This was worse than a Big Misunderstanding keeping the lovers apart. There was no misunderstanding at all. Jake and Millie talked about their "problem" endlessly. For crying out loud, just do it already!
That was the entire plot through the first 45%: he wants her, she wants him, he tells her he wants her, she tells him she wants him, everyone around them is telling them to get it on and making arrangements for them, but oh, no, we gotta go slow because reasons.
With no external conflict at all, the internal conflict had to carry the whole story and it wasn't enough for this reader.

Edited To Add:
This was the second book in a multi-book series, and I guess you really had to read the first book to make any sense of this one. There's a huge crew of characters who are just there from the opening scene, which is a wedding between two of the characters, with no explanation or introduction. Even Jake and Millie, the main characters Big Hearted Cowboy, aren't given much introduction. It's just assumed you've read Book One and already know who Seth and Zoe and Kate and Henri and Isabel and Teague and Garrett and Serena and CJ and Nick and Leo and Patsy are. And that's not all of them. I couldn't keep track, didn't care, and just gave up.
Apparently Henri is the owner of a ranch, maybe a guest ranch or maybe a working ranch or maybe both, but I don't know. Even after reading 120+ pages, I don't know the actual setting of this book. I think the ranch is in the state of Montana, but even that much isn't made clear. There's a town called Apple Grove and everyone is always drinking cider, but that's about all I know.
The weather is cold, but the month isn't mentioned, nor any relevant holidays, nor the presence or lack of snow.
There's no explanation of this "Buckskin Brotherhood," nor of its (apparent) female counterpart, "The Babes." Is this a formal association of the employees of the ranch? Is it even the Buckskin Ranch? I don't know. What happens if an employee doesn't fit into the group? Is it a requirement?
World-building is usually a term applied to science fiction and/or fantasy, but it applies to real-world fiction, too. The world-building for The Buckskin Brotherhood series is totally lacking in this book, and certainly doesn't make me want to read any further in the series, or even want to go back and read the first book, which I also have.
The worst part, however, is the total lack of any hint of external conflict. There is nothing at all keeping Millie and Jake from having a satisfying relationship other than his insistence that he's not worthy of her or of any woman for that matter (other than casual relationships for the purpose of sex) and therefore any attempt to have a serious relationship with this woman he admits he cares about has to proceed with extreme caution and maximum planning on a very strict timeline, avoiding any kind of spontaneity or indulgence in emotions. Hello? They're adults. It's the twenty-first century with Taylor Swift and some other singers whose names are vaguely familiar to me, and Jake has condoms but deliberately doesn't bring them on his date with Millie because that's not on the timeline! Are you fucking kidding me?
Vickie Lewis Thompson is an established, successful writer. The writing in the book is technically fine. I'm estimating ninety percent of the text is dialogue, with little narrative or description, often page after page of unattributed chitchat on such subjects as why they shouldn't kiss after this dance and why Jake didn't put a condom (or more than one) in his pocket and whether the fact that they've known each other and worked together on the ranch for a couple of years makes a difference in how far they can go on a first date as compared to if they hadn't known each other very long.
First in The Buckskin Brotherhood western romance series and revolving around the Buckskin Ranch. The couple focus is on Lucy Patterson and Matt Ramsey.
My Take I do love these heartwarming stories. Matt's start in life until compassionate people took him in, and Lucy's fall from her hopes.
Those same people have taken in many over the years, helping them, supporting them. And when Lucy arrives after her wedding, she gets that same support in so many thoughtful ways.
It's a dance, of sorts, between Lucy and Matt. She declared her love for him six years ago; he ran. Now they're flirting with ideas and possibilities — dancing away, stepping forward. The challenge is maintaining that friendship without acting on their untold attractions. Ooh là là, the tension!
Thompson uses third person dual protagonist point-of-view from Lucy's and Matt's perspectives, so we get to hear all their fears and desires.
Poor Leo. The girl was only interested in sex. Lol, I do love the brouhaha when Matt gets a "fancy" haircut. The effect it has on the other boys is a crack-up.
I love Matt's ambition. He's more interested in doing what he loves than in working a sure thing. Poor Lucy, is doing the opposite.
Ohh, Orville's comment about each person having a unique gift is so very true. And I wanna cry . . . it's true that feeding your soul is necessary.
Sweet-Talking Cowboy has a moderate pace — mostly because the whiny angst between Lucy and Matt made me nuts. There was too much of that. But this story is definitely a buy for how amazing it is.
It's not so much about action, as it is about exploring the past and how it relates to now.
The Story It's a disaster, and Lucy is so lucky to have made that reservation at the Buckskin Ranch, a place of many happy memories. And the support that Lucy is not expecting.
What would Charley do?
The Characters Lucy Patterson stopped coming to the Buckskin six years ago. Now she works for an L.A. ad agency and hasn't drawn in years. Brianna had been her best friend and roommate. Kurt is the lying jerk.
Matt Ramsey, ahem, Mr I specialize in sperm, has been working at the Buckskin for the past eleven years. Betsy was his old truck. He bought Thunderbolt last year; he's already stood to stud to Penny and Sassafras.
The Buckskin Ranch is . . . . . . a combination of breeding operation and guest ranch. Henrietta "Henri" Fox, a former professor in animal science at Purdue, is the owner. Charley is her deceased husband. Seth is their son who just got married to Zoe. Lucy had sketched a drawing of Charley and Henri on King and Prince, a gelding buck. The divorced Kate is the cook. Millie Jones is helping out with the waitressing. Jake Lassiter cooks for the hands. Other hands include CJ, the movie-star gorgeous Leo, Rafe, and Nick; they consider themselves the Buckskin Brotherhood. The horses include Lucky Ducky, Aristotle is Henri's favorite, Guinevere (Aristotle's dam) is a wonderful brood mare, and Jasmine is a sweet bay. Guests include Don and Suzie Jefferson from Iowa.
You could pick apples at the Apple Grove. I think maybe Apple Grove is the city?Hiram owns the Apple Barrel that sells the apples. Orville hangs out by the stove giving advice. Aspen Grove General is the hospital. Albert is about the only ride-sharing service. Candace Aronson has been a "buddy" with Matt. The Choosy Moose is the local bar and is owned by Ben Malone — he's got a crush on Henri. Gertie's Fountain is a diner with a family tradition; Sarah is the current Gertie's real name. Scamp had been a family kitten. The Denim Junction is a clothing store. Logan's, which sells leather goods and handmade saddles, is run by Jared now. Beth owns the Racy Lace Boutique, and it's just what it sounds like, *hubba, hubba*. John is the local barber. Jerry is the new guy at the auto parts store. He's . . . boring. Merlin is a goof.
The Babes on Buckskins are . . . . . . a group of Henri's friends who love to ride and embrace environmental causes. They include Miss Josette (Pierre is her horse) who co-owns the salon, Très Beau, with Eva; Peggy, who has taken up Lucy's habit of mis-matched socks (she rides Dust Devil); Pam runs a painting crew (and rides Latte); Anastasia "Red" (she rides Caramel); and, the eighty-five-year-old Edna, a.k.a. "Ed", who's a famous barrel rider (Muffin is a sixteen-year-old veteran). Teague is Edna's ranch hand. Ron is Peggy's husband; Lee, a fireman, is Pam's.
That new haircut is having an effect with Candace, Mary Jane, and Shannon.
Zane McGavin, Seth's cousin, founded Raptors Rise in Eagle's Nest (A Cowboy's Strength, The McGavin Brothers 1).
L.A. Jennifer is the person with whom Lucy has an interview. It's also where Lucy has her aha moment.
The Cover and Title The cover has a gorgeous Matt, in his sheepskin jacket and green plaid flannel shirt, tipping his deep brown hat to us. In the background is a V of mountains with Matt centered between them with a dawn sky of pale, pale pink and a deep teal. At Matt's right elbow is Thunderbolt behind a wood fence, churning up the snow into a dust that rises up in front of Matt to his waist. The title starts just above Matt's waist in that same deep teal. The series information is just below it. Below that is the author's name in an embossed-looking gold. Below that is an info blurb in teal.
The title is all about a Sweet-Talking Cowboy who has such compassion.
Likeable characters and an ok story. I feel like they still need to learn to work together. Just because he does the grand gesture doesn’t mean he is over his PTSD about arguing. Again it ended extremely abruptly.
I liked it but I think everything was too planned and talked about needed more natural progression of their relationship I don’t know but just felt quite mechanical
Wrangler Jake Lassiter craves the Buckskin Ranch’s spunky housekeeper, Millie Jones, but telling her is out of the question. She’s the kind of gal who deserves a happily-ever-after. He’s not the kind of guy who can give her one. Or is he, can she show him? I was looking for a book that'd give me cozy, comfy heartwarming vibes with less smut as a bit of a palette cleanser and this book did exactly that. I loved The Brotherhood cowboys how they cared and respected each other. It's not just a romantic book but a book about close friendships, deep loyalty, hope and joy. The author spellbinds you with Jake and Millie who are adorable together and so cute, honestly the perfect romance. I've read the first in the series and will go ahead and read the rest. If you love Hallmark vibes this is your book for sure. The depth of emotions the issues that face Jake are real life and how these two navigate them, shows the empathy the author has Please read this book because it'll fill you with happy, cozy feelings Kerry Kennedy Author
I really loved Jake in the previous book, Sweet-Talking Cowboy. He and Millie had lovely chemistry, but nothing had happened between them yet. I knew that there was a great story coming with this one. I won't say a lot about the plot because I don't want to spoil anything. I will say that Millie is a sweetheart who spreads cheerfulness wherever she goes. Jake cannot help but be drawn to her. She has a clear picture of how a healthy relationship should look, and she sticks to her guns when necessary. Jake, bless his heart, has no idea how a healthy relationship should work, and he pretty much sabotages himself. Because we can hear what he is thinking, though, it is easy to feel for him, and i was definitely pulling for him to wake up. He has the sense to go to his brothers for help, and they get him straight. The end is very romantic. A great read!
Jake and Millie have been flirting for the past two years but it is only at the wedding of their friend Matt, that Millie realises that their relationship has no future because Jake has no wish to marry and have a family. However when Millie decides to give her attention to another cowboy, Jake is jealous and his fellow brothers persuade him to give a proper relationship a go. After two years of attraction, going out as a couple quickly escalates both of their feelings but Jake’s childhood and his fear that he will repeat the mistakes of his parents is a huge stumbling block. An enjoyable story, with a great family vibe from the Brotherhood, Henri and the Babes. Plus we get to meet up again with Seth and Zoe, and Matt and Lucy. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I have really enjoyed this series and I enjoyed reading about Millie and Jake's story in this book. Jake is such a sexy cowboy, trying not to have a relationship like his parents, who fought all the time. He was so afraid he would be just like his dad if he dated Millie and fell in love with her.
Millie was quite the romantic person in the story and so in love with Jake. I really liked how she wanted to be more a part of Jake's life and not have him do everything by himself. I also liked how Jake proved to Millie that he truly loved her. It made for a great ending. I also enjoyed The Buckskin Brotherhood with its sexy, strong, caring cowboys. I received an advance copy of this book and I willingly chose to write an honest review.
I love this trope. Very realistic example of best friends figuring out if they can be more and the different expectations between just being friendly versus being in a relationship. They are both very independent aka little stubborn so this is challenging. I was eager for them because I think being friends builds a solid foundation, they have great chemistry but it's never easy working through the sensitive stuff. I think he's a great cowboy, very respectful and has a lot to offer, I like her too and understand the principles of what was bothering her, I would never complain about a man doing the things he did without even being asked.:) Delightful romance with heartfelt emotion, enjoyed this. I received an advance review copy without obligation and am voluntarily reviewing.
This book was a perfect break from the world of the Pandemic!
Despite mentioning a bit of a triggering situation, Thompson manages to keep this story light and lovely.
That being said, unfortunately, this wasn't one of my favourite Thompson reads. Perhaps I've been too stressed, perhaps the book didn't manage to take to the same place of romance, escape, and cowboy fantasy. The story is great, but it just didn't feel like the best of the best. Though the hero jumps through hoops of fire, some of Thompson's normal swoon worthy charm was missing.
Unlike some of Thompson's others books, this book would be best enjoyed as part of the series and not as a stand alone.
OMG. There is no misunderstanding to drag throughout this book, there is the knowing of what the problem is. Parental childhood trauma. Jake’s parents should be shot for being so selfishly self-centered. But to make his childhood memories be a major problem for the whole book, just ridiculous. I kept reading, expecting something to happen. Nothing did. A whole lot of nothing. If it wasn’t for the other characters being involved, I’d have stopped reading. I don’t believe Jake can just change as he claims without professional help. The brotherhood may be supportive but they won be living with them. Felt sorry for Teague.
Jake and Millie set out to see if they have what it takes to move off the path of friends on to the road of being lovers. Heavy emotional baggage and the fear of losing the relationship they already have make the road bump but the journey is worth it!
Vicki Lewis Thompson knows how to write a story with conflict and make sure resolve is earned with no character compromise. Her characters seem to be wonderful but flaw people that you just want to find love and happiness. Her series are always a joy to read
Sometimes, the hero in a romance novel is so frustrating; I spent the majority of my reading time wanting to shake some sense into Jake to let him know he doesn't have to follow in his parents footsteps. Luckily, he has some really nice qualities so, I felt okay wishing for he and Millie to stay together. Jake and Millie have a rough path to follow to their happy ending, but they sure have some steamy fun along the way.
Super sweet with a little heat! Jake is determined to not follow in his parents footsteps, so basically he doesn't want to even try. The Brotherhood steps in to be his sounding board. Millie is light hearted and is sick of dancing on the other side of the relationship line. She wants Jake and is determined to make him realize that he won't be like his parents. The Lone Ranger finally jumps through the flaming hoops!
Big-Hearted Cowboy (The Buckskin Brotherhood, #2)by Vicki Lewis Thompson Second book in the series. Jake Lassiter craves the Buckskin Ranch’s housekeeper, Millie Jones, but he can't tell her... She a happily-ever-after. He’s not the kind of guy who can give her one. Then another cowboy sets his sights on Millie and all bets are off. full of friendship, love, laughs and some steam... can't wait for the next book.
Amazing addition to an already great series. Easy to read with characters that feel so down home. The ending, though, stole the show. I normally am a bit forlorn at the end of a good book, knowing there’s no more to read, but this ending was so epically fitting, I was okay with it. Book gifted to me.
Vicki Lewis Thompson wrote another winner in this Buckskin Brotherhood series. Jake is the sweet loveable cowboy featured in this story who has been in love with Millie for the past two years. Can he overcome the past and his fears about being like his father to have a future with Millie? Another Buckskin Brotherhood to the rescue. Loved it!
I've enjoyed the stories of The Buckskin Brotherhood so much! I like the way several of the inhabitants of the ranch are mentioned in each book so I can keep up with their lives while getting involved with another couple. Fun read with some serious social issues thrown in. Great plotting and editing. Vicki Lewis Thompson knows how to write a compelling story.
Millie and Jake—she’s an important part of housekeeping and he’s a ranch hand/cook for the Buckskin Ranch. They’ve always been attracted to each other, but he’s never acted on it because of his background. He has to convince himself that he’s not verbally abusive like his father is. Eventually, though, they find their HEA.
I really like the covers that this author has on the book. The story is one that when you start you will want to get back to it right away as it is so enjoyable. Vicki hit the ball over the second basemans head for a sliding in triple!
ABSOLUTELY GREAT series LOVE Vicki Lewis Thompson. Great series.like her others. Love the continuation of her series books. GLAD to read 'll her books can't wait till next one. Thanks for your SHARING this with all. MARY VANDER HEYDT
Millie keeps the cabins at the Buckskin Ranch clean and tidy. Jake feeds the cowboys and helps run the ranch. They've had a thing for each other for quite some time. So they finally decide to do something about it.
Loving this Series Miss Vicki Lewis Thompson!! I can't wait to read the rest! These cowboys are gorgeous, smart, and kind gentlemen! And oh so Sexy! Where can I find one??
I enjoy all the characters in this series, the friendship bond that sealed their brotherhood when they didn’t have stable beginnings. Is fun to visualize and the story brings it to life.
Another delightful book from Vicki Lewis Thompson! The second in the series with two delightful characters. Story is full love and presented with humor and a touch of steam.
