He betrayed her once. When the call to become a Pinkerton agent comes with a mandate that they marry, will she let him into her heart again?

Growing up as the daughter of a renowned paleontologist, Meg Ashwood never wanted for potential suitors, but none of them caught her attention for long--until she fell for Ephraim Porter. Hard. Then learned that Ephraim wasn't even his first name. Carl Porter was a Pinkerton agent, and he'd been hired to watch over her! Her humiliation complete, Meg could only be grateful to know she would never have to see him again. Or does she?

Carl Ephraim Porter never wanted to lie to Meg Ashwood. The beautiful but spoiled young woman was like a drink of water in a hot desert for the Pinkerton agent who had lost his wife and little boy. Unfortunately, when the day of reckoning came, she wanted nothing to do with him. But that was several months ago. Now Carl's being asked to train Meg, Archie Gordon's newest recruit--as her temporary husband. The only problem is they're caught up in a case that requires them to work in an insane asylum. In order for them to have a second chance at love, Carl is going to have to do more than pull out his charms. He's going to have to lay everything on the line for Meg--including his own life.

Read each clean romantic mystery novella in The Pinkerton Matchmaker series and go along with these couples as they find their quarries--and the love of their lifetimes.

Can Carl earn forgiveness?

This is a continuation of a plot that began in a previous book where Meg and Carl were support characters...a fantastic reason to read the series in order! Both Meg and Carl stumbled from their previous encounter with a broken heart, so when they meet again their defences are up and neither is willing to give the other a chance. Fortunately Archie has other plans and they must work together in the bowels of hell to solve the most haunting of crimes. This gives them (and us) the opportunity to see a softer, more likeable side of both of them, Meg proves she is not as shallow and selfish as she previously appeared and Carl realises he can love again as he falls for his wife! Whilst the plotline is heartwrenching, their love story is a sweet addition to the series. I read this on Kindle Unlimited.

Meg, becomes a Pinkerton detective

Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2020

Format: Kindle Edition

This is book 45, in the Pinkerton detective series.

We have met Meg, in an earlier book.
The Meg, in this book, has matured.
Ready to take control of her life, Meg, is asked to become a Pinkerton agent.

This book is very good. It has been written by an experienced writer.
Julia, just makes this book flow, so delightfully.
The characters are colorful, and play their parts in the story well.

Please read the authors blurb on this book.
Julia, has written a really good preview, for this book.
I would prefer not to spoil it for you

This was the very first book I read in the Pinkerton Matchmaker series. I really enjoyed it the first time and am I glad I decided to go back and read every book, from the beginning, in order.
I decided to reread Meg when I came to it again in the series. It was nice to have the background of the series familiar now.
I suggest at least reading Hallie's story (#32) before Meg's so that you understand her background. I found Meg was rather spoiled and a bit annoying in Hallie's story so it was nice to see her character develop and mature in her own story. It was also nice to see her and Carl (Ephraim) spending time together again.
For their case, they have to go undercover at an Insane Asylum. Can they complete their case and manage to heal their hurt from their previous time together?
A clean, sweet romance.

Romance and action

Rating: 4.5 stars

What I liked or found interesting:

• I liked getting glimpses into Carl's and Meg's thoughts. They were so funny.
• I liked the storyline with missing people being harbored in an asylum. The horrors related about asylums were so true for that time period.
• The story had excellent editing and it flowed smoothly.
• There was some action.
• I like that Carl and Meg were smart agents.
• This was a clean read. No sex or swearing. I appreciated that.

I have really enjoyed the Pinkerton Matchmaker series. They have been great reads.

Meg and Carl

Sweet historical romance with a mystery to solve. Meg and Carl have a past but are forced to marry if they want to work together as Pinkerton agents. Meg finds out that investigation can be far from glamorous as they uncover the atrocities at a mental asylum. Will they find the missing person they're looking for? More importantly, will they find love? Interesting read as the abuse within the asylum are based on historical facts.

I enjoyed this book very much. I loved the romance and the sleuth work was so fun. The characters were enjoyable and heart touching. The asylum was scary, and a horrible place for anyone to be. I was on the edge of my seat worried for Carl and Meg. Lots of action that will have you holding your breath and keep you from putting the book down. Such a great story!
Was given a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.

It was good to see this "grown up" side of Meg. Julia Ridgmont set this book in an asylum, one of the saddest and most abused resource in history. The abuse of mental patients and those that families just wanted to put away is truly a blight on the human history. I'm sure Meg and Carl saw things that would haunt them the rest of their lives. I enjoyed this book and the extent the agents went to solve their case.

Meg used to the life in Boston thinking a young man was ready to propose. Instead he left. Agents from Pinkerton watched over her while her father was on an exhibition. Leading her to come to Denver to become an agent.
She sure didn’t expect to see the man she had been dating here as an agent also. Archie the head boss, has a case for the two of them.
Another enjoyable case ....Will love come this time.

Meg was Carl’s job until he fell in love with her. Carl had Meg’s heart until he betrayed her so she gave him another broken heart. Seemed like that was the end of Carl and Meg but then the Pinkerton Matchmaker got involved. They had put aside their past and their hurts to save two people and uncover a corrupt healthcare system. They did the job and Carl got his girl back.

Nevermore

Asylums during the 1800's and even into the 1900's were a person's worst nightmare.
Meg was determined to proved to herself she could do anything.
Carl was flabbergasted when he saw Meg at the agency.
A great read!

Meg and Carl have history together and aren’t very happy to be forced to work together as a married couple. And their case isn’t without danger. Can they find the missing person and work on their HEA at the same time?
I was waiting for this story and it didn’t disappoint. I love this series!

Carl and Meg

Second time around can they get it right? Although they fell in love once before Carl had been hired by Meg's Mom to guard her and when she found out went ballistic so he left. - Babs

They had a falling out when they first met.

I liked the story how they solved the case after they were forced to marry for her to be a Pinkerton Agent. Also how they explained about how the people were being treated at that time in insane asylums.

Thank you😁

I have read all the Pinkerton Matchmaker books that I could get my hands on. 😀 I truly think that the ones beginning with the dinosaurs were the best. Thank you again.
