Promise Me doesn’t go from zero to 60 in two seconds, no... it starts right off at 60 out of the gate and just hits the ground running!
My heart was pounding right away, living in Rae’s shoes as she frantically did everything she could to save Clint. Then after, my heart was breaking right along with hers as things moved to the hospital. Eventually the story progresses, bringing my heartbeat to a more suitable rate.
I think we all can agree that Howard Clarke continues being the worst dad of the year, so he’s nothing if not consistent. And can we talk about Cecilia for a moment? I loved how she began to show her strength in this book, and I hope that’s something that doesn’t regress with her. I have a feeling she’s going to need every ounce of strength in her to face what comes next.
I LOVED Clint in this installment, too. You can really see how we’re peeling back his layers and uncovering the goodness in him that was buried, presumably by hanging around people like Roy and Marina. Whether the accident was a catalyst or not, Clint really started to mature and not only was it noticeable to Rae, but to others who were around him as well. Rae continued to show her fighting spirit and unwavering strength, not only for herself, but for Clint and her mom as well. Her mom still has a long path ahead of her I feel, but I hope it ends with happiness for both her and Rae.
Play With Me had a great foundation and really set things up with character development, which really allowed Promise Me to push the story forward. I thought the writing and dialogue were stronger in this book than in PWM, so I can’t wait to see how Clint and Rae’s story will come together in the final installment.
And gosh, that ending! Oh Clint, oh sweetheart... what have you done? Don’t break my heart like this.
**I received an ARC of this book.
