Davey's Rules #3

Rules for Santa

Rate this book
Rule #18: Daddy’s boy will always believe in his Santa Daddy.

Homeless, alone, and now jobless, Cameron Evans is lost… until he’s found after a prominent local attorney literally trips over him when the boy is passed out from dehydration.

Scott Hendrickson has two things in life: his job as an assistant district attorney, and his son Davey. Other than that, he lives alone in a house that’s too big, too empty, too… lonely.

It’s not just Cameron’s life that might change for the better when Scott takes him in. Scott can provide material things and security, but Cameron returns the favor by breathing fresh air into Scott’s stale life.

Two men who need each other… one magical holiday season. Could a little Christmas magic be all that’s needed to bring the biggest gift of all? Maybe Cameron doesn’t need a Sugar Daddy… because he already has a Santa Daddy.

This is the third book in a series about not-so-perfect Daddies, adorable “boys,” and one sassy brat with an insane list of rules. Get ready for all the squishy holiday feels you’d want from a Susan Hawke book.

Definitely another win from fan favorite Susi Hawke! 👏 Let me tell you, I loved Davey’s rules book 1, “Rules to Follow”. But I just adore this third book “Rules for Santa”. 🥰 I haven’t listened the book two yet and I think this one can perfectly standalone but for the maximum enjoyment for this one, I think you should at least listen book 1 before diving into this. ☺️

To say Cameron’s feeling down in the dumps would be the understatement of the year. After being kicked out by his bastard father for being gay at the tender age of 20, Cameron is now homeless, jobless and has literally passed out in an alleyway. But his luck is changing for the better. After literally being tripped over by silver fox assistant district attorney Mr. Scott Hendrickson, this vulnerable boy has awoken protective feelings inside the daddy bear. Scott has a great life, a great job, a loving son and a good home but he’s lonely and he’s been lonely for a long long time. Now, his life has a new purpose. To take Cameron in, cherish him, love him and protect him. Both men need each other and they know that themselves too. May be with an unsubtle push from Scott’s bratty son Davey, these two could finally yield to their desires and to that inexplicable pull and attraction that’s so strong and tangible.

What I especially love about this book is that this is completely angst free and I needed that at this moment. 🥰 I just wanted to listen a feel-good, heartwarming, swoony romance that would leave me feel gooey and go “awwww”. 💜 Let me just say Scott and Cameron together is just too precious. I love it! 😍 Despite what you might think from the blurb, this is a slow-burn and sweet love story that just makes you believe in holiday miracles. As always, Michael Pauley did a good job narrating this love story. I just adore his Cameron voice and Davey’s. 😁 I really can’t wait to get to bratty Davey’s turn to find love. A perfect listen for coming holiday season. Highly recommended! 🥰

Utterly charming and ridiculously cute.

I loved this one, it's a perfect festive romance as Davey's dad finds his perfect sweet boy totally by accident after an incident in a restaurant.

Both Scott and Cameron were well-rounded characters with their own quirks and I really appreciated the lack of relationship drama.

Silly and sweet, with just enough corn to make me smile, Susan Hawke's Rules for Danta is a wonderful feel-good Christmas story.

I’ve enjoyed how different each of the stories in this series are, but I’m a sucker for the age-gap in this one. Cameron and Scott are simply perfect together.

One of the highlights for me is how much Davey time we get in this one! The opening scene between Davey and his dad gives great insight into Davey's character, and it's hilarious to see them interacting. These two have a fantastic dynamic!

There are a few sad and poignant moments in Rules for Santa. Hawke touches on homelessness, bigotry, speech impediments, and alcoholism, but manages to keep the overall mood uplifting and hopeful.

I listened to the audio version narrated by Michael Pauley. He's doing an amazing job with this series, and his charm and humorous delivery had me laughing out loud the whole way through.

Same as before, I still think Brady and Preston are my favorite, but Scott and Cameron are pretty cute!

3-3.5 stars: August 2022

well wasn't this a bundle of Christmas joy. haha set at Christmas time, this is about Davey's dad Scott and his boy Cameron.

For a shorter book this was good, but the relationship felt more rushed than the other books, but i still enjoyed the holiday spirit in this book.

I mean it only feels appropriate to read a Christmas book in August, since Halloween/Thanksgiving decorations have been showing up in stores since July... haha

I am very excited for Landon and Mikey's book since they have been secondary characters from the start! so happy to get a peek in to their lives!

Well, this was fun, but boy were the sex scenes awful. I couldn’t handle one more ‘candy cane’ or ‘north pole’ joke during sex.

It was sweet though. But veeeeeeeeeeeeeeery cheesy.

I just can't with this writing. I don't understand the popularity of some books.

The older MC's son is a total spoilt flake who likes to poke his tongue out all the time. This is not a child.

Older MC, forget his name - hang on. It's Scott - is a creepy dude. Young guy in hospital for malnutrition and dehydration, having Nora the bitch accounts woman guilting him, having just lost his job, and Scott is intensely and creepily in his face. Then he calls him sweetheart and sweetie and he's only just met him. Dude, give it a rest. Then he takes him home, 'I'm not kidnapping you, I'm the assistant DA'. Yeah, no legal professional has ever done anything sexually inappropriate.

Snickering.

Too much winking.

And just a dumbing down of the dialogue in general:

My father chuckled, wagging a finger at me like one of those things that keeps time on top of a piano.

It's called a metronome, ffs.

What's so hard about Kowalski?

"Thank you, Doctor… Kowalski. Tell me, are malnutrition and dehydration enough to explain a lapse in consciousness? When I found him, Cameron was completely out of it and I couldn't rouse him."
"Oh, definitely. For sure. That was low blood sugar and exhaustion." He chuckled ruefully. "Things I'm a little too familiar with these days. You can call me Dr. Chris, by the way; that’s easier to remember than Kowalski."

And let's just chuckle inappropriately at malnutrition and dehydration, shall we, Dr Kowalski? I don't care that ruefully is added. The actions are all wrong for the situation. And C.H.R.I.S., you're an unprofessional and shitty doctor.

Jesus. I'm too old for this shit. The best thing about this book is the cover.

This series has such awesome content and across the stories there is Davey, the most lovable guy with a list of rules for Daddy’s and boys.

Having their lunch, Davey and his father Scott, watch a beautiful young busboy fail at every task. In the end, the beautiful ginger got thrown outside without a job.
When Scott gets to his car he stumbles over some feet. There lies the young busboy, unconscious, with a backpack in front of him.
Scott finds out Cameron is homeless and dehydrated and in need of care.
Scott takes him home, to his big lonely home and there starts a very sweet and kind relationship.

Cameron is twenty years old and his biggest Christmas wish is to have his own Daddy.
Scott, at forty-eight, just reached the point to search for love again, he so wants to take care of this baby boy.

It’s the perfect picture, the perfect timing for both at the perfect time of the year!
What follows is just the cutest, sugar sweetest story. We get to know Cameron and Scott better, we experience the kind environments Davey works in and how he is the best wittiest son on this earth. The careful way Scott handles Cam is endearing. The joy Cam gives Scott is so lovable. They are perfect together.

The whole story breathes kindness and comfort and there is even some sexiness. There is a lot of easygoing humor and witty comments in this story. The characters were all very lovable, Davey is absolutely one of the highlights! The Daddy Club and his owners have of course a place in this story.
There are hurtful moments and times with reflections, but always with feelings of hope, and the knowledge and trust it will be good at the end. It was so relaxed to read a story where you know firsthand everything will work out just fine.
The whole picture was endearing, all smoothly written with just the right comfortable pace, it had entertainment on every page. I got a bit giddy from all the cuteness from these guys. I enjoyed it all very!

???!

Assistant District Attorney Scott rescues homeless, adorable Cameron during the Christmas season and receives the best gift of all. I have mixed feelings about this holiday tale. To be honest, I did not warm to the Scott character (Davey’s Dad) from Book 1. He came across as a bit superficial and a bit of a lightweight. In this installment, he seems a bit creepy, and odd. I felt that Scott coerced or manipulated Cameron into accepting gifts, especially in the very beginning. Then, I can’t imagine anyone accepting such extravagances after meeting a stranger the day before and not wondering about expectations of some type of payback; or sexual favors. Also, Davey in this storyline, and Cameron, both came across little too immature and a bit silly. This was supposed to be a sweet, cutesy holiday tale but it felt a bit off. Although, it did even out a bit towards the end. Rating: 2.75⭐️⭐️

Merry Christmas!

Omg, the Daddy's Rules books are refreshing, funny, sweet, sassy, and may be just a little bit perfect.

Cameron is really a total sweetheart. How could anyone ever want to hurt that precious boy? Scott is a good guy, which makes him perfect for Cameron and being a Daddy.

So, so, so very sweet LOL

Not that that's a bad thing - if you're in the mood for the sweetest of sweet age gap, Daddy/boy story, then this might just be about perfect. I would have preferred maybe a bit more heat a bit earlier into the story, but for a feel-good holiday story between Santa Daddy and his elf boy, this was so very sweet!

Destructive information

I wanted to like this book, but I can’t. It’s the worst kind of campy, everyone is annoying, and nothing is even remotely believable. Romance stories are best when they are a series of unlikely but possible events, but this ain’t that. I’ve tried this author several times because her plots look good, but she uses cliched tropes that are tired and in this case harmful.

PSA moment. With 20 years of professions experience I can promise you that a 20 year old, kicked out of his house and physically or mentally assaulted by their father for being gay would simply have to walk into his schools financial aid office and would be made independent from his abusive parents and get financial aid. It has absolutely nothing to do with being on his parents tax return or living with his parents for six months. Homeless students or students at risk of homelessness will be made independent 99.99% of the time by talking to their financial aid office. Perpetuating misinformation like this in a story about such an at risk group as gay college bound youth is—I’m sure is not coming from a malicious place but one of regulatory ignorance—harmful. There are real protections and options in place for gay and homeless youth for higher education. Please, for everyone’s sake, put that in your stories rather than using misinformation to advance a plot line.

Santa Daddy & the North Pole

Eeek, it's Davey's father's book and I can see where Davey gets his personality. I'm with Davey on the bread that looks like chocolate, so disappointing. Cameron seems to be in serious need of rescuing and Scott is just the daddy for the job, but I'd also argue that Scott needed rescuing and Cameron helped save him from himself. Oh, Cameron, you’re so sweet; I just want to snuggle and hide you away from the world. Scott is so patient, protective and caring. “I won’t allow anyone to hurt you again.” I think he may be my favorite daddy in this series. The Christmas shopping and decorating scenes warmed my heart and made me sigh with happiness.

I have to say Cameron’s dad is a despicable human being. What a wretched grinch! I loved watching Cameron slowly become more confident and how Scott stood by him for each step. With Scott, he learned there’s more to life than work and it was beautiful. Holy Porkmas, Santa! I bet Cameron’s an adorable elf and Santa has never been sexier! Together they make the sweetest couple, and the Santa puns were hilarious. Even though this book wasn’t about Davey, I enjoyed seeing the new sides to him. I’m looking forward to his story. A fantastic, sweet holiday daddy story that you’ll want to read while drinking cocoa.

What an unexpectedly super sweet winter romance!
Daddy Santa focuses on Davey's father, Scott, and Cameron, a young man fully down on his luck who Scott literally trips over after he passes out from dehydration.
Scott is the type of daddy that just wants to care for his boy and no one deserves that more than Cameron. My heart broke for him when we read about the way he's been treated and how things have turned out for him. Together, even before any romance is involved, they make an adorable pair with a lot of heartwarming moments, Cameron not wanting to be in the way or too much trouble and Scott wanting to protect and care for him any way he can.
This has to be one of my favourite daddy/boy stories that I've read. There is a lot of obvious care and emotion for both men. It's cute, romantic and a slow burn that just eases you through this contemporary romance. A definite recommended read!
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

Super sweet holiday fun as Davey's Dad finds himself a sugar baby.
When their poor waiter gets fired, Davey's dad finds the poor thing passed out in the parking lot from dehydration and hunger. He can't possibly leave the boy like that. He doesn't even have a coat.

Dear Santa all this boy wants for Christmas is a sweet older daddy to take care of him.

A perfect Christmas. A cute new boy, and one how Santa Daddy equal a charming and cozy holiday read, perfect for a night in front of the fire with a cup of coco. It's not my top Susi read, but it's absolutley up there! 4/5

2.5 Stars rounded to 3 on GR but only because the hurt/comfort was strong and I loved how Scott took care of his boy overall. But there are a lot of buts. Fair warning outside the norm review below.

As noted, it is a great theme - older established MC finds homeless young guy who was thrown out for being gay. However, at times that older MC felt a bit creepy honestly. I didn't feel much romantic or sexual chemistry or tension except that of parent/child/caregiver and yeah --- not the way you want to feel with this type of Daddy kink with age gap. I just have to share that Davey (the MC's son) was completely obnoxious and immature and I'm not going to venture into his book at all - if this is how he acts. I detest immature bratty MC's who are written as brats for the sake of a kink trope - including sticking out of the tongue and other childish actions - it's just NMK (not my kink) so I stay far away. IF that behavior is a cover for deeper emotions that get exploration and time to evolve then yes. If not then no. I know brat behavior is a kink for many so if this is your kink you will love him.

Here the language felt very immature or maybe dumbed down in many cases by both men (yes even the nearly 50 year old!). I like this author a lot, but I cannot deny that there can be a "teenage girl" in many of her books - giggling, crying, and generally acting more like high school than college. Sometimes it is exaggerated and that's where I just get -- ugh. Not with it. Also the idea only young men who are 20 like video games. I am a 53 year old female AND a gamer so it bums me out when it is treated as solely some youthful activity and comes off very stereotypical.

I really wish the maturity level of the MC's could ratchet up here. Even Cameron's Dad comes off as caricature bad guy who does stupid things in public. No. Just no.

Then there is the sex scene which felt just very awkward and strange and it almost came out of left field even at 70-80% or so in (don't remember exactly when). I honestly almost skipped it because there was a creep factor. It's more the package than an individual thing. Immature MC's, giggling and emoting all over the place, language that feels off and not that of two adults. Strange actions on characters parts.

So why 3 stars? I love the trope - and I thought the hurt/comfort was strong and feel good. It was saccharine sweet - like need dental work sweet -- but there are gems here and there in it that I enjoyed including Cameron's internal dialogue changing a bit. Would have liked to see much more of that type of evolution as this would move the maturity level up and given a better way for Scott to react. Also almost an extra star for tackling the idea of college and costs and just how fragile and unsure it can be to get financial aid and funding and such. I liked the chef angle and wish it had been introduced much earlier and more made of it. Procedurally I'll ignore the Federal privacy regulations which would not have let Scott do what he did with registering and paying for classes. I will also ignore that Cameron had other options if he was in college with regard to being made independent and getting aid. BUT it would be good to do more research as this is such a hot topic in public now the opportunity to really get the facts right is high. So, I'm treating this like fiction. But I liked that exposure and that is another anchor that could have provided depth and growth and accuracy with a message (not hitting us about the head but just explained well) but gets abandoned. There are a lot of college students who are homeless or so close to it and this was such a good chance to share that message. (If you are interested check out #realcollege on twitter).

So unpopular opinion - I don't do this very often (critique like this) but I genuinely feel like this author has a lot of talent and so felt obligated to share. There's already quite a following -- so just know YMMV.

3.5 sweetness stars for the pure fluff of Santa and his special elf.

This was way fluffier than I anticipated. Well, I suppose that's not entirely accurate. This was about as sweet as I hoped it would be, but I think there was a certain depth that was lacking to really make this a fantastically sweet story rather than a typically nice, fluffy one.

Cameron definitely needed help. His life was falling apart and only his soft heart and endearing vulnerability kept him from sinking into the deep end. His good fortune was Scott and they clicked right from the start with each of the men calling to something previously unnamed within both of them. I really liked the pacing of their evolution. If you pretend the timeline is longer than we know it is, Scott and Cameron take their time moving into the more physical intimacy. They really start building something between them based on caring, support, understanding, and quite a lot of foresight and self-restraint. When we leave them they're supremely happy and have a whole life of happiness ahead of them.

Scott has his life thrown on its head from one short encounter and he falls into all the changes with a light heart. The desire to care for Cameron is believable and natural for the type of person we come to know him as. While I think everything happened a little too easily, it was clear from the beginning that Scott is a good man, a good father, and is at a point in his life where he's ready for and needs a change that will save him from years of loneliness. I think he's a good man who finds his special best friend in Cameron and I'm glad they work so well together.

There is pretty much no conflict except for an altercation and a bout of jealousy, but other than that there was very, very little to get in the way of fluff-central that pretty much served as the foundation, structure, and filling of the story. I never thought I'd ever think this in my life, but apparently you can have too much sweetness. While I think the story is nice and quite good, I was hoping for something with a little more weight, some meat to really be caught by the book and their characters. There were quite a few basic introductions to side characters that you just know will get their own story. I hope very hard that the rest of this series takes a cue or few from the Lovestrong series with its rich stories and compelling characters.

I have to admit, the Daddy trope isn’t my favorite, although I like a silver fox, but there is something about this series that has just grabbed me. It’s funny, snarky, sassy, with a little bit of angst. This one broke my heart some more, especially after reading the last one. But it’s still a good book. And with the holiday season coming up, it’s a book of hope and a bit of Santa Daddy miracles.
Cameron captured my heart in this book. Having been kicked out of his home, because of his asshole father, he was struggling to survive. Even at the job he had. But seeing Scott kept throwing him off balance at the restaurant and he kept dropping and breaking stuff and was fired. Now not only was he homeless, he was jobless. And when Scott found him again, passed out from failing health. But something about Cameron captured Scott and wouldn’t let him go. He was even more pissed about his situation when he found out who his family was. But Scott was determined to provide this young man with safety and security, and maybe down the road, something else. Cameron keeps wishing on a star that his wish will come true for a Daddy of his own. Maybe this year, his dreams will come true.
Cameron. Oh my gah, what is it with these cutie pie little twinks that just get me? He’s just so little and adorable and when he finally smiles and is happy, he lights up the world. I just love him. He thinks he’s not bringing anything to the table when Scott spoils him rotten, as he deserves to be, but he doesn’t realize, he’s brought life back into Scott. Scott’s been lonely and finding Cameron has brought so much joy and happiness in his life. It’s just the sweetest little story. All the happiness and magic of the season. Cameron just makes you happy to be alive with his little giggles and sass. He’s so shy and nervous most of the time, that when he relaxes and blossoms, it’s such a beautiful thing to behold.
This series has definitely captured my attention and I love it.

This was cute, but definitely a bit of insta-love and a fast paced romance. Cameron was a sweet guy down on his luck and Scott was a rich lawyer who found him and took him in. Scott seemed to throw an awful lot of money at Cam which kind of made me cringe a bit. Luckily Cam was a sweetheart who wasn’t in it for the money to make it seem like a ploy. The daddy stuff was slightly over the top for my preferences (I prefer reading when it is more scene play versus every day dynamic), but it really was just my preference. I do wish there was a little more resolution with Cam’s family. It seemed to wrap up way too easily. Good overall story, though. The narration was done well and was enjoyable.

This book was amazing! Not only are the Christmas puns hilarious, but the story is so sweet. I love how Scott (Davey's dad) is so caring and wants to provide for Cameron. Cameron who has never had anyone care about him definitely needs someone in his life who cares about him and wants him to succeed. This story was a great Christmas story, with mistletoe and a sassy Davey. Highly recommend reading!
