Written for any woman who’s ever sought out an accessible introduction to the world of investing, this book is especially suited to women interested in learning how investing works and taking guided action towards their financial success.
I thought this book would give me more lessons on investment, but it turned out to be more about a book that makes the case why women of color should consider investing.
It's true that the investment field is dominated by white cis men, and financial advisors target more this audience. However, the author shares how it is beneficial to pay attention to the benefits of investment for financial security and independence.
The advice in this book is not anything out of what the general investment advice you can find in other books. I did like it because it was easy to read and follow, but didn't feel like I learned anything particular new. It could be a good first book for folks who have never thought about investment before.
Good book if you don’t know much about investing and are interested in learning - especially if you’re a woman (Bola Sokunbi specifically is writing to women here, hence the name of her company CleverGirl Finance). That said, guys will benefit from the book too.
It really only focuses on investing in the stock market though and doesn’t talk about other asset options (real estate or creative assets for instance). Still, that narrow focus serves a purpose by making the book a simple, practical introduction to investing so I can’t fault it too much.
I won’t read it again but it was worth my time time to “sharpen the saw.” If you’re only gonna ever read one financial book, this isn’t the one. However, if you, like me, try to read one or two a year or if you are already responsible with your money and just want to learn to invest then this could be a good choice.
Fantastic book to get you started to learn about investing. Wish I read this years ago, but as the book echos, it's never too late to start investing to ensure your financial freedom!
Definitely feeling immensely inspired from this book and have learned a lot to feel confident to get started building long term wealth 🙌. I recommend to look up all these women she interviews at the end of each chapter, follow them on social media, and then just learn from them! Through this book I found out about the Zero Based Budget and have gained a lot of knowledge on budgeting strategies/financial planning.
Clever girls CAN hire someone to manage your investments, but why not save the fees and learn about it yourself?
I enjoy reading personal finance books. Coming from a background of zero wealth or wealth knowledge, I embarked on my journey of financial freedom last year. I started by reading the first book of Bola Sokunbi which is "Clever Girl Finance". I fell in love with Bola's story and her movement. After getting my basic finances in order, I started learning about investing through different online platforms & now I finished reading this book. It has all the information needed for a first-time investor starting from basic terms to best practices. I recommend reading the 1st book before starting this one. I am looking forward to Bola's 3rd book coming this summer - "The Side Hustle Guide".
This is a great starting point for anyone who is interested in learning more about the stock market and investing. This book was my introduction to Bola Sokunbi, as I didn't know who she was prior to reading this. After doing some research, I found that there are other books in the Clever Girl Finance series, but they can stand on their own and there is no need to read the others.
This book is very straight forward in the information it provides. There were no unnecessary graphics or graphs. I really appreciated how Sokunbi not only broke down the information into easy-to-understand terms, but also how other resources (such as other books and websites) were provided as well. I like to be able to fully research topics I am interested in, so being able to follow this book up with the recommended reading is right up my alley. I didn't learn anything new per se, but this book definitely solidified my foundational knowledge. Also, the chapter about taxes was very helpful! So many investment books graze over the topic of taxes, but I was impressed with the information she provided and found it useful.
I listened to the audiobook and once I finished, I purchased the eBook so I will be able to reference back to it when needed. I recommend!
I think this is definitely a good read for those who want to get started in investing but don't know how to get started. I did take two finance courses in college, so the material covered in the first 38% was mostly review for me; however, I appreciate the author providing this information, so anyone reading with essentially no background can be on a level playing field. That being said I think the most important portions of the book, covering what investing options there are, how to develop your strategy, etc. come after 38%. I think it's meaningful to expose yourself to this information, since I feel like it is often gate-kept, and as women, we have the potential to make greater financial gains then men if we invest (according to the author). I'm definitely going to take the information from this book to determine my investing strategy prior to starting my full time job, so I can allocate that money at the start, so I won't miss seeing in my paycheck and begin shrinking the time I need to work until I can comfortably retire. I would definitely recommend this book if you're interested in learning more about investing, and I would suggest reading it sooner rather than later to benefit from the effects of compounding early.
This book has all the basics you need to know about investing. This would be a perfect read for someone looking to learn about finance and investing for the first time.
If you already understand compounding interest and know the difference between stocks and bonds, you may be beyond this book. The later chapters do get a bit more complex, exploring index funds, portfolio adjustments, and specific funds to look into further. I’d recommend this for women new to investing, but skip it if you feel like you have a good baseline of understanding.
This book was very informative about the different types of investments, savings and what to do with your money. Easily explained and it gave you tips and tricks.
Concise and covers a variety of topics, ideal for people who don't know anything about investing. I think the whole girls' perspective was unnecessary and didn't add any value to it.
I thought this book was perfect for the "you don't know what you don't know" kinds of things. Reading it, I realized I was missing an understanding of some of the key terms and concepts about investing. It helped fill in that knowledge and give me some tools for how to continue to learn.
Also, I approached this book thinking I was pretty set with my retirement investment strategies (hey, I opted in to my employer's program, what more do I need to do?) and finished realizing that I could actually improve and felt empowered to do the work.
Some women at work have been asking for information regarding intro to investing, so I wanted to read before I pass along.
This book is a great intro book if that’s what you’re looking for. Lots of information to get you comfortable and started, not too overwhelming, but also actionable plans and things to consider.
I’d probably recommend ebook or print book over audio though if you’re really wanting to get started as there’s good information to reference back to. Or you could take your own notes while listening to audio.
An empowering and educational book that will help you see money as a tool to expand your wealth. This book is a good refresher or starting point to learn and revise how to invest and put your money. Investing can be complex and daunting, but this book broke it down in an easy to read way without belittling the reader. It is definitely a book I will come back to, to refresh my financial literacy.
This book was exactly what I needed. It explains the terms and basic principles of investing using clear language without being condescending. Enjoyed reading it and learned a lot.
I enjoyed this book. I enjoyed listening to this but would probably need more than one listen to fully comprehend. I did enjoy learning from this though!
As someone who has never learned much about investing but is ready to start, this book was easy to understand and really helpful in beginning to plan this journey.
I picked up this book because I wanted to become more familiar with investment terminology and begin to create a more aggressive plan for retirement. A fantastic read - a novice will learn so much from what the author outlines in the book.
Key Takeaways: 1. Have a closer look at your financial situation - make paying off debt a priority. Examine your comfort level with risk. Establish an emergency fund if you do not already have one. Ultimately determine what your financial goals are.
2. Investing in index funds may not provide quick returns but will grow your wealth for the long-term. Diversification is key and dependent upon your age. The 100 rule advises to deduct your age from 100 to determine the percentage to invest in stocks and bonds. For example, if you are 30 years old, you would invest 70% in stocks and 30% in bonds to help minimize risk.
3. Research investment funds and keep up with news about the economy, business world and financial markets. Always remain informed even if you do work with a financial advisor.
This was an incredibly quick read that quickly and simply breaks down what you need to know to get started with investing. I wish I had read this book as a teenager when I first started working - definitely recommend this read to anyone who is entering the workforce, or even better, before ever signing up for student loans.
Sokunbi is able to demystify investing, and I particularly enjoyed the interviews at the end of each chapter with notable women who have been able to grow their own wealth. Several of the women speak very candidly about their personal investment strategies, which is really helpful too.
I came away with some tangible strategies and definitely feel more confident about my approach having this additional knowledge. This is a fantastic guide for anyone just getting started, and who might think investing is too complicated to attempt learning about.
