The photographer Josh Lehrer's up-close-and-personal document of the evolution, and revolution, that is Hamilton: An American Musical.
Only the second official book, Hamilton: Portraits of the Revolution invites Hamilfans to experience the award-winning show in a brand-new and intimate way through more than 100 portraits of the cast, including Lin-Manuel Miranda (Alexander Hamilton), Leslie Odom Jr. (Aaron Burr), Daveed Diggs (Lafayette), Phillipa Soo (Eliza Schuyler Hamilton), and Rene Elise Goldsberry (Angelica Schuyler), along with personal commentary by the cast about Hamilton, their experiences, and the show's impact on them and the world. It includes contributions by creator Lin-Manuel Miranda and director Thomas Kail, as well as a curated collection of ephemera and original writings from the historical figures who served as the inspiration for their stage characters.
With book, music, and lyrics by Miranda, direction by Thomas Kail, and choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler, Hamilton is the story of an immigrant who became George Washington's right-hand man and the new nation's first treasury secretary.
From "Broadway Babies" to history buffs to anyone who appreciates photography, this is the perfect book for the millions who have been moved by, and want to reexperience, the extraordinary theatrical and musical experience.
Stunning portraits of member of Hamilton casts from Broadway, Chicago, London, and touring, taking with a historical lens, almost exclusively in black-and-white. Occasional notes from the photographer. This book is not to inform you about the production or it's history -- there are other titles for that -- but to show you many (though not all of the) faces who have played each role as well as painstaking details on the costumes that may not show up on stage or screen.
This is a coffee table book of photographs, some in color, of individuals involved in various productions of the musical phenomenon 'Hamilton': the off-Broadway and Broadway productions, as well as the touring company and those in Chicago and London. The photographs themselves are stunning...sure to be appreciated by anyone who enjoys fine photographic portraiture. For those who have seen (and/or heard) and loved the musical however, this big valentine of a book will deepen one's appreciation for the level of detail and commitment seen in the show. Kudos all around!
no ✩ bc there’s not really much to read, it’s mostly pictures. ~ “There is a cumulative value in finding stillness while the world turns upside down.” ~ as a theater kid, history nerd, & amateur photographer i LOVED this! 😭❤️ ~ the pictures were beautiful & so were the stories behind them. ~ i will definitely be coming back to look at the pictures again bc they are so captivating! or at least until i’ve to return the book back to library. GIFT idea??
I thought these photos were completely stunning. I love how Josh Lehrer captured all the different cast members from the different Hamilton productions. He is such a talented photographer and I think he captured the magic of the true meaning of the musical Hamilton.
These photos see through you. The back to back placement of Jasmine Cephas Jones and Anthony Ramos- my heart screamed (in a good way)!
The phrase “I am my ancestors’ wildest dreams” kept popping in my head while reading this. You can feel the array of emotion from each portrait and a sense of gravity fills the air.
Maybe I’m biased being a Hamilton fan, but the fact that the photographer used a lens that shared a time period with Eliza Hamilton adds so much more to this.
Gorgeous photos. Super fun to see photos of the actors I saw perform the show live. Able to see so many details on the costumes. Fun addition to reading about the development of the musical and seeing it in person.
Stunning photographs of the Broadway, London, Chicago and touring casts of Hamilton, shot by Josh Lehrer with a portrait lens from 1840. Every picture tells a story.
Hamilton: Portraits of the Revolution - Josh Lehrer
📖 This book is filled with stunning portraits of over 100 Hamilton cast members. There are the known favorites like Lin-Manuel Miranda, Leslie Odom Jr., Phillipa Soo, and Renee Elise Goldsberry along with many other gorgeous shots from photographer Josh Lehrer. He used an old camera that required the cast member to stand very still while on his screen he could see the shot upside down and backwards. These images are a new look at our favorite on stage characters.
📚 My family and I are huge Hamilton fans, so looking at these portraits was a fun way to connect and talk about our favorite play. Seeing the different characters and the creativity behind the pictures was an enjoyable experience for our family.
🌟 If you’re a fan of Hamilton then you should order this book from your local library or Amazon - the photos are captivating and worth your time. I’ve included a few of my favorites from the Disney+, original cast.
The portraits are fabulous. However, the small amount of text in my copy had some glaring errors of grammar and copy editing that should never have made it to print.
