In the late 1980s and early 1990s, McFarlane became a comic book superstar due to his work on Marvel Comics' Spider-Man franchise. In 1992, he helped form Image Comics, pulling the occult anti-hero character Spawn from his high school portfolio and updating him for the 1990s. Spawn was one of America's most popular heroes in the 1990's and encouraged a trend in creator-owned comic book properties.
In recent years, McFarlane has illustrated comic books less often, focusing on entrepreneurial efforts, such as McFarlane Toys and Todd McFarlane Entertainment, a film and animation studio.
In September, 2006, it was announced that McFarlane will be the Art Director of the newly formed 38 Studios, formerly Green Monster Games, founded by Curt Schilling.

Birthday Haul 1 0f 2
I was glad to get this as a gift and read it, although I was a bit disappointed with this one sadly. This trade collects #185-190, which is during the period where Al Simmons is out of the picture and the new guy, Jim Downing takes on the symbiote suit. It was cool to read about this new Spawn as it's a nice change of pace from Al Simmons. The artwork is amazing since instead of having the panels on a traditional white page, this book has it on a black page which helps elevate the dark gritty artwork! It's nice that since this series inception if anything, you could always rely on Spawn to have great artwork!
My big disappointment, however, is that this really is just a setup volume for what the writers had planned at the time. And the big story pay off is only going to happen next volume probably. We get introduced to Jim Downing; Violator is making power plays since Al is gone and some cool Spawn moments are sprinkled throughout but very sparingly. But that's it really, nothing else of merit really came out of it. The next volume collects #191-196, but If your interested in this story I would recommend reading, Spawn: Endgame Collection, which collects the two volumes together and then you can get the complete story and not just setup in this volume. At least the artwork looked good!

Ah.. here. we. go. again.
I may have voted this "it was ok" but in reality, it's not that ok. I'm giving this the benefit of the doubt for the second volume to redeem itself, even though I somehow don't see that happening.
Here's the thing, there's a new Spawn. A completely new guy who's now Spawn. So far good. A change is good, I don't mind it at all. So far, and for the last what, 20-30 or so issues the series really got better. Story-wise and the artwork too.
But, now with the new Spawn, the artwork is still ok and nice, I have no problems with it, but the story, we're back on the shitty stories. Same old shitty crappy boring repetitive stories. Yeap.
The "new" Spawn oh he asks and asks everybody why is this happening to him? What is that thing? Where can he find answers? Why oh why? And then all the usual suspects appear, even fucking Wanda, to help him find "his way" Reminds you of anyone you know? Yeah...
Then ugh.. and that's the most obviously idiotic thing ever, which you can see coming from miles away.. EVERY. SINGLE. VILLAIN. FROM. SIMMON'S. SPAWN. making an appearance issue after issue, like seriously? You were giving us their reappearance with the 1st Spawn every 10 issues or so and now AGAIN? Same SHIT?
And to add insult to injury, if the boring as fuck story wasn't enough, it was full of fucking mistakes, dialogues and grammar and repeating words that make no sense.. meh..
So. No. I wouldn't recommend this. Go read Garfield instead.

"It is nice that McFarlane culminated his craft into this end. The story more mature and gripping than before. With the new turn out of events, I intend to follow the story of Jim Downing / the new Spawn in volumes to come as long as the new team makes the plot more engaging and the art more seriously stunning. Besides, I kinda like the character of Jim over Al."

This isn’t spawn
I purchased this book a few days ago since I finished Spawn: Armageddon, which I recommend, but this book was supposed to explain how Al had been killed. This didn’t do its job. It just explains how there is a new spawn with the suit attached to a character we don’t know or care for. The book didn’t do its job. The only reason it’s 2 stars is for the series continuous amazing art work. Could have been better.

In the typical writing of past Spawn, there's a new Spawn but nothing is explained. This new guy has woken from a coma and things happen very slowly. I'm assuming we may get some answers in volume 2. I really wish David Hine was still writing this. Apparently there's some random retconning again as now angels and devils are back in the picture even though they were supposed to be cut off from this new reality. At least there's some terrific art from the rarely seen Whilce Portacio.

Quick to the action and had great pacing throughout the entire volume. Was a lot more enjoyable compared to hellspawn. The styling was great and I’m really excited to get the second volume.

Muy bueno aunque el arco argumental me gustaría que lo hubieran concluido con más dramatismo e impacto.
