Regina Scott paints such a magnificent picture of Yosemite in this novel, I wanted to go visit myself!
Truly, this series will cause the reader to 'see' the landscape and natural wonders as they are actually there. I was captivated not only by the story, which is very well done, but the beauty of the national park as seen through the eyes of the characters.

Scott includes a wonderful plot line as well, populated with equally wonderful characters. Kate and Lt. Prescott were precious together and her son Danny stole my heart. Her hotel cook, Alberta, made me hungry with those pies of hers, too! Book two in this series is not to be missed.

Nothing Short Of Wondrous is Regina Scott's second book in the American Wonders series.
I enjoyed reading the wonderful descriptions of Yellowstone National Park.
It was brought to life through the author's words and this armchair traveler enjoyed her glimpse of life in the early days of Yellowstone National Park.
Intrigue and romance will keep you reading this book full of strong themes of putting trust in God during trying times and forgiveness.
I am enjoying this series set in US National Parks and I look forward to the next one.

This book was almost as good as a real visit to Yellowstone. It was a virtual visit with vibrant descriptions and a great story of adventure in 1886. Ms. Scott wows us with the scenery and tells a wondrous tale of widowed hotel owner, Kate Tremaine and Lieutenant Will Prescott who is there to protect the park. Both are grieving and wary of new attachments. But there is much to do to patrol the area and keep up the hotel for visitors. Kate and Will strike a bargain: Kate will be guide and Will will help with repairs.
As the story unfolds, we see the vast beauty and unique landscape of the area. The characters are real and the dangers are ominous. The hero and heroine re-discover their faith and work together to guard the park from poachers. Ms. Scott writes in an easy style that showcases the grandeur of one of our nation’s treasures. And she writes romance that talks of honesty, forgiveness and repentance.
I enjoyed the first two books and am looking forward to reading the third in this series: American Wonders Collection.

Nothing Short of Wondrous by Regina Scott is the second book in American Wonders Collection. It can be read as a standalone if you have not read A Distance Too Grand. I thought Nothing Short of Wondrous was well-written with developed characters. The story moved along at a gentle pace. The author certainly did her research for this book. She painted such a vivid picture of Yellowstone National Park. I could envision the park in my mind with its numerous natural wonders along with flora and fauna. Regina Scott really made the park come alive for me. The story was intriguing. The Calvary were working with limited resources to protect such a large amount of property. It was hard to believe that people were out to destroy such beautiful animals and natural wonders (like the paint pots). I learned some interesting facts about Yellowstone National Park. This book got me curious to learn more. I liked the action that kept the story moving forward to its delightful conclusion. The romance was nicely done. I liked that it did not dominate the story. We get to see people get to know each other while enjoying each other’s company. They learn to trust each other as well as respect each other while they fell in love. Lt. William Prescott had an issue in his past that drives him to be a better man. I think it enhanced the story without adding drama to the relationship. I liked the various characters in the story. Alberta, the cook, was one of my favorites along with Kate’s curious son, Danny. I look forward to the next tale in the American Wonders Collection. Nothing Short of Wondrous has friendship, mystery, suspense, romance, action, faith, and family all woven together into one interesting tale. Nothing Short of Wondrous is a multifaceted historical novel with perilous paint pots, a curious kid, a problematic poacher, besieged bison, a chivalrous Calvary officer, and an impressive inn owner.

For those times when you have to stay where you are (like right now), it doesn't get any better than taking a mental vacation by reading about a plucky young mother running her own hotel in the heart of Yellowstone country and falling in love with the handsome lieutenant who's assigned to protect the park.

This is a thoroughly enjoyable novel set in the late 1800's, when tourism in Yellowstone was on the increase. The widowed Mrs. Kate Tremaine is introduced as the managing genius of the Geyser Gateway Inn. Between charming the guests and threatening to shoot the guests if they dare lay one finger on any of the park's natural features, she has plenty to do. But when a cavalry detachment sets up camp nearby, she finds herself with one more job: act as guide for the soldiers until they know their way around. In return, Lieutenant Will Prescott promises to help her with odd jobs around the inn. The two of them immediately spark each other's interest, but first they have to deal with poachers, hotel rivalry, forest fire, and the looming challenge of a Yellowstone winter.

The story pulled me in. I loved the setting and thought the characters of Kate and Will were well drawn. Even though Will had a tragic backstory, it was nice to see that it didn't derail the relationship or create melodrama. What the reader wants from a book like this is just to see two nice people enjoy each other's company and learn to trust and love. And that's what the reader gets here.

Thanks to NetGalley and Revell for this advance review copy. Book goes on sale Oct. 20.

What great characters and what a spectacular setting for a novel! I have never been to Yellowstone, but I feel as if I have been – at least back in 1886!

The author did an amazing job of describing both the wonders and the dangers of this park, vividly creating pictures for my mind to enjoy. Yet, this novel was not weighted down by description and detail, only enhanced.

The main characters were compelling to read about. I really liked both Kate Tremaine and her son, Danny, as well as Lieutenant Will Prescott. The worked well together and their admiration for each other grew naturally and sweetly.

The characters in this story fought for the natural beauty of Yellowstone and the animals who lived there. This story left me uplifted and happy for Kate, Will, and Danny.

Through the eyes of the author we get to see the beauty of Yellowstone, and yes I have been there, but this is when the government has given the US Cavalry control.
We are given a widow who is running a hotel in the park, and raising a precocious six year old boy, he is such a delight. We find out why she is a widow, we see and meet least savory characters that make an illegal income poaching, and we meet a Lieutenant with the Calvary, that is determined to stop this horrible crimes.
Our Lieutenant has a secret that took him down once, and we learn it and. The effect it had on his career and life. We see sparks fling between Kate, our widow, and Will, our Lt. but can they overcome the obstacles that are thrown at them?
Now this is the second book in this series, and yes, it can be read alone, but you might want to read the first once you pick this one up!

I enjoyed the first book in the American Wonders series, so I was all in for the second. While I didn't like it quite as much as its predecessor, I still found it to be an engaging, uplifting novel that kept my attention throughout. The historical Yellowstone setting is an interesting one as I knew little about the park's history. Kate, Will, and the rest of the cast is made up of likable characters, even if they're not super original or memorable. Plot-wise, NOTHING SHORT OF WONDROUS is mostly romance, although there's some tension that comes from poachers in the park. I would have preferred a little more adventure or mystery or something to balance out the love story. Overall, though, I enjoyed the novel which is clean, entertaining, and faith-promoting (without being preachy). If I could, I would give this book 3 1/2 stars; since I can't, I'm rounding up.

This is my third attempt at reading this book and I finally finished! I knew I would love the historical details of Yellowstone National Park, it’s my favorite place to visit! This is a very slow moving story but the romance is sweet and the park details are a nice touch.

A wonderful historical adventure romance set in the early days of Yellowstone National Park! The year that the army moved in to help patrol and protect the park, 1886, presents a unique set of problems that bring the main characters together: a lack of reliable guides and maps, the threat of poachers, cut throat competition between hotels, and few safe roads through dangerous terrain. Lieutenant Will Prescott strikes a bargain with widowed Kate to trade building maintenance on her hotel for her guide services in the park.

I enjoyed all of the descriptions of park landmarks, and could easily picture the wonderful landscape of this unique park! The author does a good job of painting the background, including the wildlife and the thermal features, as well as the threat of illegal hunters. Some peril, danger and a little mystery added interest and moved the story along at a faster pace in parts.

I loved little Danny and his part of the story. Kate had it tough being a woman in business and as a single parent. Her independent nature put her at odds with having to rely on anyone too much. The need for grace, redemption, and a second chance at love are a common thread between Will's and Kate's stories. I liked how the circuit riding preacher gives a bit of a nudge to Kate with the story of Martha and Mary. It was a good reminder to stop striving and be still, lean on God and trust Him. "Stop and listen to the words of the One who created all this for your pleasure."

A wonderful read for fans of clean historical romances. Recommend for teens and up.

Nothing Short of Wondrous by Regina Scott tells of the beauty and wonder of Yellowstone Park in the 1880s. For sure, it would have been wonderful to see it in that era and Scott does a nice job with describing the beauty of the area.

In Nothing Short of Wondrous, Lieutenant William Prescott enlists the aid of local hotel owner Kate to help him navigate the park so he can better track down poachers and other troublemakers. Kate is a widow with a seven-year-old son who is doing her best to work hard and protect the park. They try to help each other.

There is a lot of good in this book but I was somewhat disappointed in Nothing Short of Wondrous. I struggled to get in to the story and enjoy the characters. The back of the book indicates that a big part of the plot is that Kate's son is kidnapped by a poacher who wants the boy to guide him. Will and Kate will then work together to rescue him. I kept waiting for this action to happen and it does not occur until the last few pages of the book. Since it was on the book jacket, I felt like that was rather misleading, which I don't think is the author's fault, but rather the publisher was a bit misleading in this case. Up until then, the plot was minimally interesting. Again, I did think the park description was quite nice. I do love the gorgeous cover. Scott also did a nice job of inserting spiritual aspects effortlessly in to the plot. I think those who enjoy historical fiction will enjoy it if they keep in mind that the plot isn't quite what the back of the book indicates in Nothing Short of Wondrous.

Nothing Short of Wondrous was an interesting story. I enjoyed the setting and thought the characters were realistic. Kate was a wonderful main character. She was strong and in charge of her life. I loved how she knew the land so well and wasn't afraid to protect it.

The romance was good. I thought the characters were well-matched and the ending was satisfying.

All in all, with romance, good characters, and a little danger, Nothing Short of Wondrous was a very nice read and one I think fans of historical romance will enjoy.

When I read the first book in this series from Regina Scott, I was whisked away to the past and the beginnings of our National Parks.  I had high hopes for this book as well and it did not disappoint.

As I've grown older, I have come to appreciate the history of our country and the various landmarks that surround us. I may not have visited many of them yet, but I enjoy reading about the various spots and little tidbits you may not have known. I have to give two thumbs up to Regina Scott for the amount of research she has done for these books. Many of the characters are actual people but how they are portrayed in the books is fictional.  With her description of Yellowstone, I can see it in my mind and can only imagine the beauty and the danger in this park. Yellowstone is definitely on my bucket list.

"You warned us when you took us around the first time. There are too many ways to die in Yellowstone."

"But only one way to live."

There is quite a variety of characters assembled in this book with multiple personalities to contend with on a daily basis. Kate has her staff at the hotel and the guests that visit Yellowstone to see the geysers. I admire the loyalty in her staff considering they are somewhat remote from town. But I think that has a lot to do with her treatment of them and considering them family. The guests for the most part are respectful, but bad manners abounded back much like it does today. Will is seeking a second chance to make up for events in the past that haunt him to this day. The servicemen assigned to his company seem like a good lot for the most part, but there is one that has his own past that he is running from and he seems to butt heads with Will a lot. But perhaps that helps them understand each other.

"I never knew what home felt like until I came here."

Home is where you feel at peace with your surroundings and the people around you. What Kate and Will find in each other is home and that includes Kate's son Danny. I love how he looks up to Will and has taken to him. Perhaps it is because he needs a strong male role model in his life. I think that is what Will needs as well, someone that he can guide and mold.

"It seemed God still wanted his heart. Joy bubbled up inside him like mud from a paint pot."

Faith plays an important role in this book, and perhaps it is really the lack of faith in themselves and others. It takes a while for Kate and Will to realize that there is more to life than their past and while it plays a significant role, it should not define who they become.

I truly loved this book and all aspects of the story and the setting. When Will revealed his past to Kate, it wasn't nearly as bad and he felt it was or how she might react. This is not revealed until near the end of the book and I do wish it had been discussed earlier but it keeps the reader guessing. There is a bit of a mystery regarding a poacher that is on the run from the calvary, but it wasn't hard to connect the dots when certain situations occur near the end.

If you enjoy history and our National Parks, you definitely want to check out this series. You won't regret it in the least.  We give this book 5 paws up.

I really, really enjoyed this novel. I liked the characters, I loved the setting, and I really enjoyed the plot. This book was such a lovely read and I cannot wait for the third one. I always love when books are set in National Parks, especially National Parks that I have been to.

Everything about this book was so well written. I felt like I was there with the characters the whole time due to Mrs. Scott's vivid descriptions of the setting and her wonderful descriptions of her characters. I saw a lot of myself in Kate. Although I am not as resilient as her, I really connected with her character. Mrs. Scott did a phenomenal job at showing how much Kate cared about Yellowstone, her son, her employees, the hotel, her customers, and her cavalry lieutenant. Speaking of cavalry lieutenant, let me just say that Will's character was so amazing. I loved watching him grow and become the man that we got to see in the end. I loved how much he cared for his men, Kate, and Danny. He and Kate were so cute, and honestly, you cannot help but root for them. They are just so amazing together.

The spiritual content in this book was good, there was not a whole lot of it, but the little that there was so perfect for this story. I really enjoyed this book a lot and I cannot wait to see where Mrs. Scott brings us next to her American Wonders series!

The basic premise of this novel is the love story of a young widow running a hotel in Yellowstone and a lieutenant stationed in the park to protect its natural wonders. The setting makes for a unique read with plenty of descriptions of the park and insights into the early years of the tourism there. In addition, I appreciated that the author gave Kate and Will time and opportunities to develop a believable relationship that went beyond initial attraction. However, I personally felt like the story could have been a bit shorter. I found myself skimming the last half. This may partly be because this book has a strong western vibe, which is a genre I don’t particularly enjoy. Also, the last few chapters were pretty heavily ‘Christian’ in the character development. Not necessarily a bad thing, just didn’t suit my mood.
Overall, if you like historical westerns with very likable characters and a beautifully described setting I would recommend giving this a read.

Yellowstone National Park 1886

The title says it all! Prepare to be transported back in time with wonderful descriptive prose that will make you feel as if you were there!

A story of the beginning of having the park under the supervision of the Calvary to stop the poachers and raiders of the wildlife. Kate is very happy as she runs a hotelier and is very familiar with the land.

This story is truly inspirational and watching two hearts who need each other come together. Love these stories~

This was a fun read! I felt transported to historical Yellowstone and like I was there along with Will, Kate and the rest of the characters that make up this story. A beautiful setting, a mystery and a romance work together to make this an interesting novel that I really enjoyed. Regina’s descriptions of Yellowstone were detailed and a perfect complement to the story. The story moved well and the romance was written as a very naturally developing romance that didn’t move too quickly which I appreciated.

3.5 stars. A lovely story of hope and second chances. I’ve never been to Yellowstone. This book sure makes me wish I had. The characters are wonderful and incredibly well portrayed. The story is a beautiful one with a strong faith and hope message...one of learning and growing. The scenic view that a God created is definitely the star of the book, and its beauty and treasures are well described.

A book I thoroughly enjoyed reading.

I love National Park history so most any book that has to do with that subject I get excited to read. This book started off pretty good. Of course the setting of Yellowstone is wonderful and I loved the peek into what it might have been like in 1886. I really struggled in loving the characters and that is what made this story simply not my favorite. I think the story line was okay but I just didn't love Kate or William. There are some great chapters that made me keep wanting to read what would happen next. I think if you enjoy National Parks you might enjoy this story.

I had the joy of going to Yellowstone this summer, and this was my chosen read to go with it. Except that I didn't get to the book until a few months late!

Nothing Short of Wondrous did not disappoint. I attended a workshop once in which the instructor stated that the setting can be a character, and at times this book made that argument. I also enjoyed Kate. And Will. Both have lived through grave events. Both are in need of redemption to some degree. And both are determined to protect the natural world and their fellow human beings.

First sentence: What was it about men and danger? Did they all want to die? Kate Tremaine leveled her rifle at the back of the stranger standing beside the rainbow-colored mud pots, a long, twisted branch in his hand. “Stop right there, mister. Drop the stick.” Broad shoulders stiffened in his navy cavalry coat. Normally she had the utmost respect for the military, especially after seeing how Captain Harris had worked to protect Yellowstone since arriving last month. But she’d caught more than one of the horse soldiers a mite too close to the boiling geysers and heated paint pots.

Premise/plot: Kate Tremaine is a widow raising a son in Yellowstone National Park. She's the keeper of the Geyser Gateway hotel. Her lease is up in the spring and she worries about the future...

Lt. Will Prescott has a trouble past but he is absolutely loving his new assignment at Yellowstone patrolling the park. He trades his handy skills for a personal tour guide of the region he'll be patrolling with his six men. It's a fair trade when all is said and done. And during this time, he becomes buddies with Danny, the widow's young son.

But both Kate and Will have reasons to be hesitant about acting on their mutual attraction for one another. Is he there for the long haul? Or is Yellowstone just a temporary assignment?

My thoughts: I really enjoyed this one!!! I thought it was a lovely historical romance. There were a few times I wanted to really yell at the book, because I guessed a plot point many, many chapters before the hero and heroine--but overall it was a good way to spend my time.

I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys historical romances OR to those with a particular interest in Yellowstone. (I went in 89 a few weeks before the big fire.)

Travelers Wife 4 Life

Nothing Short of Wondrous by Regina Scott really is nothing short of wondrous! I do not believe I have read anything by Regina Scott before, and now I am wondering how I missed her books! From the very first line:

“What is it about men and danger? Do they all want to die?"

Regina Scott weaves in a humorous sense of warmth and sarcasm that fully engaged my interest. She is one of the very few authors I have found that has a gift with the way they describe the world around them to make you feel like you are right there in the story. There were such vivid descriptions of Yellowstone National Park, from the colors, the landscape, the smells of the different pools… It was breathtaking, and I am sure the actual park is more so!

The characters. Kate is your classic frontier woman: strong and courageous.  She is well balanced though, always willing to let others help when she truly needed it. The banter between her and Will, the main male character is a “I don’t want to like you, but I do anyway” type of spark between them. Which is one of my favorites. Also, have you ever heard the saying “women love a man in uniform”? Well, this apply applies to Will in his Cavalry uniform. Talk about tall dark and handsome 😊. Regina Scott really made these characters come to life for me with their descriptions, realistic challenges, and their sense of humor.

"God understood she had work to do, a son to raise, a park to protect. Why did this man make her wonder if there should be more?"

I give Nothing Short of Wondrous 5 out 5 stars for the AMAZING descriptions of Yellowstone National Park, one of my favorite couples this year, and for engaging my imagination throughout the whole story! Regina Scott is definitely on my auto buy list now; readers who enjoy books by Karen Witemeyer, Mary Connealy, and Vickie McDonough will love this story!

I first found Regina Scott through her Regency novels, then followed her Wallin family series, and am now thoroughly enjoying this American Wonders Collection. The heroines are uncommon women making their way in a male-dominated world.

I liked Kate from the first pages, her determination to keep the park she loves safe from those who would harm it endeared her to me. I also appreciated her care for the people around her, children, guests, and even cavalrymen, preventing any and all from inadvertently getting themselves hurt, using persuasive methods ranging from pie to firearms.

Will is also a great character, and I loved his perspective on helping others succeed. He isn’t a perfect man, but he accepts responsibility and works within his limitations, even if he sometimes imposes a harsher penalty with further reaching consequences on himself than others do.

I really liked the spiritual thread within this novel, too. I could appreciate the reasons the main characters avoided God, the excuses they used to justify the distance, and the pain they caused themselves by persisting in wrong thinking. I also loved how Scott gently shows the reader their errors, allowing us to learn alongside Kate and Will.

This is a great book that is fun to read and carries some deep meaning, too. I highly recommend it for those who enjoy stories with strong female characters, strong male characters who aren’t threatened by those women, and for readers who enjoy uncovering spiritual truths along with a great storyline. I’m looking forward to the next in this series!

Regina Scott is releasing her second book in her American Wonders Collection. What is nice about this collection is that each one stands alone, but the connections to America's greatest treasures make them worth reading, in any order.

Nothing Short of Wondrous takes place in Yellowstone National Park, soon after the National Park system was enacted into law. Kate Tremaine runs the Gateway Inn, within the park. She provides rooms, meals, and some tours for people coming to enjoy the Park's particular beauty. She also protects her area of the park as well as the people who come to her Inn.

The Army is providing protection for the wildlife and the people, as well as rounding up poachers. However, the Army is not provided with guides to help them navigate the dangers of the park. Lt. William Prescott prevails upon Kate to help him get to know the landscape and the areas of the park she knows best. In return, he and some of his men will provide some much needed repairs to her Inn.

This book offers intrigue, romance, and incredible descriptions of natural beauty--something for nearly every reader. Five Stars, Two Thumbs Up, and a personal guide through the wonders of Yellowstone.

An engaging adventure, with captivating characters, bring to life the early days of Yellowstone National Park.

Yellowstone is my favorite National Park, so I was thrilled when I found out about this book, I added it to my TBR instantly. And this book does not disappoint, Kate Tremaine is a widow raising a young son, and one of the first hoteliers possessing a lease on the new National Park. She is happy to help the Calvary as they take control, flushing out poachers and troublemakers. I admired how capable and ready to tackle a challenge, Kate is. She is a master at keeping multiple plates spinning, and is an excellent mother to Danny.

Lt. William Prescott is haunted by his past, but determined to do his job well, but's hard to do when you don't know the lay of the land, so he asks Kate to help him. I loved how this book shows the wild beauty of Yellowstone, through the eyes of both Kate and Will, who make an excellent team.

Overall, a quick read, I enjoyed every minute of it and was sad to see it end. Danny is an adorable and intelligent child, and I loved every scene with him in it. An entertaining, engaging read with strong themes of forgiveness, faith, family, and new beginnings set against the stunning Wyoming sky.

I found it interesting to read a story in the Yellowstone National Park in the early days of America's settlement of the area. The strife to keep the park pristine and free of man's disruptive behavior was also interesting. I am glad for the early days when people realized the importance of caring for the natural wonders, geysers, bubbling steam and Sulphur pots, amazing forest, and the Buffalo or Bison who had already been so depleted.
I found the story slow paced. The characters simply didn't grasp my attention but neither was there a true fault in the author's development of them. Simply, didn't engage me a lot.

The boy, Danny, was the exception. Who couldn't love this boy?

I finished the book and can recommend it as a good, gentle read and it is especially one that would interest anyone who has visited the park area or who has an interest in nature preservation.
