Spooky reverse harem that bends the tropes...

Weird. Creepy. Frumpy. Boyish. At the young age of twenty-nine, reluctant necromancer Esper Jones is an outcast, labeled “the old witch on the hill” and avoided by all sane residents of the tiny village of Hellsfork Michigan. And that’s just fine with her. Dealing with people has all the appeal of poking her own eyes out.

But Esper’s quiet world is upset when a strange, beautiful man named Toma blows into town and destroys the walls Esper has carefully built around herself. Esper has never met another supernatural before, and she finds herself oddly drawn to the pretty medium who claims he can speak to ghosts.

Drawn into the medium’s crazy enthusiasm for rescuing people who are already dead, Esper finds herself traipsing through cemeteries and using the curse she has always hated to wake the dead and ask for answers. Because the ghosts of Hellsfork are restless, and only Esper and Toma can help put them to rest.

Sometimes our greatest strengths come from our deepest challenges. I write magic and romance, starring a cast of creatures with feathers, fins, and teeth. My books include paranormal romance, urban fantasy, and fantasy romance--with the occasional steampunk or alien story thrown in just for kicks. My pan heart firmly believes love is love, so you'll see straight, LGBTQIA, monogamous, reverse harem, and poly relationships in my work. My favorite theme is overcoming our inner demons and the insecurities that hold us back.
I also advocate for self-development and mental health and dabble in non-fiction as time allows. I love the outdoors and still hope to be abducted by fae! (I may have more in common with my characters than I care to admit.)

Necromancer meets ghost whisperer!

Ghostromance by Kate Draper is a a great book with the main gal being a necromancer who meets a medium who is hot! They really become friends and work together to solve a ghost mystery while two groups of thugs are after them. One group is after the guy and the other group is after the girl. Interesting and enjoyable read!

What caught my eye about this one was how the author described it as not your typical Reverse Harem read. That's definitely true and it's probably my favorite part of the book. While still following some of the common tropes in the urban fantasy, paranormal romance and reverse harem genres, this book was quite unique as well as it differed in a lot of ways too.

Ghostromance follows the story of Esper. Esper basically fits the old witch on the hill image, except she's not that old yet, she's in her late twenties. She is a necromancer, but knows very little about her powers, she just mostly tries not to use them. She doesn't like interacting with peoples and stays at home when she can. She also is absolutely hideous if we can believe her own opinion, which was refreshing at first as she wasn't beautiful and looked quite boy-ish, but after a while I admit I got a bit annoyed with how often she made comments about her not looking nice or her clothes being ugly. It just was a bit too much in my opinion.

While I liked the introduction, after that I felt like I was just waiting to see where the story goes and while it is well paced, it still felt like not much happens. That also might be because of the short length of this book, it's a novella and that made it hard to really get into the story. This might improve with book 2, but not sure if I'll continue the series.

I have been in this weird reading mood and it feels like the books I pick up are just all missing something. That something more that can turn it into a great read. I am not quite sure what causes it. In the case of this book I think it's just that the story never fully gripped me. It was fun enough, but had nothing that pulled me in deeper, made me really care about these characters or invested in their stories.

Having said that I did enjoy reading about Esper and Toma, I had expected their romance to develop quite quickly, but I was pleasantly surprised that there was a bit of build-up before things turned steamy. I did like Esper and Toma for the most part. Both were interesting characters and I like how they are both a bit different.

Who I didn't like was Jazz. I am usually not a fan of the extrovert best friend who tries to get the introvert main character to be normal/ outgoing etc. And that's exactly the type of character she was, it felt like she totally lacked any sort of understanding or compassion when it came to Esper and just wanted to change her to be normal. She is even downright rude multiple times. I think she might be important later on to some storyline as there are some hints that Toma drops that something's up with her, but for now I just found her annoying and I honestly couldn't fathom why she and Esper were still friends. It didn't even seem like Esper liked her, it was more that Jazz stuck with her for so long she just stayed friends or something. It just didn't work for me and it wasn't interesting and I cringed every time Jazz showed up.

Compared to jazz, I found Toma's acceptance of Esper's weirdness refreshing and nice to read about. He liked her how she was and didn't want her to change. I especially liked the comment when he sees her in a skirt and remarks he rather sees her in her usual clothes as she looks uncomfortable. I liked Toma, he was interesting and fun to read about. I also liked the romance so far, there was a bit of build up and mutual acceptance and they just seemed great together.

The paranormal aspect was interesting, while this book really only touches upon what exists in this world it worked well as introduction. It mostly focuses on Esper's paranormal type namely necromancer and Toma who is a medium and can speak to ghosts. There also is a bit of a storyline related to the ghosts that I think will continue in future books. Toma explains there are multiple types of paranormals, but we don't see much of the other types yet only hear Toma talk about them a bit. All in all the world building was well done for such a short read and I am sure it will be developed more in future books.

To summarize: Ghostromance caught my attention with the author's note stating that this book is different from most reverse harem books. I liked how it was a bit different from most reverse harem reads. Esper is not your usual main character and I liked how she was a bit weird and while it was refreshing she wasn't beautiful, I did think she thought or remarked about her lack of looks a bit too much. I liked her developing romance with Toma, he seemed like a nice guy and accepted her like she was. There is a bit of build-up before things turn steamy, but it's limited to only one scene. I liked the two of them together. For some reason this book didn't fully grip me, there was enough happening, but it just didn't fully pull me into the story and get me invested in what would happen next. I really disliked Jazz's character, she was annoying, didn't respect Esper and even downright rude a few times. The paranormal aspect and world building was interesting enough, there isn't as much we see of the world in this book as it's pretty short and the focus mostly is on the necromancer and ghost talking abilities. All in all a decent start of this new series, it's a unique reverse harem read, but it didn't fully grip me.

YES! OMG, YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! DON’T STOP!

This is EXACTLY what I’ve been looking for in “reverse harem” and “polyamory” speculative fiction! The main character and her first lover don’t conform to gender norms! She’s tall, gangly, and masculine-ish and he’s short, petite, and feminine-ish!

And what I love about this story is that two uber hot conventionally attractive lovers are totally into her! One is like an Adonis sex god and the other could easily pass as Aphrodite herself! And they are both irresistibly attracted to her! As alphas, they practically fight over who gets to have her - the awkward, clumsy, and sometimes curmudgeonly main character! Swoon!

I oh so relate to the main character’s shock that such beautiful beings are attracted to her! As a queer femme, I’d always be a bit confused when conventionally gorgeous people would hit on me. As in, looks around the room awkwardly and then points at self, “Were you talking to me?! Oh! Thank you!” Then proceeds to eye beautiful person suspiciously wondering why they seem to be into me of all people when clearly they could be with any gorgeous person they want!?

I also love her transition from a place of insecurity to one of more confidence in herself and her relationships. We’ve all been there, right? If you’re more in the mood for a strong and confident femme main character, maybe give some of the author’s other series a try?

Lastly, and most importantly, I LOVE that she’s the focal point and the spoke of the polycule! Because admittedly I like my main character to be at the center of the majority of the sexy times.😉 But I am also happy that she, later on, has the confidence to not always be the center of everyone’s attentions. However, she’s still the roots and the foundation of the polycule family! Double swoon!

If you want your “reverse harem” to be truly queer, the prose to be well written, with a great balance between action, adventure, thrills, and humor - this author and this series is for you! I am overjoyed that I came across it!

Ever felt like your usual urban fantasy heroine wasn't rude enough? Well fear not, because this oddball necromancer has her snarkray set from stun to slay. Expect swearing, sex and secret pasts in what reads like a fast-n-furious pilot episode or a paranormal romance/cozy mystery.

Meet Esper, your less than average necromancer protagonist. She's 29, single, dresses funny and hates pretty much everybody. That is until one day she meets a pretty boy, nearly gets killed by the shadowy folks who've been stalking her, reanimates her first human corpse and discovers that spirits really don't like seeing their bodies walking around without them. Oh, and there's some BSGD situation with ghosts that the pretty boy with the purple eyes might just be getting involved with.

Personally, I found Esper's attitude way too caustic for my liking. She's really horrible and swears like a trooper - not something I'd usually criticise, but it just seemed like too much. She has one friend, but from their interactions I had no idea why they were still in touch, let alone hanging out together. Not even a nod to the idea that they like verbally sparring or anything. I liked that she wasn't supposed to be this stereotypical urban fantasy butt-kicking beauty, but she did rather go on about it.

Ol' Purple Eyes was an interesting character, portraying gender-fluidity in his own quirky way, but his sudden latching on to Esper seemed too deep too fast. It didn't feel like their relationship had any time to develop, just happened because it had to (because there needed to be a fairly graphic sex scene?) I could see these characters getting together, bonding over their mirrored particularities and brutal pasts, but this episode rushed it. Presumably the reverse harem stuff comes in later instalments. The cosy mystery aspect was clever, but entered late and was over pretty quickly too.

All in all not bad if you're looking for a fast paranormal romance mystery, but maybe too acidic to be my cup of tea.

Note: Should binge read (if you have the patience and time).

This first installment is introductory and the pacing is slow. Read very well the description about the poly aspects.

One thing must me noted: The cover of this series has been seriously white washed and is extremely inaccurate. Our FMC was described as having- “Red hair, yellowish olive skin that turned brown in the sun. Weird yellow-brown eyes.”

In regards to the story, we were introduced to three characters: FMC, her frenemy, and the first love interest (Toma, the medium).

Our FMC was a grumpy and very insecure 29y.o. woman, with the (figuratively) soul of an old bitter man, that spent her days hating/avoiding most social interactions. Because of her (very) dysfunctional family and supernatural circumstances, she became a recluse and didn’t know much about her “supernatural” situation. We only got to know more through Toma. While watching some other interactions that didn’t make much sense with her frenemy.

Other than that, the story didn’t deliver much. The instant acceptance of their attraction and the weird “not so believable” reactions to some extreme situations, starting form the very first chapter, made the story a little bit lacking.

Basically, there was not much of a plot (this might stay the same in the future). And, sometimes, it fell into some old tropes that we know are just not IT anymore (like the self deprecating tomboy and make up hating FMC, or the silly and shallow best frenemy).

However, our FMC’s character could’ve been more or less justified because of her situation. At times overbearing and dull, it was easier to ignore since it became such different setting than most RH.

This book was awesome!
It starts with a bang, with Esper walking a re-animated dog for the best reasons, and you get a strong sense of her character, loneliness, and power right from the start.
We meet Esper’s bestie, Jazz, and learn about Esper’s horticulture and gardening talents, her “old lady spooky witch” vibe and old Victorian house, as well as her financial independence with her garden products and writing. Esper is a tall and less-curvy woman, who doesn’t feel feminine or beautiful and (while we know that all women and all people are valid!) when we meet her, she’s feeling self-conscious about a lot in herself and her life.
Enter Toma, a medium (like ghost medium, not small-medium-large), with feminine grace and masculine strength, who doesn’t care about gender, has great self-confidence and care in their appearance, who immediately connects with Esper. Their friendship and relationship develops so well!
Together, the two realize something shady is afoot in the town and they jin forces for good!

This book did read like a novella / serial series starter (which, it is a series starter!) so it went fast for me and I loved it! A wonderful introduction to this world. I read all 6 and LOVED them!! Serious book hangover though, beware, nothing else will compare after this!

Heather's Notes
I am not sure about this book. Esper got a bit annoying when she went on and on about being a "freak". I did like Toma and Esper together. I also didn't like the end, which while the author says it is not a cliffhanger. Is a cliffhanger. I will have to think about it.

Cute

This story is cute.. easy to understand and read. The relationship develops nicely and we get a good background on the two main characters. The FMC, 1 guy (so far i’m guessing) and a [lame] best friend. Only three notable characters total in this book.

FMC is recluse, doesn’t like to talk to people or being around people. Most likely because of her past of being bullied and seen as a freak. Mother is a alcoholic with 5(?) kids (FMC is in the middle). Kids are neglected and victimized by a string of men the mother brings home. FMC moved out but occasionally returns to make sure little siblings are safe enough.

FMC meets a guy who is strange and supernatural like her. She had never met a supernatural before and he grew up in the supernatural world. Story is cute between them.

The book lost a star for lack of world building. We learn very little about the supernatural world.

I’m not sure if I am going to read the next one or not.

I was quite disappointed in this one. It’s not your typical RH they say, I guess,… I mean this book is only about the two people. That’s not why I was disappointed though. The author constantly describing the FMC bad looks, her not feminine/small chest, large butt and hips/bad hair/mutt ethnicities,… ugh, it was shoved down our throats every two pages it seemed. I mean, I get it,.. she not your typical beauty but come on!! It got old. Making the female more masculine and the male more androgynous/feminine is fine; but always reminding us you’re writing your characters this way isn’t bold and progressive… it’s annoying.
I wanted to like this book, I wanted a good poly series and I guess the fact it was more annoying then good makes me a bit harsh. Anywho, definitely not for me, I won’t be continuing with the series.
Gave it two stars cause the writing was good, minimal errors and good writing style. Also has potential, too bad it fell flat.

Okay, so … this would probably be five stars if it were combined with the other books, or at the very least a box set, but unfortunately it’s not. They’re published as novella sized bites and despite being labeled and advertised in the blurb as a unique reverse harem series, this first “book” only has one M/F budding relationship and it feels very… incomplete (and not just in a slow burn way). It ends on a cliffy, not a horrible one but with a million unanswered questions.

I REALLY liked the characters though and I love the concept, I love Esper & her soft spots despite a hardened exterior due to mistreatment, and I love that Toma is this ethereal genderfluid person completely liberated both sexually and gender expression wise. I will definitely read/listen to the next one, it’s just an odd publishing choice that I know others may not tolerate.

***SPOILERS***

Esper is a necromancer from a bad home. She is now almost 30 years old living on her own. She doesn't have many friends and the town thinks she is a weirdo. She meets Toma, a ghost whisperer, from a high-society family. They both have people after them for their powers and they begin a romantic relationship. At the end, a vampire finds out about her and we get the sense we're going to meet him soon.

This book was a quick, easy, and enjoyable read for everything but the romance. The author really stressed (at every chance she got and then some) the masculinity of the female main character and the femininity of the male main character. It made the intimate scenes feel awkward for me. I won't be reading book two.

I've come to adore Kaye Draper for a lot of reasons, but the main one? She discards tropes, stomps on them, sets them on fire and laughs manically while she does so.... or so it seems. I have yet to encounter a written work of hers that follows the so called 'rules', and I love it that way.

Ghostromance is no different, though the trope destroying sledgehammer isn't quite as apparent here as it is in her other works, like the Not Quite series. Here, we have Esper, an incredibly unpopular and insecure almost thirty year old gal who just happens to harbor a powerful Necromancer gift. Good times, right? Well, those times really DO become good when a purple eyed stranger smashes into her life, bringing with him a wealth of supernatural knowledge, a touch of danger, plenty of lust - and a sense of fashion that wings his eyeliner perfectly.

Like most of her writings, this is a Novella, but the action that happens and the connections that are forged make the narrative feel longer than the paltry 98 pages we are gifted. In other words, it's fantastic.

Romantic Dynamic:
~ This book? M/F - but this is a slow build Reverse Harem, so who knows where we are going?

I didn't like Esper as much as I liked Gesa. She was unsure of herself and I expected her to grow and develop more than she did throughout the series. First five books were filled with deprecating comments about herself and finally in the last one there was SOME progress. It also drove me nuts she didn't want to develop her powers and in many situations didn't do anything when they were being attacked. 😩 I also feel that this series is less developed that Gesas. Interesting since its a gender bending menagerie but because I read those two series back to back I'm making comparisons and this one I find less... everything that gryphons.🤷🏻‍♀️

Not your "normal" heroes

I read a lot of PNR but so many of them still stick with typical MC. This was a refreshing new take. I'm looking forward to seeing more of Esper and Toma. Normally I tend to be one of the readers that a more mainstream male character appeals to but I'm really loving Toma's depth and I can see the attraction to him. His strength and belief in himself and also in Esper shines through.

2.5 stars out of 5

I'm not sure of I like this series. Esper is way too negative about everything. She only has one friend but I'm not sure why they even are friends, they just seem to dislike each other.
"I rolled my eyes. She was such a ditz. Powers knew why I insisted on keeping her around."

I'm also not particularly a fan of the fact that the heroine collects her lovers throughout the series.

Very interesting read and great start to the series

I love the characters and how left of normal they are. It’s so refreshing to read a real person, as opposed to the so perfect they can’t be human cookie cutter clones that make up most FMC in this genre. Looking forward to seeing how the series develops

Enjoyed

Ok so I put off this series Because I was obviously crazy. It’s such a great read and I love the characters. “The freaks”. There perfect for each other and he’s so understanding and I feel for her. The self hate and all she feels is powerful. It was an amazing read. Now I’m on to the next book.

Strange but Interesting

This is an unusual story but interesting. Esper is strange but very negative toward herself. I hated how terribly she thought about herself. I hope she starts thinking better about herself in the next book especially now that she has a beautiful boyfriend in her life.

I absolutely adore these characters

The two characters, Esper and Toma are unique, quirky and really fabulously entertaining. The storyline is just weird enough to be enjoyable and the whole book made me smile. I am definitely going to be reading more of this series.

I can understand why Esper is isolated from the rest of the town. Raising dead people is a creepy ability but it's also really cool. She is a bit ashamed of her power but I like that Toma starts to get her out of her shell. She is so cute with him. Like a deer in the headlights kind of cute.

Just ok

This was ok. There were some unique elements, but overall the story was just ok. It lacked both world building and character chemistry in my opinion. I did enjoy the narration and was surprised to see that kaye draper was both author and narrator.

Unlikable character with low self-esteem and rude. In addition, I do not get insta-lust. Don't plan to continue since I realize this sis supposed to be reverse harem and I don't get that either. Onto my next adventure, Happy Readings!!!
