First of all, let's just appreciate the utter art that is this cover. I think I was drooling the first time I got a look at it.
This book was such a fresh breath of air for romance, it was filled to the brim with intelligent characters (including high ranking, fabulous women) and the plot was wrapped around a biotech terrorist attack that had me on my toes the entire time.
This followed Walter River, an army medic who is called into El Paso, Texas, where there was an unknown outbreak of a man-made pathogen, which was killing and infecting people rapidly. River is put in charge of protecting microbiologist, Ava Lloyd (and all round kickass)as she is tasked with finding the site of the outbreak.
Together they end up being ~*almost*~ blown up five times, held at gun point, shot at and kidnapped.
The two main characters had my heart within the first couple of chapters, their witty banter and strength made me oddly protective of the two. Together they continuously had me in stitches, their banter was hilarious but the way they interacted together was even better. This was a romance between two people who had an immense amount of respect for each other, River only ever supported Ava in her position of authority and never undermined her.
Unfortunately, the big mystery of who was behind the terrorist attack was never really a mystery to me. I picked out the mastermind before I even knew there was supposed to be a mastermind, just by how the character was set up to be over eager and a little shifty.
The description of everything was clear and beautiful, every little thing was painted perfectly in my head but I wasn’t overloaded with inane details that made the story drag. There was a lot of technical jargon, that honestly sometimes left me needing to kindle ‘definition’ the hell out of it, but most of the time it was explained in such a way that I could pick up the basic drift of what the words meant without needing an encyclopedia.
There were a few hilarious moments like when River just happened to have a condom on him, even though they were in the middle of fighting a terrorist who had set off a deadly pathogen with the death toll at roughly six-hundred? All I could hear when I was reading this part was River’s favourite saying—
He was definitely prepared.
Honestly though my favourite character might have to be Drill Sargent “DS”, despite the fact he was only in the story for a short portion. He was bloody hilarious omg
The ending was absolutely adorable, and like usual, I wish I was able to read more about their lives after everything was resolved. I'm already sure this series will be an absolute favourite of mine, I can't wait until the next book is out! (literally crying bc this isn't even published yet omg the wait might kill me lmao)

“Yeah,” River said, his grin only getting bigger.“But I’m special, remember?”
Ava is more of the serious academic type. Her rational and level headedness was a nice balance to River's sometimes wild card attitude. I loved her character, she was compassionate, intelligent and brave. But she also came with a dash of sass.
Just because a girl has an ugly cry doesn’t mean she isn’t busy plotting to kill you.
I think what I liked most about this story was the way the words and phrases were used to set the scene. There was a lot going on but you never felt rushed or confused. I mean, I love me some Criminal Minds and World War Z and Viable Threat could be their freakin love child (minus the zombies, of course) but it was that good!
The love story happens over a span of 24-48 hours. The Heat level was hot! The attraction was instant on both sides and the emotional connection a live wire. With only three scenes, River and Ava prove less can be more if done right. And just saying... River definitely knows the how to capitalize!
In all honesty I was so engrossed in the story that the hours felt like minutes. The pacing flowed quickly but the gripping suspense and the undertone of impending danger kept me glued to my kindle. The events and situations River and Ava experienced gave their story a unique twist. It wasn't a hardship to believe in their HEA.
This was a thrill ride of a read and so addictive! Every minute was packed with action, suspense, humor and the unwavering courage born in the wake of some seriously crazy life and death scenarios. I absolutely loved this author's writing style and the characters she bought to life. Special shout out to the DS. Aside from River and Ava, he was my top favorite character! But I'm hoping Dozer and Smoke get their own story in the near future too. I can't wait to see whats next for this author and this series!

Viable Threat is OK. I was expectingnso much more. But I guess, I have tonsettle with OK.
The premisis certainly interesting, considering we live in pandemic era. Miss Rowe done her research of biochemical weapon. I want more on the romance. Onstead I got quick and non graphic romance.
Overall, it is still OK read.

This is an entertaining, well-written, fast paced, steamy, romantic suspense novel. It is action packed with a strong and capable female protagonist, a hot military hero, twists and turns, intrigue, mystery, and a happily ever after ending. I listened to the audio version of this book, and the narrator, Mr. Jeffrey Kafer, has a captivating voice and does an excellent job depicting the characters and their personalities. I am looking forward to reading the next entry in Ms. Rowe's outstanding series with great anticipation.

My MO is to not really comment on the covers but this one? Well look at it. Isn’t scrumptious and utterly lickable?
My first impression is there is a lot of suspense not so much romance. The romantic aspect of the MC went under in all the action packed, face paced plot in the book. Nevertheless I still liked the book.
A deadly virus has been released in El Paso, Texas. The number of deaths are quickly adding up and the number of infected even more so. River our Hero is called to protect Dr. Ava Lloyd so that she can do her job.
River is a strong Hero and a keep cool kind of guy. He is up to the task of protecting his mouse.
Ava Lloyd works for the CDC and is to collect samples at locations where the virus first turned up. Mr. Smooth goes to help her and there is instant attraction.
I guess under extreme circumstances of having four near death experiences with explosives catching the virus and having an overall pretty shitty day can lead you to fall in love with one another quite quickly.
It is clear that the author knows what she is writing about what with a detailed description of viruses, pathogens etc. I was overwhelmed by the information at times. The author touches on topics of domestic terrorism camouflaged as international terrorism her ability to depict a realistic real case scenario are kind of scary.
What irritated me the most? I guessed the brain behind the master plan of destruction pretty early on in the book.
My recommendation is that if you are looking for something different and it being light on romance then this is a book for you.

Ava has seen her share of outbreaks but this one doesn’t respond to any antibodies and those who’re responsible are a mystery. It’s chemically altered and as the bodies pile up, every agency from the CDC to Homeland Security is on the case. Is it a terrorist attack or something deadlier? Working with River sets her body aflame but she promised herself she’d never trust her heart to a soldier again. Can he be trusted or is it just a fling?
I’m a huge fan of Julie Rowe and this is her best book yet! The stakes couldn’t be higher and the attraction between River and Ava set my tablet aflame. You wouldn’t think that being blown up a few times while wearing hazmat suits would be sexy but you’d be wrong. The action scenes were intense and there were times when I was afraid Ava or River might die. There’s plenty of romance, although since many lives are at stake, Ava and River take it whenever and wherever they can. I connected with both Ava and River immediately and almost cried when it ended. I wanted more!
Ripped from the headlines, Viable Threat is an adrenaline-rushing romantic suspense and a must read! The ending left it open for a sequel so I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
Favorite Character/Quote: Ava. I loved how brilliant she is (hello microbiologist) while being tough as nails and yet, there’s a vulnerability when it comes to the opposite sex and love. She’s all business when she first meets River and bristles at his nickname for her. But the more they work together, her walls come down and we catch a glimpse of the real woman underneath.

Sheesh! This book was just go, go, go, go. A jam packed story line that spanned just little over a day where a lethal bio-engineered microorganism is unleashed. Dr Ava Lloyd from the CDC and Special Forces soldier Sergeant River are tasked with finding out the source and who is responsible.
I did feel that the romance between the two main characters took a backseat to the hunt for the terrorists. Lots of drama and explosions. Wasn't the greatest read or memorable - just okay for me.

Such a great read. Kept me on the edge of my seat all the way till the end. My first Julie Rowe book and it won't be my last. She proved she belongs on my favorite authors list.

I think Julie Rowe has written a winner with this one. ‘Viable Threat’ is thrilling, heart-pounding, a fast-paced ride that whisks you through the tense situation of a sudden outbreak and a series of attacks in the city that point to biological terrorism. And in the maelstrom, a Special Forces soldier and a microbiologist join forces to help contain it and get to ground zero, but the journey ahead is fraught with nothing but danger and minefields.
There’s also a lot of arguing over territory, conflicting agendas and hidden motives as the ugly politics of emergency management come to the fore…while bodies drop like flies during a plague. As dry as this bit of the conflict can be, Rowe handles it well, with way more realism than I expected and throws in more than a spicy dash of conspiracy theories and odd, but not unwelcome bits of humour that kept me wide-eyed and entertained.
That’s the beauty of fast-paced action and suspense in the RS genre when done right. But the characters as well as the protagonists ground the story, so strongly-crafted and so memorable that they’ll probably stay in my mind for a long time. A side-note here: the Drill Sergeant gets my vote as a fan favourite, by the way.
But River and Ava stole the show completely. River was serious and confident when he needed to be, quietly flirtatious with his ‘mouse’ in a way that made me laugh, unfailingly loyal when given his orders to stick by Ava yet never quite overstepping his boundaries as he defers to her—a rare quality in any case, matched only by his atypical appearance that isn’t quite what the usual RS hero looks like. I loved how competent they both were without the necessary posturing and their partnership—as put together as it is—did seem like a good, solid one that will outlast this outbreak.
There’s no dancing around their attraction or silly games because the stakes are too high for anything else. Battling the sudden outbreak takes priority and everything else fades into the background for now, which is what both characters do, dedicated as they are to their jobs. Yet bonds are forged in risky, life-and-death-type situations and Ava/River’s growing loyalty to each other is no less reminiscent of the brotherhood formed among soldiers who go to war together. It’s an added dimension to the usual physical and emotional connection that most readers crave for in romances and with this unshakeable bond forming in times of emergency, ‘Viral Justice’ gives this burgeoning relationship depth, but it's compressed so much within this short time span (just over 24 hours) that made me wonder if it’s merely adrenaline and sexual tension sparking between them.
The somewhat rushed conclusion aside, Rowe’s Outbreak Task Force is going to be a series I’ll be keeping an eye on—if the sequels are going to be anything like this explosive thriller, I’m down for the count.

Received an ARC for my fair review for netgalley. This is the first book in this new series and does start out with a bang. Has a lot of action since they are dealing with a deadly virus and terrorist. We have River a alpha male, which we all love, but luckily not a jerk, he listens to people and does what needs to be done. Then we have Ava, strong female lead, who does not back down, and is also take charge, together they are combustible. We do have romance, but not in your face since we are dealing with a lot of chaos, we have a little bit of everything, this book keeps you on your toes, and does not bore you. Enjoy!

Hoot! Hoot! I have found myself a new author! This book is seriously zero to sixty and then continues to climb in action, speed, dark humor, loyalty, and more. It's everything I could ask for in a book and I could NOT put it down. My geek side showed a little in how much a liked this book. I love the fact that the heroine is just as strong as the hero, in fact she's a bit smarter too.

Immediately she has River in her ear helping her through keeping the kid calm while he lines up a sniper shot to protect her. She is shakey and terrified of how today is going to go.
The two work together but are put in impossible situations to which they have to add their own sense of humor to stay sane. The book gets better and better as you read it but it starts off perfectly, as well.

What a high octain, crazy train ride. It was like an amusement ride – sit down open the book and you shoot from 0 to 100 right away.. And this isnt some one thrill and your done ride – oh no – its goes on the whole book. LOVED IT...
Being a huge fan of the authors other series Biological Response Team I was super excited to see she was writing a new one in the same world.
This series will follow the CDC here on US soil. First up is is a biological weapon attack in El Paso, Texas. And it wasn't just one attack – no sir. This author is famous for her body counts and they are again in record numbers.
As I sit here and write this review I realize I am bummed I finished the book. I need the next one NOW..

And if the organism wasn't enough there are bombs going off all over town too. River was a hoot with his crazy sense of humor – which is a coping mechanism from the hell he went through in Afghanistan. Poor Ava didn't know what to think of him at first but she knew she needed to trust him with her life. There attraction was
as fast and furious as the virus that was spreading – and as hot too..

As I sit here and write this review I realize I am bummed I finished the book. I need the next one NOW..
Special Forces soldier and medic Walter River is asked by the CDC to be microbiologist Ava Lloyd bodyguard as she is on ground zero trying to find out what the organism is that was unleashed that is killing at a fast rate. And if the organism wasn't enough there are bombs going off all over town too. River was a hoot with his crazy sense of humor – which is a coping mechanism from the hell he went through in Afghanistan. Poor Ava didn't know what to think of him at first but she knew she needed to trust him with her life. There attraction was
as fast and furious as the virus that was spreading – and as hot too..
I'm hooked on this new series and cant wait for more...

This book is INTENSE.
I LOVED IT. "Romantic Suspense" is sort of a "meh, take it or leave it" genre for me, but THIS book balanced out the "romance" and "suspense" PERFECTLY. It's incredibly well-written with an engaging plot that I absolutely could not get enough of!
Right from the beginning, River tuned in to Ava and they seemed to form a connection and sort of symbiotic relationship that held my attention. They each ended up helping each other in several different ways, and I loved reading how their relationship evolved.
River may be one of my favorite heroes. He is my idealized "military hero," comprised of total badass and a dash of "boy next door" charm. The protectiveness that he felt for Ava was truly endearing, right from the start.
I admired Ava because she kept having these new and downright crazy situations thrown at her but, with River's help, she met these challenges head-on and persevered. Ava was no shrinking violet, but I liked that she relied on River at times.
This was just a spectacular story full of gripping, edge-of-your-seat moments that had me eagerly turning the pages from beginning to end. I will DEFINITELY read more romantic suspense books by Julie!

I was on the edge of my seat at times reading this it went from zero to sixty in no time, it was non-stop fast paced action which in this day and age felt only too real.
Julie's impeccable writing leaves little to be desired, I can't believe that this was the first book of hers I've read granted it wouldn't have been my usual genre but I'm glad I gave it a bash.
A great plot with brilliant characters make this one captivating read that will have you absorbed from beginning to end.

This was my first book by Julie Rowe (though I did meet Julie years ago at a conference in NJ), and I am sad that I haven't gotten around to reading her books sooner.
This book had the PERFECT amount of suspense, thrills, intelligence, sexiness, emotion--all of it moving at a steady, heart-pounding pace.
In some bio-threat thrillers, the story gets bogged down with medical terminology and ridiculously unrealistic biological hazards. The biological and terroristic threats in this book are frighteningly possible, which only makes the story that much more terrifying.
The story was so well written, the plot had depth, and the characters and happenings drew you in from the very beginning. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I cannot wait to read the next book in the series.

This is the first book I have ever read by Julie Rowe and I must say she certainly knows how to write romantic suspense. Although I must say this book has the potential to seriously freak readers out simply because the threat posed within this book is sadly all too possible. Ava Lloyd is a doctor with the CDC who is called in to identify the origin of a bio-terrorist attack while River is the special forces medic assigned to protect and assist her. This book had everything from bio-terrorism, explosives, kidnapping, political intrigue and more. Definitely a nail-biter since most of the action in this story takes place over the period of one day. In fact, at times you might think seriously all this has happened to River and Ava in 24 hours. This book will pull you in and not let go until after the last page is turned!

Viable Threat by Julie Rowe is book one of her new Outbreak Task Force series. This is my first book by the author and I plan to read her other series Biological Response Team and I can't wait for the next book in this series. If I could I'd give this more than five stars I would because its that good.
Special Forces soldier and medic Walter River has been loaned out to the CDC to help out their team in El Paso when a drug resistant and lethal Bio-engineered strain has been released in a college town. When he meets Dr. Ava Lloyd little does he know that they'll soon be running for their lives trying to find patient zero and surviving bomb blasts. It will take a team of doctors, scientists, Homeland Security and a grumpy transit bus driving Drill Sargent ("DS") to find the radicalized person who is recruiting disgruntled college students who created and spread the disease.
Dr. Ava Lloyd has been all over the world fighting Ebola and other diseases but this is the first time she has been confronted by a bomb toting radical whose ring tone is Darth Vader's death march. But it will take a entire team to keep one step ahead of the kingpin who has convinced students to spread the antibiotic resistant pathogen with hopes that the military will leave the middle east. When Ava and River finally succumb to their attraction to each other can they keep each other alive before the disease kills another person?
This story reminded me a little of Outbreak by Robin Cook but its the way the characters all meshed together to find the cell leader before its too late. But it was the addition of the retired drill sarge who will steal the show when he's tasked with watching the students while River and Ava search for the leader. I look forward to reading the next book if its as good as Viable Threat.

3.5 stars possibly my favorite yet of the two trilogies despite the ridiculous time line. The villain was obvious early on though not the motivation. Excellent romance.

Wow! This book is non stop and had me turning pages just as quickly as possible - it's fast paced action at its best. In it, River, a special forces soldier, is assigned to assist Ava, a CDC physician, investigate a horrible illness sweeping the area. As they investigate, it quickly becomes apparent that the illness is a deliberate action and not a random occurrence.
They rush from scene to scene - Reeves providing the security and door "keys" and Ava the microbiology skills. They encounter many people that try to thwart them and some that just want them dead. Despite the serious subject matter, there a bits of humor that made me laugh out loud and a bit of romance. I loved the characters and felt invested in their story. River is swoon-worthy, but imperfect with ghosts of his own, while Ava is haunted by different ghosts from her past.
This novel also contained a line that I just loved: "Any idiot can go through life without making enemies...Congratulations. It takes character and intelligence to make people want to kill you." If that quote appeals to you, you will love this book.
This is a must read book for fans of the genre. You'll want to put this one at the top of your TBR. I'm adding the author to my must read authors' list.

Julie Rowe has written another adrenalin-filled, action-packed story filled with brainwashed terrorists, brave men and women who put their lives on the line for their country, a brave but damaged soldier and a brilliant and sassy scientist.
I cannot even begin to express my excitement at getting my grubby hands on Viable Threat after hanging out for another book since finishing the last book in Ms Rowe's Biological Response Team series. When it comes to heart-pounding suspense, no one does it quite like Ms Rowe.
I remember liking River from the previous series and wanting a story for him. Well, actually, I wanted a story for all of Ms Rowe's characters because I cannot get enough of her writing, but I digress ... I love River. He is smart, talented and accomplished. He's Special Forces, so he's a man with many skills and a force to be reckoned with. He also comes with demons of his own, flashbacks from dangerous operations in the past and perhaps a touch of PTSD.
"River didn’t sound surprised or even concerned. Like this kind of tactic was to be expected. How many times had he faced this scenario in order for him to recognize it with no dismay? How burned out, how tired, how emotionally battered did a man have to get to live in that kind of hell inside his head? Her whole body ached at the thought, at the realization."
All of that makes him the man he is, one who is dedicated, focused and not allowing his shortcomings get in the way of getting the job done. He's also got a wicked sense of humor. Perhaps it's the humor that keeps him sane in the face of all the dangerous situations he's in and the tragedies he's experienced.
“Any idiot can go through life without making enemies.” River said cheerfully. “Congratulations. It takes character and intelligence to make people want to kill you.”
And Ava is the perfect counterpoint to him. Also dedicated, but brilliant, feisty and sassy. She's tough and she's brave, and even when things get rough, difficult and dangerous, she soldiers on. She would give any soldier a run for their money with her endurance and perseverance.
“I’m not always tough, though.” She paused, then continued. “I’ve had my share of breakdowns where I cried until I looked like someone had beaten me.” “Did you leave? Stop whatever you were doing?” “No.” She sounded insulted. “I blew my nose and went back to work.” “Exactly. That’s what a tough person does. Accepts the shitty shit, vents, then finishes the job.”
While Ms Rowe brings us characters to love and a suspenseful story to entertain, she also drives home some truths and ugliness about terrorism, whether international or domestic with the bio-terriorism outbreak she uses as the crux of the story. It illustrates the dangers faced by the soldiers and law enforcement agents who fight the fight daily, much to the ignorance of the everyday person, but also the vulnerability of the young and impressionable, and the people who would exploit them. There are always people with hidden agendas, selfish ulterior motives, and a desire to hurt and destroy we are unaware of. Everyday citizens who get injured and become collateral damage. Beyond the entertainment in this story is the lesson that there are dangers all around us and there are people fighting a war which we do not necessarily see. The media is not always right, nor do they report everything. I'm not condoning becoming a vigilante or taking the enforcement out of the hands of rightful people, only saying that we need to be aware of what's going on around us rather than hide our heads in the sand.
River is right when he says:
“Wars aren’t won with might,” he said, leaning forward and lowering his voice. “They’re won with intelligence, perseverance, and conviction.”
And saying all that, Ms Rowe is not afraid to get dirty with the effects of war and the devastation that ensues as a result.
"The bastards had blown up a college kid and coffee shop, a mall, the main gate at a military base, a dorm, and city hall. He wouldn’t be surprised to find anywhere they might have worked or hidden stuff to also have IEDs."
I loved this story. And I know I will love this series. I can't wait for Smoke's story which will be next as he has always been one of my favorite characters.

I have loved every book that I've read by Julie Rowe. And Viable Threat, is no exception. If you're looking for a book that will keep you on the edge of your seat, then this is the book for you. It's the perfect start to the newest series by Julie Rowe. It has a couple of characters from her Biological Response Team series and is just as suspenseful.

Full of energetic action and suspense with a ton of intrigue. Viable Threat by Julie Rowe was the first book I've read by this author and will not be my last. It is definitely something a little different and weighs a little heavier on the suspense element and a little light on the romance. It had just enough romance to keep me happy though and did not detract at all from my enjoyment of the book at all – far from it. I was definitely excited to know that this was a first in a series, and you can be assured that I will be keeping an eye out for book two! Not to mention I am thrilled to have discovered another new author!

Viable Threat is the first book in Julie Rowe’s Outbreak Task Force series. The story has to do with a bioterrorist plot that unfolds rapidly in El Paso, Texas. Everything occurs at breakneck speed and it’s a perfect glimpse of what could happen considering the world we live in now. Special Forces Medic Walter River and Microbiologist Ava Lloyd literally meet, disarm a terrorist, and then get blown up. And that’s literally how the entire book plays out.
Rarely do I find a book that is both serious and funny at the same time. River may be a soldier that has dealt with many perilous situations but he makes it a point to keep things light by making jokes and being brutally honest. On the other hand, Dr. Lloyd isn’t a fan of soldiers because she was engaged to one who was killed in action. Together, they become a dynamic duo trying to prevent the spread of a deadly virus that seems to have been created locally in El Paso. The action is intense as well as the attraction between River and Ava. There are a lot of law enforcement agencies involved in the chaos which has all of them jockeying for control of the investigation when they should be more concerned with eliminating the threat. In the midst of all of that, River comes across as a superhero. He is fearless and determined to keep Ava safe at any cost. Ava is a brave and strong woman. Although she is a lab rat, she handles herself very well in the field. You can’t help but root for her and River. Be advised that there is a retired Drill Sergeant that steals the show close to the end of the book.
Of course, there is a mystery element involved in Viable Threat that adds another dimension to the book. It’s these layers that make the book hard to put down. There’s romance, action, sex, mystery, and a heavy dose of reality so what else is there to ask for. I will gladly read the next book in this series.

Together, they become a dynamic duo trying to prevent the spread of a deadly virus that seems to have been created locally in El Paso. The action is intense as well as the attraction between River and Ava. There are a lot of law enforcement agencies involved in the chaos which has all of them jockeying for control of the investigation when they should be more concerned with eliminating the threat. In the midst of all of that, River comes across as a superhero. He is fearless and determined to keep Ava safe at any cost. Ava is a brave and strong woman. Although she is a lab rat, she handles herself very well in the field. You can’t help but root for her and River. Be advised that there is a retired Drill Sergeant that steals the show close to the end of the book.
Of course, there is a mystery element involved in Viable Threat that adds another dimension to the book. It’s these layers that make the book hard to put down. There’s romance, action, sex, mystery, and a heavy dose of reality so what else is there to ask for. I will gladly read the next book in this series.

I've decided to throw out any type of description that I may come up with, because frankly, all it would accomplish is to reveal spoilers. Instead, I'm going to just type up all of my feelings and thoughts. Viable Threat started out with a bang, and IT NEVER SLOWED DOWN, which kept my heart racing cover to cover. And actually, it still hasn't slowed down hours later, as I can't get this insanely EXCITING story out of my head. Walter River is a super yummy special forces soldier, and Dr. Ava Lloyd is a CDC microbiologist. I absolutely LOVED both of them so much that even with a few questionable choices were made, it never dimmed my love. Julie Rowe is absolutely BRILLIANT with her insanely talented writing style, and I couldn't love her more if I tried. She's so AMAZING that I'm a new gushing fan girl that needs more of her work, like I need coffee to kick start my day. I stayed plastered to the edge of my seat throughout the whole story, as the loud f-bomb dropping worthy twists never stopped flying at me, and I NEVER saw the unsub coming (Yeah, a huge Criminal Minds fan)! I could go on and on, but I'm going to quit before I start singing to this EPIC author, but know this, I NEED EVERY BOOK OF HERS ON MY KINDLE ASAP! So basically, I'm HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMENDING this action packed story full of intense suspenseful goodness to EVERY ONE OF YOU!

This is a good romantic suspense focusing on a plague that is killing thousands. Because of the virulence of the disease, there is a time element that amps up the stress factor. I really like the couple. Julie Rowe really knows how to write smart heroines and surprisingly kind and funny (if a bit horny) heroes. Unfortunately, I had to take a 1/2 off because the couple is involved in just one too many explosions. I think they both would have been incapacitated by the third one. Still, a good thriller that kept my attention and made me want to race to the end.

Wow!!! This is the first book I've read by Julie Rowe and I'm pretty sure I'm gonna need to pick more up. Totally digging her writing style and the way she pulls readers in. Impressive.
Walter River is a Special Forces soldier who specializes in many things, but has recently been given the task of protecting a CDC doctor (Ava Lloyd) who's trying to find patient zero of a deadly outbreak in El Paso. Yep, it's a lot to take in immediately, but it works...stay with me. Within minutes of reporting to "duty", River is helping medical respondents care for outbreak patients, kills a man and is nearly blown up.
Ava Lloyd is a CDC doctor who's first field responsibility is a dozy. Thinking she's alone in a coffee shop believed to be ground zero for the outbreak, she starts to collect samples. Only she's not alone. One minute she's talking to a potential threat, the next...well...the next she's literally thrust in to a non-stop whirlwind to try to identify the cause of this deadly outbreak. Oh...and her partner is ridiculously hot and actually respects her. So there's that.
This ^^^^^^, this is just the suspense that happens within the first few chapters. This is non-stop suspense, and I mean NON-STOP! Be prepared to turn those pages faster and faster as more and more drama unfolds, exposing the mastermind behind the deadly outbreak. Although, truth be told, I figured out who it was early, but it didn't stop me from finishing. After all....I had to find out if River and Ava got their HEA, right?
