Rate this book
A noble. An assassin. A girl with a past...

Christiana isn’t your average Marchioness. Living a double life, she is known in the dark shadows as Midnight Maiden, the vigilante assassin. Using skills she’s honed for years, she helps the abused to regain control of their lives. But when the Royal Family summons her to the palace for a summer filled with gossip and eligible bachelors, she must conceal her illicit alter-ego while rebuilding relationships lost. But she is forced to decide between her safety and her integrity when Prince Alekzander, the next King, attempts to hire her to take out a powerful man at court: Chancellor Julian Marlow. With her head, and her heart, on the line, Christiana must decide what type of future she is truly meant to lead.

"The Selection's political intrigue and heart-pounding romance meets Throne of Glass's cutthroat justice in this breakout indie debut by Kathryn Marie. Like Christiana, you'll find this read is a summer whirlwind you'll never forget!" R. Dugan, Author of The Chaos Circus and the Starchaser Saga

I had the privilege of reading an early copy of MIDNIGHT MAIDEN, and wow. Just...wow! A deep, intriguing, beautiful book that deals in subterfuge, stealth, romance and danger. Midnight Maiden explores deep topics about strength and safety, abuse and healing, trust and love,, and the lengths one may go to to save themselves and those they love.

I was immediately gripped by the lush world, intense character tension, and the dynamics between them. Christiana's past and present collide in a desperate dance as she struggles to keep her secrets safe and protect the people who need her most. I couldn't wait to see how things turned out!

Loveable heroes. Swoonworthy love interests. Despicable villains, and friends worth fighting for. You'll find this and more between the pages of Midnight Maiden! The Selection's political intrigue and heart-pounding romance meets Throne of Glass's cutthroat justice in this breakout novel. Like Christiana, you'll find this read is a summer whirlwind you'll never forget!

As soon as I read the first chapter and found that the MC was a badass female assassin that went around killing abusive men... I mean... I was sold.

But then I kept reading, and found that the MC also had a "softer" side, one that reminded me a lot of the MC from One Iridescent Night: A Cinderella Retelling. If you read my review from that book, you'll see that Evelyn's more vulnerable side being shown was what made the book so great for me. Quoting myself: "This book gives you all the raw and painful bits, and it's everything." I felt similarly when reading Midnight Maiden. Yes, the MC is physically strong and could easily kick my butt, but she's also dealing with a lot of trauma and grieving for her past.

As I said before, I think we need more vulnerable MCs, so thank you Kathryn for giving us another one!

I loved the gentleness of the human relationships, the care that was put into all of them and how wholesome and pure they were. Mistakes where made, toxic traits were shown, but in the end, they learned from it, they grew, they became better.

The way the MC dealt with her trauma was also great, done very well and with a lot of care.

All that being said, the story was a little on the slow side for my liking (if you know me by now, you know I'm all about fast paced stories because I'm a pretty fast reader and that's how I get the motivation to keep on reading). But... that's probably my only critique. Well, that and the fact that I ended up hating one of my favorite characters by the end of the story, haha. But hey, that's super personal! haha. The writing style was great, simple yet elegant; the characters were all interesting; and the world was simple, yet effective and interesting :)

Also, this is a duology and I'm writing this review before reading the second book. The ending was opened enough to want to know more, but it wasn't a huge cliffhanger that leaves you all anxious and stressed, haha. So that's another plus!

Well this one certainly keeps you on your toes...not knowing how Christiana is going to go through with her latest job. She's sort of a female Robin Hood, Assassin...helping those who are suffering at the hands of abusers. Be warned this book could have some triggers for anyone who has been through forms of abuse in their lives.

But what I loved about this book, not only was the lead an Assassin, bad ass, boss female, she also had a sensetive side. She pushed people away, struggles with inner demons and shadows of her past. She is still on a healing journey, and those scares run deep, physically and mentally. Christiana, was such a relatable character.

The romance in this book, two I normally so not like - friends to lovers and a love triangle. However, I loved it. I think Kathryn Marie found a way to balance it out without it being unrelatable, uncomfortable or unrealistic. I loved both Rowan and Zander and I would have been happy with either of them. Which never ever happens, I'm always swayed heavily one way or another.

I am excited to see where book 2 will go. There seems to be a lot of hidden secrets and revenge on the cards, that I am intrigued to see play out.

Love court intrigue, assassins, badass female lead, romance, love Triangles, royal politics, this one is for you!!

Another author to add to my favorites list!

This very enjoyable book has suspense, action, romance, friendship and revenge. It also deals with struggling with inner demons, anxiety, abuse, and learning to trust again. I could not get enough of Ana, a Marchioness whos secretly an assassin called the Midnight Maiden helping others who are abused. I loved how strong she was even though she was still healing from her past.

Will I be reading the next book? ABSOLUTELY!

Welcome to the land of Viri, where things aren't always as they seem. The successful, young Marchioness of Tagri, Christiana, isn't just beauty and brains - she moonlights as a vigilante assassin, helping the victims of abuse be free of their demons. The Midnight Maiden only helps those in need, and when a new client requests her help inside the castle, Christiana must balance her double life and her growing affections for the client - the crown prince of Viri.

As Christiana's summer at the castle progresses, she finds herself pulled in many different directions, both romantically and professionally. Readers will see a strong but introverted young woman grow to trust those around her, something that she didn't experience growing up in a strict household. She embraces her clandestine profession and the "necessary evil" that it is, because it ensures the safety of others. Christiana is passionate and determined to help those in need, but she struggles with expressing her emotions. That is, until her excellent friends at the palace, Alekzander, Dorina, and Rowan, make her feel safe and loved. Christiana breathes new life into the strong female lead with her morally grey compass, giving her dimension not seen in most young adult and new adult fantasy novels.

The delightful web that Kathryn Marie has woven includes court intrigue, passion, and heart-pounding action as Christiana navigates her first summer at court as the Maiden and Marchioness. The rich, diverse characters and the lush world-building, along with killer dialogue make this book a must-read for any fans of historical fiction and fantasy.

Fans of Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder and Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas will love Kathryn Marie's debut novel in the Midnight duology, promising to leave readers begging for more.

First of all, I’d like to start by saying how proud of you I am, Katie. I had the chance to be one of the beta readers for Midnight Maiden, when this book was still growing into its full potential, and I have to say that I am impressed by everything you’ve accomplished and all the hard work you’ve put in to make this book the best version of itself.
You powered through the tough days and reveled in the good ones, and now it’s time to let your story come to life.

Midnight Maiden is the first book in the Midnight Duology and it is a jewel of action-packed historical fiction, heartwarming romance, and political intrigue.

Our leading lady— Christiana— makes her way through an unforgettable summer at the royal palace where she has to deal with potential suitors, a childhood tainted by dark memories, and an old flame rekindled by the truth, all the while keeping her alter ego’s identity— the Midnight Maiden— a secret.

Midnight Maiden will swoop you into the dreamy atmosphere of a royal summer full of twists and turns. It’ll make you fall in love with the characters.
It’ll make you angry.
It’ll made you sad.
It’ll make you happy.
It’ll make you want to reach out into the pages and slap some sense into some people.
But it’ll all be worth it in the end.

I was sent an early copy of Midnight Maiden and I was so excited to get to read it. The comp titles are perfect...it definitely gives off selection and throne of glass vibes. The romance is fantastic without completely overwhelming the plot. I loved Christiana for being a strong character and fighting through her trauma, and for the smart way she went about her tasks. I throughly enjoyed it and am excited to read the next one when it comes out next year to see where their adventure takes them next.

Disclaimer: I first Beta Read a different draft, then read the final draft for this review.

This is a slow-paced romance with assassination sprinkled throughout. I personally would have liked it to focuse on the assassin aspects more, but it was an interesting read. Though Christiana's assassin position seemed more like a backstory and subplot to her discovering romantic love, the author handled abuse and mental health issues with grace.

Marie has a tendency to linger on small moments, which some people like, but I prefer a faster pace.

Wow, did I enjoy this book! Christiana is such an awesome chick! I mean a proper, wealthy Marchioness, with an interesting secret, along with romance, suspense, and action? Yes, please!

Trigger warning: assault and abuse.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Christiana’s story. She has a rather dark, and sad past that is amazing she turned out as well as she did. Instead of becoming something like her father, she instead took that knowledge of her past to do something to help others who suffer the same way she did. Thus, her assassination skills.

Although this is a secret known to literally no one, except for about two people. And for obvious reasons, no one knows about her secret amongst the royals and her family. So, when she’s commissioned by none other than her childhood friend and her Prince, Alekzander, to assassinate someone in the court who is abusing someone, it’s understandable for her to basically worry whether she should take the job. At the same time, she’s invited to court for the summer by the king and queen, so it’s a perfect opportunity for the Midnight Maiden to meet with the prince and figure out details for the assassination, and see if this is something she can take on from the prince.

I have to say that I fell in love with Zander from the moment he entered the stage. There is just something about him from the beginning that I just loved. He’s literally a sweet cinnamon roll who views Christiana as an equal rather than beneath him. I loved the romance, although there was definitely a love triangle, and I’m not a fan of those. Christiana drove me nuts with it too because she seemed to be unable to make up her mind when it was pretty obvious who her choice was from the beginning, and stringing along both men, not my favorite.

I really enjoyed this story. If not for the love triangle, this would have been a five star read for me. It was a lot of fun to read and I look forward to the next book!

Great book, just not my favorite tropes/endings. An easy read with intriguing characters, but I unfortunately wasn't invested in the love triangle, and everything was wrapped up a little too neatly at the end. Considering this is the first of two books, I expected there to be more questions at the end, and in truth I only had one.

That being said, I enjoyed it, and will absolutely read the next one!

To the world at large, Christiana is the Marchioness of Tagri; a strong, smart and capable noblewoman. But in the dark shadows, where no-one knows who she is, she is the Midnight Maiden; a dangerous assassin who helps the abused regain control of their lives. She has kept these two sides of her identity in perfect balance for a long time but, when the Royal Family calls the Marchioness to the castle for the summer at the same time as a call for the Maiden's help comes from within the castle walls, this balance is challenged. Mix into this already difficult situation the mounting pressure to marry, the identity of the one who summoned the Maiden to the castle, and Christiana's own head and heart trying to make sense of her past, present and future all at once, and you get a summer far more difficult than anyone ever expected summer at the palace to be.

In short, I loved this book! I say that about a lot of the books I read, I know, but I truly, genuinely love this book! The characters, the romance, the plot... I loved it all! If you'd rather not read an essay, I'll sum up my thoughts; if you love clear motivations in characters, political/court intrigue, and anything in the same realm of fantasy as Throne of Glass, please read this book!! I am begging you! You won't regret it, I promise.

Historical fantasy with assassins, royal balls, and romance up your alley? You'll love this book. Fans of Robin LaFevers' His Fair Assassins trilogy will find this a lighter, quicker to read duology with many of the same elements. Kathryn Marie has created a strong, determined, deadly heroine in Christiana, a Marchioness leading a double life as an assassin with a strict mission. Between trying to take on her most dangerous mission yet, an abuser with ties to the highest levels of court, and navigating the "marriage mart" during the summer season at the Royal court, Christiana must rely on friends and trusted allies to survive. Her sheer will and moral compass are what makes the most admirable heroines. Her skill with both poisons and blades is ferocious. Her poise and grace, which are admired by so many, hide a girl not quite sure how to handle the budding feelings she's fighting for someone who may be too much to take on romantically, and it was the perfect balance to the strengths that she otherwise possesses.

The blend of action, secrets and romance made this book impossible to put down. I couldn't wait to see how Christiana would navigate her way to success in her most difficult mission yet. The consequences of failure left me on the edge of my seat and until the very end I wasn't quite sure how things were going to play out. I cannot wait to see where her journey takes us in the next book!

A beautifully written book! Couldn't put it down for hours at a time kind of book!
The characters were personally my favorite. Each and every one felt so real and three dimensional. Many I loved, a handful I loved to hate.
The author did an amazing job at keeping the reader guessing, teasing them with just some information to guess, but not enough to know, and I loved that! The style and the flow was amazing!
It touched a lot of deep issues, but I think they were all handled well!

A book about a woman rising from the ashes with an added twist of romance and friendship. Midnight Maiden was one of my highly anticipated read since a long time. Wow! This book stood up to all its promises. The author delivered a story which will stay with me forever. The characters especially Christiana, her dialogues, her choices, her traits, I have a special for those in my heart.

This was the most perfect book to read in the month of October as it had all the action, a fantasy setup, an historical timeline with a romantic aspect which was not very overpowering. A big shoutout to the friends in this book, they kept me smiling all throughout. Dorina! You are the friend we all need. The story was well planned, the court politics, anxiety alongwith the fantastic character arc of Christiana is the highlight of this book. Her journey from an introverted person of the court to the Midnight Maiden was a journey so very exciting. I look forward to reading more work by the author.

!!This book contains heavy themes of both psychological and physical/sexual abuse as well as mental health issues!! I don't remember if the author put any trigger warnings in the book or not (and I don't have my kindle with me at the moment so I can't check) so just be aware of that.

(THIS REVIEW IS SPOILER-FREE) I was lucky enough to be sent an ARC of Kathryn Marie's debut novel 'Midnight Maiden', and let me just tell you what a great debut book this was! Kathryn was excellent at writing scenes and emotion as well as a truly disgusting antagonist.

The love triangle was well written and I liked how the love interests didn't follow the typical stereotype of "best friend vs. bad boy". However, I did find the outcome to be predictive, and the whole triangle-situation felt a bit unnecessary. This is, of course, just a personal opinion, and I know a lot of other people who've read this book adored the love triangle! I just wasn't one of them.

Something I did adore, though, was the plot of this story. It was exciting, perfectly paced with high stakes. The whole premise is very interesting and Kathryn truly delivered in the actual book. Information is only revealed when it has to be, and the plot twist/reveal towards the end was really good! It was one of those where you either figured it out along the way and feel super smart for doing so, or didn't figure it out but realize all of the perfect foreshadowing that was done when you think back to it.

The ending tied everything up extremely well and left you satisfied, but kept enough loose ends for you to be excited about the next book.

Overall, I think 'Midnight Maiden' was great, and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who isn't triggered by the themes in this book!

I read this book over a month ago and I still cannot get over how absolutely amazing this book was! In the review on the back of my book Midnight Maiden was described as, "The Selection's political intrigue and heart-pounding romance meets Throne of Glass's cutthroat justice" and I couldn't agree more! I loved both of those famous series and I loved this book (and its sequel) just as much if not more! There really are not enough words to describe how much I adore this series. The writing style was just perfect and a fantastic fit for the suspenseful, romantic, daring, story that Kathryn Marie spins wonderfully. Christiana was a stunning character that was strong in a way women aren't often portrayed in many novels, she was a fighter but knew when to lean on others for support. I also really appreciated the dedication Marie had to showing that abuse affects people long after it ends which is also not a very common narrative in novels (not to say that it doesn't exist). I don't want to go into too much detail and risk spoiling the book but I would just like to say that Midnight Maiden is in my Top 3 Favorite Books of All Time. Thank you Katheryn Marie for writing such a compelling narrative and I can't wait to see what you have in store for your readers next! Lots of love!!

I was so excited to receive and early copy of Midnight Maiden! Kathryn Marie does an epic job of creating fleshed out and dynamic characters that tell a different kind of story. Ana is absolutely a unique kind of protagonist that breaks the stereotypical boundaries of being a “damsel in distress.” Her strong nature, drive to protect people from the horrors in the world, and her unbound loyalty makes for a refreshing voice in this awesome story. I could go on about the cinnamon roll characters (hi Rowan) and the amazing royals (give me ALL the Zander and Dorian content), but if I kept talking about all of it, we’d be here for days. You’re going to have to do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of Midnight Maiden!

One of the hottest indie releases of the year! As someone who's going through a big Throne of Glass obsession right now, I loved this book. Incredibly written. Christiana kept me on my toes as she navigated her double life as an assassin and a noble searching for love. Romantic, thought-provoking, funny, heart wrenching, satisfying, exciting... Okay, you get it. This novel was a perfect balance of it all. I'm counting down the days until the second book, Midnight Revenge, is released!

I liked the assassin protagonist a lot. Women with swords (and knives and poison), what can I say? And past trauma to complicate matters. And an assassination scheme framing the whole story. On the other hand, I feel like I didn't get to know her two love interests very well, especially Rowan, so it was a bit hard to invest in the love triangle. Overall, though, a pretty good book.

This was such an awesome read.

I'm a big fan of political intrigue, so I was invested in the premise of Midnight Maiden from the get-go. This book definitely contains some heavy topics, such as physical/sexual assault, but it was tackled well by Kathryn.

Christiana's character was incredibly well thought out, and she definitely didn't recover from her past unscathed. I'm glad she has a support network around her, especially friends like Dorina and Robert. I'm also usually doubtful of "noble woman is secretly a badass", but this was explained so well and actually made sense in the context of the story and Christiana's own experiences.

I'm not typically a fan of love triangles, but I found this one realistic and well-written, and I'm interested to see if Christiana's choice will impact things in the sequel (I'm already getting the feeling that Edgar is going to be up to no good).

Overall this book was a treasure to read and I'm eagerly anticipating the sequel!

I had SO much fun reading this book! I loved getting to know Christiana and going on this journey with her. This book is chock full of strong female characters who have a very believable texture. I felt Christiana’s struggle, stuck with her despite her flaws, and never stopped rooting for her. This story is an excellent examination of gender stereotypes widely accepted in this constructed society, mirroring ideologies expressed in our world. I cannot recommend this enough for anyone looking for a strong female lead who is able to take matters into her own hands.

This book was so good! I couldn’t put it down! You have a relatable badass woman MC with anxiety issues and a haunted past, a love triangle between three childhood friends, an amazing Princess best friend, and courtly drama. This book is kind of a cross between The Selection and Throne of Glass! Christiana is trying to find a husband while also trying to figure out how to assassinate a terrible man. She brings justice for the abused, while at the same time trying to pick out her outfit for a masquerade ball. Recommend to anyone who loves strong female MCs, royalty, action, and romance!

Finally had the chance to read this book, and I was not disappointed!! The comp titles gave me an idea of what I was getting into (the selection meets throne of glass? I’m sold) but even then, it defied my expectations.
The world is so rich and steeped in political intruige, it pulls you in from the first page and refuses to let go. But the characters are the real selling point. Christiana’s journey through pain and secrecy to healing herself was so powerful. And the romance was swoon worthy. I laughed and cried and wanted to read on. The only disappointment I had with the book is that it ended.

Christiana is an assassin. She is also a Marchioness and one of the most powerful single women in the land. The two jobs can clash with one another quite a bit, but she would never give up on her opportunity to save the people of her kingdom from the abuse that she had once suffered.

So a warning, there are some depictions of abuse throughout the story. But I think that they built up Christiana's story pretty well, you were very aware of her motivations and the things that made her such a unique character. She had a bit of a love triangle moment, a little annoying because it was a little predictable, but also kind of a good representation of the dichotomies of her two lives. Call me crazy, but I kind of like it when characters have trauma especially when they're so good at rising above it. Christiana is definitely traumatized and I think the author did a great job representing that in a fantasy world.

Some of the writing was a little difficult to get through, the dialogue was a little too direct. The decisions felt a bit obvious and it was hard to really feel the build-up through technique rather than just through the dialogue or monologue. I still liked the premise and plot if it all, I just think it fell a little flatter than I was expecting. It was an interesting read though and I'm excited to see where the story is going to go in the next book.

WOW! Let’s get the details out of the way. It’s a quick read. Slow paced at first but then it’s fast paced. Detailed right down to the t. And thank life it it’s because I could not wait to read the next page…and the next…and the next. And next thing you know I was done with it and upset because I know have to wait for the second book. That’s how good it was.

The way Kathryn wrote this novel was so meticulous, that even when they were writing in parchment, I could hear the quill grinding on it and hear the fire cracking in the back. I was submerged into a world of royals and blood. And if that doesn’t tickle your pickle then I don’t know what will.

I fell in love with Christiana right on the spot. I was reading a very early draft and I was in pure suffering because it was being sent to me by chapters. AND WEEKLY! I found myself looking at my phone several times during the day to see if I had gotten the email with the new chapters because, lets face it, I was obsessed. Just like the blurb says, Christiana isn’t your everyday Marchioness. And while she’s a fierce gal, I have to admit that at times while she was being her alter ego I was a bit shook with how cold she got. Its like they were two VERY different people. And I loved that a lot. We see her suffer, we see her love, we see her transition from innocent noble to cold blooded assassin. And its not a pretty transition as we see the mental struggle and toll this has on her. One thing I loved about this story is that the way our characters and heroine are written, is so human. That is beautiful.

I wont get too into the book because I’ll get excited and I might spoil something and that’s a big NO NO in my book.

I have to admit and be honest when I asked if I could be part of the beta readers, I was a bit doubtful. And I was delighted to be proven wrong. It was so refreshing to read such an exquisite novel. It was a breath of fresh air to read Midnight Maiden. At some point during the read I noticed that it was all playing out in my head like a movie. I saw Christiana at the lunch with the Queen, I saw her running in the gardens and I was smelling the flowers. I felt the cooling breeze in her secret spot, and I was even feeling a little flushed myself with some scenes. I cried, I laughed, I got angry. And any book that can evoke those emotions is a great book. Granted, I may have identified myself with Christiana a little too much. Even in the early draft. I was glad to be working with her (mainly just bombing her with love and reactions and anticipation. Kathryn as been amazing this whole time. Shes been very receptive to our feedback as readers and I noticed a few changes. There might have been more but the story was so good that I may have read past them. There’s so much more I want to say but spoilers 😦 all I can say is, you dont want to miss this one.

Be on the lookout as Kathryn Marie will be a best seller in no time.
