Grace Miller.
Quiet.
Pushover.
Or Not. Grace Miller is a girl who's followed the rules her entire life. Grace has avoided guys like Dan Swanson her entire life. That is until Dan Swanson decides to fight his way in, which is what he's good at. Fighting. But she can't be a pushover with Dan. A guy like Dan would walk straight through her. It's time to change things up.

Dan Swanson.
Arrogant.
Jock.
Hot head. Dan Swanson doesn't have time for girls like Grace. Especially if said girl is the daughter of the principal who expelled him from school. But now Dan has her in his sights. This should be easy game, right? Wrong.

Anyone looking from the outside in would say these two were born to hate each other, but sometimes the heart has a different story to tell.

Grace Miller hasn't seen Dan Swanson since her principal father expelled Dan from high school. Now, they're attending the same college. As in high school, Dan is the star quarterback with plans, and the skills, to get into the NFL. Grace is an aspiring writer. Their first meeting doesn't go well -- Dan is a jerk -- and Grace walks away. Their second meeting, though better, doesn't end well either.

Jump forward a year and Grace is renting a place off campus and works at a bar to pay the rent. Her landlord, Chad, owns both the bar and the house with the room she rents. In walks Dan. Turns out, he needs a place to live so Chad is renting him the extra room in the house. Grace and Dan get close in the few weeks they room/live together, but misunderstandings cause Grace to shut down and Dan to move out.

Jump another year and Grace has graduated early. Her first book has sold a half-million copies and she's contracted for more. Dan, on the other hand, has been expelled from college. However, he's been given a second chance with his education and with football as the reserve QB at a smaller college. He has almost given up on his dreams of the NFL.

Dan and Grace meet up again after Dan's new team plays his old team. Still friends with his old receiver, Jake, they plan to have dinner after the game. Grace is invited by her friend Mia, now Jake's girlfriend. Past misconceptions about one another and misunderstandings cause arguments at this meeting, too. However, someone breaks into Grace's "flat" and Dan offers to drive her home. Their time together gives them a chance to work out a couple of things and they wind up together -- finally.

But... Will things continue to go smoothly? What happens when someone from their past rears up and threatens their happiness and Dan's future? Will they get their happily ever after?

I'm on the fence with this book. The author's notes mention this is his/her first book. It's not a bad story, kind of sweet in a way. However, the disjointed storytelling and sloppy editing detracts from the enjoyment.

And, I know that romances need some obstacles, but it annoys me when seemingly intelligent people act stupidly. For example, Dan and Grace have finally admitted they have feelings for one another, but he still goes out with his friend Rachel. When questioned about it, Dan never tells Grace that Rachel is just a friend. She, then, continues to believe he's stringing along one or both of them. Again, I know it's a "romance" obstacle, but poor communication doesn't bode well for a relationship. Then, there's what I think is supposed to be a sexy scene when Grace forgets to bring her towel into the bathroom when she showers. She asks Dan to get one and he turns it into a joke. She decides not to play his baby game and leave the bathroom holding a handtowel over her bits and pieces. Why not just put your PJs back on? They'd cover more than the little towel. Again, I get that romances will have scenes like this, but...

All in all, I was satisfied with the book, 2.5 stars. I rounded down to two stars because of the sloppy editing. It appears the book was written first using UK vernacular and verbiage. When it was "translated" to US English, some things weren't changed so we get a "carpark" instead of a parking lot, "flat" instead of apartment, etc. UK spellings (apologising, realising/realise, recognises, armour...) also pop up now and then. I don't think US readers would have had issues reading this with a UK setting and Dan playing soccer (UK football).

On top of that, there are typos (misspellings as well as missing capitalization); quotation marks go back and forth between single and double; weird sentence wording (e.g., my skirt, which is already way too short that Mia made me wear gets pushed up even higher); the use of "I" as an objective pronoun; etc. -- some of which would have been caught by passing the text through a simple spelling and grammar check. Then, in the middle of chapter 15, Rachel suddenly become "Jade" and Grace has a bookstore??? I get that some of this is nitpicky, but it distracts the flow of reading.

As I said, I was satisfied with the story. Nothing noted above would keep me from checking out other offerings by TS Florence. Nor would it stop me from recommending this to others -- though I would warn them about the editing.
