I’ve been able to predict a couple things in this series, but at the beginning of this one, I had no clue how the Conspiracy was going to manage their way out of this one. In fact, I had no idea how any part of it was going to turn out. As the second book, there was a lot of laying out groundwork for the next book. This was a little more convoluted and complex with various theories of this or that mixed in with something about dreams and ravens. This one is more technical, and I felt lost at some points. Sometimes I’d reread a statement or explanation and it would feel like I was on the verge of understanding, but it was just out of reach. The book had a good, steady pace with a lot of action packed at the end. I have so many questions I have no idea how I’m going to wrap my brain around any type of understanding. There’s treachery, death, deceit, and the usual torment of the Emergents to figure out how and why they tick. Honestly, the bulk of the book seemed drawn out, and then suddenly the twist at the end felt rushed. Even as I was reading it, I wasn’t believing it because I thought for sure they were just going to turn around and say it was a dream or simulation. Because of that, some of the excitement of the rescue was diminished. I also feel like the series started out with one plot about a tyrant and is now become some theoretical story about dreams, and the digital divide which has me completely lost. I really liked the series at first and I’m hoping things become clear again in the final book of this set before continuing.
