It started with fire.

Not the kind that burns inside you and melts your heart into a mess of happy feelings. A real one. One that rips through wood and disintegrates brick and bone, leaving ashes and orphans in its wake.

Death would have saved me from a rocky family life. There would be no cigarette burns on the soles of my feet, no vicious words engraved in my mind, and no Kai Madison. The friend who saw past the scars and offered me pennies for my secrets. The guy who stole my heart with a single kiss in the middle of a rose garden on a snowy winter.

Nothing would have been easier to leave behind—to vanish from—but for the past four years, I've been isolated from the world, living in a hospital room and helping the Feds build a case against my foster-dad. Now I'm free and willing to risk my life to see him again.

There's only one problem. I'm no longer imperfect. I have the same heart, but a different face.

USA Today & International Bestselling Author of Romantic Suspense, Thrillers, & Dark Romance books.

Don't be fooled by the positive, unicorn-loving, bubbly nerd. Sonya writes about dark hearts, soul-crushing moments, and the in-between of moral code. In books, she spares no one from the emotional rollercoaster and the gut-wrenching turns, but in real life, she's all about the bounce—about embracing the change, using the hard parts of life to spring back up, and not giving up when things get tough.

Sonya's a sucker for romance, practically inhales books in her free time like they're oxygen, and nurtures an addiction to criminal psychology. Yes, she watches True Crime as a hobby. Forever a student at heart, Sonya enjoys adding degrees, accolades, and certificates to her roster, and is affectionately referred to as Dr. Paige Turner by her peers.

Her family insists she's smart, but they must not see her lose her phone at least twice a week, try to open the front door with the car fob, or toot brain farts on the daily. Luckily, they also think she's funny. But that's just one of the reasons why she loves her big Portuguese family, rose-colored glasses and all.

I will be sad to see this Modern Princess collection finish as I have been enjoying them, so far I have read the first four books in the series and each one has been amazing as the main female leads have drawn me in. Imperfect Princess by Sonya Jesus is loosely based on the Snow Queen. If you thought Rebel Princess was edgy, Imperfect Princess by Sonya Jesus takes the edginess up a few notches from orphans to abusive foster care and then the witness protection program. The book starts briefly with our two main characters Thorn and Kai. Thorn is a foster kid in a bad situation and Kai is her next-door neighbor and only friend. The novel then jumps into the present time where Kai is at Camelot University with his best friend Ledger. We read as Kai is in this on/off relationship with a popular girl Vanessa who is nicknamed the Ice Queen and it looks like this time, the pair might be breaking up for good. Enter Thorn who is now named Rose. She has changed on the outside from the girl whom Kai once knew but on the inside is a different story. Now back at the University, she is hoping to get a second chance with the one who got away - Kai. What happens though when he doesn't recognize her and she discovers the boy she once loved has changed as well, especially once she vanished? Where has Thorn been all these years and what happened? I did like the twists and turns with this book but felt that it could have gone on for a bit longer as the story felt like it ended too abruptly for me. It was like all this action and adventure happening and then wham bam thank you ma'am - you have reached the end of the story and I felt like I was hanging as it needed a more rounded finish for me. I also found the character of Vanessa annoying and just wanted to shake her – she wasn’t a favorite of mine. If you love fairytale renditions and romantic suspense with a kick, then check out Imperfect Princess by Sonya Jesus today.

I love when an author stretches beyond their normal writing zone. Sonya Jesus writes mostly hard-core thriller and mafia books, and while some of those elements are in Imperfect Princess, the story is far more about the romance and reconnecting with a lost love. While I love the author's other works, it was refreshing not to keep a body count in this story.
Thorn's family was killed when she was young, growing up in foster care scarred her emotionally and physically. However, while her last foster mother continues the cycle, her foster dad cares for the young woman, even though he's gone often for business. When she meets the neighbor boy, Kai, their weekly secret meetings give her life meaning. However, life still seeks to make Thorn's life hell.
Her foster father is in bed with the mob and they are forced to flee. Killing his wife and driving himself and his daughter into Niagara Falls makes everyone think the family is dead. Kai's world is devastated and all he has is momentos of his love, Thorn.
The story that follows has intrigue, suspense, jealousy, guilt, hope, and love. Thorn showing up on the CamU campus puts a lot of things in motion and emotions and hope run high.Things aren't always what they seem and Ms. Jesus does an excellent job of putting her characters in jeopardy and in the path of secrets that could kill more than those who are already dead.
The end promises there are more stories set on this campus and the body count will rack up in the future but the introduction into the world is a great second chance love story

Losing her parents as a child was bad enough, being raised in foster care was even more difficult but when Thorn lost Kai it was devastating. He was her best friend, her first love and the man who accepted her imperfections and all until her foster father’s activities has everyone believing that she is dead.

Kai has tried to move on with his life, but he has never forgotten his first love. When a new student shows up at college he is conflicted as she feels like Thorn but doesn’t look like her. He will do anything to reclaim the only woman he has ever loved and isn’t about to be deterred by the danger they find themselves in.

Suspense, twists and a love between Kai and Thorn that neither time nor distance can destroy.

This is the first book that I've read by this author and I didn't know what to expect. It does hold your attention and it does have some suspenseful moments. I did like this story and I felt like tit does hold your attention and also has some twists in the story that you don't see coming which is always great.

This book is part of a series in the The Modern Princess Collection book #1.

Thorn has has things extremely tough in her life and after she had no choice but to grow up in foster care because of a family tragedy, its hard and she struggles on a daily basis with her emotions. However when she meets Kai the next door neighbor and an all round good guy. It seems like things are about to get better and love might be on the cards, a real romance story. However life still keeps throwing curve balls at her to dodge and its difficult. She actually has real feelings and so does Kai, but is it meant to be?
(NO SPOILERS)

This book does have some mystery and some suspense and some twists and turns and some things that you wont see coming and also has some romance and love. This book have you feeling a lot of emotions for the characters and hoping that after everything her and his life will plan out in the end so they can have there own happily ever after. You will be rooting for them because after everything that they have been through your hoping that things will all work out.

This is a new book series that is beginning and I look forward to reading more in the collection and this book is a great addition to the series.

Thank you to the author and the publishers for allowing me to read an early copy of this book. ARC provided in exchange for a v honest voluntary review.

The Modern Princess Collection has such a great start! I loved “Imperfect Princess” was a GREAT story. We have strong characters, emotion, a solid plot, so it’s a recipe for success according to my standards.

Life has not been kind to Thorn. Having to wear her scars, she hides away, missing her best friend, the only person that showed her a glimpse into what love and friendship should be. Kai, on the other hand, has been missing his best friend and mourned her loss. Still, sometimes all good things come together, and someone has other plans for them.

The writing style is beautiful! It is my first book by Sonya Jesus and I can say I like her style very much, She managed to bring out the best in our main characters, without overstepping – creating the perfect boy and the perfect girl. Thorn’s emotional state is fragile, Kai’s regrets of not being able to admit his feelings, their struggles, everything is so well described.

Keeping this short, I do advise you check it out and I hope you will enjoy it at least as much as I did. I have discovered a new author, a new favorite story and I cannot wait to continue with the series.

I fell hard and fast for the characters in this book , and their story.
I loved the intrigue, it had me questioning which characters I trusted and which ones I didn't .
I gladly got wrapped up in Kai and Thorn/ Rose's story , it kept me on my toes, knowing that something bad could happen at any minute.

Kai and Thorns friendship was short lived . Their love for each other never died, even though Kai believed Thorn had died.

Thorn is now Rose. She has always wanted to see Kai again , but being in witness protection made that impossible. Until the DEA decide that now is the time for Rose to help them take down the cartel . This brings her back into Kai's life .

Even though Thorn has had full facial plastic surgery , Kai's whole being can feel that Rose is his Thorn . His soul and found its soul mate once again ,but now both of their lives are in danger.

Such a brilliant read

I was excited to start this series and this story did not disappoint. It had me at sexy, angsty fairytale. This one is loosely based on “The Snow Queen”.

Thorn and Kai (best names) have a young love, friends to lovers tale to tell. Ugh Thorn has had a devastating childhood and is now returning home. She has a new look and name. Read the story and you can find out why. My heart hurts thinking about it.

Kai has been dealing with a devastating lose for years, until he finds out it was all a lie. Eek. (Duh duh du duhh). As all is revealed in this story plan to fall more in love with this couple. I did.

This story isn’t super long but it packs a punch. It is fantasy at its finest. Scars, witness protection, returning from the dead, the cartel, and some nice heat are all part of this book. Ok I am not saying anymore because I might have said too much already.

Happy Reading Everyone!

😍💋 Kai & Thorn 💋😍
SNEAK PEEK!

Holy hell. Throbbing lips on quivering me.
My courage dies in a whisper, stealthily hidden between the lips I’ve never forgotten. They feel the same. Like acceptance and an invitation to stay. A promise of closeness I’ve so longed for.
Tongue-tied and unable to stop the collision of souls—the massive impact of two magnetic-sized hearts forced apart by time—I do nothing but shiver under his gaze. My weakness meets his strength, lips connect again and again, and I’m unassembled.
Broken to pieces by a kiss.
Disintegrating into his arms with every shared breath and loving it.
His tongue slips between the vale of my lips, erupting goose bumps all over my skin—even the grafted parts. His presence seeps in through the pores and leaks into every tiny muscle.
I’m a pulse of nostalgia. He’s the feeling of home.
---To all suspense and thriller lovers---
There's a secret at this end of this full-length novel!
& It's a very good secret ;)

Scarred but beautiful

The way Kai (male lead) mentioning the beauty of Thorn aka Rose (female lead), can be used to describe the book too. The Imperfect Princess is the first book in Modern Princess series which follows the self-acclaimed Princess of the Camelot University (CamU). It is a retelling of Snow Queen.

The story starts with five years back when Thorn, the name for Penelope Rose Thornton by Kai Madison when they are fourteen and fifteen years old teenagers from upstate New Year. Many can say the love that formed in that tender can be a temporary one though it's one's first love, for this couple, their love is craved deep inside the heart.

An accident separates them which gives Thorn a new identity and Kai the torment of losing his first love. Even after five years, Kai couldn't forget her. What happens when she returns to him with a new identity is the remaining story.

Author Sonya Jesus has done great work with the book. She made the book so intense, which could make one get enthralled into the book. Though the book started at a slow pace, nearing the end it reaches a fast pace. The author has mentioned every feeling, every emotion and every environment in detail that could make the readers travel to the scene and made to feel realistic. I enjoyed reading the book, I finished it in a single sitting for seven hours. Waiting to read her works and the upcoming books in the Modern Princess

Imperfect Princess is a great way to start the Modern Princesses collection. Imperfect Princess is an emotionally charged read, based on The Snow Queen. Now I have to say that this isn't a fairy tale I'm very familiar with, so the story just had to hold its own with me, and it really pulled me in right away.

Its Rose who has the life that is not what it seems when she's at Camelot U. She's spent years with surgeries to correct injuries sustained when her foster father tried to kill her and his wife along with himself or so it seems

Kai is the boy she loved then, but he can't know who she is now because of the federal case. Its got a whole Witness Protection thing going on, and a mystery involving Penny/Rose's foster family. Its a little hard to imagine how a child that ended up in the system, ends up with a foster family with mafia connections and then gets sent to wealthy people who essentially pay to fix her and that's how she ends up in Camelot U.

There are a lot of twists and turns as Penny/Rose finds her way back into Kai's heart. Her past makes for a gripping and sad story.

This story is absolutely amazing and unputdownable.

Imperfect Princess (Modern Princess Collection #1) is a cutting edge retelling fairytale romance of The Snow Queen with a mafia twist. I absolutely loved this version so much. Right from the beginning to the very end I couldn't put it down as the pages were calling me. I fell in love with the mc's Kai Madison and Penelope Rose Thornton AKA Thorn right in the beginning. I loved the writing style and the arrangement was perfect. Heaps of mystery and suspense swirling through the pages, along with angst, romance and love. Unexpected twists seeping through the narrative creating a euphoria. Supporting character's were intriguing and I would love to see them again. I just wish it was longer, I want more of Kai and Thorn. A highly captivating fairytale romance that will leave you craving more. I highly recommend reading this avant-garde version of The Snow Queen as its intoxicating.

Great Love Story!

This is a really great love story that will tug on your emotions and break your heart at times. Thorn has had a very damaged childhood and then to lose the only friend she cared about broke her along the way. But over the years Thorn has grown into a strong woman who can face her fears. Kai has always thought about Thorn and morns her everyday. When these two finally meet up again their connection and chemistry is still there and is stronger than ever. Their story is fast paced and full of action, suspense and lots of twists that will keep you captivated and highly entertained right to the very end.

This is a fantastic love story that once you start reading you will have a hard time putting down until the end. Great writing and fantastic storytelling!

A young girl forced to live her life in fear. She is parentless and in the foster care system, living with a couple that is not what they seem. She is left feeling that no one loves her until she happens upon the boy next door. Then she is thought dead. There is no trace of her.

Kai, the boy next door, is attending college when he runs into another student getting coffee and swears it is the girl next door, the one who is thought dead, and the one he never got over. He can't believe it, blows up at her, and runs away. Yet, he can't get over what he knows is true.

This is a story of true love. Even as teenagers Kai and Thorn knew the love they shared was special. They didn't know how to express it at the time and were torn away from each other before they got the chance but when they were brought back together they couldn't deny what they felt. I enjoyed seeing them learn about each other, love each other, and protect each other.

This was a really enjoyable read. This twist on the Snow Queen fairy tale easily kept my attention. The connection and history between Thorn and Kai helped to make a moving a captivating story. You can expect plenty of emotion, angst, drama, suspense and tension as this couple's romance unfolds. This is my elective, truthful review.

This was a great book for this series! Thorn and Kai knew each other as children/ teenagers. Kai was the only thing that Thorn had in her life that was any good. She was in the foster care system and her life had been anything but nice. Circumstances separated them until they reunite at Camelot University. Their story is full of twists and turns and so worth reading!

Thank you for the privilege of reading this book! Well done

This book is based on the Snow Queen. It starts off with Thorn being in what would be her last foster home. Her foster mom is abusive, but her foster dad is nice except he is not around much. Thorn also has Kai, the neighbor boy, who sees the real her and just lets her be herself. On her fifteenth birthday, her foster fathers tries to take the family over the border into Canada to get away from the drug cartel he has been working for unfortunately they do not make it. From a video, Kai and the rest of the world think Thorn died after being pushed out of the vehicle by her foster father over Niagara Falls and that he then shot his wife in the head and jumped. Only the wife's body was ever found, so Kai has never really come to terms with Thorn's death and each year he gets a little weird.
Fast forward four years and Kai meets his on again/off again girlfriend's new suite mate at CamU during the anniversary month of Thorn's death and he cannot help feeling that she is Thorn in the flesh. Even the differences in her name, which is now Rose, and in her appearance, like her facial birthmark is missing, cannot convince him 100% that Rose is not his Thorn.
Thorn/Rose has been sent to CamU to retrieve a book that is in Kai's possession that was given to her by her foster father for the DEA in order to help them with their RICO case against the Cartel. This book definitely grabbed my emotions especially when Thorn was injured and then thru all the turmoil of Kai and his love and how the past had shaped their futures. Read the book to see if Rose and Kai can find their way back to each other and if they can keep everyone safe from the Cartel, "The Snow Queen", the DEA, FBI and ?

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Imperfect Princess is the first book in the Modern Princess Collection by Sonya Jesus.

This book was monumentally disappointing. Mainly because in the beginning you can feel the story building to this big conclusion; for the mob after Del Rio, for the relationship/friendship that transcended Wednesday nights, to the imperfect scars hidden inside. But the resolution Sonya gave us was a terrible let down. We’re overweighted with extended definition into past events and all the intricacies of their current situation, and separation. But the character growth stops after the initial development and the connections between them seem so shallow. Then there’s Del Rio’s survival and the utter lack of development for his part in their current environment. We hear from him twice but it’s riddles and obscure comments trussed up like prophetic gibberish.

Maybe it’s my fault for nearly falling in love with the synopsis, it’s a recurring fault of mine. But the book and plot fell off once we got past rehashing the past and their troublesome feelings. Everything rushed towards this underwhelming ending. Which basically gave us a janky HEA and the bare minimum closure to qualify.

Great story. The beginning I thought was the end for Thorn and Kia. Two young kids helping each other and finding something special, comfort and love. Thorn lived in hell every day with her Foster mother, Meryl who mistreated her everyday. Her only bright spot was meet up with Kia on Wednesday nights at the bonfire. Thorn’s Foster father, Del Rio was away a lot on business. Del Rio made her feel safe when he was home. Everything changed one night when they had to leave all of a sudden. Thorn found herself in a car with two strangers who who foster father said they would protect her and keep her safe. But they ended up in a serious accident which left Thorn hurt severely. Years go by and Thorn is getting better and meets up with Kia at CamU to help the DEA recover something that belonged to her as a child. Kia recognizes Thorn but her name is Rose. It drives Kia crazy because he has missed her so much. True loves never dies for the two of them even with all of the obstacles. Loved reading this book. Great author.

Imperfect Princess starts out with Thorn, who lost her family when she was younger, and has had to live through several very bad foster families. This last family, the foster mother is horrible, while the foster father does honestly care for her, but he's gone so much of the time. Little did she know that he was involved with the mafia, and that it would lead to him killing his wife, and driving himself & Thorn into Niagara Falls, however she doesn't die but everything else changes as she goes into witness protection. She had one friend, Kai, who believes she died, and never got past it. Little did he know that he was going to come across her while in college, only she's Rose now with a whole new face. This story was fantastic, and I couldn't get enough because while it's a modern day fairy tale, it was still so exciting, keeping me on the edge of my seat the whole way through. Now it's your turn to experience this story, so hit those one click buttons, especially since I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL!

Imperfect Princess by Sonya Jesus is the first book in the modern princess collection. It is a stand alone book and you don’t need to read the rest of the books to enjoy this one.

What can I say about this book?! Umm, WOW! Seriously, I could not put this book down. It had a bit of everything, mystery, romance, crime, maybe even a ghost...

This book had me experiencing so many emotions, especially with the backstory at the start of the book, I just wanted to give 14yr old Thorn the biggest hug. She has been through so much in her life, it’s time that life gives the poor girl a break!

Definitely recommend reading this book, I just wish it didn’t have to end!

I seriously loved this story. Thorn comes back from some of the darkest times anyone could ever endure, and I loved that she was basically reincarnated - and got a second chance with her only love. There were lots of twists and turns in this book, which kept me turning the pages because I really wanted to find out what was going to happen next. I loved the backstory, loved that Kai and Thorn got their chance, loved the journey that this book took me on. What a fantastic start to this collection!

Thank you to the author for an advanced copy of this book. It's one of my favorites in this collection.

A beautiful, entertaining retelling of The Ice Queen. Growing up in the foster care system after he death of her parents Thorn has not had it easy. Finding solace in her weekly meets with the boy next door who trades her thoughts for pennies. Then things take a turn when her foster dad get in trouble with the cartel. Years later she's back with more scars and comes face with the boy next door but he has changed too. Can they find a way to a second chance. Love the start of this series and can't wait to read more.

This was such an exceptional read, I LOVED IT!

I was scared for Thorn - but, I loved that Kai was always there for her - he didn't treat her like the other kids, she was different, and he liked that about her. They were neighbors - he 'knew' what was going on in her household, but he wanted her to be able to count on him, and she did - she looked forward to their Wednesday's. Tragedy stikes and he loses his best friend.

Years later, he thinks he sees her in a campus coffee shop, it can't be, can it...…..

The Modern Princess Collection is kicked off by Imperfect Princess written by a new to me author. Even though this is the first I've read by this author, it certainly will not be the last. This was a very intriguing story. I swear my heart even broke a few times with all that Thorn had gone through in her short life. This story had the right combination of drama, suspense, and romance. The only reason I am giving this 4 stars instead of 5 is that I felt it was left too open-ended. I found myself looking for more.

This was my first book by this author. Of the Modern Princess Collection, this is by far my favorite. I'm not a reviewer that goes over the details of the book. If you're reading the reviews, you probably already know what the story is about. I'll tell you what I look for in a review: I like intelligent characters with witty dialog, humor, and steam. This also had intrigue as a bonus. It was paced well with well rounded characters. It was believable. I will read this author again.
