In this sizzling and suspenseful Operation Mayhem novel by USA Today Bestselling author, a soldier betrayed falls for the doctor who changed him.
He’s searching for revenge. She’s searching for redemption. The answer to their dilemma lies in each other…
Dr. Melissa Averton devoted her life to saving Team Mayhem. Living with the guilt that she’d helped create the serum that had not only enhanced their abilities, but tied them to a life of pain. She practically lived in her lab, testing and researching, spending every waking hour trying to undo the damage.
John Dawson lived for revenge. His team had abandoned him, left in the hands of General Rainier to die. But he hadn’t died – he’d survived and thrived under the guidance of the General. Surrendering under the guise of needing his Team’s help, he infiltrated their secret lair, turning himself over for voluntary 24-hour observation. He’d play nice, pretend he was back and then…
The best laid plans.
Dawson didn’t count on the very sexy doctor monitoring him morning, noon and night. Poking. Prodding. Invading his dreams. Turning his plans inside out. His instinct to kill morphed into an undeniable need to protect and possess.
Melissa took one look at him and knew he needed her. Her heart beat fast. Her hands shook. She knew he was dangerous. The men of Mayhem had warned her. All her logic and all the evidence told her that Dawson was unsavable, but…this time she couldn’t rely on her brain, her heart was taking over.
Time was running out. She had to convince Dawson to trust not only his Team, but himself. Dawson had to see the truth, before he loses the one woman who can save him.

An avid reader since childhood, reading and writing is in her blood. After years of reading, she discovered her true passion – writing. Her alpha military men are damaged, drop-dead gorgeous and determined to win the heart of the woman of their dreams.
Not as good as the previous books. It was a little all over the place and didn't have the same feel as the other books. After the ending in previous book I was kinda expecting a MFM, but no. Dr. Melissa just fell for Dawson or John or Dawson or John...I wish she would just pick one name and call him that. Now are there going to be more books cause Juarez and Quantum and still single.
Each book in this series has built off the last as the story arc moved Team Mayhem ever closer to finding the truth. Melissa worked feverishly to keep the team members healthy, atoning for her part in the situation they found themselves. She had to find a solution or they would die and the clock was ticking. John was a betrayer in their eyes yet in his mind, they were the ones who abandoned him…
The tension was ever present as this time the imminent danger was not in the form of a gun or a knife. They needed a miracle and that would rely on Melissa's dedication and the trust that didn’t exist anymore between John and his former brothers in arm. It was heartbreaking to see John struggle through memories that divided him from his team mates, his family, and his little girl. Melissa was his champion though and she wasn’t going to see him lost, to the enemy or to himself…
It was tense, it was steamy and it all culminated in an ending that reminded me why this was a military romance. Be prepared for anything…
Mayhem’s Betrayal by Lindsay Cross Operation Mayhem #5
Another wonderful addition to this series about battle scarred warriors with enhanced abilities brought on by what could easily have been lethal experimentation carried out under the orders of General Rainier. Throughout the series I have wanted each of the men to find a way through the madness and mayhem, find their true love and eventually find a happily ever after with a much more normal life than they had been handed by the military. I have wondered how it would all work out and IF it could work out for all of the men.
In this book we hear about John Dawson who had been considered dead by his team when they managed to escape from the lab they were being held in. John thought he had been abandoned by his team. When the story begins up he has been held by his team in a cell and has been receiving the serum that keeps him alive as he is slowly on his way to dying. Enter Dr. Melissa Averton, scientist in charge of keeping Mayhem’s warriors from dying as she looks for a cure that will allow them to be “normal” again – or at least not need frequent shots to stay alive.
John and Melissa are definitely drawn to one another BUT is it real or fake? Can the team ever trust John again? Can John trust the men? What will happen with John’s daughter Faith? Will Rainier be taken down in this book or will it take another? And, will there be another book for Juarez? Also...we didn’t hear for sure whether or not the “cure” is 100% effective for all of the men. So, I am guessing there MIGHT be another book in this series...maybe...and there might be a romance for Juarez...don’t think he has found his HEA yet but think the rest of the team has.
Did I enjoy this book? Yes Would I read more in this series/by this author? Yes Should you read the previous books first? I would recommend you do
Thank you to the author for the ARC – This is my honest review.
We've been on tenterhooks since the last book. John surrendered to the team after almost killing his daughter. But is he really a doting father dealing with a traumatic brain injury and brainwashing at the hands of Rainier? Or is he a plant to get the inside scoop on Rainiers original supersoldiers?
John was always going to be the hardest hero to understand, mainly because he really doesn't know himself what the truth is. He believes he was discarded by his team but as time passes in the Mayhem Mansion bunker, he finds himself wondering more and more about what the truth is. Add in his weirdly intense bond with Quantum, which neither of them can really understand.
Melissa is a woman on a mission to cure the Mayhem men. She feels intensely to blame for their condition but she was duped by Rainier just as much as they were. But can running herself ragged to find a cure really be her best course of action?
I'm dreading this series ending cos it's been a brilliantly original concept. Melissa and John should be all wrong for each other but they work. There are layers upon layers in the story, finding out who is pulling the wool over whose eyes and what are their true motivations. One shining certainty is John's love for his daughter, even when you think he's at his lowest, that burns brightly.
John Dawson had been thought to be dead when his team escaped from the nightmare of Rainier’s lab so he had been left behind to be turned into a monster of a killing machine. After being captured by his team at the end of the last book he is now held captive by them at their compound. He has so much anger and mistrust of his former teammates and they in equal measure do not trust him so he remains locked up in his cell and needing increasing amounts of serum to stay alive.
Dr Melissa Averton continues to work desperately to find a cure for the men and her dedication calls to Dawson as he watches her from his cell. Her nearness calms him and makes him finally want to reach out to his former teammates and brothers.
The book is about the rebuilding of trust amid the search for a cure to save the mens lives and the ongoing fight to end the nefarious plans of Rainier to turn men into super strong killing machines to be sold to the highest bidder.
The series is best read in order but so worth the time to read all of the books that came before. Always well written and held my attention from start to finish. Really looking forward to what Lindsay writes next.
I received this book as a free ARC and this review is my personal opinion of the book.
John feels betrayed by the men he considered his brothers when they leave him to face his fate alone but they didn’t believe that he was alive and that searching for him would have deadly consequences for them all. His mission of vengeance finds him being held captive with the only ray of hope and light in his life being Melissa.
Melissa has nothing but guilt and regrets about what has transpired as what she thought was a way of helping others couldn’t have been further from the truth. When all her attempts to help John don’t seem to be enough will they be able to find the answers they need before it is too late?
Melissa is drawn to John and even though she knows about his past she refuses to believe he would ever hurt her and the love that she and John feel for each other may just be enough to mend the divide between him and the rest of the team.
John Dawson was the man left behind but it was because his team thought him dead and weren't able to get his body out. While he feels betrayed and left his team feels sick and would never had left him behind if that had been an option. However, after he attacks them at their place and blinds his best friend the team has to wonder did their friend betray them? This is Dawson's story and in this book the answer of who betrayed who will be found.
While he's been with the team he's gets a front row seat to Dr. Melissa Averton and her work in the lab but what he notices is that while she takes care of everyone else no one, lest of all her, is taking care of her.
He fell for Melissa the first time he saw her but she doesn't know. What she does know is that Dawson isn't doing as well as the other members of the team and she's afraid she'll lose him. Maybe just not as much as a patient but as the man, who clearly seems to be connected in some way with her. After all, he seems to be able to read her mind.
Read this book as we follow John, Melissa, Faith (his little girl), and the team members and see if they can find their way to each other before it's too late
I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I absolutely loved this story! It’s raw, gritty and emotional! John and Melissa’s story is full of so many twists and turns. This is a story of betrayal. Betrayal so deep that it can’t be overcome. Or can it? What the mind perceives may not be what is true in reality. This story had me on the edge of seat the entire book! I wasn’t sure what was going to happen with each turn of the page. I was definitely cheering for John to see the truth and for Melissa to find some happiness. But can they see past the past to figure out the future? Great book!!
Wow! This had me on the edge of my seat, I just could not put it down! As with the previous books there’s action, danger, suspense and let’s not forget love! This is John and Melissa’s story and it’s @ fab addition to this series. Totally on a rollercoaster of emotions, betrayal, anger and revenge, will they get a hea? I recommend that you start with book one and find out, it will be so worth it!
I loved this book and couldn’t stop reading. Dr. Melissa Averton has really dedicated all her time to find a cure for the team Mayhem. But she finds herself falling for John Dawson. Can they trust him? He thinks his team abandoned him. I didn’t expect to cry as hard as I did, loved being so emotionally connected. Can she find a cure in time? Loved staying on edge. Thankfully there’s a happy ever after. I voluntarily read an advanced readers copy and I highly recommend this book. Each book in this series is addicting, I just didn’t want to stop reading.
Lindsay Cross brings to you a new Military Romance, with enough heat to melt your Kindle, and enough emotion to melt your heart. Don't miss John Dawson, and Melissa's romance, and the story of the men of Mayhem. This is a must read, with Five Golden Stars!!!
I loved this book!! We get more answers, and Melissa finally gets her story. The whole story was very fluid, lots of action, angst, sexiness, and emotion.
Mayhem's Betrayal is another great read from the talented Lindsay Cross this is a story with suspense, danger and action with some love. The characters are John Dawson a soldier who feels betrayed by his team and is after revenge, then there is Dr. Melissa Averton who feels guilty for her part in creating the serum that has brought only pain to these strong soldiers, she has devoted her life to saving Team Mayhem has she finally found a way to save them all. This was a story that definitely captured my heart and It was hard to put down. I would love to say more about this book but don't want to give too much away. In my opinion this is a must read and definitely one book you won't want to miss. I absolutely loved Mayhem's Betrayal and I highly recommend it.
I received an ARC copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest opinion.
John feels his team left him to die while his team thinks he turned on them and sided with their enemy. He has been brought back to the Mayhem Compound(it's really a Mansion) but is really being held more as a prisoner as the team wants to know what the General is up to. He has other problems though, the last injection the General gave him almost killed him and he is now having serious medical issues such as seizures and migraines.
Melissa is a Scientist and all she wants to do is develop a remedy to help these Men of Mayhem lead normal lives again. They didn't ask to be experimented on, to be turned into Super Soldiers. She is so dedicated but working on the Serum and taking care of John is really putting her on edge. If she doesn't figure something out, he may die.
Melissa has had a few relationships but nothing really serious. Men always thought of her as a Brain, not a woman. Since John's room is located off her lab they do interact quite a bit, plus she has to be able to monitor him. John thinks she is as beautiful as she is smart. They are very attracted to one another.
Will Melissa find a Serum to help the men and save John? Will the Men of Mayhem ever be able to trust each other again? Will John and Melissa ever be together? Will the General finally be stopped?
I loved this story! As soon as I started reading it, it drew me right in. It is part of a series but can be read as a standalone story. Enough backstory is given so the reader doesn't feel like they walked into the middle of a story.
Ms Cross is such a good writer. Her story just flows, the characters are well developed. The true test of a writer is when you can feel the characters happiness, sorrow and anguish!
The ending had several twists and turns and I couldn't read fast enough! This book is awesome and I recommend.
Dr. Melissa Averton has been relentlessly and tirelessly attempting to find a solution for the soldiers of Team Mayhem. All the men depend on a serum which she helped create to make super soldiers. The big brawny men can be intimidating but Melissa feels nothing toward any of them except John Dawson. Melissa is drawn to him and can’t help her attraction to him either; even though she has been warned that John is dangerous not only to her but the entire team. John also desires Melissa but feels betrayed by everyone and questions Melissa’s ability to care for him. As Melissa gets closer to the cure her lust for him could ruin everything. John holds many secrets worst of all was the bodyguard to General Rainier who wants to find and destroy all of them. Will John finally admit his love for Melissa and betray his team to the enemy or will the secrets prove deadly to them. What an amazing contemporary romance with a bit of paranormal thrown in. Still the story is pretty believable and is written true to life even with the fantasy of making these soldiers and keeping them that way with a magical serum. The story is so full of action and manages to enthrall you until the very end. It can even stand alone but you might want to read the others in the series just to know the rest of the team. The characters whether they be major or minor are just delightful and engaging. Melissa the ultra serious no-nonsense doctor is just a great heroine; she’s intelligent but down to earth and doesn’t appear to be degrading to anyone even with her brains. John the brooding handsome alpha male is pretty tortured but manages to be likable that even with everything he feels and has many secrets he is makes a intriguing somewhat bad boy book boyfriend. This is a fantastic book that will be a great reread!
Mayhem's Betrayal is the fifth book in the Operation Mayhem series. I do recommend starting at the beginning. As a standalone, some back story will be lost and make this confusing.
John was captured at the end of book four after trying to kill his own team, who he believes left him behind in the hands of their enemy. Rainier messed with his body and his mind to poison him against his former team and make him forget his own family.
Melissa is still working as close to 24/7 as she can to find a cure for the men who have been altered to "super soldiers" by Operation Mayhem. In the meantime, she keeps making more of the serum they need injected weekly to survive. John is needing his injection daily and his body is deteriorating faster.
John's prison cell is near Melissa's work lab in the basement of the super secure mansion they are living in. Over time they talk and begin to trust each other. Finding themselves attracted to each other but unable to act on it. John keeps encouraging Melissa to eat and take care of herself. He starts sharing his meals with her and won't eat unless she does too. They share a bond and another soldier, Quantum shares a mental connection with John also.
The race is on to find the cure and stop Rainier who started a new lab and made new Russian super soldiers even stronger and less emotional than the Operation Mayhem team. Who will make it out alive and will there be a cure for these men so they can lead a "normal" life?
This book takes you on a roller coaster of feelings. John allowed himself to be taken by his team and locked up at the end of the last book. He spends a good chunk of the book stuck in that same cage, but still forms intense connections with Quantum and Melissa. She calms him in a way he has never experienced before. She also doesn't believe he is a danger to anyone, like the rest of the team thinks. What he is going through is scary, as his body just keeps breaking down the serum and his symptoms get worse, and you really feel Melissa's feelings of failure as she struggles to find a cure for the whole team. Through all this they form a strong bond, and fall in love. I also really felt sad about his daughter not being allowed to see him, and also his sister. I was a bit angry with her for not trying harder to see him...she was his biggest advocate in the last book, but it seems she has changed her mind now, which confused me. Reaper as always, made me angry in this book, he doesn't always treat his team like the family that they are and this was one of those times. He goes back and forth so much I don't know how any of them can trust him. I am hoping we get to explore more of Quantum and his abilities in the next book, and I am interested to see what the next threat is after all that went down in this one. John and Melissa had great chemistry, more so than some of the other couples...it will be hard to top this but I feel that Lindsay can do it.
John thought he was a part of a team... Team Mayhem but he was betrayed. They left him for dead and he is out for revenge. They look his sister and daughter and he will stop at nothing to get them back...
He finds his way in but he never in his wildest dreams thought it would end like this... locked up in a glass cage he senses her everywhere. He can smell her... practically taste her and he needs her now... only thing is.. they don't trust him so he is locked up in a cage like an animal...
Melissa senses him. Something about him draws her to him... what is this magnetic pull? They think they cannot trust him but for some unknown reason she trust him....
A month goes by and still he remains in a cage.. how can he get his team back on his side? He knows something they don't but to afraid to tell them. They won't need him then... they will just end him and then he won't ever get to see his precious girl again or have the pleasure of getting to know the sweet Dr. Melissa...
Proving himself comes at a huge cost but he is prepared to die to prove them wrong and to make sure they will all be safe again...
There is soooo much more story...
Lost for words! What a great story. Drama, fireworks of all kind... the adrenaline runs through you while it courses through them. You feel it to the bone.. well written and a must read! Well done Lindsay for yet another epic story...

The men of Operation Mayhem are back and despite great adversity and horrific use as experiments, having to pay with the ravaging side effects, these men are still heroic and loyal.
One man was left behind and thought he had been forsaken, so he was manipulated and set on a course of revenge against his army brothers and even his sister and daughter.
John Dawson surrenders after nearly killing his daughter, unsure of who can be trusted and who had really betrayed him. Dr Melissa Averton has made it her mission to find a cure and not just to mange her guilt and responsibility for the serum that impacted their lives, but because she is also a loyal member of this team... will that be enough to save John, as it is his mind as much as his body that needs saving.
This is a gripping story that will have you on the edge of your seat from the first page to the last. In this engaging plot is intrigue, a fight for survival, a search for the truth and trust to be earned. These compelling complex characters give plenty of action, adventure and of course romance.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
Melissa is a scientist and she helped create the serum that made the team what they are today.. killing machines. She has vowed to find a cure for them and works day and night to find it. John was a member of the team but was left for dead, only to become the General’s bodyguard. The General brainwashed John into believing his team betrayed him. He gives himself up and plans his revenge. He is locked is a glass cell and is being treated with injections, like the other men but he has to get more because he went out without the serum for so long. What he doesn’t expect is the beautiful doctor and the feelings he has for her. Melissa has always put her work first but she’s realizing she can have work and love too. Will it take John sacrificing himself before his teammates believe he is back to his old self? Action, betrayal, and sex. What more could you ask for? It did bring tears to my eyes. I really loved this story and didn’t want it to end but like all great stories, they must. * Voluntarily read and reviewed this for the author *
So excited to start this book. Have devoured every book by this author. She has been a top military read recommendation author of mine for years. Been looking forward to this story after following rest of series, there's something about them that sticks with you, matter how long it's been between books.
Even just the start of this book is proof of why this author is a master of her craft. You are instantly drawn back into their world and you'll stay that way long after the last page is read.
Watch as Dawson struggles with the aftermath of his time apart from the team, and how he finds it hard to know fact from fiction. Will the team and Melissa be able to get through to him?
I'm not going to say much more as Dawson's road to redemption is heart breakingly sweet and needs to be experienced first hand. What I will say is that it was everything I was expecting and more. This poignant story, like the rest of the series, will stick with me for years to come. Definitely a must click. Would give more stars if I could.
I have been with these men since the beginning and OMG, this ending tied it up nicely. John has been made to think his team left him and his team was led to believe he was dead. He has been kept in a cell in the mansion they have all been living in. Melissa is trying to find a cure for the serum the men were given. Her and John have undeniable connection like no other. She grows to care for him and wants to save not only the other team members, but John as well. All the men have trust issues. John doesn’t trust the team and the team doesn’t trust him. The only team member that John trusts is Quantum. I loved the friendship they have. I love the bond that John has with Q and Melissa. He has grown to care for her and trust her with his life. Will he and his team be able to trust each other again, or will the past keep rearing it’s ugly head? This is packed with suspense and some twists. You definitely need to pick this up. I have loved this series and all the characters I’ve met along the way. Lindsay did a fabulous job with these strong men and the women they have come to love.
We are back with the men of Operation Meyhem. Men that were used as experiments and who have had to pay with the side effects. One man was left behind and now he wants revenge. This man is John Dawson. Dr Melissa Averton has made it her mission to do all she can to save the members of Meyhem after the guilt of being responsible for the serum that changed their lives. When John surrenders under false pretenses , he hadn’t counted on Melissa . It’s a story that will have you on the edge of your seat from the first page to the last. In this engaging plot there are good guys, bad ones, intrigue, a fight for survival, trust or lack thereof, complex characters and of course, romance. Will they survive the race against the danger? Will John realize that trust and love can be his saving grace? Another well written story by this talented author. I was entrusted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.

Dawson is try ing to work through his thoughts and beliefs and gain the men's trust back . They need to stop Rainer before he creates more super soldiers like them . Dawson finds it's harder to trust and be trusted . When there's betrayal on both ends . Things between him and Melissa heat up and intense feelings get involved .This story is suspenseful and emotional and definitely action packed . I highly recommend taking the time to read this five star story .
OH MY EVER LOVIN' HELL! Lindsay Cross is brilliant at keeping me 1000% engrossed in a story, which also keeps the heart rate going at high levels. John Dawson is simply put, out to get revenge on everyone who messed him up, especially the doctor who changed him into something that has tried to destroy him. Dr. Melissa Averton is that doctor, and she's living with the over powering guilt that she came up with that particular serum, and has been doing everything in her power to undo the damage. John plans to kill her, and yet, somehow she gets under his skin in a different way blurring those lines of revenge. This story had so many twists which were all turned out that my f-bomb dropping was EPIC! Melissa knows that he's dangerous, but her heart won't allow her to write him off. I'm tell you, y'all HAVE to hit the one click button on Mayhem's Betrayal, as Ms. Cross has leveled up in spectacular ways! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL!
I am a HUGE fan of this series by Lindsay Cross, now only are the books super hot but the mystery and suspense sucks me in from the very beginning! I have been looking forward for this book for a long time and was so excited when I finally had the chance to read it!
John Dawson has every reason not to trust his former team, but what he was not expecting was the sexy doctor that is bound and determined to get him to see what is really going on. AHHHH just yes, I cannot tell you enough how much you need to read this book, it totally captured not only my attention but my heart totally went along for the ride as well. I don't want to give anything away, but know that this is a must read. I also highly recommend reading each book in order because the author did a great job of giving pieces for a master puzzle while also having individual books- 5 stars from me!
PS: Thank you to Lindsay Cross and Give Me Books PR for allowing me an advanced copy of the book to read and review honestly!
Mayhem's Betrayal by Lindsay Cross is an emotional roller coaster of a ride. Ever since the team discovered John Dawson was alive, I wanted to know more about him. This is his story. There were so many misconceptions between all of them which has led to guilt. Then enters Dr. Melissa Averton who has guilt of her own.
From the beginning I believed that there was more to Dawson than what was obvious. All of that comes out in this book as well as where he is able to go from here in his life. A romance would seem not something he is able to handle but is exactly what he needs. This is a story of overcoming unimaginable trauma, resiliency, learning to trust, and forgiveness as much as it is about love. Kudos to the author for this outstanding book.
The publisher/author gave me a complimentary ARC of the book which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Mayhem's Betrayal by Lindsay Cross is an adrenaline filled rollercoaster of a story. This book is filled with angst, betrayal, suspense, fear, guilt, lack of trust, and love. You will not be able to put this one down and you will read it in one sitting. The attraction between Melissa and John is so wrong and yet so right. John was left behind because his team thought he was dead. Dr Rainier turned John into the perfect killing machine and he can't remember what is truth and what is a lie. He wants to destroy his former team. Dr. Melissa is wracked with guilt over the damage that these men experienced at her hand but Melissa was duped by Rainier. If she doesn't find and antidote to the serum everyone of them will die a horrible death. This characters have become like family to me. Lindsay Cross has a unique talent in that she can keep the most convoluted storyline moving quickly along. Great book by a great author. You must try a Lindsay Cross book. You won't be disappointed.
**I received a copy of Mayhem's Betrayal from the author in exchange for a voluntary and honest review. My opinion below are mine alone and not solicited in any way.**
Mayhem's Betrayal by Lindsay Cross is the fifth book of the Operation Mayhem series as a loyal reader of both Operation Mayhem and Men of Mercy I give this story 4.6 stars for keeping you on your toes.
Can John Dawson be trusted back into the group especially since Reaper is still thinking he betrayed them? After all he tried to kill the men when they confronted General Rainier he was his body guard. But when Melissa starts to see him needing more and more doses she knows his time is find a cure. But as his migraines increase he knows where Rainer is and that there's more super soldiers can the men trust him again to take out the man who did this to all of them? There is also a unusual connection between Quantum and Dawson will the connection be explained as they can connect telepathically?
Will Dr. Melissa Averton be able to find a cure so that the men don't have to be dosed constantly especially Quantum and John who require higher doses?
This is an exciting action packed suspense filled romance story.Dr. Melissa Averton is working herself into the ground trying to find a cure so the mmm an infected won't need shots anymore. She feels guilt because she invented the serum an was lies too by General Ranier. He just wants super soldiers but wants them to have no conscious. An the attraction she's feeling toward John Dawson is hard to fight.John is locked in a cage because he almost killed his team an almost blinded his best friend. There are so many twists and turns to this story will keep you riveted until the very last page and leave you begging for more.I love the way this amazing author brings the characters to life before your eyes and makes you feel their emotions and their pain.I can hardly wait to see what's next by this multi talented author.
