Resurrection Quest #1

Greenways Goblins

Rate this book
Gamers everywhere share a hidden desire deep in their hearts— that their mundane, humdrum world be replaced by the ones they play in. When freakish storms envelope the Earth, people start disappearing without a trace. Wild theories abound; is it aliens, spontaneous combustion, or perhaps quantum entanglement? The only ones who might know are those who have vanished.
An average group of gamers is setting up to start a new campaign. The storms rage across the world, but they only care about the game they are about to start. Little do they know that they would be next to disappear from the face of the Earth.

Shifted to a different world, the group of friends find that the gamer’s dream they had always harbored has come true, but not in the way they would have hoped. They are not there as themselves, but as the level one characters they had been preparing to play. Standing on a road with smoke rising in the distance, they would soon be given their first quest— but not the one they would have chosen.

(This series contains dark themes, including but not limited to: suicide, torture, slavery, and worse.)

I'm a bit biased, but I really enjoyed writing this book. It's non-harem, and isn't likely to see romance, and even if it does it'll be FtB, but has none in the first book. The writing though touches on subjects that are hard for some, murder, suicide, torture, and more.

When I saw that Daniel Schinhofen finally wrote a book without harems and sex, I was excited. I previously read the first couple books of Alpha World and mostly liked it, but felt like there were too many sex and petting scenes. The story was good enough to keep me for a while, but eventually I stopped when I saw that the book's priorities weren't in line with mine as a reader. So heading into this book, I was excited to see how it would go. It ended up being a bit of a mixed bag for me, but nothing that couldn't self-correct in later books.

There were really only two things that hindered me. The first became apparent immediately and that was the characters. Right off the bat we're introduced to 8 characters and I struggled to tell them apart. The issue wasn't helped by the fact that three of them were actually named Tom, Dick, and Harry, which is the equivalent of a placeholder for a person rather than being an actual person. Unfortunately, this would be the case for these characters for quite some time until Tom started to show a bit of personality.

As the story went on, various characteristics were used to superficially tell the characters apart, but I never felt any connection to them. Apart from Tom, it seemed like any bit of dialogue from one of the others could have just have easily come out of anyone else's mouth. Ironically, the second most interesting character in the story for me was an 'NPC' type character who was a retired adventurer.

The other aspect of the characters that made them a bit boring to me was that they pretty much all only wanted the same thing: survival. Important, but also not helping to separate the characters from each other. That's probably what made Tom and Charlie stand out a bit more to me was that they demonstrated a desire for something other than just wanting to live rather than die.

The inability to connect much with the characters probably intensified the second problem I had later on in the book: the final leg of the characters' quest felt like a slog.

I don't want to sound too down on this book because I did still like many things about it. Specifically, I feel like the majority of Gamelit out there is following the MMO route and taking its inspiration from World of Warcraft and such, so it is always refreshing to me when a story has its roots in Dungeons and Dragons. Personally, I think that Hugo Huesca and Drew Hayes are standing at the top of DnD gamelit stories at the moment and I also really enjoyed the Caverns & Creatures stories though the 'comedy' got a bit too irksome after awhile.

I felt that Daniel Schinhofen really nailed the D&D aspect of the story in the way that most others struggle, and that is with the combat specifically. While I would love it if the 'slip' spell was less of a crutch used in this story, that's a minor nit to pick and something that could easily change in the next book. While I mentioned that the last bit of the story dragged for me, the way the combat unfolded did a great job of balancing a D&D feel mechanically while showing an entertaining scene for reading. A lot of other D&D stories gloss over the combat a bit.

I also really liked how the healing worked (and didn't) in this story. The way that this story's world works relative to other game worlds is one of the most interesting aspects of this book for me.

Despite my middle-of-the-road score, I would still recommend this book. There are some unique elements that your average litrpg/gamelit reader will appreciate. While some Schinhofen fans might lament the absence of harems/romance elements, there are many like myself who have been waiting for such a book. I can only hope that this book does well and encourages Mr. Schinhofen to continue the series.

This was a pretty good book. The only thing I didn't really like was Kattie, but she gets what she deserves in the end. This is setting up to be one of those more realistic type of DnD books. The first scene sets the tempo for the rest of the story pretty damn quick.

Standard plot, people got pulled into a DnD world only thing is that it's not set up to be nice. There's no overly used cliches as of yet (slavery, rape, etc) however there is a twist in this. Healing magic does NOT exist, however, you need to go all in in order to advance levels. Also, leveling is not set to your class/race. Which means that what you do while leveling affects what you can level to. So this ALSO means that after you level, your path can also change if you start doing things outside your class.... E.G. Mage's generally have to use a staff in order to cast magic, however if you find yourself constantly using a sword on top of trying to cast magic, you can possibly be able to cast magic from your sword. This SOUNDS cool, but remember that mage's in DnD tend to have about the same amount of health as a newborn. So you're pretty much a piece of paper until you level and do remember that you have to overcome a HUGE ordeal in order to level.

The characters bicker with each other, however they are able to work well because of the history they have with each other. It's a dysfunctional but lovable group (with that one...no two aholes.)

I'm not going to ruin the story, but it's the run of the mill, go kill goblins........but these goblins aren't goblin slayer goblins.......AND if they way they act is any type of foreshadowing for future races, I'm wondering how certain people are going to act when it's not trash mobs they are fighting, but other "adventurers" who have reasons for doing what they are doing.

Unlike any other Daniel Schinhofen book
I'm conflicted about Greenways Goblins because I didn't like it, but I feel like I asked for this book in my head.
Mr. Schinhofen has written 3 series that I love: Alpha World, Apocalypse Gates, and Binding Words. They all start with a single male protagonist from earth and he becomes the center of a larger community or family in a fantasy (game) world where he has extraordinary power. Also lets not forget there is a lot of sex, usually a harem of lusty women. One of the standouts of a Schinhofen story is the care these characters have for each other. It can be quite sentimental for a violent fantasy harem game-lit book. This one is different.
In Greenways Goblins we start with eight characters who are transported to game world. That's similar enough just with eight instead of one. The striking difference, What is more glaring than the total lack of sex scenes is that these characters don't all like each other, and some of the characters who say they like each other don't treat each other with anything like respect. They are often complete A-holes to each other.
This book wasn't that much fun for me, It was much worse for the characters from earth. The characters get tired, and scared, and hungry. When they get hurt they are in pain. There is a lot of pain and fear in this book. There are two scenes involving torture. People die.
Now the funny thing is, as I've read all the previous RPGlit books I've been critiquing them in my head. Thinking, " this would actually happen another way" and "No, he'd be freaking out if that actually happened". It's like Daniel Schinhofen was taking notes on all the thought I'd had and made a book based on those notes and now that I have it, I don't much like it.
Fantasy role playing is great fun, but the fantasy worlds are not. They are bloody and brutal. Living there IRL would be a nightmare unless you are a total psychopath and than it would still be physically uncomfortable (little soap, no toilet paper).
So Damn, I did not like it, but I practically custom ordered it in my head so I feel churlish for not liking it. I guess be careful what you wish for.

Of Note: I do like that Daniel Schinhofen is branching out and adding non-harem books to his repertoire. I don't want him to quit writing those, He's very good at it, But it's nice to see him grow as a writer and try more and new things. So let me say that what made me luke-warm to this book is not the lack of bedroom antics. Thank god this book has no sex scenes in it.

Note: I listened to an audiobook that isn't currently listed on Goodreads.com so I am placing my review here.

This is a pretty good book, probably 3.5 stars is an acurate rating but it was sufficiently enjoyable for me to round up. Personally I appreciate it when the MCs are not required to save the world, so failure and death is an option. However, when death comes it is then turned into the driving theme for the series- the surviving MCs will find a way to resurrect the fallen. As a result the deaths that happened felt contrived. I admit that is a subjective take on the writing and so other readers will feel differently.

The story is straightforward, which I prefer to stories that require the reader to take note just to keep track of who is stabbing who in the back. Unfortunately it was so straightforward that nothing surprising actually takes place. Still I was able to enjoy this book, largely due to its above average character development.

Bottom line: If you enjoy character driven LitRPG you should enjoy this.

Book one

Mistakes: I found one. We was used when it should have been they to stay with the flow and style of the story.
Plot: A group of friends gather for game night and are suddenly in another world as their characters. After the loss of a friend they decided to adventure to rise in power and wealth in order to bring back the dead friend.
Characters: While I found some of the conversations a bit of a drag, I loved the large diverse group and how they each handle the situation.
8/10 Look forward to book two.

Not the authors best work

Pros: Story had a good flow between the action. Good mix of Characters. I liked that two of them were rotten.

Cons:

Story did not feel like it had any depth. The reason why they were transported felt weak. And the characters seemed flat.

I've read most of this authors work and he has some great stories. Was somewhat disappointed in this one.

I'm giving this author another try after his Binding Words series is working out so far. i hope he doesn't disappoint.

It hasn't even been a chapter and I'm already disliking this. The pop culture references and memes already made me sour to it.

Maybe I didn't think this through. It looks like it is going to be a group thing, and from everyone's personality I saw so far, thy will be throwing banter around endlessly.

If I finish this I think it will be getting a two stars or less rating, we will see.

So..

The names "Tom, Dick, and Harry"... this author wrote this entire book as a joke. I don't find it funny or entertaining, but it doesn't change it from being a joke book.

I expected the main protagonist to be reincarnated as a goblin, and he had to do whatever to survive.
Maybe I messed up and picked the wrong book.

I finished the book and have no intention of continuing the series. There was a part near the end that I liked, but it wasn't enough for me to go on with the next book.

There were no stats in this book, but that is because instead of being transported and trapped in a virtual game world, they were transported and trapped in a paper table top game world.

I wanted to drop this book multiple times, and start something new, but I finished it. I think I will only stick to the author's Binding Words series until he gives me a reason not to.

Awesome read

Looks weird players of role-playing games slash tabletop games end up going into a world of becoming their characters always fascinates me. This one went above and beyond. I'm seriously hoping it'll be another one following this soon. I am definitely a huge fan of this writer.

A fun start to what has the potential to be a really good series. Not very number crunchy, but leveling still matters, just different than a typical LitRPG. 👍🏽👍🏽

Alert

I hate trying to write reviews because there are really only pass/fail results for me. Did I make it all the way through? Yes? 5 stars. No? There would be nothing here to read. In all fairness, if an author holds my attention from page one to the end, they’ve done their job. Anything less than 5 stars is petty criticism from someone incapable of even doing the job let alone doing a better one.

So in respect for the author and their work, I am going to start pasting this along with a generic review I found somewhere. “This was a fun book. I am glad that I read it. You should try it too.”

Cheers

A wonderful new veiw from an already amazingly accomplished author

This introduction into a new world is breathtaking and hilarious as I have come to expect from Schinhofen. The characters feel human and are likable, even with their flaws, switching between the main three party members while still keeping you locked into the story.
Amazing work and I can hardly wait for the next installment

A role playing game / portal book.

I enjoyed it. Good, believable characters/plot/interactions. Written like an “old school” portal novel- from the before time when LitRPG wasn’t a thing. A gaming group falls through the dimensions into a world remarkably like the game. A low powered campaign so far, but very well developed characters and story. I’ll read the next one when it comes out.

Another promising series

Resurrection Quest is a great start to a new series. Based loosely around table top gaming the mechanics of the world are fun and fresh. The banter between the three main characters was vibrant and funny, and with the authors penchant for character development in his series in excited to see how they'll turn out. 5/5 goblins, would kill again.

Great start

Very promising story. The characters' reactions to the new world feel real to me. The struggle to figure it all out keeps it interesting. The premise solves the gamer vs npc issue nicely. And the natives are a great part of the story.

I am looking forward to the next book.

Great story

This series is different from what Daniel has done before and I'm liking it. A larger cast of characters, but still the character and world building that I love. I'm really looking forward to seeing how he develops the series and the cast, he's setting it up to go any number of ways, and I love it.

Lots of main characters

A lot of main characters in and of itself does not distract me, but I'm not a gamer so I found it difficult to get into this because of the detailed description of each character. Once past that, the adventure flowed mostly well, with just a few jumps and rushes.

A promising start for a new series

This is a solid book much in the vein of the guardian of the flames by Joel Rosenberg. The characters are flawed but believable. No Mary Sue here. Very much worth your time. I am looking forward for more.

Nailed it.

I loved the interactions between the main characters. It really rang of most groups of friends that i have been a part of. Some who give each other endless shit, the girl everybody hates except their boyfriend. Truly spot on.

A different, grittier spin on being pulled into a game world

I enjoyed the book. Bad things happen to the players and it helps it feel more real. There are a lot of characters introduced quickly, so following them can be challenging at first.
