Slayers Hockey #2

Dirty Hookup

One look and I know… this chick hates me.
I should walk away, find some puck bunny to gleefully sit on my lap and tell me what a big, hot, hockey stud I am--totally true, BTW. But there’s just something about this feisty redhead I can’t let go. She’s got an edge to her that’s sexy as hell and a smart mouth that’s been tying me up since the night I met her.

She tells me to forget it, we’re not happening. But this isn’t the kind of woman a guy ever forgets. Especially when the air starts to sizzle and pop every time we get within ten feet of each other. She’s in my head and under my skin, and all I can think about is the way she looked at me that one time. Like she already knew how it could be between us.

I’m not the kind of guy a girl like her takes home… But maybe I want to be.

Well, that was good. And by good, I mean okay. I'm feeling mean today so I won't make this long because it honestly doesn't deserve it.

And the H and h were likable characters, I loved Quinn, more than George, he was an honest and simple character, but not totally what I expected from book #1. Of course you could see the story coming even before starting the book, but it was still a enjoyable read, to be completely fair, the story itself wasn't bad, but what made the book is that I loved the writing style and the pace, it was not a two weeks romance, which I usually don't enjoy, but I think I wanted more glimpses of that BIG family George had, she was a family girl (from what we could gather from book #1) but apart from a few scenes, we could not see her interacting with her big family, nor Quinn being part of that at all.

As you can see, still on my slump, but I'm making an effort.
Gonna switch genres now because even hockey romances are somehow broken and not working.

Thanks to my hoopla app, I listened & read DH simultaneously. So with that, my favorite thing about DH was actually Christian Fox, the narrator. His voice is so natural & candid.

As for the book itself...
I can’t say DH came close to wowing me, but I liked it & I’m still interested in the series enough to continue. Quinn & George definitely check the boxes for likability & their sexy times. As do the supporting characters.

I think my hang up is their past misunderstanding/mishap. I found myself laughing once or twice when there most certainly wasn’t the intention of humor in the writing because of it. I just don’t buy the resolution of Quinn’s lack of memory from being so drunk & drugged yet George never once questioned his sobriety. Idk maybe I’m being too skeptical. For me, it would’ve been more believable if it had been something along the lines of him grabbing them some breakfast the morning after while she’s sleeping, have an accident involving a head trauma & a result of it would be memory loss of their time together. Then go from there with the fallout in the present. Idk. jmo 🤷‍♀️.

4.5 - "I’m coming for you. And sooner or later, you’re going to like me… Just a little." Stars!

We return to the Slayers Hockey series for book two; Dirty Hookup giving us Quinn O’Brian’s story, and Mira nailed it again for me. This series has hands-down been the best writing I have seen from the author, so far and long may it last.

George Bowen knows Quinn better than Quinn initially realises, although he is also in the dark as to the facts of their original meeting. But for him, it’s a rare occurrence that a woman goes from smiling and happy with their mutual friends to ice cold bitch-from-hell as soon as he enters the room, with the full icy blast firmly directed at him, and the puzzle of why she treats him like it pretty much means ‘Game On’, especially as he can’t get her out of his head (big & little ones).

"I’ve only ever felt like this with you…"

Frenemies have never looked so good with these two, and when George finally caves to his (considerable) charms, all bets are off and it’s full steam ahead for Quinn in wooing the woman he has quickly come to understand is more than just a ‘quick fling’ and not just a sexy interlude.

I devoured this book in a day, and I loved it almost as much as Vaughn and Allie’s story (Dirty Secret) my only niggle and hence the drop of the half a star is purely due to personal preference and the slightly OTT familial drama that played out in the second half. That said, I don’t think Mira could have written the story any differently, and what I give her applause for is the fact, she didn’t drag it out, or let it take over Quinn and George’s story in general.

Another winner, I am loving the Slayers family, and I cannot wait for Rux & Cammy’s book; Dirty Rebound due next in the series.

"'You’re mine, George. We didn’t talk exclusivity, but you are mine. I feel like I’ve been waiting my entire life for you. And maybe it makes me an asshole. Maybe it makes me a caveman. But I’m not sharing. Those other fuckers had their chance. They missed it.'"
This series just keeps getting better and better.

George had this magic night with Quinn seven years ago. She got hurt. She doesn't forgive him for it, but she can't forget about him either.
Quinn doesn't remember her. But when he sees her, something in him changes.
And it's "Happily ever after in action, baby!"

Mira has a knack for telling the story and making you feel like you're living it. So yeah, I was George for a little while and I was in Quinn's shoes for some time as well. And when everything fell into place, I teared up a bit. Some books just do that to you.

So happy I read this one - bring in September 8th for the next one.

Maybe more like 2.5?
I love romance stories that begin with hate (or something like it). So it was kind of surprising that this book just couldn't keep my attention, at least in the beginning. I read the first chapter and I thought... I don't like this girl. And then I abandoned it for like a week, to read another chapter and think: this story isn't interesting or fun enough. Another week, and mostly because I was bored and the 500 ebooks in my kindle don't seem more interesting, I would read another chapter.
So, yesterday, I decided to give it another chance (honestly, like the tenth chance, but whatever). By then, my progress was about 25% and I kind of remembered what I had been reading since april.
That's when it finally hooked me. I must say that I enjoyed it, but I don't think I can give it a higher rating for several reasons. First, at least for me, the characters felt kind of plain. We don't see much of their lives, outside of this relationship and hockey (for example, what about Quinn's parents?). There was a bit of unrealistic stuff happening (and yeah, I know that's how it usually is in romance, but maybe it was a bit too much in this one). I don't think the tittle matches the story (dirty hookup makes more sense if it were a "friends with benefits to real couple" kind of thing). And finally, I just can't ignore that it was a struggle reading the first quarter of the book.

This was cute!! I’m just having a lot of trouble wrapping my head around the resolution they came to about the past? Like, he was drunk/had been drugged but she didn’t notice at all and she was completely sober? And they had sex? Someone who is drunk and on molly is incredibly noticeable. It’s really difficult to miss something so major and I think that was a massive plot hole. I did really like this and these characters were fine but yeah, I can’t seem to move past this whole ‘misunderstanding’ because it just doesn’t make sense to me.

Quinn O'Brian is a playboy who takes advantage of his status as an NHL player. George Bowen hates Quinn's guts and she's not about to let him charm his way into her pants. The Devil works hard, but Quinn O'Brian works harder to make George Bowen like him.

Honestly, I'm having such a blast listening to this series on audio. Dirty Hookup was a short and easy romance that I lost myself into. I surprisingly really enjoyed Quinn as hero. He was unexpectedly adorable. I did not expect him to be so freaking sweet. The man may be adorbs, but he also has a dirty mouth on him 🔥

George was an okay heroine. I understand why she was so pissed at Quinn. But I think she needed to grovel some more at the end because she knowingly kept the truth from Quinn. The conflict is pretty straightforward, but it gets a bit messy in the end.

As always, Christian Fox's voice gave me a heatstroke 🥵 My soul almost left my body when I listened to Christian Fox narrate Quinn's chapters, especially the dirty talk.

I also LOVE the hockey boys so much. Their scenes killed me with laughter 😂 I want to be their friend so I could hang out with them. But seeing as they're fictional, I'll have to settle for every single hockey boy's story 😉 As Quinn himself said: "Happily ever after in action, baby!"

P.S. I also want to eat Quinn's lemon bars 🥺

Book 2 in the Slayers Hockey series and it was a great addition to the series. Loved this so much. Quinn and George were so good. They hooked up about 7 years ago and she never forgot him even though it seems like he did. Loved this second chance romance. They had a push and pull relationship that was so fun to watch. He wanted her but she didn’t want him because she didn’t want to get hurt again. This book will pull you in from page 1 until the very end. Love Ms. Kelly’s work and I can’t wait to read more of this series and of her work.

I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Well... it looks like I've found myself a new author for quick and sexy sports romances! This was light and steamy with a hero who is a lovable former playboy with a heart of gold. While part of a series, it easily stands on its own - I read this one first, and now I'm going to have to go back and read Dirty Secret because this was such an enjoyable read. The only reason this doesn't earn 5 stars from me is because it's so short that there's a distinctly insta-love feel to the romance, which, I'll openly admit worked for the story. This isn't a deep or emotional read; it's fast-paced and steamy with minimal angst.

The story follows Quinn (the hero) and George (the heroine), two people who are part of the same group of friends. Upon meeting, Quinn (a shameless playboy and pro hockey player) is immediately captivated by George, and he begins pursuing her... but she wants no part of it. The two share a history that Quinn seems completely unaware of, and each reminder pushes George farther away. She's torn between the chemistry that sparks between them and the past that proves how wrong they are for each other.

The kind of book that's easy to read in one sitting, this is like a love story at warp speed. It's got all the right elements - executed very well - but wastes no time on getting to the heart of the story. That works very well if you're looking for something quick and sexy, but don't expect the emotional buildup or sexual tension you'd find in a longer book. It hit the spot for me on a day when I was looking for something to get lost in for a few hours, and I'm looking forward to reading about Quinn's teammates in future books (we get a few teases about potential couples, and I was all for it). I really appreciated the author's handling of Quinn's playboy past - there was zero OW drama, plenty of time between partners, and there was no one else on his mind after meeting the heroine. Their backstory also worked for me, but I'm not going to share details about that. I'll definitely check out more from the author without hesitation, and look forward to more from the series. I received an ARC via Give Me Books and am voluntarily leaving a review of this sexy sports romance.

First off let me start by saying that this guy was so better looking that the last one and the one before that in my opinions. Ohh man Quinn, we had met him before in Vaughns book and I am glad that we got to find out more about him, I hate the man ho stuff but it is understandable why these guys are like that I mean you have money supposedly you are hot so of course you have woman throwing themselves at you, do I condone it no but I get it. So anyhow back to story we knew that George didn't like him and he just couldn't remember her and as we read the story we find out why, man his brother was a disgusting person. Anyway so we understood why George hated him but even though she did she couldn't help the attraction she has to him and while she gives him a chance thinking that this will be only sex we knew that that would change and when everything does come out, you were like wow I could understand what both of them were going thru and Quinn broke my heart and I ended up really liking him..Now Mira please give me a story on Cammie and Rux.

Dirty Hookup is the second book in the Slayers Hockey series and follows the story of Quinn and George (short for Georgia). The two hooked up 6 years ago on Winter Break. Man does she give him the cold shoulder at first interaction! She REALLY makes him work for her attention. This was drama filled! Almost too much at times. There was a twist at the end that I didn’t see coming but how the author lead up to that twist I didn’t agree with or like. I enjoyed the connection between Quinn and George once she FINALLY opens up and allows him in. There was a ton of push and pull in this one and I found it hard to connect to the emotional side of these characters. Quinn stood out to me in this book. He is patient and protective of George even though she is hiding something. I love the friendships formed between the hockey players. Even though I didn’t like this one nearly as much as the first I’m invested in these characters and am looking forward to the next one in the series!

I’m such a fan of Mira Lyn Kelly. She writes the best sexy, feel-good romances and she gets better with each book she puts out. I adored Dirty Hookup...Mira has written a wonderful story filled with in-depth characters, hot sexy times and sweet sigh inducing moments.

The book is an fantastic read that I finished in a day. Dirty Hookup is a great addition to the Slayers series. I’m really looking forward to the next book in the series.

tropes: second chance romance, friends with benefits

the moment he sees her, he knows she's the one, but what he doesn't know is that they actually meet 6 years ago.

i realized that i hate when i can guess the 'third act breakup' at the beginning of the book, but i was hoping that I'd be wrong, be no i wasn't!
the hero was super cute, but i was still dozing while listing this book.

** I was given an eARC in exchange for an honest review, all opinions are mine **

At first, I wasn't sure I would like this one, because Quinn was a bit insufferable at first. But I think that added a level to the whole enemies-to-lovers bit him and George had going on (although, I think it was more enemies-to-lovers on George's side, and an insta-crush on Quinn's side, but I digress). The story starts off with a central, burning question that George has about Quinn and the plot twist was unreal, and that's all I'm going to say about that so it's not spoiler-y.
The characters eventually grew on me, and I started to see why exactly Quinn was a bit of a prick at the beginning, which I'm glad that he softened. George was my favorite from the start because she's a woman who's unapologetic in her anger, which we stan in this house.
4/5 stars!

I freakin’ LOVED this SO MUCH!!! I couldn’t love it any more if I tried. This was second chance done right...so, so right. The emotions were strong with this one.

I loved watching Georgie go from angry to vengeful to lustful to in-control to vulnerable. The author made it so easy to side with her, to understand her feelings.

Quinn is sexy AF, he’s a talented hockey player, he’s goes after what he wants...and usually gets it. He’s big-hearted, he’s a caveman, he’s patient, and he’s oh so swoony and romantic.

We watch as the past is revealed, hearts are crushed, betrayals happen, explanations are made, and the truth comes out.

I love love love the writing style of this author. I can easily visualize everything. I can FEEL everything. This story was fun where it needed to be, full of heart at the perfect times, and deliciously steamy when I needed it most. It gave me everything.

This book comes highly recommended by me!

George has no idea why this gorgeous woman seems to despise him - it's not the norm and definitely not what he's used to. But what he doesn't remember is what Quinn wants to wipe from her memory. Being forgettable is not something anyone wants to be reminded of when a gorgeous guy starts pursuing you.

Dang...when George is determined, he is really freakin determined, and the chase was on. I like that Quinn put him off for quite a bit - she's tough and feisty and not about to let him know how he had broken her heart so thoroughly by forgetting her. Boneheaded man! But deep down, these two are made for each other and the way they went about securing their second chance is entertaining, hot reading.

I LOVED DIRTY HOOKUP! This is my first time reading a book by Mira Lyn and she has definitely become one of my favourite authors. From the very first page, everything flowed effortlessly and I couldn’t put it down. Hot hockey player, fiery heroine and a second chance romance, I was hooked line and sinker.

Quinn, be still my beating heart. I loved his consistency, his determination and his confidence. But more than that, I loved his vulnerable side. Add in his dirty talk and he is definitely my newest book boyfriend. I just loved Quinn!!

George is a feisty, edgy and strong-willed heroine and boy does she challenge and keep Quinn on his toes. Her tomboy personality and the fact that she doesn’t just give in

The familiarity and chemistry Quinn and George share was off the charts. The sexual tension between the two was electric, only enhanced by the push and pull of George’s fears, doubts and undeniable attraction. And when she finally gives in, phew,

Highest recommendations for Dirty Hookup and I am so unbelievably excited to read the next instalments in the Slayers Hockey series.

This was my first book from the author. You know me, I can't pass a sports romance with an interesting synopsis. So it was a no brainer for me to sign up for the release!

Quinn and Georgie's story is complicated at best. It took me a while at first to get into it and being able to follow the storyline. When I overcame this issue, I was all in for these two! Quinn might come with a less than stellar reputation but he's a softie at heart! Georgie is tough as nails, she has to after growing up with older brothers. She's hostile towards him from the start because of something that happened years ago. The thing is that he doesn't remember any of it!

The book is really good, not really heavy on the sports part and not filled with unnecessary drama. All in all, "Dirty Hookup" is an enjoyable read with some really sexy moments to keep you company!!!

This is the perfect low spoons series for me - the books are fun, quick, easy reads that I don't have to think too much about. Honestly, perfect for reading slumps and/or fuzzy brain days, which is where I'm at at the moment.

George and Quinn were so cute together, and I LOVE how gone he was for her, truly boy obsessed trope. Big fan of the whole 'player sees girl once and is down BAD, she's it for him' thing. Like boy was truly out here giving it his all. And his little possessive moment with 'the banker'? I don't know what it says about me but that was so cute.

I love a man obsessed who would do anything for her, what can I say. Bonus points when the girl is a little spiky/grumpy, too.

George is a successful and sexy hockey player who has a reputation with the ladies so he is in uncharted territory when the one woman he wants doesn’t want him. She goes out of her way to ignore him but since their best friends are dating fate keeps throwing them together and walking away isn’t an option.

Quinn and George have a past that she would like to forget that he doesn’t remember. With their best friends now a couple she will keep at a distance, but she wasn’t prepared for his powers of persuasion or the way that he was making her feel.

George is feisty and fun while George is the perfect combination of sweet and sexy and there is no denying that they are a perfect team.

Quinn knows his weaknesses, “no. If we’re in here for even five more minutes, I’m going to have you up against that door again,.." Quinn has to compromise with his woman regularly, "...we need to get a few things clear first. We need to talk. And then once we do, you’re welcome to use me as often as you like. And if you want, I’ll even bring you back here for the door thing before I carry you like a caveman back to my bed and start all over again.” I liked this book, I loved Quinn.

2.5 stars rounded up to generous 3

Damn.

I think it's the first read from Mira Lyn Kelly that I didn't really enjoy.

I think my biggest problem was with the heroine, George.

I didn't know why I wasn't a big fan of hers in the previous book and in this one I finally found out.

In a nutshell?

Because she is stupid.
That's why.

But lemme explain.

This story is a second chance.
The hero, Quinn, is a hockey star, good looking, a real player who enjoys sleeping around, and is known for jumping from one puck bunny's bed into another's.
And the story starts when he bumps into George, our dumb heroine.

Turns out, they hooked up 6 or 7 (i don't remember) years before the story picks up. She lost her v-card to him and then there was a whole misunderstanding, miscommunication etc etc and she saw him the next day with some bimbo.

And they meet and she is all hurt and angry. And it turns out he doesn't remember her (we later find out it was because he was drugged that night and he only knew he slept with some redhead).

And when he meets George, he is all smitten with her and starts flirting and all the shebang but she is so hurt that he doesn't remember her that she swears she never wants to have anything to do with him.

And that continues for like 7 chapters and then bang, she starts kissing him and tells him she wants to bang him with no strings for a night.
Ugh.

And of course, they don't stop after one night and they continue their 'no strings' relationship.

And what's better, she told him that the girl he banged 7 years prior was her friend and that was why she was so angry.

And for the life of me I couldn't understand the logic behind her actions.

Because, bitch, why lie?
Why not tell the truth and finally get some answers?
Why not have some self-respect?
Why continue with this charade?

Her entire behaviour didn't strike me as a very smart or mature one.
Au contraire, really.
Everything she did and said was so pathetic I wanted to holler.
Hence the missing stars.

The other books from this series are way better.

All in all, it would've been a much better read if not for the dumb heroine.

But I did love Quinn, he was an actual sweetheart so I'm rounding it up to 3.
But if that doesn't bother you, then why not?

It's still a pretty decent read.
Just the heroine was far from what I wanted.
