This is a Romantic Suspense, and this is the tenth book in the Cowboys of Holiday Ranch series. I have read and reviewed the other books in this series before picking up this book. This book was not my favorite book in the series, and I had trouble really connecting to the characters in this book. I felt the suspense was ok. This book was good, but it was not great. This book does have somethings in it that could upset some readers.

This latest addition to Carla Cassidy's Holiday Ranch series is a bit of a departure from the other novels I've read in this series, and quite a bit darker than most. While it works as a standalone, to understand references to "Cassie's lost boys", I'd suggest reading the novels in this series from the beginning. Nevertheless, it was a good read, dealing with difficult subject matter, i.e. physical violence and rape, and if those issues are triggers for you, I'd suggest you pass this one by. While the subject matter is certainly distasteful, Ms. Cassidy wove a really sweet and sensual romance around these issues and it gets 4 stars from this reader.
The first character we meet in this novel is Flint McCay, one of Cassie's lost boys, a cowboy through and through, and one who earned great success as a professional rodeo bull rider. As is so common among bull riders, during his rodeo career he broke nearly every bone in his body, and now, at age 34, he's back at the ranch and in constant, debilitating pain. Cassie's been giving him some of the lighter chores on the ranch, like mucking out stalls, and keeping the barns and stables clean, and it's while he's cleaning out the stifling hot barn that was their winter hay storage facility, he finds a terrified woman hiding there, and recognizes her as Maddy (Madison) Taylor, a clerk at the local grocery store, one whom he hasn't seen there in some time. She tells him a story about her car breaking down as she was leaving town late the previous night, and since she didn't have a cell phone, she decided to hole up in the nearest place she could find shelter, which was this barn on the Holiday Ranch. Flint is quick to realize that she's lying through her teeth, but she needs a place to stay until she can get her car towed and repaired, and Flint, who has built himself a retirement cabin deep in the woods, offers to let her stay there, since he's still living in the bunkhouse.
Flint knows that Maddy is on the run from something, and she doesn't place her trust in Flint or give up her secrets easily, but Flint is a good guy, a gentleman, and slowly but surely he gets the full story about why Maddy was running away, why she repeatedly throws up early every evening, and when she eventually admits that she's been severely beaten and raped, she still won't name her attacker, but Flint goes out of his way to protect her, encouraging her to get the therapy she so obviously needs after such trauma, but Maddy doesn't want her attacker to know that she's still in town. She also doesn't want Flint to be responsible for her safety and her expenses, and so he offers her a job as his housekeeper and cook, something he really doesn't need, but as an excuse to keep her safe.
As these two characters begin to open up to one another and develop feelings for one another, feelings that eventually lead them to Flint's bed, the ease with which Maddy eagerly gave herself to Flint stretched my willing suspension of disbelief to the breaking point. I've known victims of rape and violence, and I simply couldn't accept that Maddy would readily hop into bed and have sex with anyone until she'd dealt with the trauma she'd experienced at the hand of her violent rapist.
Flint finally manages to get Maddy to name her attacker and file a complaint against him with the police, but it's now more than 3 months since she was attacked, and there's no physical evidence to support her claims of being beaten and raped, except for the fact that Maddy is pregnant with her rapist's baby, a fact she's not shared with anyone but Flint, and it's at this point that the suspense in this novel ratchets up, because once the investigation begins, her rapist knows that the only thing he can do to protect his reputation and social position is to kill her.
This is a well-written novel of romantic suspense, with memorable characters, and since I don't do spoilers, I'll end this review by stating that despite the aforementioned issue I had with this novel, it nevertheless was still a good read, and I'm happy to recommend it.

Flint McCay works as a cowboy at the Holiday Ranch but he has a problem. His back is hurting and joints are awful and the doctor has given him medication to help the problem but he is low to accept this help. Then he finds a young woman in his barn and he learns how to accept his difficulties while also learning how to help and protect another.
I thought this was a sweet story. The whole situation surrounding it was awful, though. Supposed good upstanding citizen reveals his dark side and preys on unsuspecting woman who no one would believe if they ever came forward to finger him for raping them. Maddy has more proof than most. This horrible, awful man made her pregnant.
I think it takes a pretty special person to overcome this particular obstacle. It wouldn’t be easy to be continually reminded about a horror in your past. Great story. I love how all the cowboys at Holiday Ranch stood together to help Maddy and I appreciated a police chief would would believe a victim and help her bring that person to justice.
If you love a good romantic suspense, definitely check this one out. You won’t be disappointed.

Madison is clearly running away from something and Flint is on a mission to find out when he finds the women hiding in his barn. Until they can figure something out and ensure her safely he will do everything he can to keep her hidden and protected by yours truly problem is can he keep his heart out if it.
I loved seeing how supportive Flint was, I mean the dude barely knew Maddie and he taken her in helping her out when he didn't have to. I loved seeing that attraction between the two. It was interesting seeing how when everything went out in the open, people can either root for her for telling the truth or support the other party. There was so many ways this book could've gone and I loved how it turned out. Kept me hooked from start to end and I enjoyed it.

It’s clear that she’s been hurt—and that she’s terrified of opening up to any man. As the cowboy slowly bonds with Maddy, he learns that a powerful man will stop at nothing to destroy her—but Flint will do anything to save her.
I am sensitive to difficult subject matters that were referenced in this book and don’t like reading books that they’re in. I wish there had been a warning. DFN!

Nice romance. Fast read. Now I want the rest of the series. I'm hoping to find out the sex of the baby at some point! LOL
Flint is definitely a cowboy. He's got all that cowboy good feels going on. The sexiness and the caring. Maddy needs help, and she sure gets it!

Deserves negative stars. An infinite number of marmosets licking an infinite surfeit of generic Cheez Whiz off an infinite number of 1990s label makers with the letter e on the fritz could have written better than this affront to rape survivors, the ppl who love them, and the great state of Oklahoma. It truly puts the ‘Bah!’ In ‘bathroom tissue,’ it‘s only logical use.

While I did enjoy this book, I feel like there was something missing. There were so many heavy issues brought up in the story line, but they were not really addressed. I always like to revisit the cowboys at Holiday Ranch, but this book was not as developed as the previous ones. I really liked Flint and Maddy, but did not know that much more about them at the end of the book as I did at the beginning.
A few of the issues - Flint has an auto-immune disease that he just does not want to think about, so he doesn't. He goes through the whole book terrified how it is affecting his life, but doesn't talk to his doctor, pharmacist, any of his friends. He then feels he can tell Maddy what to do about her trauma, while not even addressing his. Maddy, we find out has been raped, never did anything about it, and 3 months later decides to leave town in a car that breaks down. A total mess then ensues.
There were way too many issues happening with no clear resolutions offered. The relationship would have been better if some of the extra "stuff" had not been put into play.

Another in the Cowboys of Holiday Ranch series, in which Flint McCoy discovers Madison Taylor hiding in the barn at Holiday Ranch. It is clear she's terrified someone will find her, so he takes her to the cabin he recently completed and plans to live in after quitting his job at the ranch. After some doing, he convinces her to tell him what happened and she reveals that a man in town whom everyone looks to up has raped her and now she's pregnant.
Through the story, Flint stands by her, even convincing her to report the crime to the sheriff, but the likelihood the rapist will be caught is low. Who will believe Maddy and not Brad? How Madison arranges to get him to confess is scary, but what is most unbelievable about the tale is how quickly she decides to make love to Flint so soon after she's been raped. Can't believe that would happen in real life.

I really loved this story. Madison is a very strong character and faces some very traumatic challenges. Flint is a kind and loveable hero. I'm loving these Cowboys of Holiday Ranch. Definitely quite an emotional read. The ending really made me smile.
