Just what exactly do Train Drivers do? It's a job with a slight air of mystery, even in the 21st Century. This book takes you through a typical "day in the life", as related by an ex-Driver. With information on technical aspects of the profession, extensive details of the "nuts and bolts" of a Driver's day, and lots of entertaining information only an insider could know, this book will appeal to would-be Drivers, rail professionals of all kinds, train fanatics, and just about anyone with a passing interest in railways or Train Driving.
An interesting and well written (short) book on a typical day for a train driver. Starting with waking up at an unearthly hour, it shows that there is actually quite a lot involved before the driver even gets near his cab to take people to work, or haul massive amounts of freight around.
Looks at the different types of trains, routes and everything the driver needs to be trained for (and how they respond when the unexpected happens).
It's not too technical, and the author gets everything across in an informal style. There's sidenotes with anecdotes of things that happened to other drivers, and also "the old days" to show how things have advanced since then. The author seems quite happy with the way things are now, and isn't harking back to rose-tinted days of old.
Well written and informative, with a nice touch of humour throughout.
Having been on the railway in the 60s it was interesting to compare then and now a lot of things were familiar tradition I suppose a really enjoyable read.
