Christopher Wright is the author of dozens of horror fiction books for children and young adults. He writes under the pseudonyms Johnathan Rand and Christopher Knight. Almost all of Wright's books (save American Chillers) take place in his home state of Michigan.
First off I am going purely on the thoughts of I work in in elementary school so I am basing this off what I think the 5th and 4th graders would read.
First thoughts, WOW this is fantastic! There is nothing in this book that would make me think my kid shouldn't read it. Is it creepy? YES! Is it suspenseful? YES! Will I be terrified of old torn up dolls forever? Probably!
Trent and Athena live in Michigan (the only reason I picked this book up honestly) and they are on their way to pick up their mom in Wisconsin with their dad when their car breaks down. A friendly looking old man picks them up and helps fix it. While the kiddos are at the Shumakers house they go exploring and stumble across a creepy village of dolls. Things only get worse from there......
Nightmare Nation is for an age audience of I'm thinking 10 to 15, I got this book for my kid and wanted to read it first to make sure she wouldn't get nightmares when she reads it, and I'm happy to say I think she will. What I really like about this author is that he knows what he is writing about, the cities, the places (this doll valley does exist, I've seen it) which makes his books real. It is one of the reasons my kid likes these books so much because she can recognize cities and how the characters meet the characters in the next book. For middle aged kids that like to get chills, this book is a great choice.
When this book came out, I would eat nothing but chocolate. I also worked at a McDonald's in those days. I would get a lot of asshole customers and one day this guy came in screaming about his hamburger not having pickles.
I grabbed it, took it to the back and proceeded to take a shit on it. I brought it back to the man and said "here, eat that instead."
He then took a bite and asked if I put chocolate on it. He then asked for lemonade, so I grabbed a cup and pissed in it in front of a huge line of customers. "Here you go," I said.
Everyone looked shocked and disgusted. He said "wow, I thought mcdonalds was a world clasa restaurant." He took the lemonade.
This book was a great read because of it being horror. In the book Trent and Athena Savage and their father are driving up M-33 but then their car breaks down so a kind man and his wife help them with their car and lets them stay the night at their house but later they find a village of dolls and they are alive. So Trent, Athena and their father have to survive and get to their destination. While being chased and being attacked by dolls. Will they survive read to find out.
