"I NEED TO TELL YOU ABOUT TRUMPET." After Elizabeth Walker mouths those words to Andrew Keller, a lover she has not seen in twenty years, their shattered hearts ignite uncontrollable events.
Andrew pleads with his old friend, Jake Travis, to locate Elizabeth. When Andrew is murdered, Jake is asked to investigate.
Jake arranges a rendezvous with Elizabeth and senses that she is harboring secrets of her own. He learns of a tragic accident two decades ago that decimated her family. Like Elizabeth, Jake battles his own demons, for his past is a roadblock to his and Kathleen's happiness.
Elizabeth's quest, Kathleen's desperate wish, and Jake's pledge to find who killed Andrew Keller culminate in the final repercussions of a lost love.
Filled with mounting suspense, and at times equally humorous and tragic, The Elizabeth Walker Affair is an emotionally engaging mystery. It will linger with you long after the final page.
Robert Lane is the author of the critically acclaimed Jake Travis novels. His debut novel, "The Second Letter" was the Independent Book Publishers Association 2015 Gold Medal Winner for Best New Voice: Fiction.
Florida Weekly states: “Jake Travis is one of the best leading men to take the thriller-fiction stage in recent years. Lane mixes confidence and doubt, steadiness and recklessness, and toughness and sensitivity in engaging proportions.”

An Outstanding Story That Takes You Through Lost Love
What a cracking read this book is!! A little bit of everything that starts with a chilling mystery as a long ago friend visits unveiling some parts of his life Jake Travis never knew about. They had been in the war together, but not close since then. After leaving Jake, his friend Andrew ends up dead, making Jake rethink what he had been trying to say.... Jake is asked to investigate the death of his friend, and to do so must travel down a long road of characters, some old friends and some foes. The story flows beautifully from past to present, with moments of rich emotion and intense action! A sparkling story that will keep you guessing, as you find past love and the shocking moment that tears all apart. I received an ARC from the author, and I thank him for such a descriptive account that held me tightly through every twist until the explosive finale! I offer You my honest thoughts and feelings in this review, and hope that you, also, will read this stunning story.
Thank You to NetGalley and Mason Alley Publishing for this ARC!!
Andrew pleads with his old friend, Jake Travis, to locate his ex-flame Elizabeth. But when Andrew is suddenly murdered, Jake is asked to investigate.
Jake arranges a rendezvous with Elizabeth and senses that she is harboring secrets of her own. He learns of a tragic accident two decades ago that decimated her family. Like Elizabeth, Jake battles his own demons, for his past is a roadblock to his and Kathleen's happiness.
It was an interesting read about a long lost love and the secrets that were buried for about twenty years.
Initially it was very slow and it took me some time to actually understand it, but as the story progressed, it got more engaging and the ending was something unexpected!!
I received a review copy from the author at my request and this is my honest opinion. I can't decide how I feel about this book. I think it is a terrific story but the delivery fell far short of the mark, in my opinion. (I know I'm in the minority here.) Mr. Lane could and does give Shakespeare a run for his money. Not only is this story an unmitigated tragedy with multiple deaths, star-crossed lovers, a family torn apart. etc, all of Shakespeare's favorite tools, but the writing is flowery and pretentious. For example, in talking about Jake and Kathleen's cat, "She turned her head abruptly toward the screen and then, finding nothing of interest there, sulked her insouciance into another room." Or "We're a crooked breed, with anchorless imagination capable of drating a toyland world that we yearn to be true. That we have to believe in. " Really? Maybe I'm slow but that doesn't even make sense to me. Poetry was never my strong suit and that's what it borders on. Or maybe I just like my murder mysteries to be straight forward. If I want flowery prose and fifteen words to convey a thought when three would do just fine, I'll check out Shakespeare. I'm disappointed that Mr. Lane's style clashes so badly with my tastes and the fault most likely lies with me (See, he's rubbing off on me now!!) because I love this story and think Jake Travis and his friends could be people I would like to spend time with. But I had a headache long before I reached the halfway point of this book from all the extraneous words and having to reread paragraphs to make sure I completely understood what was going on. I'm sorry. This just isn't my cup of tea.
#7??? Seven? How did I not know about this series before??? This was a fantastic read which was like a combination of Lee Child's Jack Reacher series, D.P Lyle's Jake Longly series, and I don't know who else....What an awesome, likable hero. This book has it all; a very compelling mystery which unfolds throughout the book, interesting characters, great dialogues, and honestly some really deep and touching stuff on love. Robert Lane is a new favorite author. This was a great read!
This was a great read! A sad story of Elizabeth and Andrew and how the decisions that were made 20 years ago from their affair led to the tragedies in current day. There was a bit of romance and a bit of mystery which I love!
I just reviewed The Elizabeth Walker Affair by Robert Lane. #NetGalley
An old fashioned "who done it" built around a passionate love story. I simply loved this beautiful book. It was so much more than I had envisioned. My gratitude to Goodreads giveaways and to author Robert Lane for my signed copy.
The fact that “The Elizabeth Walker Affair” is the seventh book in the Jake Travis novel series is a testament to the author’s way with words and story crafting. The intricate details of the setting and character descriptions loll the reader into the Florida climate and scenery Lane creates.
Bookended by love, this winding tale kicks off with a private murder investigation ignited by a visit from a US Marshal. “The Elizabeth Walker Affair” is delightfully and heartbreakingly romantic while shrouded in the mystery of death and killing. Rocketing into action within the first twenty pages, readers are kept firmly within the plot’s grasp until the very last page.
Author, Robert Lane, enchants readers as we explore different cities within the Florida corridor, attending several lobbyist fundraisers and confronting several characters with checkered pasts. “The Elizabeth Walker Affair” simultaneously feels like a murder mystery while remaining wholly within the illusion of a lost romance; readers will delight in Jake Travis’ unwinding of the robbery-gone-wrong killing of his old military buddy, just days after he approaches Jake for help.
Successfully reading as a standalone, there is a clear history between our protagonist, Jake, and his “friends.” From alluding to a murder charge our lead character was cleared of, to the Harbor House he set up with Morgan, the author injects Jake’s past throughout this book without making new readers feel left out. We are even given a look at Jake’s romantic interest and future wife, Kathleen, as Lane weaves Jake’s personal life into the story in an attempt to keep the read from becoming too murder heavy, thus maintaining its romantic feel.
However, perhaps the author’s greatest talent, is his ability to lyrically illustrate, in uncanny detail, Jake’s surroundings while crafting an attention-grabbing plot of lost romance and disguised murder. He is able to accomplish all this while never straying from taking on the heavy topics such as gun control, adultery, and adoption, as readers enter a world of NRA lobbyists, school shooting victims and Florida’s unique gun laws.
“The Elizabeth Walker Affair” may be the seventh in the series, but Lane provides a compelling argument to curl up and begin with book one, savoring every last lyrical detail of Jake Travis’ world.
Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book. The description caught my attention along with the cover art. This is my first time reading a book by this author. While the story started slow for me and I didn’t enjoy the way the main character “talked” in an overly direct and sometimes off-putting manner, I’m glad I stuck with it. The story is a whodunnit but that really is not the primary discovery. The story dives into the youth of two of the main characters and how actions and decisions from their youth sent their lives in staggeringly different directions. The author reveals the best qualities of Jake Travis and the beauty of the people he encounters. I ended up loving the story. I recommend this book if you like discovering more about the humanity of characters than you like action packed mysteries.
I found it difficult to get into this book. The characters are not interesting to me, which may be due to not having read earlier books in the series. There is an overabundance of metaphors and very dense writing that I personally do not care for. I gave it a few chapters, and it just did not engage me at all.
Thank you to NetGalley for a copy in exchange for an honest review.
They say that one moment, one incident, can change your life forever; whether it’s to tether you more tightly to something or completely tear it apart. This is a story about that one moment in time that entrenches itself within true, blinding, ruinous love, and then circles back around. This isn’t a straight shot mystery, for there will be many obstacles to hurdle before the truth is revealed. You’ll be riveted, engrossed, and surprised as much by the journey as with the outcome. Lane’s ability to weave the various threads of Jake’s life together, as well as separately, always thrills me. The sandbar celebration is a show stopper, and the boisterous gun violence debate is timely. Lane’s intelligent, often sarcastic, and witty conversational volleying is ever-present as he proves to be a masterful wordsmith. The settings are so detailed I felt I was there, with the southwest Florida islands beckoning me back. The characters are as colorful and varied as always, and the constants are like old friends that have come to visit. However, I am going to miss Lizzy especially, as I found so many personal connections to her, she is a part of me. If you are a fan of Robert Lane as I am, you will see the subtle connections to his other books, which are all worthy in their own right, but I know this one is going to stick with me for a long while. *I received an ARC from the author for an honest review
Jake Travis is an educated beach bum, retired from the army Rangers and known to free-lance with some of his Ranger cohorts from time to time. He lives a laid-back lifestyle with Kathleen, the love of his life (whom he finally marries!) and Hadley II, the cat. The Elizabeth Walker Affair is the seventh book in Robert Lane’s series, and one of the best. I developed a major crush on Jake in the first book I read and have been an ardent fan since then. I love his sarcastic attitude, his swashbuckling demeanor, and his propensity to sit on the dock, drink good wine and eat good food, all the while waxing eloquently on his topic of the day. In this book, I sense that Jake is mellowing. His empathy for Lizzy Walker, who is haunted by her past, is reflective of Jake’s own history catching up with him as he and Kathleen begin their married life. He realizes that he is at a personal crossroad—I can’t wait to see the path he takes. As for Elizabeth Walker, hers is a tragic and sad life. Lane did a wonderful job describing her love for Andrew Keller, a long-lost love. Often male writers miss the mark on these romantic interludes—not Robert Lane. Lane blends a love story with a mystery killing, political corruption and loss. He ends the book with promises of a new Jake. Stay tuned for the next episode. My thanks to Robert Lane for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Jake Travis is a private detective who spent time in the military. He is trying to start a new life and a family with his significant other Kathleen when someone from his Army days shows up on his doorstep. This old friend asks him to track down an old flame he had recently run in to. When the friend is murdered days later, Jake starts investigating who killed him. His investigation unravels a decades-old mystery.
Overall, I thought the plot of this book was well-planned and well-executed. The story was pretty well paced and it kept me interested, wanting to see how the story end. I did predict some of the big twists, but that didn’t detract from my overall enjoyment of the book.
I frequently thought the prose was overworked and over complicated but the dialogue was pretty good. The beginning of the book was a little rough for me and I told myself I wanted to read at least 20% of the book before deciding not to finish - by the time I got to 20% I was invested in the story enough to keep reading.
I didn’t hate it, but don’t know that I’d read any more of this series. If you’re looking for something light and easy to read this might be a good choice.
An emotionally charged mystery thriller with a fulfilling ending.
Jake Travis’ friend Andrew has been murdered, and the only person who could help him solve the mystery is an old lover, Elizabeth Walker.
Elizabeth has a secret of her own, will she confide in Jake? Will Jake conquer his own demons?
This was a very emotionally charged novel. The story is told in both first and third person, and I thought it was a very refreshing and clever idea for the author to reflect on the characters’ past as a way to ponder how actions can have an impact on our present, no matter how much we try to run away from them.
The ending was the best part of this novel…, just wow. I don’t think I could have ever expected that, my jaw dropped to the floor.
All in all, the Elizabeth Walker affair is a gripping story that will captivate you. I hope to hear more about Jake Travis, and look forward to a new installment of this series!
Disclosure: I would like to thank Mason Alley Publishing for an advanced copy of The Elizabeth Walker Affair by Robert Lane. This is my honest review.
What an excellent read! This is book 7 in the Jake Travis series. The Elizabeth Walker Affair beginswith Jake Travis hearing from a long-ago friend, Andrew, who tells him a bit about his past. They had been in the war together, but hadn't been closed since then. After leaving Jake, Andrew ends up dead. Making Jake wonder about what Andrew had told him and if there was anything to the mystery.
Jake is asked to look into Andrew's death. In his investigation, he finds himself revisiting friends and foes. Robert Lane does an excellent job with descriptions and characterizations. His storytelling moves along beautifully and you find yourself saying, just one more page, while reading late into the night. I'll have to admit that there was one part that left me shocked. I definitely recommend this book.
I would like to thank Robert Lane, Mason Alley Publishing and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
"The Elizabeth Walker Affair" was overall a good book. The mystery of Andrew Keller's death and how it related to Elizabeth Walker and their past history was interesting and well written. The author does a good job of revealing clues without giving away too much too soon. The main characters are well developed.
However, while the book is billed as a stand-alone novel, the backstory of Jake Travis and his friends and associates is highly relevant at multiple parts of the story. Having not read the previous books in the series, I felt at a loss at times. I would recommend readers read the earlier books first, as it would likely make some parts of the book clearer and give the reader a better understanding of Jake Travis.
I received a copy of the e-book via NetGalley in exchange for a review.
ELIZABETH WALKER AFFAIR....# 7...Robert.Lane Andrew remembering Elizabeth the one that was engaged, he didn’t try to win her, some twenty years ago. The reason for the visit, I think I just saw her, she came up and said" I need to tell you about trumpet" , I noticed the pain, and then she was gone.He needed Jake to be the indiscreet person to find out. A murder of Andrew and now Jake is called in, finding her was easy, the secrets were not that she held. The dialog was smooth flowing, almost poetic at times. The pain and mistakes of youth. The plot and ending to this mystery was good, and not to be missed in reading, well done. Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion
I almost gave up on this one a few times as I found it difficult to follow and the characters evoked no feelings whatsoever but I persevered and the last third of the book was somewhat better. A mystery from the beginning involving a random visit from a long ago friend and then found dead. The narrator is asked to investigate and all signs point in one direction, the husband of an ex-girlfriend. The characters just didn’t work for me. Many twists and turns which kept me reading. Some of my puzzles and questions were tied up at the end, but still not a memorable book for me.
This book was different. I enjoy mysteries but I don't like a book that keeps jumping back and forth as this one tended to do. The best part was the ending. Frankly, I usually can get going in a book rather quickly but I found this one a little slow. Once it got going it was OK but it took its time getting to that point. I appreciate receiving this ARC but I'm not really sure I want to read any more Jake Travis novels. Guess you realize by now that I always give an honest review. I'm sure there are many out there who will love this book - maybe you are one of them.
It has been awhile since I stopped by to visit Jake. So I sat down yesterday to see what he and his friends have been up to. Jake had quit a tale to share. It was a good story and full of intrigue, drama and a fabulous ending twist. Jake sure can spin a story that grabs the attention. I caught up with his friends too. It was so interesting I just could not walk away. I do need to stop by again soon so I don't miss a single story Jake wants to share.
Robert Lane has done it again. I look forward to the next book!
Jake Travis has been asked to find if an old friend had been murdered by a politically minded man.
Jake turned down his old friend’s request to find a woman from his past. This haunted him when he heard the man had been killed supposedly in a gas station robbery. His handler asks him to dig into the murder as this is what they believe it really was. So now he has to find the woman and close the case. This is a story that will break your heart, but will leave you believing there are good people left in the world. .
I won a Kindle version of this book through a Goodreads giveaway.
This book took me a while to get into, but once it got rolling (and new characters ceased entering) it picked up speed. It was a quick read. The author has a tendency at times for a bit of accurate yet "let's show off my extensive vocabulary" words and phrases. I cannot say I felt a connectivity with any of the characters, but the story between Elizabeth and Andrew was interesting.
I found myself sad reading through The Elizabeth Walker Affair. Lots of unfortunate events that lead to a lot of ultimate sadness in the end. I guess I just like the happy ending to a love affair. I think this could have ended a lot different but I can appreciate what the author was trying to do. Special Thanks to NetGalley, Robert Lane, and Mason Alley Publishing for the advance digital copy in exchange for my honest opinion.
This is the first book I have read by Robert Lane which I won as a giveaway on goodreads by Mason Alley Publishing. Its an incredible murder mystery which will keep you on edge from the starting page, the author has done a wonderful job in creating intense vivid scenes full of suspense. The entire story is full of twists and turns and has an ending which one cannot see coming. It is a hard book to put down. Mystery and suspense lovers would truly enjoy this book.
Andrew Keller, an old Army buddy, shows up at Jake’s house, wanting Jake to help him with a mistake he made 20 years ago when he lost the love of his life. Andrew is killed shortly after and Jake tries to find out who killed him. The characters are rich and the writing is filled with humor as well as intrigue. A little mystery, a little romance, and an abundance of insight into relationships. Great book!
This is the first book by this author I have read and I plan on reading more.
Andrew, an old friend from the Army, comes by to see Jake and request his help. As Jake starts investigating, Andrew is killed in what appears to be a random shooting. Andrew wanted Jake to contact his first love from 20 years ago who is now married to a lobbyist who may or may not be involved in illegal activities.
This story had lots of twists and turns and the ending was not at all what I expected.
I ended up really liking this story. A man is killed and some think it was not a random act. Enter Jake. I found it worth reading and yes I shed more than a few tears before the end. Elizabeth Walker is a wealthy woman very involved in an organization titled ABC. A Book for Every Child. By the end of the story I felt she was a special, strong, but damaged woman. Great read. Also, I won this on Goodreads. Thank you so much.
The angst that Jake Travis displays in this book drives the emotion evoked from his rich characters and plot. Elizabeth is a strong woman whose story is heartbreaking. I don't like spoilers so won't say more than I feel this is the strongest story yet. All of the books I've read have been excellent. This is my favorite. I care for the characters, their lives, the setting, and the sub stories in each book. I can't wait for the next.
The plot is very good and the characters are fantastic, but it's not good when an author writes from the main character POV and still has to jump to third person in order to tell a story. The language is amusing, can be a little tiring, but it's different and I like it. The ending is the best part of the book, and that's always great.
This was a great read! It had a great long lost love story line, with a compelling mystery. I usually don’t get sad reading books but this made me really connect with the characters. I wish things had turned out differently for Andrew and Elizabeth. Overall a great read, took me a bit to get into it but once I did I loved it.
