Lise in space
Lise is a proud junker, from a line of junkers. She was clearing out the latest area with her family when she discovered an AI run ship, Blue. Heading out with Blue to find another haul to dismantle for payoff, she gets sucked through a wormhole into uncharted regions. They've seen the odd human, but she's never heard of any of them. But what she's found out is that humans make a lot of money for slavers, so avoiding them is her highest priority. To do that she needs people who know the area, and aren't upset with working with a space rat. So, seedy bars it is then. She finds the perfect crew in the middle of their own heist. Only problem is, well, they're all wanted by various governments.
Spoilers ahead.
This was fun. I've read her naga shifter series and was excited to see her break into the sci-fi genre. Lise is fine within the shadows. She's strong without being brittle or hateful. She's adaptable. The guys are all a little insectoid, which made things crazy. I would love a bit more description on Evik. Picturing him is hard in me head. We're given chitin, antenna, mandibles, 6 appendages (arms/legs) and segmented. So...ant like? Beetle? The scent communication makes me think more any like. But that doesn't fit the flexibility mentioned. Morph is described as almost butterfly like and Alder as a fae/almost dragonfly like humanoid. Alder is running from an arranged marriage, Morph from his days as a science experiment, and I can't remember why Evik is off his world. While there is some world building, it's mostly from the time on an enemy planet. There's a little background story but not how they banded together. A lot of action happened in this book, but after you finish it the questions start popping up. Oh, and mild trigger warnings. The enemy that grabs them has a slave trade. Females are tested for breeding capabilities, males are sold for labor or games. So, when Lise is separated from the crew, tests are run. Nothing mentioned other than an ache when she wakes up. The other women, one is damaged from something done to her but nothing is said, only assumed. So, all were tested, some already sold, possible experiments to make them compatible. But nothing in depth, I just think it deserves a mention for sensitive readers. I loved the byplay between the crew, and how the lone human stood up for the least human looking member. For a being not used to too many aliens, she adapted to the variety of beings without a qualm.
