More than seventy years have passed since Neirin du Lac was banished from the dragon clans he called home. Though he misses them, he and his dragon Troyes have built a happy life with his lover Barra, and their friends Devlin and Midnight. It is a not a life he would ever trade, not even for a chance to return to the clans.

Then the very last person he ever expected to see again comes begging for help: Prince Avalon Pendragon, ruler of the clans, a man Neirin once called friend, once wished to call lover. When Avalon tells him why he needs Neirin's help, it's not a request he can refuse, nor can his friends refuse to help him.

But the people bold enough to steal from the clans are not to be trifled with, and in the midst of fighting for their lives Neirin also finds himself caught between the man he loves now and the man he never truly left behind...

I received an ARC of Twilight from the author Megan Derr. Dance with the Devil, the first in the eponymous series, was the second book of Derr’s I ever read in 2011 and it cemented my love for the series and the author’s writing. What appeals to me about the series is the way it combines many fantasy elements with Derr’s own take on the tropes, including vampires, the fae, the Arthurian legend, et al. In Twilight, the twist on the Arthurian legend was one that brought in another strand of the many plotlines present in the series and a huge surprise for me. There were exciting battles against the magic evildoers and unlikely alliances. The Victorian-like setting just adds to the fun. I also enjoy the author’s refreshingly open approach to sexuality. Derr understands Wilde’s dictum on fiction: The good ended happily, and the bad unhappily. A great continuation of an excellent series.

Still entertaining read. I liked how it answered a number of questions from the previous book while also giving us an update on Midnight and Devlin.

4.5 Stars

Highly entertaining. Avalon was a great addition as well as his dragon Caliburn.
I really liked how the story tied in with the previous books, going back in time to from the previous books, I though the way the story unfolded and answered underlying questions from the previous books, very well done.
I enjoyed the take on the King Arthur legend and as always the dragons were a major plus.

Banished knight, Neirin du Lac, is happy with his partners, his dragon Troyes and the wolf-elf, Barra. But when Avalon, and his Pendragon ask for their help in recovering the egg of a holy Pendragon that has been stolen it all becomes more than a little complicated. Barra is convinced Neirin will leave him for Avalon, but at the same time is himself attracted to him.

With the help of Devlin and Midnight they battle their way through ambushes, abductions and fights to recover the baby/dragon.

With revelations from Sable Brennus regarding Avalon's parentage and his link to Neirin and Barra the two knights, wolf elf and two dragons finally find a relationship that works.

I really enjoyed this latest instalment of the series. Though a great deal of that is due to the wonderfully snarky relationship between Devlin and Midnight (well Devlin and just about anyone that annoys him). I do like the way the dragons are drawn in these books and was pleased that the five got their relationship sorted. It was also nice to see Sable before he meets Chris.

Only downside was the number of small typos that should have been picked up in editing.

While I really enjoy the series characters and life changes, timelines don't synchronize.

Shield of the Dragon left us with Devlin, Midnight, Neirin anf Barra already reconciled with Avalon, Neirin and Barra firmly entrenched as Prince Avalon's High Steward and Senechal, respectively. Twilight begins with Neirin and Troyes still mourning being separated from Avalon and Clan Pendragon, even after many, many decades. Devlin very strongly loathes Avalon and the Clans for banishing and nearly killing Neirin at the time, although Avalon purposely had Neirin's beaten body where Barra would be sure to discover it. We learn Avalon has the gift of magic, and ways to watch over Neirin, which, in truth, is basically stalking in secret.

Anyway, we literally have the backstory of how Devlin and Midnight end up becoming honorary Clan Pendragon members and residents, as well as how Neirin got himself unbanished, then shacked up with both Avalon and his wolfelf with Holy Pendragon Caliburn and Troyes, Neirin's knight dragon, happily rounding out their numbers for snuggles and sexy times. One great talent of Ms. Derr is her skill in drawing out the intense drama, intrigue/suspense, and often grisly encounters with their dastardly enemies. The kidnapping of a Holy Pendragon baby is at the heart of the murders and cross country chases, fights with werewolves and mages, and the puzzle they must unravel to learn exactly who and what they are up against. Aside from my initial confusion and slight irritation at reading the filled-in details of the summary we caught at the end of Shield of the Dragon, I did like the book. I didn't love it, as it was rather violent, and I've never taken to Barra (just don't like him, though I love everyone else). I'd like to believe the plot would have been less annoying, with fewer obstacles, had there been only Neirin, Devlin, and Midnight, and Neirin would have reunited with Avalon much sooner without Barra as an added complication. Yes, the character worked into the plot to give Neirin the excuse to disobey the rule (law?) of getting involved with a wolfelf in the first place, and, he adds extenuating issues to their rescue as well as kidnapping attempts. Aarrgh! They simply don't fit! Beautiful, blonde Neirin is a perfect foil and contrast to tall, dark and gorgeous Prince Avalon! Barra is cute. Maybe a little pretty. Never has he been considered beautiful. He. Doesn't. Fit. In. However, it's my opinion only. So, this one gets three and a half stars.

3.3 stars. I have mixed feelings about this one, though the synopsis had prepared me for it. I enjoyed seeing Devlin and Midnight again, but I felt a bit let down by their adventures, which did not grip my attention as usual. And the polyamorous dimension felt forced, especially Overall, the story had its entertaining moments, yet is not among my favourites from Megan Derr.

As we all know, this set of characters is not my favorite, or even second-favorite, in this series, and to be honest, I spent a lot of the book confused about where in the chronology of the others it fits (because I didn't reread any of them before reading this): to clear it up, it's after the other one about Midnight and Devlin, but before the later stuff with the pit dragons. It seems to be set around 1900 or so, maybe? So also before all the ones about Chris or (my forever favorite beloved-est) Johnnie.

Also, I still don't like the dragons, and that is totally down to personal preference, so if you like Derr's dragons, you will like this. I think they're creepy, sorry.

So, that aside, I did like this book. The story was fun. I *really* enjoyed the reveal about Prince Avalon.

Obviously, if you like this series, read this.

And again I got lost in the world of Dragons and Knights.

A great read full of mystery excitement and love.

I'm not really a fan of threesomes and more but in this series it works for me. I'm happy Avalon got to join Neirin and Barra.

The dragons as usual stole my heart. I certainly would love to see just how Caliburn and Troyes get on :P

I really hope there are more in this series, especially the baby pendragons story. I would absolutely love watching him grow up with his Prince.

ETA despite this one having more sex than others I still enjoyed reacquainting myself with Neirin and co.

ETA Still pretty much the same but the sex got really boring lol.

It's been a few years since my first read of this book and I barely remembered it. I was skeptical about Avalon but it turned out he's a great fit for Neirin and Barra. I'm getting a little tired with the "nobody could ever love me" trope, there's only so many ways it can be done before growing old (or maybe I just read too many books with the trope in a row?)
But what excited me most (that I also managed to forget since my last read) was .
I'm looking forward to reading the final book in the series, where we'll see Sable and Chris again! <3

Ok. I am a die-hard fan of this author, and of this series. Here, we see our lovely draugr/bitchy-witch and lovely wolf-elf trio, accompanied by a fallen night, get embroiled in the problems of the clans. I honestly did not expect to love Avalon and Caliburn as much as I did...Not wait, that's a lie. I'm in adoration of all Megan Derr's dragons. I did not expect to like Avalon. There. But I did. And though I was a bit sad at the end, it was not the heartbreak I thought it would be .
I remember reading that this was going to be the series finale, and I am terribly sad of it. All I hope for is that we see more dragons from her. I can never have enough of the lazy cats.
So there is action, romance and pinning, so much pinning. And a sexy dragon, a charmed sword pendant and a bitchy witch with a draugr who loves his Heartbeat. If it is the finale, it could not have been better.
Hat's off Megan Derr, you pulled it off again.
Now I'm going to go and read it again and cry a little.

4.75 stars. This one's in three POV sections, and while I didn't like the second POV, the overall story's good to can't-put-it-down. Not sure what more anyone wants of a novel than that. This is not at all a standalone type of series, hasn't been for several books.

On to the last book.

4.5* Review written for Love Bytes Reviews.

I’ve pretty much loved everything I’ve ever read by this Author but I have to say that this series in particular is one of my favorites. With a wide variety of characters and situations, all of the stories are imaginative and entertaining; I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve reread various stories in this universe when in need of a comfort read. While the books are mostly released out of order and at various points on the overall series timeline, its easy to see where the books intersect and I’ve always loved getting new information about older characters that I’ve come to adore. It also means that you don’t necessarily have to have read the entire series in order to pick a single book up and enjoy it.

Chronologically, Twilight takes place about 70 years after the end of Midnight so while you don’t need to read the rest of the series, I would recommend you at least be familiar with that story so you have some understanding of the characters and situation that feature in this latest installment. The book was split up into three sections and is told from the point of view of a different character for each: Neirin, Barra and Avalon. Neirin is one of those characters that I didn’t like in the beginning but ultimately came to enjoy; I didn’t really get his connection with Barra at first but it was really easy to see how much they cared for each other this time around.

Barra, a secondary character in Midnight, was by far my favorite person in this entire book; he’s grown up and matured a great deal from the shy wallflower he was before and I loved seeing how much he’s changed. I also found his desire to see everyone around him happy despite his own anguish to be the best indicator of the type of person he is. I was seriously full of all the feels for Barra in this book. Avalon was the surprise for me; you don’t see him much at all previously so I enjoyed the chance to get to know him here; his story was the completely unexpected part of the book for me but I absolutely loved how the author connected him back to Sable from the first book in the series, Dance with the Devil.

The story itself was great and I was kept totally engrossed in what was going on but the characters were what really kept me glued to my kindle. Everyone got their all important happy ending and I’m still mentally going over the new connections made between this book and some of the others. If you enjoy paranormal stories, I seriously can’t recommend both this book and the overall series enough; I read the entire thing multiple times a year and enjoy it every time.

⚔️ What makes Twilight sing isn’t the grand battle or political stakes (though they’re there), but the way Megan Derr lets love creep in sideways. A glance. A kiss. A wolf-elf who refuses to let go. A knight who sees beyond the mask. A dragon who’s never once left his side

👑 Avalon is perhaps the loneliest character I’ve read in a long time. A creature born of arrogance, shaped by centuries of isolation, and soaked in guilt for sins that weren’t even his own. A prince bound to a territory he never asked for, the product of a violation no one dares speak of, and carrying the weight of a curse that destroyed his family. His siblings hated him. His lovers pitied him. Even he couldn’t fully name what he longed for (only that he was too much, too strange, too cursed to ever be loved). And the world-his own family-did nothing to tell him otherwise. Everyone else left. Everyone else resented him. Everyone else treated him like a burden or a mistake

🐉 Caliburn is his only constant - his dragon, his eternal companion, the one creature who has never left and never will. Their bond is one of the most beautiful things in this entire book. Their banter, their warmth, the fierce way Caliburn advocates for Avalon even when Avalon won’t fight for himself - it’s everything. It’s love without conditions.

🐺 Barra is sunshine and chaos and flirtation and heart. He’s protective and brave and openly adores the people he loves. And Neirin - oh, Neirin is all steel and loyalty and longing. The two of them are such a unit that you’d think there wouldn’t be room for someone like Avalon - too ancient, too broken, too tangled up in old magic and cursed history. But that’s the beauty of it.

Because Avalon doesn’t ask them to stay. He tries to push them away, certain that it’s better for everyone if he disappears back into the loneliness he knows. But they refuse to let him. They come back. They stay. And slowly, painfully, he lets himself believe they mean it.

This book is haunted by grief and old wounds, by the ghosts of family and failed love. But it’s also full of quiet devotion. Of people who see each other - truly see - and choose to stay anyway. It’s about finding a home not just in a place, but in someone’s arms. And sometimes, in the two people who feel like home.

❤️ It’s a quietly defiant book. Full of pain and tenderness. Full of characters who love fiercely and flawed, and who choose each other again and again. It’s also gorgeously queer and deeply emotional in that way Megan Derr does so well-where magic and heartbreak walk hand in hand.

🖤 Should have read them in order
Also: I now need to go back and read Devlin and Midnight’s story.

I thought this addition to the series not as good as previous ones. The writing was a bit lazy and world building very sloppy. And as usual for this author, no one gave this book a final perusal to identify misspellings and punctuation errors. An average effort at best.

More like 3.5

Story wise, I enjoyed it. Character wise? Kind of insufferable. I understand that Avalon had struggles with lovers in the past, but he spent the last half of the book wining about why he couldn't have what he wanted. Not to mention once we found out more about his lineage. And Barra! I love his character generally speaking, but my GOD the jealousy had me rolling my eyes so hard I could see the back of my head. At the same time, I understood him because I also have no confidence that someone would always choose me if a choice had to be made. And it's one of my characteristics I absolutely cannot stand. I think of all the characters, through all 7 books thus far, Midnight has to be my favorite. He's definitely the most level headed, and I think he's funny. I'd say he's the most memorable as well. I never had to struggle to remember who he was.

One of the biggest turn offs in this particular book, though, had to be the author using unnecessarily fancy words that could have conveyed a message just as well as its simplistic counterpart. I'm all for language being used, it means I can maybe learn some new vocab I could add to my own writing, but she's never gone out of her way to complicate things before and I have read a great many of her works by now. Close to twenty by now. Sometimes a fancy word will ruin the flow of text and that's how I feel some of her word choices ended up.

My other big gripe with this book was definitely editing. There were less small mistakes this time around, but at one point she seems to entirely forget that one of her characters in a scene had stormed off to be alone because he was irritated with Avalon, and in the next it's as though they're communicating in the same room moments before stripping their clothes and having angry makeup sex. For me that's a huge thing because character A was just mad at character B and wanted alone time but now suddenly that information is irrelevant because we needed to throw in even more sex? Which is another thing. I'm all for reading X Rated fun, that's how I ended up down this rabbit hole, but these last two books, maybe even three, felt excessive. Even day to day interactions were inundated with kisses and or spicy thoughts that 9 times out of 10 led directly to spicy times. There is such a thing as too much and for me, this books sort of hit that limit and surpassed it. Also I'm getting tired of her favorite euphemism for male genitals. There's a plethora of options to choose from.

Overall, I LIKE her books, and her writing style. While this review may seem scathing, it's only because I nitpicked more than I usually would. Her style is great, her stories are fun, and I like her characters as a whole. I'm glad that Sable didn't turn out to be an actual bad guy because that would've made me sad.

Review for BookWinked

Tell us about Twilight
Twilight is the 7th instalment in the Dance with the Devil series set in a dangerous world of paranormals and in different era’s. In Twilight we see some of the characters we saw in the earlier books, particular Midnight (Twilight is set around 70 years after Midnight), and also Shield of the Dragon. In fact, reading Shield of the Dragon only wetted my appetite for this book. I’d hoped we would see a story around Avalon and Caliburn.

With Twilight, a few of the questions about the series come together and it was very nicely done too. One thing in particular I didn’t see coming.

What is the story about?
In Twilight it’s back to the motley crew we met in Midnight. It was nice to see Neirin, Barra, Troyes, Midnight and Devlin again. Of course, they are up to no good and getting into trouble in no time. This time Avalon in Caliburn are thrown in the mix with the theft of a Holy Pendragon, a theft that sets in motion a host of events and some that seem inevitable.

I won’t say a lot about what the plot is about, you have to read it and experience the adventures of this motley and unlikely band of friends for your own. I will say that you won’t be disappointed. Especially by Caliburn. He’s fascinating.

What are your thoughts on Twilight?
Twilight is a book worth reading. It’s heavy on the adventure. The book is split in three parts, each focussing on a different character and carrying a different aspect of the plot. This makes it so you get the story from different points of view.

A lot happens in the story and it’s prudent you’ve read the other stories in the series or some of the plot, but also the little details and nuance will be lost.

The book is first an action/adventure/mystery first and a romance second. There is the established one between Barra, Neirin and Troyes and Avalon and Caliburn second, though the two get mixed up as well as their dragons. I loved how the dragon culture is mixed up in everything. It was wonderfully done. It’s a lovely twist on the Arthurian legends, though it’s confusing when Avalon is a person and not a place!

The story and world-building are awesome. There are battles against some rotten characters, betrayal, magic, paranormals, demons and mysteries.

There are also possible hints for future stories, which I really really hope there will be, because this series has the best dragon stories ever. I know, this really is not a very objective review!

My only real complaint about this story was that it ended waaaaaaaay before I was ready!

How is the writing?
The writing is as always typically Megan Derr and it fits the story beautifully. The only thing that was confusing sometimes was the way the telepathic dialogue (there’s something you never thought I’d say) between Caliburn and Avalon. But that was more the way it was formatted than the way it was written. But as this is an ARC, it’s not the final version.

How do you rate this story?
With 5 stars

LOVE LOVE LOVE these characters! I am so happy we got a chance to revisit Devlin, Midnight, Barra, Neirin and Troyes and now the addition of Avalon and Caliburn. So well written and very engaging, not just the love story but the mystery of the Holy Pendragon as well. The world-building here continues to be exquisite, from Camelot to London, and the various places they visit. The characters and world were incredibly vivid and well drawn.

I haven't read all of the books in this series but the appearance of Sable was so compelling it led me to immediately purchase Dance with the Devil to get the scoop on Chris and his Demon Lord, Sable Brennus. I second the call for a potential tie in story! I for one would LOVE to see Devlin meet what seems to be his very similar nephew. I ached for Devlin that no one came around when it appeared he was in trouble and I would love to see him rediscover his American family ties. Here's a question, what happened to the Demon Lord of London? He spoke at the funeral but couldn't be bothered to check on his friend? That part really bothered me on Devlin's behalf.

Devlin I simply love due to his propensity to say the words "buggering fuck". I love that, love him and adore that the characters, from him to Barra to Troyes, are so well drawn and distinct. Even Caliburn has his own "feel" that was distinct from other dragons. I could have done with more Midnight but I understand that this book was really for Barra, Neirin and Avalon. I was enthralled with their story as well!

A few niggles, we're never told why Devlin and Midnight are at Stonehenge? That bugged me for some reason. Also, the frequency of tears in the first 40% or so got a little out of hand, Neirin alone burst into tears what must have been more than a half a dozen times. And he wasn't the only one, it's not so much that it tossed me out of the story, this is still a solid 5 star read, it's just struck me how often tears were spilled. Again, just niggles and not detrimental to the overall story at all. 5 enthusiastic stars!!!

I received an ARC of this story from the publisher in exchange for a fair, unbiased review.

Series: Dance With The Devil #7

ARC PROVIDED BY AUTHOR

The World in which this series lives is my type of fantasy. Most types of paranormal creatures can be found this world and the author manages to add in her own version of things. Hers is not the typical story of werewolf or vampire or any other I normally see on movies or read on other books (Though they are not that many to compare with.) And it's always nice to read something that doesn't necessarily follow stereotypes.

Adding a Dragon into the mix and twisting the legend of Arthur and the Knights to blend into this particular world is fascinating as its fierce and lovely Dragons.

The story was well written, the Characters amazing in their own way. The three of them just fit. Though it was a little sad Neirin has to go through all of those but also a necessary journey. The connection between them doesn't seem forced especially between Barra and Avalon as they are stranger to each other — or maybe only Barra.

It was Nice to finally read the story of the once banished knight, the wolf-elf and the Prince.

The appearance also of Devlin and Midnight adds light to the story, (now I know the history of his rune gloves.)

Done. All seven finally finished. I liked how the story is split into three parts, Neirin, Barra and Ava. Gonna say this story wouldn’t have gone anywhere without Caliburn and Midnight. Plenty of jealousy, resignation and smut. Devlin and Midnight have grown on me in this one and the end of the last one. Neirin was pretty much devoted but clueless, Barra was insecure but selfless and Ava was broken, lonely and had his own secrets.

After reading them all, I’d say favourite to least 2,6,4,7,5,1 and 3. As much as I like the multi pairings, it feels like there’s more depth to Johnnie and Grim’s story, Jackie and Ned pretty much changed the entire concept of the series. Whilst Ken and Amr had a balance between the two and had the multi smut. I’ll probably re-read them all and change my mind at a later date.

I have to admit it has been a while since I read this series so it was almost like going into the series blind. It really makes me want to go back and read the series again. That being said I still enjoyed to rather different take on the Arthurian legend. It is interesting to watch Barra, Neirin, and Avalon deal with their various relationships. They do spend alot of the book with hurt feelings and misunderstandings but in the end there is a happily-ever-after that I can cheer for. The dragons also make a unique dynamic between all of them.

MM paranormal romance with dragons, wizards, demons, and other mythical creatures. Some familiar characters from earlier in the series facing off against heinous villains. A bit of romance, but altogether too much graphic sex.
Typos: A great many words were misused, as usual. Route for rout, now for know, sleep for asleep, drips and drabs for dribs and drabs, loathe (verb) for loath (adj.), run gloves for rune gloves, flare for flair. Also, there was too much repetition for my taste, as if no one had reviewed the end product to check for that.

Fantasy was my first love, so I always like getting to read books which combine Fantasy and M/M. Editing issues aside, Megan Derr is one of my favorites. I dig this series, because, ya know, dragons, but the way the stories hop all around the timeline makes it a little hard to keep everything straight in my head. Maybe at some point I'll go back to the beginning and see how these later revelations match up with the earlier books.

I have to say it's kinda hard to decide how to rate this story. I liked it, I really really did, but still there were things that for the length of the book they should have had a better conclusion?

Maybe because I'm an angst whore from the 3 POVs I liked Barra's best, Neirin's and Avalon's seemed more like woe is me and as Barra said too much of "I'll suffer for the good of the ones I love".

In the end the thing I missed most was to see Avalon and Caliburn truly connecting with Barra. Neirin's and Avalon's relationship was discussed throughout the story but I would have liked to see something more between Avalon and Barra than the scene at the end.

Also because I'm a perv I sooooo wanted to see Barra been taken hard by Caliburn and Troyes and the fact that the scene played as porn in the background while Neirin fucked Avalon was a disappointment.

Nevertheless I hope that this story isn't the end of the series since along the way alot of characters were introduced that lived in "exile" and I'm curious about their stories (funnily enough 90% were vampires).
