Emma Mitchell may enjoy sprinkling romance into the lives of others, but her own plans involve a single first-class ticket to culinary school in Europe.
When her best friend, Jon Noble, suddenly moves back to Ransom, Emma’s fairly certain her life can’t get any better…until her matchmaking schemes nosedive, her culinary future falls flat, and a life-long friendship begins to teeter on the brink of something unexpected.
With a little inspiration from Jane Austen’s classic and a touch of Blue Ridge charm, will Jon and Emma discover that what they need the most may be the last thing they’re trying to find?
Pepper D Basham has been telling tales ever since she was a little girl. When her grandmother called her a “writer” at the age of ten, Pepper took it as gospel and has enjoyed various types of writing styles ever since. A native of the Blue Ridge Mountains, mom of five, speech-language pathologist, and lover of chocolate, Pepper enjoys sprinkling her native Appalachian culture into her fiction wherever she can. She currently resides in the lovely mountains of the New River Valley in Virginia.
I absolutely adored A Match for Emma! While I have enjoyed all of the stories in the Mitchell's Crossroads series, I have to say this is my favorite. Her love for the people and the beautiful Appalachian mountains that are her home make an unforgettable setting for her stories. If I could name one fictional town I would love to visit, it would be Ramson.
Pepper Basham is a master storyteller, weaving together endearing characters, Appalachian humor, romance and a compelling inspirational thread that stirred my heart.
While I appreciated the nod to Jane Austen's Emma, I found that Ms. Basham's unique voice gave this retelling relevance in our daily lives. Her skill as a master storyteller is reflected in the way her readers take to heart and apply some of the nuggets of wisdom that are shared throughout her stories. The best friends to more trope is the best! I loved Emma's generous heart and humble spirit, and Jonathan's wisdom, loyalty and tender heart.
I hope this is not the last we read of the Mitchell family. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author/publisher and was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine.
It was great to return to Ransom. I could feel the small town warmth and see the beautiful scenery. Emma's brother Trigg and Mama Mitchell were great secondary characters. In this novel, I just didn't connect with Emma. The epilogue was wonderful though - loved it.
Brace yourselves because I’m about to go into extreme fangirl mode over Pepper Basham’s third novel in the Mitchell’s Crossroads series- A Match For Emma.
There’s so much I can gush about. First off, I was grateful for the opportunity to revisit the charming town of Ransom and the fun cast of characters I’ve grown to love! (And maybe even obsess over. LOL) It was like ‘coming home’ in a way because this author always invites us readers into the heart of her stories. Mama Mitchell’s sage advice. Daphne’s cafe. That fabulous smiling dog, Haas. It’s all in there!! And in this book, the spotlight shines on the youngest Mitchell sibling, Emma.
Having met Emma in the previous stories I thought I had a pretty good capture of her character, but I was wrong. In a good way! This gal had some depth to her! In fact, her character arc is one of my favorite elements of this story. It was heart-strengthening to read.
Okay, now I need to devote some time to gush over Jon Noble. Now note that this amazing story is inspired by Jane Austen’s Emma, and George Knightley is my favorite Austen hero ever! That being said, Jon Noble was just as admirable and swoony!!! His tender affection toward Emma, his soul-touching endeavors at romancing her, all of it made my romance-lovin’ heart swell to epic proportions.
From the engaging first page to the sigh-inducing epilogue, this story just brims with witty banter, charming humor, and tons of heart.
*I received a copy from the author. All opinions are my own.
I can’t say enough good things about this book! I absolutely love the Mitchell’s Crossroads series and have been anxiously awaiting Emma and Jon’s novel. I expected their friendship to love story to be especially precious, as feelings of comraderie began to turn in a romantic direction. Well, the story highly surpassed my expectations and has left me with the most wonderful of happily-ever-after feelings of joy since I finished reading it.
Jon and Emma were so obviously right for each other and it was so much fun to see them realize it, too. I loved reading about all of their special traditions that they had as friends, such as playing Scrabble together and movie night, among other things.
A Match for Emma had plenty of light-hearted moments, yet didn’t shy away from delving into deeper issues, such as grief and self-worth. I loved the way the author seamlessly wove God’s truth throughout the entire book. And if you haven’t read the other books in the series, I still believe that you could pick up A Match for Emma and enjoy it on its own merit. I loved this story from start to finish.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
It took me a while to get into this somewhat leisurely-paced story and connect with the characters, but by the halfway point I was invested and eager to see Jon and Emma finally realize what they have. The plot follows Jane Austen's Emma so it felt too predictable, but it was fun to match up the characters and see how the author put her own twist on the story with the details. There is a strong sense of community in Ransom, and especially at Daphne's cafe, where Emma practices new recipes on unwilling locals. There is a nice balance of humor and heart, with Emma and Jon's friendly banter and teasing, but also holding each other accountable for their flaws. There is a unique level of loyalty and devotion in their friendship, and my favorite parts are when they began to be attracted to each other on a romantic level (this author excels at kissing scenes!) The supporting cast of family and friends gives depth to the story and I hope to see more of Liam and Kayla in future books! The inspirational message comes across pretty strongly in the latter part of the book, and Emma and Jon both encourage and support each other in overcoming their weaknesses.
(I received a complimentary copy of the book; all opinions expressed in this review are my own)
Oh friends, this was super cute! I’ve been a fan of Ms. Basham’s for a few years now, especially since she seems to love Jane Austen as much as I do. ;) So when I heard this one was going to be based off of Austen’s Emma, I knew I was in for a treat. And oh what a sweet treat it is! I love a good friends-to-lovers trope and it is presented so very wonderfully here. Plus there’s the southern charm of the Mitchell clan and the town they call home which just burrows down deep in my southern-born-and-raised heart.
First, can I just mention once again how much I love the friendship between Emma and Jon? Like I said before, watching a friendship turn to something more is one of my favorites tropes in literature and Jon and Emma’s friendship is just so delightful and real. I think that’s what I appreciated most about it. There was real chemistry between them, they truly loved and cared for each other deeply and they had done for years, it shone through their every interaction. This is no attempt at making characters good friends, this is a true friendship that feels natural and honest. The spark that dances between them is adorable, but the foundation of years of friendship makes the romance that much more compelling. At least for me! And I also loved the way every single person around them could see how they truly felt about each other long before they could. A particular conversation between Emma and her mama just made me grin all over! :)
Then, of course, there’s all the shenanigans Emma instigates (and the ensuing dramatics that come with), and best of all, the family that is the heart at the center of this series of books. I do love these Mitchell’s, every single one. The way they know one another so well and no matter how many times one or another may say or do something they regret, forgiveness and love flows through every time. Sometimes, do you ever wish a fictional family were real? I’d love to spend time with the Mitchell’s!
Overall, this was simply a wonderful tribute to Austen’s classic with a twangy southern twist to make things fun. I flew through the pages with a huge smile on my face. I think you will too, so I suggest finding a copy for yourself asap, settle down in your favorite chair, and whisk away for a few delightful hours!

I loved this book. Jon and Emma were the perfect example of a good best-friend relationship. I loved that they were both willing to step out on a limb and call each other out for things that the other did that were unbecoming of who they were meant to be as Christians. Most of all, I loved that God's grace and mercy were themes woven through this novel, especially in the closing chapters. Though the romance part of the book wasn't my favourite aspect of the story, it definitely shone a bright light as well. Friends to 'more' is my favourite type of love story . . . perhaps because my own love story started out as 'just friends'. 4.5 stars, and my favourite of the series
A Match for Emma is a special story that speaks to my heart. No matter the location or time period, Pepper Basham spins a great story, but nowhere does she shine more than with Appalachian settings. Southern mores and phrases add to the story’s charm, taking me back to my growing up years in the mountains of north Georgia. Basham paints pictures with her words and creates rich, memorable characters.
A Match for Emma is the story of Emma and Jon – close lifelong friends, reconnected after a three-year separation during which they kept in constant contact. Their story is full of southern charm, snappy dialogue, brilliant humor, and spiritual gems applicable to our daily faith walk. In an effort to escape the expectations placed upon him, Jon moved to New York and became a counselor. The town of Ransom was everything to Emma and she loved playing the role of matchmaker.
The friends-to-something-more theme is a favorite of mine, for what better foundation upon which to build a lasting relationship is a true friendship? The pacing of Emma and Jon’s journey is perfect. And as in real life, conflict came from seemingly different life goals and from trying to direct their own paths rather than humbly seeking God’s guidance. Fans of Jane Austen will love the connection, but the story works well even if you’re one of those rare individuals (like me) who have never read any of her classics.
I hated to see A Match for Emma end and hope for more Mitchell’s Crossroads stories. 5 stars because I enjoyed Jon and Emma's story so much! Highly recommended.
I received a copy of this book through JustRead Tours. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
"She told me yesterday that sometimes God's paths are too dark for us to see, but that we don't need to be afraid, because God can see in the dark. He knows the way."
Such a heart-rending story of loss, owning the grief, and finding hope in the midst of grief. With her sharp sense of humor and great banter, Pepper Basham livens up the predictable plot that closely follows Jane Austen's Emma with the lovable characters of the Mitchell clan. Jon and Emma's past grief and how they deal with it presently gives hope for the future and really brings home what a lived-out faith looks like. Their close-knit friendship takes a while to shift to romance but walking through their lifelong camaraderie as Jon returns home to Ransom feels like being wrapped up in a favorite blanket. And returning to the small town of Ransom, with the nosy but loving neighbors and the hustle of Daphne's cafe where everyone gathers to eat, is always fun and heart-warming. Though this is book 3 of the series, it can be read as a stand-alone. But having read the previous two books will add to better understanding the other members of Emma's family who play vital roles her story.
If you enjoy contemporary romance, you will enjoy this book. If you've been a fan of Pepper Basham and Mitchell's Crossroads series, this book will hit a sweet spot as Emma finally sees her match and lands in love without even realizing it. Now we need a gut-wrenching story about the oldest Mitchell sibling Trigg....
I received a copy of the book from the publisher/author via JustRead Publicity Tours and was under no obligation to post a positive review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.
Pepper Basham has crafted a heartwarming story, inspired by Austen’s Emma, and set in the cozy modern-day community of small-town Ransom, nestled in the Blue Ridge.
Emma Mitchell is relatable, loyal, and endearing. She is young and starry-eyed. Emma has dreams and plans and princess-like hair and a seemingly endless supply of optimism. I love that Emma is driven yet teachable.
Jonathan Noble fits the role of modern Mr. Knightley in all the best and swoony ways. He’s a hard-worker, a good son and friend, and completely adorable when he’s flustered by an unexpected newfound attraction.
I love the teachable moments, family relationships, and friends to more romance. Basham takes all the best things about Jane Austen’s Emma and adds a healthy dose of southern charm on a foundation of genuine faith to create a truly challenging, entertaining, and inspiring story. I highly recommend this latest installment of the Mitchell’s Crossroads series!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and was under no obligation to post a review. The opinions expressed are my own.
This was my first book by Pepper Basham, but it definitely won’t be my last. Her book is the perfect romantic comedy. I found myself laughing out loud and all but swooning over Jon and Liam. I loved that this was a modern day retelling of Emma. This book is so good!
I was given a complimentary copy of this ebook from the author, but was not required to write a review. The thoughts and comments are my own.
The author's rendition of friendship to romance was perfect in this novel with sprinkles of the classic "Emma" story throughout. I loved the unique characters, and how you got to see some hints of previous characters as well.
I’m starting out this review by saying that I love everything about this book. I love the contemporary setting of the story. I loved the hometown characters; the beautiful small town setting in the Blue Ridge mountains: the dialogue that flows easily; and the discussions of faith that are scattered through the storyline. But most of all, I loved Pepper Basham’s characterization of Emma.
I’ve been a Jane Austen fan for many years. “Emma” is one of my favorite books ever, and I reread it at least once a year. So when it comes to “fan fiction” books that attempt to retell the story of “Emma”, I’m very picky about every detail in those books. This is my favorite retelling of ‘Emma” to date because the author truly understood the character of Emma. Emma has always been a character who is truly compassionate; loves her family deeply; tries to help those in need; and wants the best for her friends. She’s also somewhat unknowingly proud and self-absorbed, so she misses cues around her that her plans may not be working. And so it is with this Emma who lives in this small southern town. The characters of Jon and Emma work well together to and the romance between them blossoms as it should all the way through the book. The last chapter has a romantic scene that’s sweet and perfect. (I’m not giving anything away here. You’ll have to read it for yourself.)
I loved this quote from Emma’s mom when she’s comforting Emma:
“....There’s no mistake you can make that God can’t work out for your good and His ultimate glory. There’s no brokenness too big for his love. He works with the pieces, even the jagged and chipped ones, to make a beautiful picture of our lives, even if we can’t see it at first.”
That quote is truly the heart of this book. Even if you’ve never read any of Jane Austen’s books, you’ll love the this heart-touching and romantic story of love, forgiveness, and redemption.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
I’ve held off on writing this review for a couple of days in an attempt to tone down the gushing but fair warning, there will still be plenty of that happening!
It’s no secret that I am an avid fan of the friends-to-more trope. There’s just something about two people knowing each other so well and that blossoming into a love that becomes a natural progression. Add in some of that Pepper Basham humor and, of course, chemistry and then spice it up with some references to Jane Austen’s Emma, and this book is an automatic favorite for me.
I adored Jon and his guy-next-door personality and looks (probably because my celebrity crush leans toward the Matt Damon/Rob Lowe good guy appearances over the muscles and superheroes). He’s grounded when Emma lives with her head in the clouds. Emma’s natural joy bubbles out of her an onto those she loves from her smiles, her jokes, and her food.
Yet, personally, my favorite part of this book wasn’t the actual romance between Jon and Emma (but it is at the top of my list of favorite things about the book). No, what I appreciated most about A Match for Emma is that Basham gave these characters flaws and allows the other to acknowledge and correct what they find lacking or misguided in the other. These two have learned to encourage each other, laugh together, and do life in general with the other by their side.
And let’s just talk about how perfect the epilogue in this book is. Go ahead, I’ll wait for you to pick up your copy and read it so you can agree with me. 😊

I want to play scrabble - everyday. And I want to visit Ransom, and I want to pretend I'm not from NY so that I can impress someone with my fancy NY accent. That aside - and you'll understand these things when you read the book - this just might be my favorite friends to romance story! It is so sweet, charming, and just knock-your-socks-off good.
Here's the thing - Basham is the queen of romance and kissing scenes. She just is. She builds up the exact amount of tension for both the characters and the reader, until BAM! There's a kiss that totally sweeps you off your feet and has you reaching for your hubby. Or continue reading ;) But seriously, I adore Basham's writing style and ability to draw you in - hook, line and sinker. One scrabble letter at a time.
What surprised me about this was how much I liked the non-hero, Liam. I was actually torn about what I wanted Emma to do. Okay, it's probably pretty obvious for most readers, but Liam's got something. A future story perhaps? Wink, wink, nod, nod. Kudos to Basham for making me like a secondary character, for a fleeting moment better than the leading character (although it didn't last long).
Emma and Jon are wonderfully written. Basham weaves in faith, forgiveness, romance, and fun all into one amazingly written novel. It's always a treat to visit Ransom, and this story leaves me wanting more. And for the record - this story happens to have my favorite ending/epilogue EVER! Once you read it, you'll understand why. Highly recommend you read this, along with the other Mitchell's Crossroads series as soon as possible. You won't regret it.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
'Eye candy and heart candy were two different things. One sweetened the moment, the other sweetened forever.'
In ‘A Match for Emma,’ Pepper Basham skillfully weaves together elements of faith and romance in this tale of how would-be match maker Emma Mitchell and her life-long BFF Jonathan Noble journey from being best friends to something more.
The elements of faith run deep in this story, with Jon and Emma’s courtship illustrating the many facets of Christ’s relationship with His bride the church. It shows how sometimes that relationship is us walking with Him in the cool of the garden – or in the case of Jon and Emma a movie night or game of scrabble.
However, it also explores the less comfortable parts of our walk, the parts that require us to deal honestly with one another’s flaws in ways that may bring conviction that ultimately leads to glorious restoration.
I’d give this God-honoring, swoon-worthy romance 4.5 stars.
Note: I voluntary reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All thoughts expressed are my own.
What a wonderful novel! Pepper Basham is one of my favorite authors and her amazing writing talent is showcased in this lovely book! Friends to more is one of my favorite tropes, and the author featured it beautifully in this story, I love love LOVED IT! Jon was such a fabulous hero, sweet and selfless and entirely swoon-worthy! I could definitely relate to Emma, I loved her character growth throughout the story, it touched my heart and served as a reminder of Whose I am and that He will always love me no matter how many mistakes I make! This was my first time meeting the Mitchell family and I absolutely adored them, especially Trigg, can't wait for his story! A Match for Emma is a wonderful story that I so enjoyed! I highly recommend it! I have the first two books of the series in audio and I'm so looking forward to making a return visit to Ransom very soon!
I received an ebook copy of this book from the publisher which did not influence my review in any way. All thoughts and opinions are one hundred percent my own.
If I'm absent on the blog, it's because I moved to the Blue Ridge Mountains. What a delightful read! The setting was perfect and the characters were so real in all aspects. They had their ups and downs but always came out stronger in the end. This troupe of friends-to-more was played perfectly without seeming over-the-top. Although this is the third book of the series, it can be read as a standalone with only minimal spoilers from the previous books. This is one of the first books I have read by Pepper Basham and I know that I'll be coming back for more. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a sweet story full of grace and redemption.

*I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
Pepper Basham continues her reign as the queen of romantic comedies and heartfelt romances. What I wouldn’t give for the entire Mitchell's Crossroads series to be made into movies or better yet, a TV series. This third novel in the series returns us to the Mitchell family while focusing on the youngest daughter of the bunch, Emma. And although it’s based off of Jane Austen’s novel, the Blue Ridge Mountain setting and cast of colorful characters, brings a fresh spin and true appeal. If there were such a thing as feeling a hug from a book, it’s in these pages.
*Happy sigh*. It was the sound of bliss and joy when I finished reading this delightful story. Like being wrapped in a warm hug from a dear friend, A Match for Emma perfectly encapsulates the warmth of southern hospitality while packing spiritual truth and entertainment value into this fun and relaxing story.
A Match for Emma hit my nightstand at just the right time. A perfect escape from life's stressors, Emma's and Jon's chemistry and friendship on the page became my quick escape and a pleasurable place to land. A friends to romance trope, I personally loved the time spent on showing their friendship and the love they already shared before realizing they were "in love". (And can I just say that first kiss? Woozers!)
Well written, delightful, entertaining and packing a spiritual punch (without being preachy, in my personal opinion) I found this novel absolutely delightful.
A Match for Emma is the quintessential contemporary romance with a little Austen, a little Appalachia, and a whole lot of heart. I loved returning to Ransom and the Mitchell clan's territory for Emma's story. With subtle nods and influence from Jane Austen's classic Emma, Pepper Basham weaves a deeper tale of friendship, trust, romance, grace, and even touches on grief and pride through the stories of Jon and Emma.
The slow-growing romance has the right amount of tension for the reader to be fully engaged until the promised happily-ever-after! If sweet friends-to-romance is your favorite story trope, you will love Jon and Emma’s journey. In my opinion, the pacing of the romance and beginnings of attraction is portrayed in the “Goldilocks” just right way. Emma and Jon’s dynamic friendship is what MAKES this story fantastic. Emma knows just how to break through his armor, and he knows just when to “speak truth” (if not always how) to help her be a better person. I appreciate the way Pepper Basham draws on the power of dreams and incorporates it into this story to emphasize that dreams are worth chasing.
Retellings are often fun and insightful, but A Match for Emma draws out even deeper parts of the classic characters and sends them on a unique journey all their own. For instance, grief is an unexpected theme; one that is articulated and experienced by Jon in real-life ways. And, Emma’s own struggle with pride and surrender adds layers to her personality. Spiritual themes are incorporated through Emma’s growth especially, allowing her to recognize mistakes and see how God uses all of the pieces of our lives to make a beautiful picture. The supporting characters, both family and friends (ahem Mama Mitchell!) also offer discernment, insight, and wise counsel to Jon and Emma’s lives.
I’m a big fan of Pepper’s stories from the beginning but there is just something special about the Mitchells that hits home for me and is the most relatable. With plenty of good cooking, cupcakes, Scrabble games to root for, Narnia the talking cat, and a Thor look-alike, this novel has enough humor and heart to keep me grinning for a while. I'm already ready for the next Mitchell's Crossroads story!
Thanks to the author for the advanced review copy. This is my honest review.
“The Hallmark-ish aura of Ransom” may just be rubbing off on these two best friends. When Jon Noble comes home after being gone 3 years and reunites with Emma Mitchell, both of their lives are about to change forever. Can two friends become kissing friends? After all, those hugs are like coming home…
If you want to read about the perfect hug and all the hometown feels, this book is for you. Pepper Basham’s love of family will wrap around your heart and have you yearning for family and/or wanting to be adopted by the Mitchell family. Truly inspiring family and a small town Appalachia setting with a view of the Blue Ridge Mountains that will steal your breath away. The sense of community is at times hilarious, frustrating, and yet so filled with acceptance and love. The Mitchell family’s love for God is deep and and real . Her interwoven faith in Jon and Emma’s lives is so beautiful and real it will zing your heart. Jon’s struggle with grief and running away versus working through it spoke to my core of grief. Mama Mitchell will draw you home with her home cooking and love of family.
“You have to recognize who you are to God Before you’ll be really ready to share your heart well with another person.”
The thing I love about A Match For Emma is how she deals with those prideful and arrogant areas in our hearts as Christians, how we overlook those areas and take our faith for granted. She has a wonderful way of bringing out sins and helping the reader see how beautifully God can orchestrate healing from the midst of that sin. Truly inspiring, beautifully romantic… It’s like a warm hug with a certain someone on a sunny afternoon out on a porch swing.
If you want a beautiful coming home story, this is it. Family, community, faith and romance… Along with a strong desire for hometown cooking. Ohhhh, and the hugs…how those hugs will have you swooning over this best friend romance. If you want to know what a truly beautiful hug, and possibly kissing, and even more possibly one of Basham’s famous closet moment’s is like, then A Match for Emma is for you.
“The only person who can give you what you need most is the one who can love you forever and always.”
I bought my own copy, but was also given and ARC by the publisher and JustRead Tours. All opinions are my own.
A MATCH FOR EMMA is a fun and sweet retelling of Jane Austen's Emma. Readers will fall in love with this small town, the close family relationships and friendships, and especially with these charming characters. Recommended to fans of Christian contemporary romance.
Oh my goodness! I loved falling into this story! Emma and Jon were so adorable, especially with all their teasing, ribbing, and close friendship. I also loved how close their families were, as well as the charm of Daphne's cafe and the town. I could feel the love between these characters. I loved Liam and how he mixed things up a little for Emma and Jon. When the chemistry starts ramping up, I could feel that too. The author obviously is talented at conveying emotions and in writing complex characters, which I benefited from in this story. I think I pretty much just smiled nonstop through most of this. There were also some moments of heartbreak, as well as a few things these characters needed to work through that helped in making the story not too sweet. Then the ending... so perfect.
I had a few minor issues with the story. As I haven't read previous books in the series, I was a little lost in figuring out who some of the characters were, so a little more background there would have been helpful. It didn't quite work for me how easily the thief was able to steal without actually breaking in. I'm not sure I really liked the whole subplot with the thief honestly. I also don't like it when stories go overly dramatic into feeling unrealistic and there were a few moments here, particularly with Molly. The other thing was when things were just tied up too perfectly with all the conflicts in the story, and when forgiveness and belief in God occurred almost instantly. I LOVED the ending and how things worked out for Emma, but it was the other subplots that felt too forced.
In the end, was it what I wished for? I really enjoyed reading this one and would love to go back and read the previous two books in the series. The characters were just wonderful. Add in small-town charm, a sweet romance, and a girl who rediscovers who she is to God, and you have an overall winning story!
Content: Clean Source: I received a complimentary copy from through JustRead Publicity Tours, which did not require a positive review. All opinions are my own.
I throughly enjoyed this story so much! It was great to visit the Mitchell family once again in the Blue Ridge Mountains. I’ve read several of the author’s books but these are my favorites. Being from the Deep South myself, I get a chuckle from some of the wonderful sayings and phrases used by the author to portray the mountain people in such a fun and loving way. Emma, the youngest Mitchell, is saving as much money as she can to afford a trip to Europe to culinary school. All is going well until money starts disappearing from the restaurant where she works for her aunt. Then her apartment is broken into and her partial payment for her trip is stolen. All her dreams of school and opening her own restaurant have flown out the window. Jon, the boy next door and best friend to Emma, has been away for three years trying to get his counseling clinic off the ground. He returns home to help his dad recover from health issues that have waylaid him for a spell. His friendship with Emma seems to have picked up right where they left off three years ago. She does lots of cooking for him and his dad, which kept my mouth watering and my stomach growling. I even tried to look up recipes for some of her concoctions (peanut butter fudge cookies for one!). This story talked of dreams and hopes for the future. But it also brought out seeking your own way at times instead of listening to God. Pride, selfishness and not thinking before you speak, taking you where you don’t need to go. I loved the faith element woven into the books pages as well. It had me in tears at times right along with the characters. Emma and Jon were so real to me that I knew we’d be friends if we were to meet. A great story, time for me well spent, and a tug at the old heart strings. I received a complimentary ebook by the author but was not required to write a review positive or otherwise. All opinions are my own.
Inspired by Jane Austen’s Emma, A Match for Emma is hands down my favorite Pepper Basham novel to date. I always enjoy a good friends-to-lovers story, but a gorgeously crafted one enchants the palate like Emma’s Mitchellbery Crumble delights the taste buds.
Authors who craft an Emma Woodhouse-like character walk a tightrope. Creating a heroine that does just about everything wrong, albeit for misguided reasons, and doesn’t come across as stupid or unsympathetic requires major balance. Basham rises to the challenge beautifully.
I adored Emma, and despite our vastly different personalities, I could easily envision us as friends in real life. As for Jon Noble (excuse me as I don’t even try to hide my happy sigh), he would make Mr. Knightley proud. The banter between the hero and heroine flowed flawlessly. From the get-go, I became invested in them as individuals and as a couple. The rest of the cast is squared off by the quirky, loveable ensemble that readers have come to expect from this author.
My one complaint came toward the end of the story. Something happened — at no fault of Emma’s — and she blamed herself. Relatable and realistic because who hasn’t done this at some point? The problem came when she went on to have the exact same self-blame conversation with multiple characters. At best, her repeated meltdowns felt like someone being overdramatic, or at worst, someone seeking attention and pats on the back. Neither jibed with the Emma we had grown to know and love.
I thoroughly enjoyed book three in the Mitchell’s Crossroads series and recommend it to readers searching for a Jane Austen romance with an Appalachian twist.
Something about helping one person find a ‘home’ in the heart of another person brought a sense of rightness.
A Match for Emma is my favorite Basham novel so far. Anyone who has read this authors works knows the level of talent within the pages. Incredible can’t even come close to describing it. All the characters jump off the page in this continuing saga, drawing the reader in with snappy dialogue, sharp wit, and love. Lots of love.
Being a contemporary take on Jane Austen’s classic Emma, our Emma, bless her heart, is sure she knows better than anyone else who needs to be matched up with each other for a blissful life together. There are twists and turns and ups and downs that bring about lots of laughter but what stood out most to me is when Emma has a revelation about herself that deeply impacts her faith. It was an eloquently depicted moment of truth. My heart felt like a wet cloth being wrung out with the amount of tears I shed during that scene.
I’ll briefly mention that if Mr. Knightley is a favorite Austen hero, you’re going to triple adore Jon Noble. Seriously. ♥ Triple ♥ Adore. ♥
There are no characters in this story that I didn’t like. I wish they were actually real people I could hang out with. One person in particular stepped onto the scene and just blew me away with his depth and witty personality. He is, and I quote, ‘Smooth as melted chocolate. Have mercy!’ (location 2457)
I highly recommend this third sojourn to Mitchell’s Crossroads. I was provided a digital copy of the book by the author. No review was required. No compensation received.
Oh how I have longed to go back to Mitchell's Crossroads! This family just invites you in to sit at the table and talk a spell. I will admit that going into this story, I didn't anticipate connecting as much as I did with Emma (that doesn't mean I didn't think I would enjoy it, because I knew I would!). Honestly, it was about a week after I initially read the story that it became clear just how much I actually needed her story (and reading it through a second time drove that home even further). Emma's growth from the beginning to the end is huge and the lessons she learns wound up reaching into my own life in unexpected ways. I love when that happens! How amazing is it that Jon speaks truth into Emma's life even when it is difficult to do so, knowing it might hurt her in some ways? But he loves her enough to speak that truth anyway because he wants her to grow. And while I have made it clear to those around me that I adore Liam in this story, I absolutely routed for Jon the entire time as far as Emma was concerned. As always, I laughed out loud at the humor Pepper infuses in this story. Grace and love abound in this story and it will leave you with all the feels! I may even admit to tears during a scene or two!
If you have enjoyed Emma by Jane Austen, I've no doubt you will adore Pepper's Emma.
'She's Emma. She just moved her fairy tales and dolls to real people. God help us.'
Pepper Basham gives us book 3 in her Mitchell's Crossroads series and we now get Emma's story. Sweet, helpful, lovable, matchmaking Emma. Emma also has a dream to go to culinary school in Europe and she has her travel plans made and two thirds of her money already paid. She can't wait. Then Jon Noble comes back to Ransom with his dad. Jon, who has been Emma's best friend since she was a small girl. But Jon doesn't seem much like a friend anymore. Is it possible there is more there? Watch now as this wonderful couple discover that sometimes friendship does indeed lead to love.
Pepper Basham is a master at romance. Seriously. The woman knows how to do it. She builds it up and involves the heart like no one else. My heart smiled reading this book. Her swoon worthy heroes are just so wonderful, too! And, there is a very important spiritual lesson to be learned here, one all believers would do well to examine. I was ministered to during the reading of this book. I declare, I loved it so much! I'd love to visit this fictional town. I truly would. I highly recommend this book.
*My thanks to the author and publisher for a preview copy of this book. The opinions expressed here are entirely my own.
I have enjoyed Pepper Basham's books in the past, but I found a new level of enjoyment with A Match for Emma! The main reason is this: of all the Austen heroes, Mr. Knightley is by far my favorite, and Jonathan Noble makes for an excellent Knightley!
A Match for Emma is romantic, amusing, and heart-rending. I love a good friends-to-more romance, and A Match for Emma does the trope well. Emma and Jon have chemistry in spades, and I loved their gradual awakening to their feelings for each other.
I'm not a huge fan of Austen's Emma (the character), and the things that bug me about her also bugged me about this Emma. But that's certainly not an indictment of Basham or her writing; I just don't always enjoy Emma (no matter the adaptation I'm reading or watching). In the same way, I loved Jon, just as I always love Knightley. Basham's Jon is probably my second favorite Knightley, after Jonny Lee Miller's Knightley in the 2009 BBC adaptation.
So, the bottom line: Even when I wasn't loving Emma herself, I was loving this book! I stayed up far too late in order to finish it, and I keep thinking about it. Readers who enjoy Austen adaptations will find much to love in this novel—I know I did!
Disclosure: I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, which I received from the author. All views expressed are my honest opinion.
