Perfect Distraction

Lauren Taylor isn't thinking about love, especially not with the impossibly attractive man she accidentally spilled coffee all over. He's out of her league and she's focused on finishing her oncology pharmacy residency. She's sworn off men who are too handsome for their own good, anyway. Andrew Bishop can't stop thinking about the gorgeous redhead who crashed into him and then disappeared, even though he should have way more on his mind - like dealing with his Hodgkin Lymphoma diagnosis and finishing out his last year in law school. When Andrew and Lauren run into each other at the cancer center where she's working and he's being treated, they try to keep it professional. They can be friends, and nothing more. But sometimes life has other plans…

This book is the Perfect Distraction to everything going on with the world right now. Absolutely heartwarming and wholesome, I had a constant grin on my face while reading it.

Lauren Taylor is doing her oncology pharmacy residency. First of all, I thought this was so original. I never read anything about this profession before and it was not only a great setting but it provided a lot of material to develop a deeper emotional side to this story.

On a day she's running late she bumps into Andrew Bishop, a super attractive guy at the local coffee shop. But a few minutes later Lauren crosses paths with him again - he's a patient at the cancer clinic she works, and it's seeking treatment for Hodgkin Lymphoma.

Even though there's an obvious connection with Andrew, a few very important things are on the way: First - he's a patient at the clinic Lauren works at. And even though, he is not her patient directly she loves her job too much to put that on the line. Second - Lauren has sworn of attractive men, after being burned in college, she has a theory that the hot ones are too much trouble. Third - he's obviously in a very complicated place in his life and should focus on his treatment, not dating.
So, if a romance is definitely not in the cards, they could be friends, right?

The beauty of Perfect Distraction is that all three issues are addressed in such a delicate and convincing way. Spoiler alert, they do become more than friends, and the journey is so rewarding. I would call this a slow burn, but it's so much more than that. There was something about Allison Ashley's writing that I just found so enticing. I literally read this in one sitting.

This book will make you laugh because the witty banter in it is delightful, cry because it has deep emotional parts, and swoon because it has a beautiful love story.

I'm told this is a debut novel by this author - well, if that's true, I can guarantee she's going to have a long and prosperous career as a writer.
This story was so multileveled, emotionally and educationally, that I don't know where to start. Suffice it to say, this author know how to write emotion, educate about intense medical conditions, and elicit a wide range of emotions from the reader.

Oncology Pharmacist Lauren never thinks the big, handsome guy she just spilled hot coffee on in the coffee shop is going to be someone who will change her life and force her to make decisions she never even considered. Law student and cancer patient Andrew wants to get through his chemo and get on with his life. WHen these two meet, it's not a cliche to say sparks fly and their lives are forever changed.

While reading this story I was struck by the ethical dilemma Lauren found herself in. While not a Physician, she is still a clinician and even though she only has Andrew as a patient very briefly, she thoughts that starting a relationship with him was somehow morally and professional wrong were profound and struck me as one of the most intense conflicts I've read recently in a romance story.

I hate spoiler so I won't tell you what happens, but suffice it to say I think this book is going ot be on a number of must read and bestseller lists this year,
Thank you to netgalley for a sneak peek.
5 exceptionally well deserved stars from me.

“We be-lung together.”

A new-to-me author with a big-hearted story.

Allison Ashley skillfully builds a gripping emotional arc that goes along with a harsh dose of reality, while capturing the excitement, fun and joy of new love. I was mesmerized by the bantering dialogue between Andrew and Lauren as they got to know each other.

Fun-pun word battles between the two lead to sparkling wit and an added dose of delightful sweetness and adorableness. The chemistry between these two is undeniably sizzling.

Andrew is the kind of hero that makes my heart go pitter-patter. He’s facing a battle only time will tell if he is able to win.

Lauren is dedicated to her career and generous with her time and talents. Because of her professional position, she tries to keep Andrew in the friendzone – but he wasn’t having any of that – and his persistence worked double-time to make her his.

In a perfectly balanced writing style, the author has tackled a deeply emotional subject matter without ever losing sight of the beauty of hope and love -- and fun, as well. Vulnerable and easy-to-love characters bring their story to life. The conclusion is immensely satisfying with a sweet and sexy slow burn that you don’t want to miss.

I wish this book had a better cover because it's SO GOOD! It's a slow burn friends to lovers that was truly romantic and made me cry, which is a rarity. The heroine is a clinical oncology pharmacist, not something I knew existed but the author shares this occupation and it definitely shows in the detail we get in the story. There is a meet cute involving spilled coffee before the heroine meets the hero again. As a patient for a treatable form of cancer.

While there's instant attraction, the characters form a friendship and try to keep it from becoming more for ethical reasons, even after he's not technically her patient anymore. (props to the author for giving ethics here the weight and attention they deserve!) They form such a beautiful relationship, communicate well, support each other through everything...I loved it! Definitely a book that is flying under the radar. Not much in terms of on-page steam, but still sex-positive in its approach. Note that there is a lot of graphic medical procedures etc. which may bother some readers, and a teenage side character dies of cancer off page.

A cute contemporary romance with PUNS? All my dreams have come true. Andrew and Lauren are so cute together, and I was so invested in their HEA.

There was a cast of well-developed side characters (and I don't just mean Emma, wink wink) and the hero and heroine's feelings and reactions always felt authentic, not like they were doing things for plot purposes. They feel like real people, and it was like watching two of my friends fall in love and work things out.

Perfect Distraction made me laugh and also made my heart hurt.

This is a quick read because the writing flows so well and you NEED to turn the page and find out what happens next.

Just a really great romance.

Gan jau viņa savā darbā ir šo to redzējusi.

Kā debijas romāns, grāmata ir izdevusies labi. Man patika abi galvenie varoņi, bija arī gaidīšanas trauksme un saprotams iemesls, kāpēc šīm attiecībām nebūtu jānotiek.

Manai gaumei gan nedaudz par pārsaldinātu.

Allison Ashley delivers the perfect blend of sweet, heartfelt, and emotion in Perfect Distraction. Two people have a bit of a “meet cute” then later meet under unusual circumstances. There is immediate attraction but a bit of an ethical dilemma.

It was easy to see that this author has knowledge of the medical field and cancer clinics which made this story believable. As a clinical pharmacist Lauren sees Andrew on his first day of chemo treatment and while she only sees him for one day, she becomes somewhat of a lifeline to him and his family and their feelings grow. They really work hard at remaining just friends and while they spend time as friends volunteering and sharing terrible puns, their relationship blossoms.

This was a slow burn romance but it was done right and considering what Andrew was dealing with and Lauren’s job ethics, it needed to be. Anything else would have been ridiculous. I truly loved watching this couple grow closer while trying to maintain distance.

There is something to be said for a love worth waiting for and for Lauren and Andrew their journey was unique and wonderful. I thoroughly enjoyed each moment in this story.

Let me preface this by saying as a clinical pharmacist who works with oncology patients AND a Hodgkin’s Lymphoma survivor, I wanted to love this book.

But it was just too unrealistic to me. The whole relationship between the main characters seemed forced and repetitive. Maybe I was just expecting the book to reflect more really life experiences, but it just missed the mark completely for me.

It’s got a meet cute. It’s got “we need to stay professional, but I wanna rip your clothes off.” It has puns. So. Many. Puns. It’s really punny, guys. 😂 It has amazing family, wonderful friends, and real love.

I definitely recommend Perfect Distraction ❤️.

Wow. Couldn’t believe that this is a debut author. The writing is impeccable and a totally wonderful story and characters. The story touches on quite a few social mores including harassment at work (Lauren’s co-worker who works his way thru all the female staff and can’t handle that Lauren isn’t interested), both Lauren’s and Andrew’s strained relationship with their respective fathers, and of course cancer and the impact it has on a relationship and life; both the patient and the caregivers. So much all wonderfully bundled in the romance that is Lauren and Andrew.

L & A have a rather inauspicious 1st meeting when she accidentally spills her coffee over him. That introduce us to L’s cute way of “non” swearing – which instantly charms A, of course. Volunteering at a children’s hospital, L has the most amusing way of watching her words.

When they meet again at the cancer center where L works, A is so distracted by L that he hardly hears all the instructions she gives him on his upcoming chemo and the possible side effects. Both are attracted but after a bad experience during college with a handsome jock who only used her to pass his chemistry paper while pretending to be interested in her, L is understandably wary of good looking men, A being a prime example of one who is drop dead gorgeous. A is determined tho (love that in a guy) and perseveres and a friendship quickly blossoms between the two. Both agree to keep things platonic while A is still undergoing therapy but of course... *winks*.

Love the sexual tension – this is a clean story (kisses only) but intensely romantic, all the more so IMHO without any explicit sex which would have spoilt the whole book – which wasn’t angsty or over done in any way.

And mygosh the humour – L is a pun extraordinaire & every so often they get into a battle of puns. And yes, it definitely has a happy ending, wonderfully poignant all the way through and I cried buckets.

This book has all the feels. I can’t wait to read this author’s next book.

Oh, my heart! ♥️ I am feeling ALL THE FEELINGS.

My 5yo daughter has Leukemia so I was interested in the premise of this romance in which the Hero (Andrew) has cancer and the heroine works in oncology as a pharmacist. I wasn't sure what to expect. Would it manage to be realistic without being a total downer to read? Would the author really capture cancer life accurately? What it be a good romance aside from my tie to cancer?

Yes. Yes. And YES. Gah! This book was so good.

First things first. As to the depiction of cancer treatment, this book did well. Andrew had pretty mild reactions to chemo, but one thing I've learned during my experience with cancer is that some people really tolerate chemo well and others don't. There's a vast range of side effects and there's no "normal". So even though his physical experience read as pretty mild to me, it really could be plausible.

The emotional effects of cancer were also well represented (although, again, they seemed a bit mild to me). The author did a great job of capturing the different emotional phases the patient goes through, including getting to a place where you can be snarky and crack jokes about the cancer (which totally happens).

Now, cancer aside. This book is so steamy and sweet and funny and engaging. You LOVE these characters. And it is completely miraculous how freaking HOT this book is, regardless of the fact that it's very PG in content. Just kissing and implied sex. But I legitimately did not feel cheated (and that's saying something because I am LIVING FOR THE SMUT).

Read. This. Book. It needs more hype because it really deserves it!

I recieved an ARC through NetGalley, and as usual all thoughts and opinions are my own.

February is the month of contemporary, and what a perfect time it was to read this one. I didn’t expect to love another cute romance story, but I did really liked our main characters and how the story unfolded, the characters are really well built and really interesting, and real, this is the most important part for me. When characters are able to react to something and it feel authentic and not forced.

There were parts where I laughed, parts where I couldn’t stand the cuteness and parts where it hurt me. But it’s a very well paced novel, which makes it a quick and easy read. The writing was good and filled with puns (which I’m not creative enough to use one to describe this book, but I tried). I read this book in three sittings (which may seem a lot, but it wasn’t). The main reason why it gets the 4 star is because I’d have liked to see the texts in a different format.

I would just like to give a warning to the subject of cancer.

This admittedly had much heavier subject matter than I like to pick up. And I didn’t read the summary which means I was a little blindsided, but that’s okay because this book took over my entire day.

I loved loved loved the swoon. Good heavens the quotable moments melted me. I loved the relationship between Lauren and Andrew. Gosh it was so sweet. I was obsessed with every interaction, every call, text and passing glance. The forbidden love characteristics were perfect and the way Andrew could NOT do anything but love Lauren was amazing.

The banter and tension are top tier and the audiobook was incredible. It’s fast paced and easy to love every moment. I could love on this book all day.

Overall audience notes:
- Contemporary Romance
- Language: low
- Romance: fade to black
- Violence: low
- Content Warnings: cancer is the main theme throughout

This was pretty good. Predictable but sweet. It took a nosedive around 85% when the h/H started to have a who can be the biggest martyr contest. The last 15% of the book was so revoltingly cheesy that I can still smell it. I hate finished this thing. This is not how real adults talk or act. My eyeballs almost rolled out of my head.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Excellent story with a different kind of wounded hero.
A lovely story dealing with a serious issue, “Perfect Distraction”, by Allison Ashley (Entangled: Amara), features a delicious, wounded yet balanced, hero and a confident, giving heroine.
The slow burn romance is sweet, the chemistry and sensuality sizzling, the main characters well fleshed out and relatable, the secondary characters vivid and often annoyingly realistic.
I fell in love with Andrew, handsome, generous and caring, reliable, honourable. Lauren is a great, compassionate heroine, and her job as a clinical oncology pharmacist is so interesting and was such a novelty for me.
I found the story had the perfect balance between hope and the predictable anguish and fears an oncologic disease causes.
I liked the setting – Kansas City – and the vivid, true to life descriptions of the treatment facilities and procedures and the insight into the chemoteraphy effects.
I felt the ethical issues were a bit drawn out in the second half of the story.

🥼strangers to friends to more
🥼coffee shop meet cutes
🥼he’s so possessive
🥼texting banter
🥼forbidden love
🥼found family
🥼i only have eyes for you
🥼pun wars

guys! i am 𝗢𝗕𝗦𝗘𝗦𝗦𝗘𝗗 with lauren and andrew. they meet in a sort of double meet cute, but i don’t really know if the second meeting is so cute considering andrew is getting chemotherapy for cancer and lauren is his pharmacist. 😬 yikes! because of this kind of patient/doctor type of interaction, lauren refuses to go out with andrew even though 1. the chemistry between them is instantaneous 🔥🔥 and 2. their doctor/patient relationship pretty much ends the same day it starts. however, lauren is looking to secure a full time oncology pharmacist position and is afraid a romantic relationship between her and andrew could jeopardize that.

sooooo lauren friend zones andrew and which results in this whole forbidden romance type vibe and i 👏🏼am 👏🏼 here 👏🏼 for 👏🏼 it because the banter, the tension, the flirting between these two gave me butterflies!! i loved their pun wars. they developed such a fun-natured friendship but it was also emotional and they really got to know each other. i truly fell in love with them as they were falling in love and fighting it. the story as a whole is super emotional as andrew is battling cancer and this definitely ramps up the angst, but there were so many wonderful layers to this story that lightened the mood —the bromance between logan and andrew, jeni and lauren’s work beauties, jasmine and the children’s hospital to name a few! the romance is *chef’s kiss* 💋💋. i could gush on and on about my love for this book!! ughhh, my heart! if you like both emotional and light-hearted reads, this is the perfect balance of both and will leave you with butterflies and happy sighs.

4.5 Stars!

Perfect Distraction is the perfect example of how to write a sweet, touching, heartwarming romance story - goes to show you don’t need all kinds of steamy in order for a book to be all kinds of swoony.

Andrew Bishop meets Lauren Taylor at the beginning of his treatment for cancer. He’s immediately smitten, but because she’s initially part of his treatment team as an oncology pharmacist, Lauren is hesitant to get involved with him. But Andrew is determined to have her in his life, even if it means they can only be friends at first. Between his charm and a little help from his twin sister, Andrew and Lauren find love when they least expect it.

There wasn’t a single thing I didn’t like about this story. Andrew is a kind, completely swoony hero who dealt with his illness with strength and humor. He was open about his feelings, even the less-than-pleasant ones, and apologized when he made mistakes. Lauren is compassionate and clever, and I loved her dedication to her career. So often we get heroines who get stupid at the sight of a good looking, charming man, and I appreciate an author who gives us a full description of the hot guy but doesn’t fill paragraph upon paragraph of the heroine waxing eloquent about his hawt bod. LESS PECS MORE PLOT is my motto, and Ms. Ashley nailed it in this story!

But my favorite thing about this book is the relationship development. I love a story where the hero and heroine have a meet cute and their relationship develops organically, at a realistic pace. Insta-love is fun and all, but give me a story where I get to watch the couple get to know each other and work through realistic challenges and conflict (and with maturity!), and I’m sold. Add in a hero who’s willing to be patient and play the long game to get the girl, and I'm a goner!

Allison Ashley is going on my “New Authors to Watch” list. Well, she will be after I create one.😄 It isn’t often you come across a new author who gives a fresh voice to a story with unique characters and an original plot. It’s exciting when you find an author who steers clear of the tired and cliched that’s so prevalent in today’s romances, so I can’t wait to read more from Ms. Ashley!

I actually flip flopped between 3 & 4. Honestly there was a lot in this book that made me roll my eyes! But I must also acknowledge that it brought me out of a reading slump.
It was surprisingly light and sweet considering the subject manner!

I found a lot of stuff was over explained, like actions. I don't think we need a full explanation of how someone maneuvered their hands in order to do something... Unless of course they have very unique methods!

The puns were fun and the romance was beautiful albeit jarring at times. By that I mean decisions were made rather quickly without much buildup.

If you're looking for something a bit lighter and sweet than... Dare I say it? This book just may be the perfect distraction for you!

It was short. It was sweet.

A little too sweet and cheeseball in the second half. I enjoyed the first half much more.

The characters were a little too cookie-cutter and lacked relatable flaws. But it was a cute little read if a little too forgettable.

3.5 / 5 ⭐⭐⭐
0 / 5 🌶️

Andrew (MMC) and Lauren (FMC)

I want to start by saying that I really enjoyed the first two-thirds of this book, pretty much until the third act breakup when it all started to go downhill, imo. Thank goodness the story picked up at the end because this book had so much potential!

I listened to the audiobook, and this story is told from a 3rd person narration 😩🙄🤨, which is my least favorite as it feels impersonal and distant. However, the narrator was fantastic and brought the story to life 👌

I found the plot to be original and not your typical, lighthearted, easy breezy romance novel. 'Perfect Distraction' covers heavier topics such as dealing with illness, going through chemotherapy, experiencing the struggles & the side effects of treatment... It's realistic, sometimes raw, and doesn't have unnecessary fluff, which I appreciate.

The story is about a good-looking MMC called Andrew, who has cancer and how he falls in love with the FMC Lauren, who is an oncology pharmacist at the clinic where he gets his chemotherapy treatment. She tries to fight her feelings for him at first because she thinks that it would be unethical to date him, as he's a patient at her workplace. Eventually, they overcome the hurdles and get together. Their relationship is like a rollercoaster as Andrew must deal with not only his new life as a cancer patient but also discovering what true love is, while trying not to let his illness bring him down and overake his identity. All while he's still on law school, and also working.

Things that I didn't like:
- How Lauren is so insisting about wanting to be secretive about her relationship with Andrew. Hello? You are two grown-ups, consenting adults who don't even directly have a patient/pharmacist relationship at the hospital... grow up, Lauren

- I really disliked the third act breakup, and how she basically emotionally and physically removes herself from their relationship when Andrew needs Lauren's support the most and is in the middle of rounds of chemotherapy to treat his cancer. Especially when his previous girlfriend left him because of him having cancer. Not only is Andrew not angry at her for agreeing to break up (to "protect her from heartbreak"), but he's like a lost pitiful puppy moping around, with 0 pride or self esteem 😩😩😩.

- At one point, Lauren tells Andrew about a common patient that they both cared about who had just passed away, and she STILL somehow makes it about her 🤷🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️.

- There's basically no spice, just lots of s*xual tensión between the two MC's. 🌶

Overall, it was an entertaining read that I'd recommend, but probably wouldn't pick up again.

Happy reading! 📚

I’m about to SHOVE this book down everyone’s throats like it’s my job. WHY ISN’T EVERYBODY TALKING ABOUT THIS BOOK???? Andrew is actually the most ooey gooey cinnamon roll hero. He defines what it means to be the ultimate book boyfriend. I’m so in love with him it’s not even funny. Then we have Lauren who is one of the most smartest, perfect and badass female characters ever. These are two characters with the best banter EVER and their chemistry is off the charts. Also, the side characters are so incredible…. I’m literally so invested in every character and their storylines. It’s a short and sweet read that will give you ALL THE FEELS. I cannot wait to read Home Sweet Mess next!! Allison Ashley, you have outdone yourself with this book. I AM UNWELL

Lauren is focused on finishing school. (I love that she's an oncology pharmacy resident.) Maybe too much so as she's just spilled coffee on a stranger. Or it could be that he's so striking she got distracted. But it's okay, she's on a self-imposed embargo, done with attractive men. The best thing to do is make her getaway and force herself to forget about him.

Andrew can't do the same, though. She made quite an impression on him, one he can't let go of. Even if he has things going on that require his attention. A diagnosis of Hodgkin Lymphoma, for example. All while completing his final year of law school. Yet, she lingers.

Then their paths cross yet again, where both least expect it. A cancer center where she's working and he's being treated. Which means their connection should be ignored due to her job. They can be friends and nothing more. But fate has a better idea.

How will Lauren handle the potential ethical dilemma of having growing feelings for a patient, regardless of how briefly he is one? Will they explore what's between them as Andrew fights his illness? Will Lauren help him through it? Will their love endure despite the obstacles standing in their way? One-click to find out. My lips are sealed.

Perfect Distraction by Allison Ashley comes out next week and is sooo good! It is set mostly in a chemo infusion center and is such a sweet story about choosing love and happiness. It was emotional and such a beautiful story.
-

Lauren clumsily meets a gorgeous man at a coffee shop, spilling her hot drink all over him. She goes on with her day and gets to her job as a pharamcy resident in a cancer ward and what do ya know... hot guy is a patient there, getting his first round of chemo. They can't help but fall in love and ethical boundaries are blurred as she is an employee and he is a patient. This isn't just a love story, but one about family and following your dreams, no matter what the cost.
-

I loved how this was a unique take on a love story. My dad has cancer and has been going through chemo for the last couple of years, so this one really struck a chord with me. Highly recommend it if you're looking for a sweet story. This is Allison's debut novel and I can't wait to read more by her! It comes out 3/23/2020.

Perfect Distraction by Allison Ashley a five-star read that will leave you perfectly distracted. This is my first read from this author, but I will be looking for more as the puns make it all worth it. I love a good pun, and this was inspiring, its not the only fantabulous aspect to this story though, as the romance is top notch and the meet cute delightful as its not as perfect as it could be, its real. The main subject of this story isn’t an easy one for most and I will be honest right now it probably isn’t the best subject for me personally as Cancer affects one in three of us in some way, and right now I am that one. That being said I am so glad I didn’t pass this one up and decided to see the other side as it showed me there can be positivity even in the darkest of moments. Such as when a girl with the name of a pretty flower blooms for the last time, colour and beauty can still be seen. Andrew Bishop faces his greatest challenge, but he faces it with his best side and what a side it is. I will be keeping a big eye out of Allison Ashley as the writing is funny and honest and will warm you from the inside out as its an eggcellent read.

Lauren can’t believe she’s met the most beautiful man she’s ever laid eyes on at the coffee shop on her way to work. She’s a pharmacy resident with a passion for oncology, and the patient she is set to council on chemotherapy happens to be the guy she saw at the coffee shop. Andrew. Attraction? Yes. Distraction? Maybe. But, how about fate? Love?⁣

What a down to earth, realistic, and just all-around heartfelt debut novel! It picked up on the challenges of cancer, all the empathy, risk, worries, burden, but most of all how positivity can go a long way. The romance and chemistry between Lauren and Andrew, and all the PUNny banter—SO cute, and made me think of @lemonsandbooks actually, lol. It was a slow burn and a bit of forbidden love, and if you’re looking for steam, it was pretty PG-13. Oh what a great read packed with great dialogue, and I thought the funny parts brought lots of light to a serious topic.⁣

Thank you BookSparks for having me on this tour!

A full 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩 five stars to this amazing debut novel! The story begins with a meet cute at a local coffee shop. Lauren spills coffee on “the hot man”, Andrew. Little do they know, they’ll be meeting again shortly.
Lauren works as an oncologist pharmacist at the local hospital. Andrew was recently diagnosed with lymphoma. He was there for his first meeting with the doctor. You’ll never guess who the pharmacist is that explains all of the drugs to him? It’s Lauren!
Andrew and Lauren have a special relationship that grows throughout this book. They go through chemo treatments, visits to children’s hospital, and patient-provider confidentiality. This makes for a difficult time! You’ll have to read to see if they can make it through all the challenges.
Thank you to Netgalley, Booksparks, the author and publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
