Made my way through this one. I liked the latter half a bit more than the first half. Basically, once they started introducing the agricultural and hygiene science, it was a bit more interesting for me. Ash's plans for his uncle Sir Baleas George or whoever's supplies check issue were more mundane and the whole thing with coaxing Reina and her mom with sweets was kinda meh.

I didn't really feel Arthur's character yet. I just feel like their arc is a bit rushed so far (they and Ash hit it off over a very lame joke about the eccentricities of Father Folke iirc, which is the first of Ash's bad jokes that somehow are supposed to be hilarious). There's still too much to learn about their history, I feel like they could have been a little more enlightening there.

Did Ash tell an "R" joke with the prisoner when he was washing his back? That was kind of weird. Also, these guys getting paid for this work, or does Ash accept slave labor if it helps him (giving them the first harvest to eat doesn't seem like fair compensation for all the literal crud they put up with handling his manure fertilizer; I suppose he at least was willing to die for them though...).

Benefit and a curse with these "acquisition of talent to build an empire" series like Realist Hero. Sometimes the cast gets too big too quickly, and sometimes the characters don't get the focus they deserve. Sometimes the drama is a bit forced and sped up.

Ultimately leave on a good note with Maika preparing to accept a leadership role if it'll help Ash. It's just kind of crazy that the title is about starting with a village, but now we're already looking at Ash becoming a major player in a large city (enough so that he could start wars over his soap business encroaching on the rich nobles' territory; which again reminds me of Economics of Prophecy).

I continue to appreciate the series.. I appreciate how the main character is advancing civilization in a steady manner... as well as using old books that they translate to get some of the gaps in information filled.
Would the standard reader, if thrown to this world, know how to make soap? What steps are necessary to make chemical fertilizer? I also appreciate the commentary on why some things can -not- be done now, as while they may have the knowledge, they do not have the intermediate steps set up in order to get the technology that they are reaching for.

As good as the 1st

I loved this story and I am looking forward to volume 3. This stories adventure begins in the nearby city where Ash gets to put his weirdness... I'mean genius on full display. He will get to cook and enjoy food, research and try new ideas, experiment and make new laborers... I mean friends and fight demons. Most importantly he becomes one step closer to achieving his dreams.

It's pretty entertaining reading how Ash keeps trying to "modernize" the world he currently lives in. I'm actually pretty interested to see how far he can go to change things up. The world building is always something really interesting to me as a reader.

His thoughtlessness got very old, very quickly. I only made it a few chapters in.

Making soap is a large part of this novel (one of 4 chapters), and while I'm not an expert on soap-making, the complexity involved is too high for the first basics, and that unnecessary steps and ingredients are added--and then once the soap making is completed, it's abandoned instead of being refined.

Soap making does not require high heat such as from a forge. Eggshells are not a required component of soap: there's easier ways to get lye, such as using ashes...all it takes is pouring water through a barrel of wood ash.

While modern soaps are hard to make without modern tools, once you have the basics down it should be quite simple to make something far better. Beeswax can be added to make it harder. While I don't know all the effects, I do know that common functional additives for modern soaps include salt, sugar, honey, clay, orange/citrus oil, and milk; making a basic detergent only requires adding baking soda and borax, both natrually occurring. None of this requires high heat or fancy tools, just adding the aforementioned substances directly to the soap.

It's mentioned that a certain family has a monopoly on soapmaking. "Given the current state of affairs, there was no one besides the Royches who made soap. It was the source of their huge profits, which gave them great political influence. I question why they use their monopoly to sell only to the royal family. "More than half of the articles in circulation are reserved for the royal family". While expensive luxuries made of scarce materials can be more profitable when sold at a high price, this is a process that can be industrialized, even with the low technology given in the novel. This is not a product affected by scarcity, and selling a lower quality product to commoners would make them far more money than selling exclusively to a single family. This makes as much economic sense as giving the pope a monopoly on buying cheese. Worse yet, the royal family has no reason to prevent the nobility or commoners from purchasing soap; quite the opposite, it would be better for the country as a whole if more soap was made, as it translates to fewer deaths, and thus more tax money.

If you wanted to pick a product that MC could make that already has a known function and is monopolized, it would be better to pick a luxury (the games that were mentioned in a side story), a product that could be used by everyone (the recipes that are occasionally mentioned), or an improvement on current materials.
Luxuries: Bedsprings would probably be a good one; these require advanced knowledge, but not advanced tools.
Materials: It's mentioned that the walls had several crooked parts, which I assumed to be hastily-executed emergency repairs after battle damage; cement is a simple product to make (limestone, ash, water), and once you have cement, concrete is also available. The Bessemer process basically involves blowing air through molten iron to remove impurities.

Spoiler warning.

Unfortunately, it becomes extremely cliché. His roommate turns out to be a girl in disguise who is also the princess of the country. It ends as a true harem novel with two wives.
Maika's character development gets completely ruined. She turns for a 'love is war' 'how dare you touch my man' hurricane to, 'maybe it's fine to share our love with that pityful princess who has never been loved before'.
Honestly, it was a letdown.
Her antics were one of the best points in this story. But yeah, just like all jp webnovels with extremely cliche developments, this one ended the same way.
With multiple wives. Some people might love it, I hated it.
I mean really? A princess for a roommate?

The development of new technology proceeds, this time in regards to agriculture and soap. All the while studying at a military academy and while gathering allies and making new friends. We also get to see the first "demons" and a hint of political intrigue.

Like part 1 it was an entertaining read for its technological development, the slow world building (the use of a fallen civilization is new and intriguing) and to an extent character development. The MC does not pose much opposition/drama though, and some of the anime tropes in regards to characters are there (dense protagonist for example). It is also very much a slice of life story with slow pacing and few tense moments which I like but is not for everybody.

All in all, an entertaining read with an intriguing plot.
