What?! How did I not remember to rate and review this before? Argh. Still finding these stray reviews in my ghost closet...

I really loved this story, set in the days of the Haitian earthquake. The heroine is an American aid worker and the hero an American soldier, both of whom must battle the elements as well as their own pasts. I loved the colorful characters and appreciated the unusual setting. Be sure to pick up this one and be ready to grab book two when you finish.

This really wasn't my favorite. I found the dialogue and interactions among the characters really... unnatural? Especially with Nick. 🤷 The book also wasn't paced very well-- at some times it was be really slow and then it would suddenly speed up.

Well, let’s just say I was not expecting to like this book as much as I did.
Kaylan was so real and her relationship with her brothers and parents were delightful. I may not be the introvert Kaylan is, but I could still sympathize with her indecisiveness and her hesitation about doing something so drastic as going on a six month mission to Haiti instead of staying home where it was safe and familiar. Her struggles after the earthquake and her emotions made me want to hug her.
Sarah Beth and her bubbly personality was such a great contrast to Kaylan!
I enjoyed Nick and his relationship with Kaylan’s brother. It was neat to see glimpses of Navy SEALs that aren’t overly dramatized. Also, Nick’s willingness to apologize, and his care and concern for Kaylan made me feel like this was a true story. I really liked how Nick was willing to step away so that Kaylan would find her true rescuer in God, not man.
This story is Christian and I really appreciated the way that was woven into the story and not just tacked in as an afterthought. While I didn’t cry when the earthquake hit, or death took it’s toll, the absolute faith and trust in God during the midst of the devastation brought me to tears. I don’t think I could have sung about God’s great faithfulness and mercy only moments after losing the breadwinner of the family and seeing all the destruction! Wow! I’ve heard stories from some friends at church who have been working in Haiti for years and who told stories of the earthquake. I’ve seen pictures of the devastation, but this story took me there.

There were some kisses but they were sweet and pretty much just mentioned. There are mentions of prostitutes in Haiti and a voodoo priest, but nothing was vile. Mentions of blood, but nothing overly descriptive, but I wouldn’t recommend this to younger readers because of the events.
I’m looking forward to reading the next book.

On the day of her university graduation, Kaylan Richards stood at the crossroads of her future. She could choose a safe and secure route, work at her family's dance studio until she begins her internship and gets her certification. She would be near home and family. Or she could take the road less traveled, making a decision to follow the Lord's leading in a completely different direction. That would take her to Haiti as a volunteer for six months putting her recent training to use in a more challenging situation.

Kaylan's choices were not so simple. A few years ago she gave her heart to Nick Carmichael, a Navy SEAL and best buds and fellow Team member of her brother Micah. But he had crushed her love and hopes when he had suddenly called off their relationship, shortly after his first deployment. Now, on her day of graduation, he was back. He wanted a second chance with her. She was angry with both Micah and Nick. What of her decision now?

Kaylan and her best friend, Sarah Beth, were finally settled into Rhonda's extra bedroom in Haiti's capitol city, Port-au-Prince. They were both working with Rhonda's organization as volunteers, Kaylan as the clinic nurse, and Sarah Beth with the children in the neighborhood, teaching them to read. They were quickly falling in love with the people whose spirit of survival seemed indomitable. The poverty was overwhelming, but the people were tough. Over time, it felt as if the girls were the ones learning the most...about survival and what really mattered in life.

Then came disaster. A large earthquake hit the country, especially in the capitol city of Port-au-Prince where the girls were living. Lives all around them were lost, and Kaylan and Sarah Beth were trapped in the collapsed house with no way to escape until someone could come to dig them out. By that time, it was too late for Sarah Beth. Kaylan was pulled out, only hurt a little, but emotionally broken and in shock. In an effort to put off facing the loss of her best friend, she threw herself into the work of helping those injured at the clinic.

When Micah and his family and Nick heard about the earthquake, the SEAL buddies made use of their contacts to fly out to Haiti to bring the girls back home. By some miracle they found Kaylan--feverish, malnourished, dazed, working like a bulldog to help as many victims as possible, but on the verge of collapse. While she healed quickly enough at home in the hospital, it soon became obvious that Kaylan needed time to heal emotionally and spiritually. She had been tested, and believed she had been found wanting. This was when Nick began to prove to her and her family his rock solid commitment to her. Only he seemed to be able to reach her heart and help her through the nightmares, the flashbacks, and her insecurities. It took time.

The author, Kariss Lynch, has written a powerful story that touches our hearts with its poignancy, heights of adventure, and the depths of despair. It shakes our hearts from their complacency and makes us ask ourselves how our faith in Christ would survive if faced with a similar challenge.

Additionally, the author successfully communicates to her readers the plight of the Haitians both before the 7.0 magnitude earthquake and after. She clearly portrays the dual struggle for physical survival and the spiritual battle being waged over peoples' souls in a society where the culture combines voodoo beliefs with those of Christianity in a twisted hybrid that benefits no one. Yet in spite of the spiritual darkness, flickers of light shine out when someone finds their hope and purpose in Jesus.

Thirdly, I was drawn to the complex relationship Nick has with Kayla in light of his calling and desire to serve his country as a SEAL, and Kayla's struggle to deal with this. The reader is pulled into the fray as the two attempt to reach an understanding they can both live with.

I enjoyed the finely tuned balance the author found between struggle and victory, between weakness and strength of spirit, between belief and practice of faith. It is not easy to write this kind of balance. I have often read stories where struggles and angst in life are overly drawn out--where the resolution is too hastily contrived. Some tales leave the reader dissatisfied or feeling as if something was missing. But I believe this book offers the readers a satisfying resolution while at the same time making it clear the tale will continue as a series. With an equal amount of character development and action, I can highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys Christian fiction novels.

Everything I've been reading lately involves characters who maybe grew up knowing the Bible but want nothing to do with it now till something causes them to rethink their stance. SHAKEN, pun slightly intended, shook things up by having characters who are saved but then they face tough life issues that have them questioning faith-it makes the story more relatable and avoids being "too preachy". I thoroughly enjoyed this book and loved the usage of a real-life event to make the story more real. The hope and healing in Haiti amazes me and this book brought it back to the forefront of my mind.

So, I found this book at Dollar Tree a while ago and was purging through all of my books and decided to give this one a try. This was my first introduction to Christian Fiction, so that made me keep reading even though it started out really slow for me. I felt a little disoriented reading it, like it took me forever to figure out what was going on and where Kariss was going with the story, but it did speed up eventually and was actually good. But it hit another plateau. It took me a little while to finish it and I bought the other books in the series before reading this one. The other two are so much better. At first, I didn't like Kaylan very much, but I realized after reading the other books in the series that she was just going through a broken time during this book and I needed another perspective of her. Overall, okay read and I would recommend just to be a precursor for the other books in the series.

This book was absolutely A M A Z I N G. It had the perfect blend of Christian faith, natural disaster, trauma, blind faith, love and of course a rescue. I am in love with this book.

It's perfect for older teens. Be sure you understand that it's not for young teens, but instead for older teens. This book has a death scene that is absolutely horrible and leaves you crying. It's not for the faint of heart.

My heart ached for Kaylan at every turn. The trauma she endured and relived reminds me of someone I know who went through similar after effects after returning home. Even when back home nothing is the same and in a way never will be.

I love how much the author was able to intertwine Christian Faith and putting your faith in him. I'm at a loss of words that could better depict this story. It's a definite addition to my personal library.

I almost stopped reading during Part 1. The relationships between the characters were so awkward and unrealistic. Literally every person in Kaylan's life (three brothers, a best friend, an ex-boyfriend, her parents, and her grandparents) dotes on her and caters to her and worries about her. Every line spoken is someone giving her biblical advice or scripture. Even her younger teenage brother is constantly trying to give her advice and encouragement. They all pray and ask for God's guidance constantly. After Kaylan finally goes through a real hardship, no one can stand to leave her side. They're beside themselves with worry. It is just too much. Kaylan is spoiled and whines constantly. She is dramatic and needy. I don't recommend this one, unless you enjoy Lifetime movies with unlikable, undeserving characters.

This book is a fictional story based in Haiti when they were shaken to the core by their biggest earthquake. The main character, Kaylan, goes through many changes and trials that ultimately break her and allow God to use her in a mighty way. Excellent book and can’t wait to read Book 2 and 3

Wow, so many feels in this book. Knowing that God is there in the good & bad is so hard, but man good things come from it! Everything happens for a reason and as hard as it is opening your eyes to the beauty is life changing. I can't imagine what Kaylan went through but her strength was amazing.

3.5 stars. It was ok, the story was interesting enough, and I appreciated the faith content...but, the relationship between all of the characters (not just the romance) was just awkward in my opinion.

Kaylan Richards just graduated from the University of Alabama and is ready to start her adult life… just not in the way her family anticipated. She did not expect her biggest regret, Navy SEAL Nick Carmichael, to be in attendance when she made the announcement that she was going to Haiti with her friend Sarah Beth instead of pursuing a career as a dietician. Nick had chosen the military over her. She is willing to give him a second chance, however, as she sees a vulnerability in him that did not exist a few years ago. Nick and her family are surprised by her decision to leave, but Kaylan feels the “road less traveled” is a God-ordained trip. She will spend six months working with the impoverished and malnourished, giving her a chance to use her education while truly seeing God at work.

Kaylan and Sarah Beth arrive in Haiti, prepared to work with the Hands and Feet organization. Kaylan is not prepared for what she encounters, including the battle of religions that is evident after meeting Eliezer, the local voodoo priest. A massive earthquake changes everything for Kaylan, and she feels abandoned by God. Nick’s SEAL unit is deployed to the area and they bring her home, where she refuses to discuss the life-changing event. Will Nick be able to convince Kaylan that God is her stronghold and that He hears her cries? Will she be able to return to Haiti to finish what she started?

Lynch’s debut grabs the reader from the first page. The story is broken into four parts, alternating between Alabama and Haiti. At its core, this is a love story. But in reality, it is so much more. Lynch paints beautiful scenes filled with vivid details, making it easy for the reader to envision events that many in the Western world will never experience personally. The dialogue is gripping, allowing the reader to feel a part of Kaylan’s heartaches and joys.

Lynch has a number of takeaways, including: “I don’t have to be completely qualified or equipped to help; I just need to be faithful,” “Decisions that change the course of your life are rarely easy,” and the reminder that change (whether big or small) only occurs one person at a time.

The story is well-researched, and the characters well-drawn. It is realistic, has a strong faith message, and is identifiable, because we all have doubts regarding whether or not God hears us. A preview of Book #2 is included.

"Shaken" is a Christian romance novel. I thought this novel would be mainly set in Haiti and show the struggles they deal with, but only a third of the book occurs in Haiti and much of the detailed description was of the earthquake and the immediate aftermath. Since I've read some nonfiction about what Haiti is like, I was confused that problems like AIDs were never mention in the novel, especially as the characters were giving medical care to bleeding people.

I also had a hard time getting immersed in the story because I was constantly confused by what we were supposed to think about the characters. We're told that Kaylan deeply trusts her family and distrusts Nick, but after the earthquake, she more open (trusting) with Nick than her family. And I wasn't sure if we were supposed to believe that Kaylan was struggling against a genuine call from God or if she was simply following her friend's vision and figured God would approve. We do eventually get a clear answer to that one, but by then I had new questions.

Much of the book was Kaylan thinking things over rather than actually interacting with people. If Kaylan and her best friend had interacted more--like showing them struggling together with culture shock (which was blurred over) or if the the memories were shared earlier--I would have understood how much that relationship defined Kaylan's identity. As it is, it came across as a good but casual friendship until halfway through the book.

Kaylan frequently prayed at God and did Christian things, but she didn't really know God. She referred to faith in God as "blind faith," but it isn't blind if you know the One you're putting your trust it. She told a Haitian that Jesus died to "heal us" but never said from what, and I wondered if she really understood why Christ died. She constantly told God what to do and judged Him for not fixing things in her way and timing. So she's going to fix things since God is failing in His job. She further questions God after the earthquake. While some answers were seen about what good could come out of the earthquake, it didn't seem like she'd grown in her understanding of God.

There was no sex or bad language. Overall, if you're interested in the Haiti aspect, you'll probably get more out of a non-fiction book. If you want a novel about a shallow Christian undergoing deep trauma and her family's efforts to help her heal emotionally, you might like this book.

I received this book as a review copy from the publisher.

Shaken is the debut novel from Kariss Lynch. As such, it is a little of what you’d expect from a first time author — perhaps a little stiff stylistically, the characters a little too good – but there are a lot of positives that kept this reader turning the pages. Lynch’s passion for her subject and the excellent research create a really good book. I expect really good things from Kariss Lynch in the future.

Kaylan is a new college graduate set to change the world. She goes to Haiti with her best friend, Sara Beth, determined to make an impact on the impoverished residents of the slums. Met with hostility from the local voodoo practitioner and the overwhelming obstacles of a country filled with despair and desperation, she still embraces the challenges. But then the earthquake hits, and Kaylan’s world is changed.

There are a lot of positives in Shaken. Kaylan and her love interest, Navy SEAL, Nick, are both wounded by their traumatic experiences. Their reactions to the traumas are realistic. Their romance is also very sweet. I loved Nick’s sacrificial nature. Many of the secondary characters, including Rhonda the Haiti aid worker, Kaylan’s grandfather, and Abe the Haitian interpreter, speak truth to Kaylan at a time when she needs it. Lynch shows how God works through circumstances and others to grow us into what He has planned. Lynch also does a good job of bringing the reader to the devastation of the earthquake in Haiti. Nick’s SEAL mission seemed a bit out of place, but I suspect it will be a main feature in the next book of the series.

Filled with romance, suspense and a strong faith message, Shaken is a good debut for Kariss Lynch.

Recommended.

Great read- after the first few chapters prepare to be quickly swept up in Kaylan's story. It's one of those books you'll get sucked into quickly, and spend every free minute reading until you're done. As someone who's seen Haiti first hand, Kariss did a great job doing the country's history and turmoil justice as well as showing how God so often uses someone's time there to shape them into who they were meant to be.

This is a great read if you're looking for an entertaining story that skips the crass romance is often known for, and also skips the "cheese" that christian fiction is often dripping with. Seriously, you'll be surprised. I'd also recommend if you're traveling to Haiti to begin falling in love with the people there and learning context before going. And additionally, a great gift for young women everywhere to help them see what true love looks like from a man, not just someone who says they love you, but someone who shows it through patience and self control. I've bought it as a gift for a number of family members as well to begin seeing tastes of who God is, and to wrestle with the age old question of how a good God can exist in a world with so many bad things.

Great first book to the series, can't wait to see what happens as Kaylan's story continues! I'm pre-ordering Shadowed now!

First off let me start off by saying that the book is broken up into 4 parts and so I wanted to break up my review into the same four parts, however the whole book is just that good I didn't want to do that I feel like I would be taking the book apart to much . In first Kaylan and Sarah Beth(BFF) graduate college a semester early and decide its there turns to take on the world, well at least Hati, so Kaylan has the daunting task of telling her parents her plan, but before that can happen her past has come back and now she is having 2nd thoughts about everything. Her and Sarah have a bond that Kaylan can turn to Sarah as a sister and ask her for anything or help her with anything they are like 2 peas in a pod. I had the hardest time putting this book down it was amazing it keeps you wanting for more and just want to put life on hold for a few hours just to read this book. From the very first page to the very last page the momentum of the story does not stop. This book hand down would get 8 stars if I could give it that. If you are ready to read a book that keeps you wanting more this is your book I would have to say I could easily compare where righting and hold you in the book style to Dee Henderson.I cant think of one negative thing to say about it.

I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This in no way influenced my review of the book.

Shaken gave me all the feels. I usually do not cry while reading books, but while I was reading Shaken I cried for at least an hour.

I connected so well with all of the characters. Kariss Lynch's writing style is so incredible that I cannot even express how much I enjoyed it. I read 3/4 of this book in one day which I only do with books that I love immensely.

My favorite part of Shaken was how God's love was expressed through difficult situations. I am accostomed to Christian romance novels being happy and sappy, but this novel was more realistic. It expressed the struggles of living in the world, but not being of the world.

Additionally, I loved this book because I felt like I was in the novel. Much of Shaken is set in Haiti. I have never been to Haiti, but I felt as if I was there with the characters. I felt like their friends were my friends.

I feel like everyone would find something in this novel with which they could connect; Therefore, I would recommend this novel to anyone and everyone.

Shaken book one in the Heart of a Warrior series by Kariss Lynch is a very good book. It tells of Kaylan and her best friend Sarah Beth going to Haiti before the earthquake in 2010. How they wanted to help the poor and give them hope and a future. They are in Haiti when the earthquake hits.
It also is a story of heartbreak and love. Nick and Kaylan knew each other for a year or so and then he went with the SEALs and broke her heart. Now he is back. What has changed and how will they get along?
Shaken is broken up in four parts. Each part she is either at home in Alabama or in Haiti. You see Kaylan as she works through her heartaches and troubles and how she finally lets God take control.
I enjoyed Shaken and think you will also.

I love Christian fiction, but this book started out more like a eutopia of how our lives and families should be as believers. Every character believes and every aspect of their lives is lived on their belief in God, even the teenager. It was too rose colored as very few live that way though we all strive to.

Then the girls go to Haiti and we start to see faith questioned, especially after the earthquake and return home, which made the rose colored picture of Christianity more real with the hard question of "Why God?" being explored. It was a good book; however, my gift isn't for Haiti so it was hard to relate on that aspect, but it was touching seeing the struggle after loss and getting back to trying to understand and being right with God again. Will I read the 2nd book? Probably, because I anticipate it's not going to be so rose colored and there will be real doubts, questions and struggles to understand God's will and trusting Him.

I cannot express enough how much I loved this book. Kaylan is one of the most endearing characters I've read this year. My compassion for her multiplied with every page. My heart ached when hers ached. When she lost herself, I lost myself, too. It's rare to go on such an emotional roller coaster ride with a character, and it was thoroughly enjoyable.

I liked how Nick moved in with purpose from the beginning of the book. He was loyal from the beginning, so we didn't have the typical tension of whether or not they'd fall in love, and rather watched two people who were deeply in love struggle to overcome the challenges that kept them apart. It was refreshing to see the challenges in their relationship approached from a unique angle.

Her vivid descriptions pulled me deep into the story, and brought me to tears on multiple occasions. I will definitely be reading this book again.

This is a good debut novel. A college graduate and her best friend (Kaylan and Sarah Beth) go to Haiti to work for a short term. They are there during the earthquake. Kaylan must face the struggle of believing in a God who says He is good in the face of such tragedy and death. Interwoven in the story is her previous romance with a fellow who dumped her when he left on deployment as a navy SEAL. Right before she went to Haiti, he came back and wanted to renew their relationship.

This whole series is remarkably captivating. I love the way the main characters hold strong faith, but struggle with tough emotions--no plastic smiles here. The mix of community, family, and romance in the story anchor us readers as we bite our nails through danger after danger. Altogether, Heart of a Warrior gets my enthusiastic recommendation as a Great Weekend Read -- maybe even three weekends!
