Ok. As someone who’s read enough poetry for a lifetime, this little collection felt lackluster. However, if I set my expectations aside, this is a great introductory book for those looking into reading more poetry, prose, and verse. It still astounds me that I’ve read so much poetry that certain poets become familiar.

A slim, quiet collection of poems to bring pause and mindfulness to your day. I really enjoyed 25 of the poems in this book and I’m sure I’ll go back and revisit these poems again in the future. I loved the construction and cover of this MacMillan volume. So pretty!

This was fine,
I like to rhyme,
I found a few keepers,
Some made me rub my peepers,
Emily Dickinson was my fave,
Her way with words I do crave,
Adore, I do, to write such things,
The book is a song and her poetry sings.

What a beautiful collection of poems, fully encompassing the theme of stillness and covering centuries of wordcraft. This made me feel so hopeful for not only myself but for humanity as a whole, and genuinely felt like a cooling balm for stress. My only criticism is that the poems were all classic and it could have done with an injection of modern poetry; but, at the same time, it is reassuring to know that past generations deal with the same worries and concerns that we do.

Randomly picked from the poetry shelf in the fabulous Toppings book shop in St Andrews whilst enjoying a pot of tea with Eniola, Noah & Niki. The first one I went to was a gem- “Friendship” by Dinah Maria Craik 😍

my favourite poems out of this collection were the earth-child in the grass (katherine mansfield), trust (d. h. lawrence), consolation (robert louis stevenson), and beautiful old age (d. h. lawrence).

“He who binds himself with a joy, does the winged life destroy, but he who kisses the joy as it flies lives in eternity's sunrise.” William Blake
A poem that stuck out to me on the fleeting nature of joy.
