Judy Moody Was in a Mood

Rate this book
"Judy Moody was in a mood. Not a good mood. A bad mood. A mad-faced mood."To start, Judy Moody doesn't have high hopes for third grade. Her new desk won't have an armadillo sticker with her name on it. Her new classroom will not have a porcupine named Roger. And with her luck, she'll get stuck sitting in the first row, where Mr. Todd will notice every time she tries to pass a note to her best friend, Rocky. An aspiring doctor, Judy does have a little brother who comes in handy for practicing medicine, a cool new pet, and a huge Band-Aid collection. Judy also has an abundance of individuality and attitude, and when Mr. Todd assigns a very special class project, she really gets a chance to express herself! Megan McDonald's spirited text and Peter Reynolds's wry illustrations combine in a feisty, funny first chapter book for every kid who has ever felt a little out of sorts.

"Sometimes I think I am Judy Moody," says Megan McDonald, author of the Judy Moody series, the Stink series, and THE SISTERS CLUB. "I'm certainly moody, like she is. Judy has a strong voice and always speaks up for herself. I like that."

For Megan McDonald, being able to speak up for herself wasn't always easy. She grew up as the youngest of five sisters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her father, an ironworker, was known to his coworkers as "Little Johnny the Storyteller." Every evening at dinner the McDonalds would gather to talk and tell stories, but Megan McDonald was barely able to get a word in edgewise. "I'm told I began to stutter," she says, leading her mother to give her a notebook so she could start "writing things down."

Critically acclaimed, the Judy Moody books have won numerous awards, ranging from a PUBLISHERS WEEKLY Best Book of the Year to an International Reading Association Children's Choice. "Judy has taken on a life of her own," the author notes, with nearly 3 million Judy Moody books in print. Interestingly, the feisty third-grader is highly popular with boys and girls, making for a strong base of fans who are among Megan McDonald's strongest incentives to keep writing, along with "too many ideas and a little chocolate." And now -- by popular demand -- Judy Moody's little brother, Stink, gets his chance to star in his own adventures! Beginning with STINK: THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING KID, three more stories, and his own encyclopedia, STINK-O-PEDIA, Stink's special style comes through loud and strong -- enhanced by a series of comic strips, drawn by Stink himself, which are sprinkled throughout the first book. About the need for a book all about Stink, Megan McDonald says, "Once, while I was visiting a class full of Judy Moody readers, the kids, many with spiked hair à la Judy's little brother, chanted, 'Stink! Stink! Stink! Stink! Stink!' as I entered the room. In that moment, I knew that Stink had to have a book all his own."

More recently, Megan McDonald has recalled some of her own childhood with the warmth, humor -- and squabbles -- of three spunky sisters in THE SISTERS CLUB.

Megan McDonald and her husband live in Sebastopol, California, with two dogs, two adopted horses, and fifteen wild turkeys that like to hang out on their back porch.

I can't remember if I read these as a kid, but this series is definitely a title I recognize. Even after revisiting it and reading it in one sitting, I still don't remember the story, so it's a gamble if I ever actually read it or not. Nevertheless, it was quick and fun and I'm sure I would've loved it. The story felt disjointed and like there wasn't a relevant storyline until the last few chapters, but it just brought back so much nostalgia even just having this on my bookshelf and reading something from the year 2000 was fun.

Judy Moody is a series of books that have been around for quite a while, there is even a Judy Moody movie that was released in 2011. The books have recently been given a make-over and this is the first in the new-look series.

Judy is a headstrong young girl aged around 8 or 9 years old. It’s her first day back at school after the summer break (not sure if that is what it is called in the USA). She is in a bad mood. She doesn’t want to go into a new classroom, with a new teacher and have a new desk. She has this feeling that she is going to be made to sit at the front and next to Frank-Eats-Paste-Pearl, both of which come true.

The teacher tells them he wants them to get to know everyone else properly so he’s giving them a project to do. They are to make an ‘All About Me’ collage which will include everything about themselves, from their favourite pet to their hobbies, clubs they belong too and what they want to be when they grow up.

Together with the help of her friend Rocky the two set out on making their collages, but there are plenty of laughs to have along the way, many down to Stink, Judy’s little brother.

I have know about the Judy Moody books for years but never read any, nor have I ever bought any for my children – Big mistake – If this first book is anything to go by these books are hilarious and give you a proper laugh-out-loud experience. Judy might be moody but she is also a lot of fun too.

The book is easy to read and contains no long, hard words to figure out. The font is large and clear making this a great book for a child who can read but wants something a little longer – A first taste of reading a novel, although one at just 176 pages.

There are black and white illustrations throughout the book which add to the enjoyment and bring the story to life. There are also Mood-Tastic stickers inside as well as information on the author and illustrator, information about Judy and a vocabulary for her. Plus there is a section that teaches how to make your own ‘Me Collage’.

The book is just brilliant and I’m sure young children will enjoy not only this first book but the whole series too.

- Hi, Superman ! How you're doin' ?

- Hi, Loïs ! I'm in great shape today ! I will save the world, one more time. But I don't know who to start with.....Michelle, maybe ?
Or Sophie ? Or Charlotte...mmm...
Oh... but Louise has been begging me for five days to save her, at least once....
You know what, Loïs ?

- What ?

- I'II take my day off, today. Besides, I could not fly at the optimal altitude . There's a storm forecast, today, I risk a shameful crash. If Heaven can wait, so can the world too. Don't you think ?

- Quite so. Meantime, until your mood come back, you could change your timing belt, it could break during your flight, and the world would have one less Superman, don't you think ?

- Loïs...Don't jinx it...

This review consists of two parts: 1. My daughter's review (she's 8) and 2. my review (the Mom's).

DAUGHTER SAYS:

I think Judy Moody is funny and I would be friends with her in real life. We have some things that are the same; like, we're both in Grade 3, we both have little brothers, and we both have a pet cat. There are some really funny parts in this book. In a spelling test, Judy has to find five words out of GINO'S EXTRA CHEESE PIZZA, she finds the words tree, Texas, and taxi, but instead she writes down 1) no, 2) no, 3) no, 4) no, and 5) no. When her teacher asks her to share her words she says "no, no, no, no, no". I found this really funny. I like the part where they find a "moon rock" and smash it to make "moon dust". Her brother Stink then sells the moon dust for 50 cents a bag.

I like this club called the T.P. Club which stands for Toad Pee Club because Judy and her friend found a toad and it peed on them so they started a Toad Pee Club - but I don't really want to join that club. I like her brother Stink's crazy costume when he goes to see the President of the United States. When he gets back, Judy and her friend had stuck a fake plastic hand out of the toilet and when her brother goes to the bathroom he gets scared and yells:

Hey, Dad! Mom! There's somebody in the toilet!

I can't think of anything I don't like about it.

I really liked this book and I would recommend it to my friends who are girls. Boys my age might also like it because Judy's friends are two boys, Rocky and Frank. I would read the next Judy Moody books.

MOM SAYS:

At first, I was a bit taken aback by Judy's sassiness toward her teacher. That kind of back talk would not be tolerated in our house! Then, she's just downright mean to a little boy in her class, Frank. Fortunately, Judy's character develops in a positive direction throughout the rest of the book; so, theoretically a young reader would see that once Judy loses her negative attitude, she befriends someone new, fully enjoys Grade 3, and really just becomes a better human.

One of the things I particularly appreciated about this book is that Judy is portrayed (in the end) in such a way that she could be a good role model for tween girls. For example, Judy aspires to become a doctor and her role model was Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman doctor in the United States. She collects atypical items such as dead moths, scabs (ok, a bit gross!), body parts (from dolls), and Band-Aids and isn't afraid of holding toads! She won me over with the problem-solving she did after her brother dumped juice on her Me Collage the day she was to present it to the class.

In the end, I really liked Judy! In fact, I felt that Judy was a rather realistic representation of 8/9 year-old girls. Yes, they are moody. Yes, they can be sassy. Yes, they would rather get soaking wet than use a "baby" umbrella. Yes, they can be mean to their little brothers/sisters. Yes, when they are not busy tormenting their younger siblings, they can be kind and compassionate. Yes, they are smart, imaginative, and groovy.

IS IT JUST ME? Judy's parents go to Washington with Stink and leave Judy with Rocky presumably under his parents' supervision. Yet, Judy and Rocky sneak back into Judy's house to pull the gag on Stink - - literally waiting for him to come home so they can guide him to the bathroom. The parents don't seem surprised or concerned that the two kids are in the house unsupervised. Ok, so two 8/9 year olds are in a house alone unsupervised - - does anyone else have a problem with this? Just asking...

Oh, and while Clementine gets in trouble calling her brother vegetable names, apparently Judy has the go-ahead from her parents to call her little brother Stink! Really?! Derogatory nicknames are ok?! Weren't there other nicknames available?

While Judy is not exactly as charming as Clementine, I still did like her overall. The author cleverly uses the first book in the series to introduce us to Judy through the Me Collage project. Judy has moods - so do most girls that age! I feel she does redeem herself by the end of the book and therefore I would recommend this book to girls up to 9 years old. The book has many illustrations which are excellent and the text is not particularly dense therefore it probably would not be very challenging to read for older tweens. I think boys in the same age range may like this book as Judy is not a typical girlie-girl and her friends in the book are boys. I reserve the right to change my rating if I read the next books in the series and find Judy's character deteriorating.

I was OBSESSED with these books when I was younger, and Maddie found the seven books we had when we were looking through our DVDs and found them stacked behind, so we decided to pull them all out and have a read! They're ridiculously quick to get through, but the nostalgia is real!

I feel like Judy Moody was the Phineas and Ferb before Phineas and Ferb. She just does whatever she wants to do, no matter what, she's got ambitions, too, which makes her a great character for young kids to read about! I can't wait to read more!

This was a reread for me. I love Megan McDonald’s Stink and Judy Moody series. We first meet Judy as she’s about to begin third grade in Mr Toad’s Todd’s class at Virginia Dare School. Judy is in a mood because she didn’t go anywhere special during the vacation and she just knows that everyone else will be wearing a rare (Judy slang for cool) shirt from whatever theme park or other enviable destination they visited.

While Judy is hoping to sit near her best friend Rocky in class, she is certain she’ll be forced to sit near Frank Eats-Paste Pearl. Naturally she’s correct and she has to sit at the front of the classroom too. When it looks like her mood couldn’t get any worse Frank, who has pestered and irritated her every school year, invites her to his birthday party three weeks away and she has to try to find a way to get out of it.

One of the only good things that happens that day is a school assignment where each student needs to make a collage all about themselves which they will later be presenting to the class. Judy thinks this sounds like fun but of course that doesn’t match her mood so she won’t tell anyone she’s looking forward to working on it.

In Judy Moody Was in a Mood we also get to meet Judy’s parents and her younger brother Stink who became so popular he got his own spin off series. Both series are entertaining, funny and usually wind up with the kids learning something that makes them better kids than they already are. Judy is mean to Stink and plays a trick on him in this book but overall the siblings look out for one another.

I really enjoyed this reread. I discovered Judy Moody and Stink at my local library (yay libraries!) almost a year ago and have read all of each series that my library owns. While I do have a few favourites in each series there hasn’t been a single one I haven’t enjoyed. Starting from scratch again with Judy reminded me how much fun these books are and I’m now keen to reread them all.

Peter H. Reynolds’ illustrations are always wonderful and this book introduces the reader to what the Moody family look like (including their cat called Mouse) and how expressive they all are. My favourite illustration in this book is Judy’s finished collage.

Amongst other interesting tidbits you get to find out that she’s a member of the exclusive T.P. Club. T.P. doesn’t stand for toilet paper but as it’s a secret club I can’t tell you any more. We also discover throughout the book the worst and funniest things that have happened to Judy and are introduced to her various rare collections. Incidentally I can personally blame this book for my own obsession collection of cute and quirky bandaids.

Need to Eat - Rainforest Mist ice cream. I have no idea what rainforest mist tastes like but apparently it’s blue and I’m intrigued.

Need to Buy - Glow in the dark bloodshot eyeball bandaids. 👁

My first read was ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. The reread, now that I know the characters so well and am itching to retrace the whole adventure to date, was definitely worth ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Candlewick Press for the opportunity to read this book.

Rating: 3.5/5 || Recenzia pe Secretele Cărților

carte judy moody are toane megan mcdonald editura gama

Chapter book - series
For 2nd-4th grade

Judy Moody starts 3rd grade and struggles to find a good mood while she deals with her little brother, school projects, and friendships in this funny chapter book.

Divided into fairly episodic short chapters, this entertaining read tells the story of how Judy Moody started third grade. Younger readers will feel for Judy's bad moods and frustrations over the class's "Me" project and the attempts at friendship from paste-eating boys. Judy is no girly girl, and she's determined and opinionated. Her relationship with younger brother Stink is realistically divided between friendship and animosity, and her friendships with classmates are equally authentic. Plenty of illustrations bring Judy's quirky personality to life, and the size and style of the book, combined with plenty of kid humor - make it great for readers who are just getting into chapter books.

Booklist's review captures the tone and style of the book while providing enough description to help a librarian with reader's advisory. School Library Journal's review provides similar description but doesn't manage to capture the mood quite as well.

Nama:
"KOLASE AKU"
Hal yang mungkin bisa dimasukkan:
Siapa aku?
Tempat Tinggalku:
Teman-temanku:
Sahabatku:
Peliharaan Favoriteku:
Cita-citaku:
Hobi:
Kejadian paling buruk yang pernah kualami:
Kejadian paling lucu:
Klub:...

Ehmmm kayaknya asyik yah?

Judy Moody. Lagi mood. Bukan mood bagus. Mood jelek. Liburan udah selesai. Waktunya masuk sekolah. Tapi dia belom pergi kemana-mana selama liburan musim panas. Untunglah, dia udah makan ikan hiu. Jadi, mood jeleknya sedikit terobati.

Judy Moody. Lagi mood. Bukan mood bagus. Mood jelek. Sampulnya bagus. Keren. Ada bolongannya. Delapan buah. Kenapa delapan?

Empat bintang.

Judy is not happy about starting third grade, where she just knows she will have to sit next to Frank again. Frank, who eats paste and who gave her five valentines in kindergarten, cupcakes on numerous holidays in first grade, and who indeed is in the seat next to her when she arrives in her third grade classroom, and immediately passes her an invitation to his birthday party. Sheesh!

Plus, unlike all the kids, she doesn't have a shirt that says something, like Orlando, or Paris, or... anything! But, according to her dad, she DID eat a shark that they got at the farmer's market, which inspires her own homemade shirt design...

And if that weren't bad enough, there's no class porcupine, and no class trip to D.C., like there was last year. But there will be a cool collage project all about Judy, a new club that involves toad-holding, and a new perspective on Frank. It turns out that the paste eating was a one-time thing done on a dare, which is not nerdy, but COOL!

I enjoyed Judy and her scrappy spirit. She is a fine successor to Ramona. Plus, the book, with its amusing illustrations and chunky format was appealing to look at and hold. I give this one a big thumbs-up for ages 6 and up!

"I read this whole book in 6 days! I liked reading this book because it was so funny. Judy Moody has a brother just like me. His name is Stink. He got to go to George Washington's house. My favorite part was when Judy Moody and her two friends hid a pretend hand in the toilet seat to scare Stink out of the bathroom when he had to use it. Frank Pearl lied to Judy Moody. He said there were girls next door, but they were boys. Judy got peed on by a toad. I never want that to happen to me. When she walked into the classroom that day, the pizza table had three legs! Stink sold a kind of bag. It was lunch bags with moon dust. Judy Moody yelled so loud that it became an earthquake and moon rocks came crashing down and it almost broke the road because it was so heavy." (Cadee, age 7)

My son and I read this together. Judy Moody is quite the character. I didn’t like how she was sassy and a bit gross but she came around in the end. My son liked it a lot better than I did, so the rating is from him. He said it would have been 5 stars but she collects scabs and that’s nasty. 😂
