Teenager Jackson Porter doesn’t even realize how much his life sucks, only because he’s never really thought about it. But that all changes when the new girl, Diana Shepherd, shares her magical ability with him: together, they explore the world through the eyes of wild animals. This magic unlocks Jackson’s full potential, but it also opens his eyes to the harsh realities of his life. That’s when he embarks on the journey of growth that might one day lead him out of his dreadful small town life—if he’s willing to make the difficult changes that it would take.

One of the best things that DeCarolis does with his debut YA novel, "Coywolf," is to keep it grounded. While magic is a very important component, it does not dominate this story, nor does it demand the reader to take flights of fancy culled straight from the WB Channel. Instead, the adventures of Jackson Porter are rooted in the locked psyche of your average teenager.

In each chapter, we find Jackson fumbling with the keys of his own misery as he unlocks the truths of his existence: ultimately, that it sucks. Hard. In this way, we readers are able to delve into a variety of points of view, all of which tie the corridor of his oppression together in a very enlightening manner. But by shifting perspective, Jackson (and we readers by proxy) are given a much wider realm of contemplation. Jackson screws up. A lot. But isn't that what being an adolescent is all about?

DeCarolis' writing sensibilities are consistent and comfortable. They bring us into the story and tease a promise that keeps us reading even at the end of each chapter. Because of this, I could not put down "Coywolf" until I had finished it. At 263 pages, it makes for a single serving that teases future stories, as well as a recurring mystery that you just yearn to unlock.

Opening up "Coywolf" is like a romp with a good friend you recently haven't seen nearly enough of. You know the adventure is there, and you can't wait to get started because you know that every step of your journey will be rich as a trek through nature. This is an excellent coming-of-age story with clear rules to a very worldly magic.

Highly recommended!
