This was SO CLOSE to being perfection that when I say the struggle is real not to fussily rate this one so let me start with all the reasons why At Her Command just grazed perfection first.

✤ JWH really digs into her characters and fleshes them out, warts and all. Here we have Rosalinda who is an experienced domme who has preferred up til now to travel lite, so to speak. Her paramour is an ex-SEAL with an up to now unexplored submissive streak a mile wide, Lawrence. Both have their fair share of baggage which presents its own level of heartache.

✤ The examination of the psyche both in scene and out of each of these characters and really any number of JWH's characters relentlessly stuns me every time, is truly a sight to behold, never fails to make me stop and think and examine and contemplate and usually results in some feels in Casa de Cupcake. At Her Command was no exception and I daresay Ms. Hill was ON POINT in this one.

✤ The kink is creative with just enough pain to keep me happy. Caning, sensory deprivation, CBT, rope bondage and orgasm denial.

✤ I also an a huge fan of people making family where one's real family was/is subpar to downright shitty and that happens in spades here. The women that make up Thomas Rose Associates not only are all dommes but best friends who have a special bond with one another. Moreover, each are intriguing in their own rite which makes me excited to read their stories too.

So you see, things were going SWIMMING-FUCKING-LY until...

(a) some nonsense psychobabble mumbo jumbo happened. I'm not going to go into what precisely it was. Because spoiler. But suffice to say MA FACE CONTORTED. No one needs nor wants their face to contort when things are going SWIMMING-FUCKING-LY now, do they? Though admittedly I am in the field so it probably rose my hackles more so than the average bear. Or something.

(b) the whole last scene. No. Just no. I don't recall this being a thing in the Knights of the Board Room series which this is a spinoff of and if so I feel a bit hypocritical; but I was not a fan. I know in the KOB series they can do the sharing but there's usually some buildup/longing/desire or something of that ilk. This was just... no. *shudders*

Nopity. Nope. Nope.

Though I am a possessive Cupcake so... grain of salt, people. Grain. Of. Salt.

I'm going to go with 4 stars despite the nonsense at the end because a book that was eleventy-seven hundred pages which held my interest and only had one hiccup should be rewarded. Recommend to fans of femdom who *should* enjoy At Her Command.

Super slow. I was bored and the way the (many) side characters were described, I felt like I was missing another book or something — because why did I need to know so much about them?! The sex scenes weren’t even hot. But hey! It was free, so not complaining too much here 😅

Read my interview with Joey W. Hill: https://wp.me/p5bsdH-3rh

Genre: Erotic Romance
Type: Standalone book 1 of Mistresses of the Board Room series
POV: Third Person
Rating:

Lawrence Gatlin had been in the military all his adult life. But an injury forced him to leave the life he loved and take a job in the security field. His new assignment Rosalinda (Ros) Thomas was not a typical client. The high powered businesswoman was also a Domme - a world that was new to him but felt familiar, like a second home.

I’ve always wanted to read more female domination books and I’m happy when I found out about this series. This book is very long and I struggled with the slowness of the first 60% but thankfully the story picked up after that point.

Turning that mirror on himself, he was an operator trained by his government to be a very effective and deadly weapon. No one would coin him as the type of guy who hungered for a Mistress.

I liked seeing Laurence went through a gamut of emotions in his acceptance of his predisposition. Ros was perfect for him with her protectiveness and understanding in rationalizing the normality of his desires. The kinky scenes were on the light side, but the grand finale was quite satisfying.

At Her Command is a story of opening up oneself for possibilities. It would appeal to readers looking for a Femdom story with emotional depth.

Can I give this more than five stars, pleeeease pretty pretty please!!! I've read some good books lately but this one was outstanding!!! This was my first book by Joey W. Hill but it definitely won't be my last one. I honestly think this just might be my favorite read of the last 10 years.

There are not many books that take my breath away but this one did just that, I swear I was so engulfed in some of the scenes that I forgot to breathe.

This is perhaps the best example I can think of illustrating how a book can depict consensual kink extremely well in ways that are compelling and difficult to find and that resonate deeply with me as a kinky person, and yet the book itself can not work for me because of the ways it reinforces racism, ableism, victim blaming, and rigid heteronormativity.

Rosalinda Thomas is a successful marketing CEO and a demanding Mistress. When she becomes the target of a gang leader, Ros agrees to having a private bodyguard. To sweeten the deal, she’s matched with former Navy SEAL, Lawrence Barrera Gatlin, who has an innate need to serve and protect.

“When a man gave her that kind of control, offering him release was a charge equal to closing her hand around a lightning bolt.”

What ensues between Ros and Lawrence is physically and emotionally intense. For Lawrence his military experience honed his skills but didn’t address he need to release control. With Ros, she offers Lawrence a safe space and a reliable partner who can equally take care of him. As they delve into the roles of Domme and submissive, deep emotions rise to the surface.

“But for the first time in her life, the connection she and this man had forged in such an insanely short time was allowing a side-by-side experience. ”

I’m always looking for good books featuring a Domme/sub theme and when I saw this author’s new series, I was immediately excited. For me, Ros was relatable and I admired her ability to carry on even in the most challenging situations. As for Lawrence, he was a perfect combination of protective but also a submissive with Ros. Together, their scenes were intense and hot. While there were parts of this narrative that lagged a bit, it was mostly due to foundational elements of the series rather than interactions between Ros and Lawrence. Between them, the dialogue and connection remained solid.

At Her Command is an erotic romance about two strong characters who learn how to overcome emotional fears. This book would appeal to those who want to be immersed in a BDSM themed story with a substantive plot.

Buy this book now! The start of a new series featuring Mistresses by talented Ms. Hill is not to be missed. Full disclosure, I didn't read the blurb and I kept myself in the dark about this book as much as possible. I wanted the full experience going in cold. I can confidently state that after the first couple of chapters, cold was the furthest feeling I experienced. The erotica in this book is so hawt that I had to take several breaks for a bit of "me time".

When it comes to BDSM romance, Ms. Hill is one of my favourites. This contemporary kink contains it all: smoking hawt kink scenes, mind blowing stimulation, heartbreak and love. Let us not forget a strong female lead who has the balls to confront a gang leader and threaten his theoretical minuscule manhood.

Set in the world of the Knights of the Board Room, this is a parallel world where powerful women call the shots both in their boardroom and bedroom. What I liked about this series is how the women dominate different than the men. In addition, their fantasies are different than what a male dominant has for their female submissive. Just as the male submissive differ in their desires and fantasies. As a pansexual switch, this erotic power exchange caressed all my pleasure buttons with exciting force.

Ros is the main character and the first in her group of women who finds a "forever" submissive. What I like about Ros is that she's a survivor. She is a survivor who isn't perfect. Her past experience and loss drive how she views the world. Even when she is an amazing communicator, she still has flaws which makes her human. Her hot button which make sense when her back story is revealed, breaks my heart. I wept for her loss and her helplessness. As a woman who is focused on solutions and fixing problems, to not be able to get through someone to their determent drives her crazy. I completely sympathize as I am the same way. I identified quite a bit with Ros which is probably why this story hit me in a couple of my weak spots. Spots I thought that scarred over only to find that I could still feel the phantom pain when Ros recalls her loss.

Lawrence as the love interest to Ros is perfect. He is a strong man who is intrigued with sexual submission. There are so many misconceptions and bad stereotypes of male submissives. Ms. Hill addresses these and also dispels them. Lawrence's erotic epiphany and exploration under Ros's experienced hands is sublime. When it comes to sweet and sexy kink, Ms. Hill is one of the best. Her writing transports the reader into the room with the couple. I could smell, see, hear and feel everything vicariously. Ms. Hill may consider herself a storywitch... I also add the title of sensual siren. Her magical writing lures me in and keeps me captivated, even after the story ends.

There are so many points to this lengthy novel I enjoyed. The kink scenes are well designed and give the sweet pain and rough pleasure I enjoy. The bondage is just right for those starting into kink. Whilst the heat to this kink is supernova, the actual scenes are good for new to kink. I highly recommend this erotic novel to kinky readers who would like to experience the wild side under a woman's velvet touch.

I read a book not too long ago where I stated it was a travesty I even had to rate the book because the story exceeded any rating system out there and to qualify it with all others under the same rating was an injustice to that story. I’m saying it again.

To say that I was ensnared by this book is putting it mildly. I was hypnotized by every word. I felt every single moment of this story down to my bones. There may actually have been some points where I did not take a breath for the anticipation. I had a complete deja-vu moment during my entire reading of this book because it made me feel exactly as every book in the Knights of the Board Room series had so many years ago. I fell head over heels for this author after that series except I don’t read paranormal books so it’s been a hot minute since I’ve enjoyed her writing magic and it was utter bliss to be back with her words again!

This incredible journey is not just a sexual journey but also a journey of growth and acceptance and at its core, a deliciously beautiful love story between two strong people perfect for each other. Every scene in this story or maybe I should say plot point is filled with passion. As a reader, you don’t get to just read the passion, you get to feel it and it is glorious! Another story I just did not want to see end!

Meet the Mistresses of Thomas Rose Associates. An intimate circle of women who embrace the challenge of domination—inside the bedroom and the board room.

This one was good in a characterization, emotional kind of way. How Lawrence struggled with his ex and why. It was quite poignant and heartbreaking. That such a hero couldn’t save the one person he wanted to save the most.

Otherwise, the other alpha submissive book was more intense in terms of pure sex. It was pretty much sex every other page. Here, there was more “slow” burn, if such a thing can happen in an erotic novel.

The reason it’s not 5 is bc the author wanted us to believe that Lawrence was an alpha sub, by virtue of him being a SEAL. That fact was hammered into us every time she got. But in my view, Lawrence wasn’t an alpha at all but more beta (and there’s nothing wrong with it). Just bc you’re a SEAL or used to be doesn’t make you “alpha.”

Because of this, I found the sex scenes less interesting. Not a fan of traditional BDSM scenes. I liked the other book better bc that H was a real alpha, and had to fight to submit, which made things interesting. And in the end, while he allowed her to do things to him, he only allowed it. It wasn’t “true” submission. I like that.

Here, while I liked Lawrence a lot, I just liked his character type less.

BTW, she’s 40+ and he’s in his 30s.

Objectively, it is a good novel, very well written, with good work on the psychological analysis of the characters. If you like stories of Domme/alpha male sub, this novel is for you! If you liked Knights of the board room, you have good chances to like this one also.

Now, subjectively.

- Romance is basically a story in which the identification of the reader with one or more characters takes up a lot of space. The more a romance novel is linked to the reader's fantasies (and/or or contains at least one character with whom the reader easily identifies), the more chances that the reader will like it (there are other considerations, but at the bottom, that's the most important). Of course, we can read and enjoy a romance novel even if it does not correspond to our fantasies.

I don't read Domme/sub novels. Joey's Domme/sub books are the only exception. When I found her books (I started with Knights of the board room series), I devoured them, I was so impressed by the psychological side that I decided to read Ice Queen even if even if I was not (and still not) attracted to domme stories. I'm unable to identify myself with a domme, but since I had never read one, I told myself that Joey's book was a good gateway. I really liked Ice Queen (I reread it), and probably the fact that the story presents a domme who discovers her sub side helped (but also, very much, the psychological analysis which is an essential quality for me when I read romance, and this is a great strength of this author).

So... I did not like Rosalinda. Some personality traits were good, but personally, I found that she had too much psychological baggage to be a good dominant. Good (very good, she have all the drive it take to be a good one) for a session or a brief fling without tomorrow, but not for the long term. For me, she's too angry, too impulsive, too quick to protect herself emotionally to be attentive enough to her submissive. She has emotional wounds which prevent her from fulfilling her domme role. I understand the why (Laurel), but being dominant comes with serious responsibilities, they have the well-being of their submissive in their hands (sometimes literally their life). They must settle anything that may prevent them from seeing to the well-being of their submissive. Last thing: she is lying to herself, and I find it dangerous in an emerging relationship with a submissive.

- I know that all these reproaches gives the impression that I ask the dominant to be perfect, but no. I wondered if I was more severe because Ros is a domme and that I prefer male Doms. I compared her behavior with Tyler, Dale and Logan's (my three favorite Doms), and all three are much stable, stronger psychologically and emotionally than Ros (same with Marguerite, who have also a lot of baggage, and Janet, and Lyda). I think that when I read a Dom/sub story, the psychological solidity of the dominant is paramount so that I embark in the story.

I know, nobody's perfect, but this lesson, Ros should have learned it before starting a Domme /sub relationship with Lawrence.

- I liked better Lawrence, partly because I usually identificate myself with the sub character, but also because he was (for me) way more likable than Ros. More stable, more close to his emotions, more honest with himself. I would have liked to know more about his past life, I would also have liked him and Ros to talk to each other more.

So, not my favorite Joey's book, but that won't keep me from reading more of her in the future!

At Her Command is a sensitive and insightful journey. Rosalinda Thomas is a tough as nails CEO and a Dominatrix who has earned the trust of many a sub. She doesn’t believe in love. Lawrence recently left the SEAL’s and the Navy which makes him pretty tough too. He’s intrigued by Ros’s world. He has the need to serve. Their path isn’t easy but it is worth the pain and sacrifice. This author puts you into the hearts and minds of her characters which makes the story that much more meaningful. This tale will break your heart and rebuild it. Absolutely fabulous.

Amazon / Apple / Amazon Worldwide / Nook / Kobo / Amazon Paperback

Lawrence is out of the SEALs and his friends think he's a bit lost, so they suggest to Rosalinda (Ro) she perhaps help him explore her world of Domination and submission. He has a deep need to serve, so perhaps he really does have an inclination for submission. He can explore this new world while protecting Rosalinda at the same time. It sounds like a great idea, and it is until Lawrence's loyalty to his ex pushes the buttons of one of Rosalinda's hard limits. Will Lawrence fall in line with his Mistress, or will his stubborn, loyal nature be too much for Rosalinda to bear?

I haven't read a lot of Domme themed BDSM books, I tend more to the male Dom themes, but I have to say this one turned out to be pretty interesting. I was especially fascinated by Lawrence's character, his contrasting alpha tendencies with his need to serve and submit. I admit I was not all that into Rosalinda's rather cold character, but I do think she and Lawrence are perfect for each other. There is a very intriguing secondary cast that make up Rosalinda's friends and fellow Mistresses, and one of them in particular - Abby, has me on the edge of my seat waiting for her story.

Emotional, Surprising, Delicious

“I’m a Dom, Lawrence. You’re not. You have a desire for a Mistress. That doesn’t make me see you as less of a man. Not all male Dominants will feel that way, but every culture has it’s a$$holes. Don’t let that stop you from being who you want to be, or from being with who you want to be with.”

I loved this story of a very confident Domme, Rosalinda or “Ros”, and a retired SEAL, Lawrence, who is exploring sexual submission to a woman for the first time.

If you think a Femme Domme isn’t your thing, I recommend giving this story a go. There’s nothing beta about Lawrence, which makes his submission even more delicious and more emotional.

“It was so natural to him, these things he’d never said to a woman. As if he’d been waiting forever to say them. To the right woman.”

Joey always has such a way of breathing life into characters. Soon you’ll forget they are fictional and swear they are real, living breathing beings going through an extraordinary journey. In this book, Ros and Lawrence test each other’s courage, make mistakes, and are confronted with long-held life patterns that may or may not serve them anymore.

The book kept me on my toes, too. Just when I thought a particular story line was about to wrap up, it went a level deeper. Just when I thought I knew what Lawrence was dealing with it, their relationship – and his reaction to it – went yet another level deeper. This is the masterful writing that Joey. W. Hill brings to all her books.

The comradery between the females also was a very (VERY) refreshing addition. Modeled after her very popular Knights of the Boardroom (some of my favorite books – ever), the other “Mistresses of the Boardroom” are introduced in this book. What the author does, however, is make them integral to Lawrence and Ros’s story, which is yet another masterful part of her writing. Nothing is wasted, nothing is a throwaway. Everything makes sense and drives the main story forward. I can’t wait to read their stories next!

I had a lot of high hopes for this book, considering how much I love this author's other books. I love that she writes in the POV of Dominants and submissives, males and females. She is usually excellent with believable characters, however she really missed the mark on this one.
The female lead is a Dominant, however instead of being well-rounded and complex, she just comes across as being a massive witch. The male is alpha but submissive, and clearly has some issues regarding his esteem and self-wroth. So of course, having a Dominant in his life who isn't really a Dominant, but just a witch with low self-esteem makes my stomach churn.
I wanted to finish this book, but it just got less and less palatable. The final straw was when the female lead made the male lead apologize for his reaction to sexual harassment by another female. At first, I appreciated that the author included harassment of a male by a female, because it is something that does happen and that the world needs more awareness of. However, the female partner did not like the way her male submissive handled it, scolded him, and made him feel even crappier than he already did and apologize. No. This is not okay. Under no circumstances, should I victim ever have to apologize for having been harassed, or for how they handled it. I was sickened when that apology came out of the characters' mouth and I can't read any further, and I am really disappointed in this author, because I expected so, so much better.

Warning: Review with spoilers. A basic romance with good handling of BDSM until he has to have sex with ALL her best friends to prove his devotion. Like, running a gauntlet and beating the final boss in a video game. Weird and why? The sex was hyped as HOT but I wasn’t blown away. Aside from describing some interesting toys, the sex was all pretty predictable and became redundant. The drama felt super contrived and ridiculous at some points. Like, high school drama but with Fortune 500 companies plus a SEAL thrown in for why? I rarely read straight romance but a reviewer I like gushed. She needed breaks? I read it in a day but it took effort because I couldn’t get invested. Was it the sex? It was ok but the female MC’s personality was just “business bitch with hot shoes” and I found her dull and stubborn, in a stupid way. He was totally forgettable and another duty drone with no personality outside of his deep desire to be a doormat to an abusive alcoholic. The author’s grasp of prose at times is inspiring. Other times, there are weird descriptions of the heroine sitting in and on things that left me boggled or sex positions I couldn’t decipher. As I’m unfamiliar with the author or the publisher, I’m assuming it’s small or the book was self-published and I’m not bothered by the occasional errors but some of the action scenes and dialog could have used a closer eye.

It just got worse and worse as I read. The female lead is supposed to be a tough, strong role model and leader, but she’s just a brat. Some of the scenes were hot, and the book was even partially enjoyable until Lawrence was sexually harrassed by a woman in power. At first, this was handled really well, and I really appreciated that the author was doing it, because the world needs to recognize that this is an issue. However, the author then flushed all the good she did down the toilet after her majesty Ros decided she didn’t like the way Lawrence handled. Ros then proceeded to make Lawrence feel like crap for the way he handled it, and made him apologize. This is awful and unacceptable and almost worse than the original harassment. It doesn’t matter if a relationship is vanilla or BDSM, but it’s under no circumstances is it okay to make a victim apologize for how they handled a situation.

This book, like all of Ms. Hill’s other books, takes beautiful care to explore each character's background so the reader can understand their process. It is both humorous and poignant. It is erotic yet personal. And while all of the characters did not gel for me personally, I can't say it isn't my own idiosyncratic ideas that get in the way of this particular story resonating with me. This rating of a Joey W. Hill book is, for me, a complete oddity. There are very few authors out there who create - or are capable of creating - consuming worlds and strong characters to inhabit them, quite the way she does. Accordingly, it has taken me some time to put my thoughts in order, and straight up: I am not usually an avid reader of femdom. That said, I took some time to parse out why this story that started so strong for me, ended on a less-than-expected note.

First: I loved Lawrence. A man of service in all aspects of his life, whose very DNA would not let him leave anyone behind, including a past woman who did not understand the treasure she held in her hands, and who was manipulative in the extreme. I had more scorn than pity for her despite her issues. His dedication to her was more than she deserved and much less than he did. That relationship made for a complex man and utterly huggable character, who always put others ahead of himself, to his own detriment. Second: I loved the early chapters and how beloved characters from a past series were caring, protective friends who set this professional relationship on its inevitably personal path.

I had less kind feelings for Ros. That said, I did love how she recognized the man inside Lawrence that even he didn't understand. I thought she nurtured him unfailingly and encouraged his self-acceptance, but she lacked the insight to recognize her own shortcomings. I felt that her do-as-I-say-not-as-I do attitude ultimately undermined Lawrence and his investment in their relationship, and as such, was damaging to his already tenuous self actualization. Not that anyone is always able to see their own personal forest for the trees, but in the guise of a D/s dynamic and would-be committed relationship, it did not sit well with me that she could so definitively tell him one thing and absolve herself of the same standards. In real life, she and I would have been having a come-to-Jaycee moment, and book-Ros gets no less from me. If you demand others face their demons you had best be attempting to exorcise your own.

I suppose too, the culminating event of the story feels a little too like the events of the earlier series but is without the same effect. Partly, I suppose, because this group of women could stand on their own. That said, connecting with any of them as primary-characters-in-waiting was difficult for me. I have to ask myself if this has anything to do with my lack of general investment in femdom, and I honestly can't say that is not it…

I can say I am drawn to character-driven stories and I am one of “those” readers (cue eye-roll) who prefers them angst and drama free. As a series, there is certainly a deep well for potentially amazing characters with backgrounds that will be a challenge to relationships. A veritable font of reader possibilities…

A 4 1/2 star read, how I wish those would become available...sigh.
I've read BDSM and D/s books before, but honestly never one where the sub has been male. Let me clarify further in stating that most of the books I've read prior have either led toward the male being a switch or still a Dom with perhaps just some servitude like tendencies. So, never one where the male sub has purely been just a sub to a Domme. This was a unicorn find, at least for me.

You see in this world, perhaps just like a rainbow, it isn't just black and white. There is an array of how people find their pleasure and pain (and most times those two are intermixed), but I enjoyed reading about this rare man who was a sub, in complete service to his Mistress even when not in play, and yet was also a SEAL, a man with full alpha tendencies committed to service and protect by nature, but one not typically at the ready to kneel. At least that he was aware of until he met Rosalinda.

Lawrence had never been in the BDSM world before leaving the military, but now that he's left his life feels empty and he's looking for a purpose. He has friends that have played in this world and perhaps see something in him that even he hasn't recognized in himself, but upon their recommendation he becomes security detail for Rosalinda Thomas, a business woman and Domme.

Rosalinda has had her life threatened and although she doesn't believe she needs extra protection her friends bed to differ. Upon meeting Lawrence she is impressed with his security measures, but even more so with his subservient vibes. He has never been immersed in the lifestyle and she is itching to teach him everything she knows. Lawrence is someone she gets to personally unlock and truly find out his potential, it makes having someone around to guard her less unappealing.

While Lawrence works at neutralizing the threat surrounding Rosalinda he also struggles with natural submissive tendencies that she brings out in him. He feels the need to protect her, but also to submit. It messes with his mental state the longer he's around her. How can he be the best choice when he's pulled in two different directions?

Ros knows in polite society a man is supposed to be the alpha dog and as much as she disagrees with that view she also sees Lawrence struggling with his place in the world. As much as she wants to guide him along his journey, he also has to be willing to take the steps to meet her along the way. A D/s relationship is only as good as the trust they build upon it.

This is the first in the Mistresses series and you are introduced to the Domme's that will have their own books in the future as well touching base with past Dom's from Hill's other series.

I don’t even know what to do with this book. This was the first book by this author I’ve read, and I’ve now run through several more. The thing is, I feel vaguely ashamed about how addictive I find Hill’s writing. It is a hair shy of trauma porn, incredibly gender essentialist, somehow both nonchalantly accepting of queerness and deeply terrified of it, and kind of racist. This one isn’t even that bad compared to one of the others I’ve tried (I won’t be posting them all on GR because frankly most people in my reading network aren’t going to be interested in this author). But I, uh, kind of liked it. Judge me. I certainly am. In my defense, part of why I read this particular book is because I knew I wanted to read the second in the series which features an MC with schizophrenia. That review is coming soon—it deserves a lot more deliberation than this “Hannah wtf” one.

Overall rating: 3?
Hannah Angst Scale rating: 3
Content notes: alcoholism (MMC’s ex and FMC’s father abuse alcohol), war injury and medical discharge, death threats, attempted murder, graphic violence and killing, domestic violence (FMC’s college best friend was murdered by her husband while he was drunk), on page sex, BDSM, fatphobic language, gender essentialism, pro-military and police sentiment, secondary character with leg amputation due to service injury, secondary character in beginning stages of schizophrenia, and probably a lot more I failed to note risk of triggers are high

I have read several "intro to BDSM" books, but this one is far above anything I've read so far. Usually a strong Domme gets paired with a Dom and it's a battle to see who comes out on top (multiple puns there). In this story, the Domme remains in control, and the sub learns the joy of submission. Even though he could kill her a dozen ways with one hand tied behind his back.

The detailed explanations of control and care, protection and pleasure, are excellent. The methods she uses to get around his limits are clever, stretching his resolve while honoring his boundaries, at least at first. The importance of communication and clarity determine the strength of the D/s bond.

There is angst and outrage and one really dumb move, but they all contribute and none are overdone. There are lots of sex scenes, but the plot and the secondary characters are not ignored. Everyone has some baggage from their past, and most of it is put away by the end of the story.

I'm not into CBT, or pain in general, but the intensity of these scenes kept me from skipping them. I will read the next one.

PS - this is long! Over 500pp.

I'm only halfway done but it's a struggle for me to continue. I really don't like Ros. And her impulsiveness is really pissing me off and the way she treats Lawerence sometimes irks me. I'm going to try to push through to the end, but I'm finding it hard to.

Giving it 2 stars for now, might update after finishing if I see improvement.

Update: I still don't like her. At more than one point I wanted to pull her hair out. Liked Lawerence though, which is why it's not getting one star lol. Just not the story for me I don't think. The writing isn't bad or anything, I just didn't connect to it really at all like I do to most books. I digress.

There aren’t a lot of BDSM romances with a female in charge out there. This book is one of those reasons. The female isn’t strong. She isn’t a role model. She’s pretty much just a bossy brat and honestly this character makes all women in dominant positions look bad.
Oh yeah, the writing. Not nearly as good as this author’s other books. It’s like she was half asleep when she wrote this.

This is Ms Hill at her very best again!
How she manages to weave the tapestry of a relationship evolving from a meeting at the club until the very end, is nothing short of breathtaking.
She leads you in a deeply sensuous dance between two strong individuals. Both showing a depth of feeling, of understanding human nature that leaves you in a constant state of vibrating anticipation.
With incredible attention to detail she lets the story of two principled, honorable people unfold. A story that reaches deep into the human psyche until at last their ultimate truth is unveiled.
Ms Hill's magic word-smithing is out of this world!
Just one example, Lawrence alone in his house, inside his head, following his Mistress' directions is so unbelievably arousing....

★ Honest, intelligent, and engaging read ★

When Rosalinda hires Lawrence for protection detail duty against an identified personal threat, the offer also came with the opportunity of taking an inexperienced sub under her wing. Not just a run-of-the-mill man from off the street and regular walk of life, but a hardened Navy SEAL who has seen and experienced more than his fair share of life. If the instant attraction at first meet was any indication, this was going to be an amazing match of personalities. As Ros slowly immerses Lawrence under her Domme spell, she finds that this one man has the ability to center her more than anyone else, besides presenting as an unusual challenge: “He had a submissive craving, but he was a hundred percent alpha male.”

An honest, intelligent, and engaging read, with an intriguing cast of secondary characters and the right dash of danger and suspense! Cannot wait to read of the other Mistresses' stories in this series!

Wow!!! I was awed by this book and the talent Joey W. Hill shared writing it. I have not, until this book, read a book with such a strong male submissive. The ability to map his journey with its ups and downs was mind blowing. Ros with her own story as a Mistress was totally inspiring too. I had a hard time getting things accomplished in my world once I picked this book up. This is my first novel by this author and I am so grateful that I downloaded it from Amazon. I am also super excited to to see the second book in the series comes out in a couple of weeks. This is one of those that I am glad for the ability to read more soon. I am headed back to Amazon for more by Joey W. Hill.

5 Star Review At Her Command (Mistresses Of The Boardroom #1) by Joey W Hill
I was so excited when I learnt that Joey W Hill had a new series coming out and I jumped at the opportunity to read and review. I was even more intrigued when I learnt the name of the series. This is Rosalinda (Ros) Thomas and Lawrence Barrera Gatlin’s and oh what a fabulous story it was.
Both Ros and Lawrence, a former Seal are strong, commanding characters with a great deal of honour and integrity. Ros is a Mistress in every sense of the word and it was riveting to watch as Lawrence acknowledged his need to serve Ros. The road they travel is long, winding and bumpy, but they do eventually get there.
Although At Her Command is predominately about a BDSM and D/s relationship, to me it was a love story, one of courage, and sheer determination. The scenes are hot, yet emotional, drawing the reader in so much that you almost feel that you are witnessing it first hand. The roller coaster of emotions that Joey W Hill brought to this book is amazing. It was an emotional journey not only for Ros and Lawrence, but for the reader as well.

This book, was well written and held me captive from the first page to the last. A wonderful beginning to an exciting new series and I look forward to reading more.

Extremadament hetero. Reforça els rols de gènere d'una manera que em provocava bastant de cringe.
Punt positiu: l'insight psicològic dels personatges en la seva relació D/s.

I love Joey Hill, but this was not one of my favorites. It’s very long and had way too much focus on side characters.
