She was like a living flame, an all-consuming fire, lighting up the way so he could find everything he'd lost!

When widowed Nicholas MacPherson, Earl of Rothbury, returns from a two-year pilgrimage and finds himself in desperate need of a governess for his son, the last person he wants to see at his door is Julianna Feathers, the lass he had loved since he was a child servant in her father’s castle. He doesn’t want her back in his life, but his son needs her. Soon, Nicholas realizes that he needs her, too. Her familiar smiles and the ease he feels when they speak—even to argue—becomes harder to resist. But he doesn’t trust love. Her love. Still, when she stirs the rubble in search of his heart, the heart she once knew, he is helpless to stop her.

Julianna Feathers once lived the life of the privileged, but that was before the Scots attacked her castle and killed everyone in it. Before her father’s debts left her penniless and without title. Before she married a monster. Dreams of the love of her youth gave her strength to run, to free herself and find him. She knows him as William Stone. She let him go once because she was a coward. But she has changed. She has grown up, and she wants him back…until she meets him and decides she doesn’t like the earl with his new name and the diamond-hard set of his eyes against her. But she sees him beneath the rocks and rubble and she resolves to help him find his way out. Falling in love with him all over again is the easy part. Being torn from his arms by an enemy from their past is something else entirely.

Will their love survive?

I adore Paula Quinn’s books , she writes with passion and spirit , this book is no exception, brilliant!

The Characters Of Nicolas/ William & Julianna are so intriguing and addictive from the start , you can’t wait to hear their stories and follow their lives .

Elias his son is sweet and so troubled by his loss of a mother and nurse . I loved that Julianna was a bridge between him and his dad .

Rauf , Agnes , Margaret . Beringaria , Torren . All written with an ease to the reading and understanding of the place they take in the story.

And the evil doer , well he was excellent as all those need to be, adding that element of treachery and tension.

All together a fantastic romantic adventure that keeps you hooked and turning those pages at a fast rate .

Five stars for sure .

I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review

I was looking forward to this second-chance romance after meeting William/Nicholas in the first book. Unfortunately, there was little romance. Just when I thought the H/h were going to get to know each other and learn to love again, his keep (home?) is under attack, They get their HEA but I just felt like circumstances in the last 30% forced them to be together. I would have liked more angst and for them to reconnect on their own.

A Heart of Stone. Can it be turned into something else? Will it ever love again?
A true heart wrenching story that adds another amazing addition to the Heart os Highlands series. Paula Quinn has given so much in this story that brings alive two people that knew each other as children and had suffered so much in their lives.
Her father had been Governor of Berwick, before Robert the Bruce's men seized the castle and slain her father and all the people. She was working to earn enough to find William Stone, her father's servent. His last words to her had been "Julianna, I have loved you my whole life. I will never love anyone but you. Do not sentence me to such a lonely life." This spoken to her when she had taken santuary at the abbey and she had refused to go with him. She was to marry a man of means.
Now in a trick of fate, as she looked for him she took a job as a governess to a child because she thought she would find word of William.
Yes she found him. Broken, scarred, untrusting and not wanting her back in his life.
A journey of the soul that can sometimes be mended with love and care. But would they ever find their way?
Be still my heart. Yes, a journey well taken.

This one kept my interest and attention until there was about 20% left. The very last bit was all over the place, introduced too many new characters and had too many last minute plot twists for me. I will read the next book in the series.

I love how Paula Quinn writes from the heart, it always shows in her stories. I have read all the other books in this series but for some reason I had missed this one! Gasp!!! When I found it on my Kindle, I started reading it right away. Oh my, what a story!! My heart absolutely ached for William/Nicholas and I have to admit, I did shed a few tears for him. As for Julianna, she turned out to be such a powerful and strong woman, determined to get her lost love back.

The story is fast paced and with the many twists and turns, you just never know what's going to happen next! Simply put, I loved this story and really had a hard time putting the book down until the last page was read. Definitely worth a 5 star rating!

annoying heroine

Heroine is super annoying. She’s afraid to go with the hero when he’s poor, she’s afraid to kill her husband, she’s afraid of her brother in law, etc. She whines incessantly and makes a lot of demands as a servant and stranger. Getting a toddler to stop throwing a fit doesn’t make you his parent or give you the right to boss everyone around. The hero was the only redeeming part of the story but I kept finding myself wishing his wife hadn’t died because she seemed like a loyal brave and fierce partner that truly deserves our hero.

Nicholas MacPherson, Earl of Rothbury, returns home from a two-year pilgrimage and finds his son without a governess. His son does nothing but scream and cry as he sees his father, wearing a long wild beard, that turns the castle into a ear-piercing nightmare. Now he needs to find a governess as soon as possible as nothing calms his son. Julianna Feathers once lived the life of privilege, but that was before the Scots raided and killed everyone in her father’s castle. After she lost everything, she married a cruel monster of a man that abused her and treated her as a servant. Julianna dreamed of her former love, known as William Stone, and that gave her strength to survive. After the death of her husband, she recovered in a convent and made her living by writing and delivering messages for clients. She learns of a governess position and decided to try for the position. But as life would have it, a cruel turn of events, happen again. Paula Quinn has provided us with a page turning adventure that grows with each page. What a wonderful read.

Love for a lifetime

Nicholas aka William loved Juliana as a child all the way until he married left his son after his wife died birthing him! Juliana has spent her last coin searching for William aka Nicholas! She believes she is a widow and never forgot him! Juliana at first comes off as demanding and insensitive! She thinks that Nicholas should just fall into her arms after their reunion! She does not want to remember or acts like she doesn't remember her betrayal of him at the Abbey! She later married a monster and it is still unclear but enough is known that he treated her beyond brutal and she was lucky to escape! Juliana even towards the end comes off as somewhat haughty and men are smitten with her beauty! I didn't see enough beauty inside of her! Nicholas gave in too easily as well! There are several truths revealed that tie up loose ends! Juliana is my least favorite of the heroines in this series!!!

Julianna is determined to find the one man she truly loved, William Stone. Going from a life of privilege to a life of servitude has made Julianna grow up and realize what’s important in her life. When a governess job opens up for Lord Rothbury Julianna goes to apply hoping to find William working there also. What she finds is not what she expects. William is none other than Nicholas, Lord Rothbury. When Nicholas sees Julianna he is stunned and wants her gone. He can’t have her around as she is the person he has loved since he was a child. He does not want her in his life stirring up old feelings and memories. This was such a wonderful story. I felt so sorry for Nicholas and Julianna we were pulled apart by circumstance beyond their control. There was so much to this story. This is also the third book in a series but also a stand alone. I would definitely recommend this book and also the others.

Julianna Feathers left the convent after her abusive husband died there. She's earning a living by writing and delivering messages.  There is a possibility that this latest message could be a chance at a good job.  Also she is hoping to find the one man she has loved her whole life, the one she sent away.
Nicholas MacPhearson has had a very hectic few years.  He found his brothers and lost his wife.  He did not handle that well.  Now he is home and his son is screamin in fear of him all the time.
This is a very exciting adventure.  The characters are strong and loveable. You will fall for them on the first page.  Lots of twists and turns and family complications give us plenty to enjoy.
There is a lot of back story that comes in previous books in the series.  I have read them so found this more enjoyable than I think it would be on it's own.
I loved it.

Book 3 William/Nicholas's story

This series has been one of the best I have read. This is book 3. If you haven't read the first 2 books in the series, I strongly recommend you do. You wont regret it.
As usual, Paula makes you laugh, makes you sigh and makes you cry. There's also that aha moment or where you say, I didn't see that coming. That happened twice in this story and I didn't see either one of them coming. I love when an author surprises me.
This is the story of the 3rd McPherson brother, Nicholas and the girl he's loved his entire life,Julianna. You meet both of them in book 1 and knew then their story would come.
I will also say the last paragraph in the book was one of the best endings to a story ever. That's what finally brought the tears.
Well done Paula. Can't wait for your next series.

Julianna has spent years regretting her words to William at their last meeting. Vowing to find him, she just happens to find that a position has opened at Lismoor Castle. Hoping to find information regarding William, she makes it to Lismoor and becomes the governess for William-now known as Nicholas. Nicholas is angry and hurt to find Julianna in his home. He allows her to stay as his son, Elias, has become attached to her.
There are many, many secrets that are revealed in this story. There were many tense moments (for the readers) just wondering exactly how these two would ever have their happily ever after. This is a great read and a wonderful addition to the “Hearts of the Highlands” series.

Crazy good Read

This book is a wonderful step in this trilogy. I know all three brothers suffered immeasurably but Nicholas’ story hurts the most for me. He lost everyone, EVERYONE he ever loved and then after running from the pain he returns to raise a 2year old motherless son who is terrified of him . This book is heart wrenching. I literally cried a couple times throughout the book. BUT I also smiled and got good happy tears watching beautiful Julianna, who had also suffered loss, use her love for Nicholas and her inner strength to chip away at Nicholas’ defenses. I love this love story. I think it’s my favorite of the three so far in the series. But keep a box of tissues handy when you read it. You won’t be sorry you did.

Widowed Nicholas MacPherson, Earl of Rothbury, returns from a two-year pilgrimage and finds himself in desperate need of a governess for his son. Penniless and without a title after the Scots attacked her castle and killed everyone Julianna Feathers is looking for a new job when she hears a new governess is needed. What she doesn’t expect is to see her childhood friend and the one man she loved William Stone standing before her looking for a governess. There’s a lot of history and love between these two and its fun watching them fall in love a second time around as they navigate the twist and turns of this romance story. An excellent romance and one I voluntarily read and reviewed.

A Nurses Love Was the beginning

Nicholas MacPherson, Julianne Feathers and Nurse Berengaria lives were all intertwined. Julianna wanted her old life back and becoming governess for Lord Nicholas child was the first step. Love had almost destroyed Nicholas and he did want Julianne working with his child. Their destiny had been decided a long time ago by the Scots and they were finally free. This beautiful love story will pull your heart strings and you will love every page.

Stone's Heart

Nicholas and Julianna have a history. William Stone had suffered much from the age of 2. Yet there were 2 people who ha made his life bearable. With time even they were lost to him. Brothers Torin and Cain have become great Scots warriors and over come their past. Nicholas is finally face to face with his past can he find love or keep searching for what he lost.

Good Story Again

I will say the first half was slow to develop to the point it had me wondering what would happen & when. Finally the plot picked up and had some interesting unexpected twists. I think the end was wrapped up too quickly. But I Do Enjoy Paula Quinn's books and recommend any of them to everyone.

An unsatisfying romance that is interrupted by a jumble of disorienting scenes about halfway - and right up until the end. We don't really get to connect to the characters at all. I'm so disappointed because I love this author.

I really liked this one a lot.  We have William Stone, a.k.a Nicholas MacPhearson, and Julianna Feathers, the woman he has loved since he was a servant in her home as a child.  She has also loved him her whole life, but events out of their hands kept them a part and then her fears when they reconnected years later, continued to keep them a part. Now she shows up at his home, not knowing it is his, to become a nanny to an infant boy.  When she realizes Nicholas is her William, she sets out to prove her love, but he doesn't make it easy. He has been burned too many times and doesn't want to love anyone ever again. When his home is attacked and she is taken by a bully from their childhood, he sets out to rescue her and in so doing comes to realize he never stopped loving her. Their story had so many twists and turns and action and surprises. This one is definitely my favorite in the series so far.  Loved Nicholas and Julianna and their story from start to finish.

As a lover of relationship angst, I definitely got my heart’s full here, folks. Nicholas, the hardheaded, handsome, hand and heart wringing, hero, made sure of that. Julianna, the heroine, served it up, as well. She was more steadfast though in aspects I really can’t go into least I give too much away.

The back and forth banter and glances/glares ricocheted from his hatred, longing, to uncertainty, back to hatred/denial, accusations, to understanding, finally resting on reconciliatory when all facts get revealed. Danger lunged at them, too, which had them fighting to live and love each other another day.

Hired to care for a two year old child birthed by a now deceased woman, who replaced Julianna in Nicholas’ life and heart for a brief time, isn’t a set-up I’m fond of. Maybe it was because this go around these two have been through so much in their separate, hard luck lives I couldn’t help but root for them to be together now. Granted, Julianna had her choice in the past but let the current circumstances, doubts, and obvious fear of their future sway her to a poor marital decision of her own. She regretted but owned that mistake though and paid dearly for the consequences. She became a stronger not weaker person because of it.

I stayed fully engaged until an out of their control separation had me disoriented at times in trying to keep up/follow it all, mostly due to the new characters who popped up, change of locations of this separated couple, and jumping back and forth to what was happening to them. I can’t shake the feeling the writing slipped there, folks.

Overall, I’m glad things worked out for these meant to be together lovebirds. Fate and destiny finally did decide to give them their HEA.

Romance Safety Gang:

Title: Heart of Stone, Series: Hearts of the Highlands (Book 3), Author: Paula Quinn, Pages: 222, stand-alone but part of a series, lots of relationship angst, second chance, love to hate back to love, married other people, hand/heart wringing laird hero, resilient/armed to kill if necessary heroine, steamy scenes, may not be romance safe for some, great author I always enjoy.

Book 1 - Heart of Ashes
Book 2 - Heart of Shadows
Book 3 - Heart of Stone
Book 4 - Lion Heart

3,75 stars.
Another installment of this "historical" series is some kind of "second chance" romance but the elaborate intrigue sometimes is so complicated that with only minor shortcuts in description becomes quite unclear at times.
All of this seems more like "James Bond in tights" than Medieval romance and with all the prudence on top, it's more difficult to get into the action.

Second chance romance that should have spent more time on reigniting the romance. The relationship between the MMC and his son is sorely underdeveloped. The twists at the end felt unnecessary and overly villainous. I lost track of who was where, who all the late newcomers, and whether they could be trusted.

This story a had lot of possibilities. I had read the previous books in the series and knew how she broke the heart of the hero. This heroine joins a short list of book characters that I detested. I actually rooted against her due to her being so spoiled, smug and superficial. The attempt at her redemption, due to changed circumstances falls far short. I cringed every time she believed herself blithely able to capture the love of the hero again. Smug and self involved sums up the heroine. Wish the hero would have had some more backbone in falling for her again. He deserved better.

Premise was really good until all the plot points became convoluted and I don't even know what's happening anymore. Such a waste
