechte Strafe erhalten haben...
Als Liebling dieses Buch muss ich ganz klar "Löwenzahn" benennen, gleich gefolgt von den Zwillingen und Felicitas...
Ich werde mir noch den ersten Band zulegen um die Reihe zu komplettieren und vernünftig in die Geschichte zu finden.

Arthur und Marie, die am Ende des 1. Teils der Buchreihe die Gewissheit haben, dass sie nun Waisen sind, wurden von der Harriet Culpfeffer und ihrer Mannschaft vom Wolkenschiff liebevoll in ihrer Gemeinschaft aufgenommen. Und machen sich auch im 2. Teil auf eine waghalsige Reise in fremde Welten. Diesmal gilt es, einen vermissten Entdecker aufzuspüren. Auch Erzrivalin Eudora Vane macht mit bei der Suche, doch anscheinend verfolgt sie dabei noch ganz andere Ziele.
Wie schon im ersten Band geraten die Protagonisten hier mehrmals in wirklich lebensbedrohliche Situationen. Zum Glück ist aber immer entweder Einfallsreichtum, Glück oder Hilfe von neuen Freunden zur Stelle. Die Geschichte ist phantasievoll, detailreich und wunderbar geschrieben. Man fiebert wirklich mit den Zwillingen und all ihren Freunden mit.
Das Buch ist aber mit 380 Seiten auch nicht gerade kurz und auch komplex, so dass man durchaus 'mitdenken' muss beim Lesen. Ich würde es daher eher für erfahrene Leser empfehlen.
Derzeit gibt es auch im Original noch keinen 3. Teil. Er würde sich bei dem Ende der Geschichte aber definitiv anbieten!

Ik vond dit deel wellicht een tikkeltje minder leuk dan het eerste deel, maar zeker zo warm, spannend en slecht weg te leggen. Deel 1 heeft meer Philip Pullman-vibes, dit deel een meer nautische quest naar en verborgen gebleven gebied dat me deed denken aan de overzeese wereld in Leigh Bardugo’s trilogie.
Found familie, eerlijkheid, een stoer technisch meisje en een zachtaardige jongen die toevallig één arm heeft (en niet per se een hulparm hoeft) - een heel fijne, verfrissende serie in de leeftijdscategorie 10-14 jaar.

Yay! Finally finished this book after several tries previously, every time I would get to the middle and give up. I guess I wasn’t in the right mood for it? 🤔
This time I did enjoy it, there was a bit of a twist near the end which I thought was a good thing to add in there and I nearly cried when Welby died 😔😢 and hearing about his memories
I didn’t really know what rating to give this book but in the end I gave it 3 stars ⭐️ 😊

4,25 ⭐️ - Ce deuxième tome m’a conquise. Tout comme le premier livre, j’ai apprécié l’univers et les personnages.
J’ai aimé vivre de nouvelles aventures avec les jumeaux et leurs proches, découvrir de nouveaux paysages et de nouvelles péripéties. Le nouveau continent exploré est très intéressant et apporte quelque chose au récit. Bonne lecture ! Un peu prévisible par moment mais ça reste une lecture agréable, c’est aussi ce que je recherchais dans cette lecture « jeunesse »
J’ai aimé vivre de nouvelles aventures avec les jumeaux et leurs proches, découvrir de nouveaux paysages et de nouvelles péripéties. I have fallen in love with this series! All the characters are so brilliant. I can’t wait for the next one (please dear god let there be a next one).
Also this book was much more it’s own story than the first one. My only criticism for the first book was that I saw too many parallels in the world / characters with the Northern Lights, but that was gone in this one making it an even more enjoyable read.

I loved this second book in the fantasy series, Brightstorm. The characters are fun and the banter is enjoyable. The adventure is not scary, but has lots of twists and turns as the two twins encounter strange new creatures and characters in a newly discovered land.
The villains are a bit caricatured but this is not meant to be a realistic book, but more a fun adventure.
Vashti Hardy is a great storyteller and I read it very quickly.
Anyone that likes fantasy or adventure genres would enjoy this.

Mystery lurks over the Brightstorm twins again, only this time Eudora will meet her twist of dreadful fate. Take a moment to plough through Brightstorm (sequel one) and appreciate the rollercoaster of interlinking past time events. A richness of imagination sets the deliberate undergrowth making Darkwhispers (sequel two) a treasure within itself. Highly recommended for all age groups and positively reinforcing for creators of Art.

This book was received as an ARC from W. W. Norton & Company - Norton Young Readers in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.
I was intensely focused on the plot of this story and I did however find that many events jumped around a bit making it very difficult to understand the overall direction of this book until I got to the middle of the book and them all of the pieces started to come together. I believe in my opinion the reasoning for that was the determination and the plan of Captain Harriet Culpepper in the search for Eudora but she is also on another mission that has shaken the whole plan up when Eudora Vain goes missing being a wrench in their plans. When it all came together, the story was jam packed with an action-filled adventure that is sure to attract many of the young audience. This could potentially be a nomination for our next Battle of the Books competition.
We will consider adding this title to our JFiction collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.

Η δεύτερη περιπέτεια των Μπράιτστορμ κινείται στα ίδια περίπου ρηχά νερά με την πρώτη. Ενώ η συγγραφέας έχει δομήσει ένα εξαιρετικά ενδιαφέροντα κόσμο, ειδικά για τους νεαρούς αναγνώστες, με στοιχεία εξερεύνησης και steampunk αισθητική, δυστυχώς αποτυγχάνει παταγωδώς να δώσει μία αξιοπρεπή περιπέτεια ή έστω κάτι που να αξίζει πραγματικά να διαβαστεί. Είναι κρίμα γιατί θα μπορούσε να είναι ο China Miéville της νεανικής λογοτεχνίας. Αντ' αυτού σερβίρει στο κοινό μάλλον αδιάφορες περιπέτειες με εξαιρετικά δισδιαστατους χαρακτήρες.
Όχι εντελώς χάλια, αλλά σίγουρα θα περίμενε κανείς περισσότερα.

Ein weiteres grandioses Abenteuer in unerforschten Welten
Wir sind zurück an Bord der Aurora, dem fantastischen Wolkenschiff der mutigen Entdeckerin Harriet Culpfeffer, deren Crew sich die Zwillinge Arthur und Marie auf der Suche nach ihrem Vater im ersten Band der Reihe angeschlossen haben. Zum besseren Verständnis sollte man den ersten Band vorab gelesen haben, ehe man sich auf das neue Abenteuer begibt.
In diesem Abenteuer begeben wir uns mit Arthur und Marie auf die Suche nach dem vermissten Abenteuer Everest Wriggelsworth, der auf den unerforschten östlichen Inseln vor vielen Monaten verschollen ist. Die zwielichtige Entdeckerin Eudora Vane hat dafür viele Wolkenschiffe versammelt, um die Mission gemeinsam zum Erfolg zu führen. Doch die Crew glaubt nicht, dass dies ihr wahres Anliegen ist. Und als Arthur von der Legende um den mystischen Feuervogel hört, ist ihm schnell klar, das mehr hinter der Reise steckt. Doch sie hätten nie gedacht, was sie alles an aufregenden Entdeckungen und dramatischen Ereignissen erwartet in diesen neuen Welten.
Wie auch schon der erste Band kann das neue Abenteuer wieder auf ganzer Länge begeistern. Die Crew ist mittlerweile wie eine Familie für Arthur und Marie und alle begeistern durch ihre Einzigartigkeit. Zudem ist es schön zu beobachte, wie unterschiedlich die Zwillinge doch sind und wie beide mit ihren ganz eigenen Stärken glänzen können. Dazu die Rivalität zwischen den Entdeckerfamilien, zwielichtige und überraschende Charaktere, eine spannende und wendungsreiche Geschichte und die Faszination von fremden unentdeckten Welten mit spannender Flora und Fauna. Jedes Abenteurerherz schlägt etwas schneller, wenn man sich auf die Reise begibt mit dieser tollen Crew. Rasant erzählt und mit leicht lesbarer Sprache kann man sich ganz auf das Abenteuer einlassen und wird super unterhalten. Die britischen außergewöhnlichen Namen und das Flair von Steampunk kreieren zudem noch einmal eine ganz eigene tolle Atmosphäre.

Two twins Arthur and Maudie set out to find the lost explorer ( Ermitage Wrigglesworth) travelling on their sky ships.
Arthur thinks there is a forth continent he stays on the Aurora sky ship but when he hears voices coming towards the ship he hides and Eudora Vane sets sail as she is on the hunt for the forth continent, she travels past the dark whispers (mythical creatures), she’s looking for gold but when she pretends to be Harriet Culpepper the island people seem to welcome her, but when they find out she’s not who she sais she is, they lock her away and think of a punishment, to send her to the dark whispers… they take away her memories.
But when Harriet and her crew sail to the island and the dark whispers attack there ship there set to crash when a fire bird helps Harriet through safely to the island.
She’s lost her friends and when she finds a shelter under a cave she falls asleep only to wake up with the cave flooding, a water bear comes to save her and then helps her get her strength back.
After Harriet climbs the top of a tree and spots someone looking at her from another tree, she falls, luckily she is secured. But when that person arrives, she accepts his help and follows him to help find her Arthur and the crew that crashes with her.
She is going to confront Eudora that she is impersonating her and to take back treasure from the island. When Eudora gets found out they lock her and her crew away, but then she escapes, she kills 7 of the water bears after finding the pink crystals in the cave and travels to the Aurora so she can get home safely.
But Arthur, Harriet and Maudie all help to get the crystals of Eudora the dark whispers follow and they take away Eudora’s and the crew’s memories from them.

It has been a long-time coming for me to finally write a review for this book! I finished it a few months back, and I am still obsessed with just how brilliant the storyline, themes, and character development are. This was a gripping sequel to the already amazing first book in the series, Brightstorm. The cast of characters are unique, loveable, and so heartwarming. This series features themes of found family, environmentalism, preserving indigenous flora and fauna, and Hardy criticizes destructive exploration in a way that all can appreciate.
I cannot express enough how important this book is to help conceptualize crucial topical issues that society has experienced throughout history and still today. Hardy does all of this while transporting us to an entirely different, vibrant world with Arthur and Maudie–two dynamic, brilliant young protagonists–to guide us.
I am desperate to read book 3, Firesong, and then proceed to reread this series over and over again.

Vashti Hardy offers an enthralling escape with these novels. The world she has created feels real and vivid, her main characters are driven by a powerful and heart-wrenching purpose (making them both relatable and inspirational) and the plot is an exploratory delight of twists and turns. Unlike other recent books I have read, I didn't find this so much a fast-paced, edge of your seat rollercoaster ride but rather what I imagine a sky-ship ride to be in itself: breath-taking, full of wonder and truly unique. Just the mention of 'Thought Wolves' and 'Water Bears' and a city built on the edge of a waterfall makes my spine tingle.
Brightstorm was the first book I have listened to in audio format for many years. As I drove the several hours from my destination to home in the dark, I became completely enraptured by the story. The intoxicating nature of 'The Wide' draws you in and rocks you like a lullaby with sharp punctures of shocking reveal. The crew feels like family and was it was a joy to return to them in the sequel.
Darkwhispers offers the discovery of a new land and a really interesting, refreshing and positive take on the theme of ecology, archaeology and how humans and nature could potentially unify as one. Instead of preaching to us, Hardy shows us an insight into an alternative reality where nature is respected, revered yet enhanced to accommodate the needs of the population. Through Eudora Vane, Hardy also clearly highlights the flaws of humanity and how the future of a nation and continent relies on the attitudes and insight of the people. It gave me hope for what the future of our planet could hold - in the right hands of course!
So, if you want to lose yourself in an awe-inspiring, hope-filling adventure with fantastically plucky characters who emcompass ambition, aspiration and determination, I highly recommend giving these books a place on your shelves. You won't regret it!

Je remercie les Éditions Auzou pour l’envoi de cette lecture. Il y a quelques semaines de ça, je vous parlais du premier tome de cette saga, aujourd’hui je vous retrouve pour vous parler du deuxième qui est sortie récemment.
Les jumeaux Arthur et Maudie ont vécu une aventure vraiment extraordinaire. Malgré leurs jeunes âges, ils ont déjà beaucoup voyagé. Ils ont réussi à réhabiliter leur nom de famille, mais leur tante Eudora Vane prépare de nouveau un mauvais coup…
En effet, un explorateur a disparu dans les îles orientales. Ce n’est pas n’importe lequel, c’est Ermitage Wrigglesworth. Le problème, c’est qu’après avoir entendu une conversation d’Eudora Vane, les jumeaux sont certains qu’elle prépare de nouveau un mauvais coup.
L’univers reste toujours aussi plaisant à lire et à découvrir, comme dans le premier tome. J’adore vraiment l’imagination dont fait preuve l’auteur autant dans le premier livre que dans le second.
Pour autant, j’avais un peu plus de mal à rentrer dans l’histoire de ce deuxième tome. Certains passages traînaient trop en longueur à mon goût. Cela reste très subjectif bien sûr !
En bref, un second tome plaisant, mais qui m’a moins emballé que le premier. Le style d’écriture de l’auteur reste toujours prenant et captivant. L’univers du roman est magnifique. Une saga vraiment idéale si on a envie de voyager.

Marie und Arthur erleben ein neues Abenteuer. Diesmal geht es über die Grenzen ihrer bekannten Welt hinaus. Mit dabei ist wieder die Crew des Wolkenschiffs von Harrriet Culpfeffer, auch ihre Erzfeindin Eudora Vance ist mit von der Partie und führt wieder nichts Gutes im Schilde.
Es ist wieder eine Geschichte mit Steampunk, magischen Lebewesen und tollen Menschen.
Am Anfang haben mich die Rückblicke auf den ersten Band sehr gestört. Sie waren meiner Ansicht nach in dieser Form nicht nötig, es wirkte wie Werbung für das erste Buch. Wenn man es schon gelesen hat, ist es überflüssig. Für alle anderen ist die Aufforderung es auch zu lesen zu direkt.
Die Geschichte an sich ist wieder gut gelungen. Die Mischung aus Abenteuer und Fantasy ist sehr spannend. Diesmal erleben die Zwillinge ihre Abenteuer manchmal getrennt. Dabei kommen die unterschiedlichen Stärken der beiden gut zum Ausdruck. Es zeigt den Lesern das auch Zwillinge eigenständige sehr unterschiedliche Kinder sein können. Wurde es vorher immer nur erwähnt das Marie die handwerklich technisch versierte von beiden ist und Arthur mehr mit dem Kopf aber dafür spontaner handelt, wird es hier deutlich erzählt das beides seine Vorzüge hat und auch beides eine Schwäche bedeuten kann. Gemeinsam sind wir stark, eine schöne Aussage die sich nicht nur auf die Zwillinge bezieht sondern auf alle Menschen in diesem Buch.
Ich hoffe es wird weitere Abenteuer geben.

Plot:
Something slinks through the night. AF are living their new lives in lontown, there is a meeting to decide what the new exploration will be: they decided that they will be having an armada to look for (i forgot his name).
At the end AF get ownership of brightstorm house, instead of leaving felicity and harriet, they rename it welbys’ manor and takes in the homeless; welby was homless. Vane seems to have lost her memory. Or has she?
What you didn’t like:
Something I have noticed in brightstorm and darkwhispers that the beginning of the book doesn’t seem to draw me in. The middle of the story gets a bit better. But the ending is the best, thats when my emotions had been put I a safe place but then they were destroyed, and I loved that (I nearly cried).

Being a sequel, the 4xx pages and the slow begging for me I would recommend that

5 stars - Darkwhispers continues the saga of the Brightstorm twins and the crew of the Aurora as they attempt to find lost explorer Ermitage Wrigglesworth. However, Eudora Vane is once again plotting and planning in the background and the twins will have to use all their skills and wit to thwart her plans.
A wonderful escape back into the world of the Brightstorm children, Darkwhispers not only matches but surpasses (which I didn't think possible) the genius and fantastic story of the first book. It remains an uplifting and fun tale that does not shy away from the darker aspects of adventuring - and caused me to have a cry on more than one occasion. I felt everything with our main characters. It was great to see Eudora Vane become more of a multifaceted and genuine person along with being a great villian. The way the story ended with her is sublime and I honestly cannot wait for future instalments. The rest of the cast were also fantastic and I personally fell in love with them all over again. The pacing is fantastic and kept me entertained throughout - I was able to read it in a day because I could not put it down.
A fantastically written story, that translates well to audio with a brilliant narrator - would recommend this series.

This is a fantasy children's book and is a sequel to a previous adventure. Not having read the prior story did not adversely affect my understanding of this one, except that I realized as I read along that I was missing some parts.
Arthur and Maudie, sister and brother twins, are very different, but both adventurous. And in my opinion, very intelligent, even for their thirteen years. The story involves their travels on a sky-ship! A what-ship? Yes, a ship that flies. And along with that, Maudie invents another unusual but very patent-worthy vessel herself during the course of the book.
The basis of this book's adventure is to find an explorer who has been missing for a period of time, but not beyond the realm of possibility of being found. That search keeps the plot on target throughout the book. There are the good guys and bad guys and by 'guys' I do not necessarily mean humans or even one sex or the other.
Without giving anything away, I think middle school children would totally enjoy the story and the book and find it easy to read.
