I first met Nick Bancroft in Bob Liter's first book of the Nick Bancroft Mysteries series titled Murder by the Book. August is Murder is the second book in the Nick Bancroft Mysteries and can be read as a stand alone book. However, I really enjoyed Murder by the Book and I recommend reading it. In the opening of August is Murder we learn that someone is trying to kill Nick, who is both a private investigator and investigative reporter, by burning down the building he lives and works in. Could this have something to do with the elusive Kathleen who has tried to hire him for protection because she has received death threats? Faced with having to relocate, he reconnects with Maggie and their on and off relationship resumes for now. When Nick decides to investigate the threats Kathleen says she received two murders occur and his own life is threatened. Will he survive this case? There is much that makes this a highly readable story. The one constant in Nick's life is his friend Otto and his sometimes affectionate and nameless cat. Both add warmth to the story. Well plotted, fast moving and engrossing, August is Murder is well worth reading. Highly recommended.
This is my kind of P.I. In fact Nick Bancroft is almost a “black noir” kind of guy. Yet somehow Bob Liter has made him have that patina and yet still placed him in a modern-day story. It all rolls into a good blend for a good story. It’s an easy quick read with some quirky characters everyone will no doubt enjoy.
I will say this about its genre classification. I don’t think it’s really a romance. I think it’s a mystery. There is some mention of nudity and a joke or two. There’s even some talk from Nick’s POV about going to bed with somebody. However, there is nothing steamy and nothing embarrassing about it. This in my opinion made it an even better story. We all have our own things. Romance is just not one of my favorite genres.
There are 5 books in this great series titled “Nick Bancroft Mysteries”. Hope he keeps writing more.
I got interested in the Bancroft Mysteries when I found his first book. I immediately got his second book; August is Murder by Bob Liter. It is one of those books that you don't want to put it down until you have read it all. You always knew Nick was going to get into trouble but never knew what. He was always trying to help the good guy and stop the bad guys. Get his first book to start and you will understand what I mean. The first book is Murder by the Book.
I found Nick Bancroft to be quite an interesting character. He had a way of getting into trouble without too much effort, but he still was able to survive through all the danger and violence while working on the case. I enjoyed this story as he worked his way to a solution, and I recommend this book.
I received a copy of this story through Goddess Fish Promotions, and this is my unsolicited review.
