Flint, by Carolyn Ward-Daniels.

A moving, intriguing family saga.

This is the first book I have read by this author, and it won’t be my last.
What a wonderful, memorable story.
I was completely enthralled throughout the narration which weaved intrigue back and forth from 1949 to the 1970’s.

Jed Flint is a strong likeable man with a big heart, respected by the community. His life is turned upside down after a horrendous underground pit disaster happened at the colliery. Men are killed and life changes for many families. Some men seek new business opportunities while other’s turned to more dubious means for obtaining money and position.

Secrets, lies and deceit abound, in this well written story of love, misdeeds and justice.
I enjoyed every chapter, especially those depicting Jed and Christopher. An emotional story with a satisfying ending.

Highly recommended.

A Masterful and Unforgettable Family Epic
This sweeping saga follows parallel storylines of three families in different decades. Their tales are interwoven throughout and draw you in as they draw together. The story’s depth, the emotive plot, and the richly defined characters reminded me of a favorite classic, The Poldark Series by Winston Graham. I was completely drawn into the story and couldn’t put the book down. I adored strong and true Jed Flint. The rollercoaster ride of his life was enthralling and heartbreaking. The appalling and cruel motivations of Grace and John made me cringe, they were so well portrayed. I particularly enjoyed watching Christopher develop from a small boy, with whimsical musings, to the pillar of strength I could see in him all along. The world around these rich characters is so clearly described, I could easily visualize it. The dialog is charming and fitting, adding authenticity to the story. This book was lovingly researched and crafted. Beautiful writing, masterful plot, touching turmoil, and gratifying triumph. It stays with you long after you close the book. I highly recommend this read!

Character driven gem

When Jed Flint saves two men’s lives in a mining accident, they are indebted to him and promise they will help with anything, he need only ask.

The book follows two timelines, one set in the early fifties and one heading into the early seventies. At first, it’s not known how these two stories are connected, but all is revealed as we see Jed’s life unfold.

Jed’s life was fascinating, a wonderful mix of how hard work and determination mixed with a strong character and solid morals can get you far in life, but even someone who seems so solid on business can make terrible mistakes in their personal life.

And Christopher’s story was just as compelling. Forever the underdog, but with just as much morality as Jed. These characters were the type you would love to know, and aspire to be.

Of course, every story has the less desirable characters. This one had a few. Snooty Grace who cared only for money, and her jumped up little sod of a kid who I could have happily punched in the face every time he opened his mouth. They were bad enough, but even they didn’t compare to the totally despicable John Waddington. I waited the whole book to see him get his comeuppance, and I wasn’t disappointed.

Five star read for any fan of character driven stories.

This is the second book I’ve read by this author. A gripping novel that captures the essence and grit of 70s nostalgia. The story is the first in a series built around overcoming ruthless people and winning against the odds. But, for me, I loved that it transported me to a time of seaside holidays and simple days. The story is compelling and poignant. It’s about ordinary people and wanting more than life has offered you. It covers morality and it’s told against the evocative backdrop of 60s and 70s life. The vivid cultural nuances of the time add a rich layer of authenticity, making the narrative more immersive. The book opens with a detailed description of conditions down the pit and highlights how hard the miners had it—hard to believe this lifestyle was still happening as recently as forty years ago. The description is sublime.

The characters are well-developed, some with integrity in a world driven by greed and ambition, others who are not nice. The book highlights differences in their characters, leading to the choices they make. Grace is horrible and Trevor is my favourite character, while Christopher is lovely. They are all distinct from each other and are human enough to feel real. We explore complex themes while being engaged with evocative storytelling and attention to detail. This is a must-read for anyone who enjoys a well-crafted narrative shot through with nostalgia.

Jed Flint is a big man. Big in stature but even bigger in heart. After risking his own life to save two friends from a terrible mining disaster, he decides to change his life. We follow these three men, Jed, Joe and Nev, and their families over the years, and watch as they struggle through hard times in northern England from the fifties onwards. We travel with them to seaside towns and burgeoning caravan parks where the miners can have a cheap holiday and get clean air in their lungs. (We even have the accents!) Jed starts to rise in the world but still holds fast to his morals. Then there is John (Trevor), the son of one of the men he saved, who is not so blessed, being driven by greed. I must admit to being transported back to my childhood. Wagon Wheels! Blackjacks! And my all-time favourite, Custard Creams. We can see, taste and smell the eras the author is writing about. This is a story of ordinary people wanting more. People you feel you know. Of morals, avarice, and a lot of warmth. And a few surprises! Highly recommended.

A rags to riches story of working class families in the north of England during the sixties and seventies, this book was highly enjoyable. The lives of the families are blighted by uncouth characters; greedy, selfish, and somtimes dangerous. I particulary liked the character of the kind-hearted Jed Flint. Beautifully written and I will certainly read more from this author.

Charming & Nostalgic Drama

Set in two time periods of the late 1940s/early 1950s and the late 1960s/early 1970s this flicks between the two telling the story from the point of view of three different families. It appears the link between them all is very tenuous despite a tragic mining disaster at the start where Jed Flint one of the miners saves two of his colleagues and then they are go their separate ways. However over the course of the story it soon becomes clear via tragedy, family drama and tales of love and deceit that there is something else, something very special that links these families. The writing is brilliant as the stories of three families are expertly crafted and interwoven to make one beautiful tale. I loved the nostalgia and the realistic feeling of the different time periods. A great deal of research must have been done to get that just right. I throughly enjoyed reading this and can’t wait to read the sequel.

What a fantastic story! I enjoyed every page and couldn’t put the book down. Set in the North of England, in a mining community, the story begins with Jed Flint saving the lives of two of his fellow workers. Jed then leaves the mine and sets out to seek his fortune. The characters, some good and some bad are so skilfully developed that the reader can fully appreciate their many emotions – sincerity, loyalty, love, greed, anger – they are all in this wonderful story. The book draws you in from the very first page and, with many surprises along the way, refuses to let you go until you have finished. This author is a talented storyteller, and I have already downloaded and look forward to the next two books in the series.

An exceptional novel!

This is an exceptional read! I quickly turned page after page wanting to know what would happen next!
Having grown up in the north of England during the sixties and seventies, I could relate to the miners and their families who play an important role in the story.
There are some wonderful characters in this book, and some real nasty ones too. It's a book that draws you in more and more with several surprises along the way, and a very satisfying end.
Highly recommended!

I really enjoyed reading Flint. The scope of it is quite breath-taking with humble beginnings, ambition, success and failure, on a spectrum of storytelling which had me enthralled. A great read which I would highly recommend.
