i don't know if i disliked this book because of the quality of the audiobook, or if I actually disliked the book. the romance is sweet, Blaze is so caring and he just wants to protect Riley after everything she been through. Now let me rant about this audiobook, God what a shitty quality! I'm not hating on the narrator, 'cause she was fine, but I could hear a dog barking, the notification sound, I even heard the sound of a truck!
While I did enjoy this, I wish I could have liked it more. I enjoyed the romance between Riley and Blaze, but it felt like we barely got scenes with them! The story was focused on the whole family so much of the time that the romance was pushed to the back burner. With that, the story was okay, I just wanted more from it.
Really disappointed with this one, some heavy material which I don't mind but this story seemed to be more about another character from book 2. For a while I thought this story was about the H and his "best friend (Sage)" because much so focus on them two. Blaze was super sweet and I guess his friendship with Sage was precious after everything she had been through but I just didn't like his thinking of the similarities of Riley & Sage. I just wasn't feeling it 😕😔
thank you for making it not only a great story but just long enough! so many writers are to short now a days and rushed, this was great, cant wait to read the rest if them, you are one of my new fav writers.. ill be exploring more of your work when im done with this series 😁💚
This story, as tasteful and careful as it can be, does include conversations and situations involving domestic abuse both in the characters’ past and being faced in the present. If domestic violence/abuse is a trigger for you… simply be aware before picking up this title. (said with complete respect to both the author and to the reader)
I’ve said publicly, and quite frankly, that romances that spring domestic abuse on me unaware are stories that, unless they are ARCs, I will make a decision at that moment to continue or to close the book and walk away. Domestic abuse is a trigger subject for me – it is for many readers, so I protect myself when reading about the subject. This isn’t something I go on and on about, it’s simply part of my personality now. I make sure that for those stories that I did continue with and enjoyed have a very loud and clear trigger warning on the review – this is the first time I’ve explained myself.
The reason is quite simple really – the series “Rock Springs, Texas” will deal, in one way or another, with domestic violence or domestic abuse, most times in a character’s past but occasionally in their present as well. Not one of those situations is tossed out there unaware, none are done for the shock value – they are part of the character’s lives, deep in their DNA now (and I get that) so dealing with the character’s triggers with kindness, good taste, and perhaps understanding make this a series that entertains and, in a good way, teaches that there can be happiness, a good life beyond the really bad crap that sometimes happens.
It is for that reason that I’ll continue until the final book with this series – perhaps even binge reading as I become familiar with these people who are touching my life in a positive way. I have reached a point in my life where I can do that – not every reader can, we each make our own decisions… but I would encourage all readers to pick up “The Cowboy and His Runaway” and experience Blaze and Riley’s romance for themselves, meet the siblings (not all blood related) who run these ranches with each other’s help as they all deal with their pasts, live in the present, and open their hearts to love in their futures.
Riley waited for the right moment, and when it finally came she ran as fast and as far away as she could – which given her physical condition at the time, was a miracle in itself. One unaware angel driving a big rig brought Riley to a small town that would hold her future, help her heal in so many ways, and offer the love of a lifetime with one amazing man. I loved Blaze and Riley, from the beginning the reader knows that they are right for each other, eventually. Watching Riley heal under the tender care of this unconventional family was like aloe to a wound, calm, soothing, and just felt so good. In fact, I fell in love with this entire family and I’m definitely looking forward to discovering their individual stories.
This is probably my most unusual review… ever. But because this story was so good – and as part of that “triggered” audience, I needed other readers who might also fall into that audience to know that although it was painful at times to read, it was also a story of hope, of recovery, of possibilities, and of finding love in spite of all that has happened in Riley’s life. I don’t give out 5-star reviews often (mostly 4.5 is as high as I go) but ‘The Cowboy and His Runaway‘ deserve every single one of those 5 stars… and more.

What a joy to meet Blaze, Riley and Blaze's family. There is so much love in this family that the reader feels it through the whole story. Even though the terrible treatment that Sage, Colt and Riley survived wasn't love where they ended up was. Blaze was drawn to Riley from the moment that he saw her hidden in his hay loft. The minute the family hears how she managed to get away from her abusive boyfriend they had her back. It was fun to follow Blaze and Riley's romance with a few tense moments facing down the exboyfriend. I look forward to learning about the rest of the family in the future.
A good story. The frequent reminders that there are abusive people in this world was a bit hard for me to handle, but I feel the story is a service to those in need of help. Sage, Riley, Colt, and Mac all had abusive backgrounds. All worked to overcome them. Their stories are inspirational.
This is an incredible start to what I hope is a wonderful series. You will fall into their stories and fall into their emotional moments. Almost as if you are part of their lives. Just Awesome!
I really enjoyed my first read of this author. And I’ll definitely coming Rock Springs Riley and Blaze story was so good, it definitely kept me on my edge of my seat. I’m so happy they both got that happy ending. 💛
And touching story. Riley is running from an abusive relationship and finds her way to a ranch that just happens to know what to do. Sage, Colt, and Mac are all survivors of physical abuse as kids and the family that took them all in. Blaze is one of the natural kids but he helped Sage, then Colt and also Mac he knew he could help Riley. But is it more.
Riley has to get away from Jed before he kills her! This time two black eyes and probably a few broken ribs. Last time she was unconscious for a week and couldn't get out of bed. This has to stop and this is the night it does. She takes matters into her own hands since every time she has tried to get away before, the police, her Aunt or whoever she ran to for help always brought her back to him. Well not this time. This time Riley is determined to get away. She buys some sleeping pills and crushes them and puts them in his drink. Only the first time she only uses the recommended amount and Jed only got drowsy, this time she uses three times the recommended amount and puts it in several drinks. Making sure he is ok before leaving, she takes what little money he has out of his wallet and heads to the interstate to try and get a ride. Thankfully the trucker who stops is a woman! Lily doesn't hesitate, she tells Riley where she's going and even buys her food and drinks for their trip which they become friends on. When Lily drops her off, Riley has no one to call nor any where to go. So while trying to find food out back of the bar, two men stumble out fighting, which of course scares her with what she just left, so she climbs into the back of a pickup which have blankets so she hides! Next thing she knows the truck is moving! When it stops she stays hidden until she is sure it's safe, then she stumbles to the barn and almost passes out from the pain. She wakes the next morning to four men and a woman staring at her. She's more scared than when she was with Jed because she has no idea what to expect. What happens next? Will she be safe? Will they hand her back over to Jed, like every one else has? One way to find out, read this great story by Kaci Rose! You wont be disappointed! 👍
New to me author. I enjoyed this book so much that I got the rest of the series that is available. Riley ran for her life. In a bad situation she decided to hitchhike and hope the ride was better than where she came from. Blaze has watched others close to him in bad situations so he knows what he is seeing in front of him. But he doesn’t focus on that. He is focused on the attraction he feels for Riley.
Blaze is a loving son helping run their farm. He has a good friend who has a horrendous life and eventually is adopted into Blaze family. Now comes Riley who has managed to run away from a very abusive boyfriend. The story of how she arrives into the farm makes a super loving story. The Author has crafted a meaningful story, well worth the read.
I honestly don't know what to say! This story just blew me away, the topic of abuse especially child abuse is blatantly the showcase I love how the author took it beyond. This loving and caring family just pull you in. Can't wait to read the rest of the series.
Now I know I could give you a plot summary but I’m sure plenty of other reviews will do that so let’s skip that. I’m surprised by just how much I enjoyed this novel! I picked it up as a freebie in a newsletter and something about it just pulled at my attention. I’m not much of a 2nd chance romance kinda girl, but then this is not really a 2nd chance romance. I just read the blurb and it tugged at my interest. And, truthfully, I loved these characters. The plot line was all at once familiar and yet...totally new. The story was well developed and her writing had a sense of honesty to it. I really felt like this family could exist and I want to know them. It had some typos but nothing too bad and that is literally my only complaint. Ok...the fact that book 2 isn’t included free could be listed as a complaint but that’s not really neither here nor there. It is my first novel to read by Kaci Rose but I’m already intrigued enough to want to read the more of the stories about Rock Springs. Even book 2 which is definitely a 2nd chance romance (different main characters but still in this series). See how much I liked this?
The Cowboy and His Runaway( Rock Springs Texas Book1)
This book started off with a bang and just kept right on going! The people in this book all have had problems at one time or another, but they all have each other’s back. So when they find a woman in the barn loft that had very apparently been beaten, they did what their family had always done, they let her stay. They also have their own stories to tell which just make this book get better and better. I just hope this review is enough to make you want to read it,because it’s just that good!
I loved getting to meet the characters, and watching them build their relationships (not just the main characters, but all of the characters). I loved that while it was insta-love, it wasn't rushed. I felt it happened in a realistic timeline.
As a Texan from a small town, I love the feel you get from Rock Springs which makes it feel authentic... although she called it a "conceal and carry permit". It used to be called a Concealed Handgun License (CHL) often called a "concealed carry permit", but in 2016 it was changed to License to Carry (LTC) when Texas allowed open-carry of hand guns (although on your own ranch or home you don't need a permit). Their ranch was 410K acres and the "second largest" in Texas, but that would have only made it the 5th largest, and only half the size of the King Ranch. Small things make a difference. If you are going to set a story in Texas, at least use Texas terminology and realize we really do things bigger here!
I found myself having a hard time relating to this story. I'm going to blame it on the writing style and not the deep content of the story. The characters, while staying true to character, seemed awful juvenile for being in their early twenties. Moreover, the whole ranch thing didn't ring true. The kids scrimped and saved up their earnings and pooled together to buy a ranch that when combined with the parent's ranch comprised 580,000 acres. I sincerely doubt that, even in fiction land. Also, they can cover most of the fence line in an afternoon? So not happening. The spice picks up in the bedroom finally somewhere near the end of the story, which eliminates this from being a YA genre story. But the rest of the story, yeah, I think it would fit better in YA, but not for any kids growing up on a real ranch/farm.
Blaze and his family are the Good Samaritans of their town. They take care of everyone and anyone in need of love and a safe home. So when Riley is found on their property, they open their arms to her unconditionally. Riley begins to feel safe for the first time in long while, but her past doesn't seem to want to stay in her rear view.
This book started out really slow. I guess the author was trying to set up the series here so she gave us quite a bit of backstory. And it was A LOT! I felt the secondary characters got more on-page time than Blaze & Riley. The romance initially moved at a realistic pace, given Riley's situation. However, I felt it sounded a bit insta-love as the book neared the end, and there were some huge time jumps that made the romance seem a bit rushed.
I did manage to read til the end, and Riley's story did tug at my heartstrings.
A remarkable story about triumph and hope after physical abuse and how Blaze's parents took in and adopted several children who had been abused by their parents. Sage and Riley were two, remarkable women and to see Sage help Riley to triumph over her past made the story really interesting.
Blaze is such a sweet character and his love for Riley in the story was so sweet. I enjoyed their romance and strength and how good they were for each other. I will also say this book had my heart pounding knowing something was going to happen. I think the story of abuse, starting over, making new friends, and family was tastefully written. I want to read more books by this author.
This book had a lot of potential - good premise and good plot - but the execution failed. The flow of the story and the development of the characters suffered from continuity issues, too much telling and not enough showing, grammar/sentence structure mistakes, and stilted unnatural conversations. Finally, too much of the storyline was focused on the secondary characters which made it difficult to get invested in Blaze and Riley’s story. A good edit would have helped make this a much more enjoyable book and warranted more than barely 3 stars.
Likeable characters and an ok story. I don’t like the side story with Sage being encouraged to date someone she has no interest in to make Colt jealous. It’s immature and it sounds like the real solution would be better communication.
First book I have read from this author (and will not be the last). Blaze helped his step-sister Sage learn to trust again after her father abused her and he found her in their barn. What goes around comes around. Riley is found in the same area in the barn as Sage was but she is not know to any of the family. Riley is running from an abusive ex. Love and safety is what she needs and eventually gets.
This is a story about the most accepting family in Texas. They have already adopted several refugees from abusive families, and when Riley comes along, Blaze finds her hiding in their barn, battered and broken. She is welcomed with open arms. In a family with multiple handsome men, a romance is inevitable. First in a series.
I was given a copy of this book for an honest review. Kaci takes readers on an emotional and highly compelling journey. I fell in love with the characters. I LOVED everything about this book; the banter, the sweet swoon-worthy moments and the heartbreak that made me cry for them. Definitely recommend reading this book (and the series).
