TAMING MY CHRISTMAS RAKE
Tammy Andresen

BLURB : Miss Danielle Frazier is far too virtuous for his tastes… so why can’t he stop thinking about her? He must take drastic measures. His plan? Steal one kiss. Except for from the moment their lips touch, nothing goes the way it’s supposed to and kisses under the mistletoe rarely end romantic fantasy. Now Drew has a new problem entirely… for the first time in his life, he might be falling in love.

MY REVIEW : When two peoples are unwillingly drawn to one another, must they follow their desire or stay far away from each other...

I love Mrs Tammy Andresen writing for her ability even with short story to give depth and temper to her characters.
Drew is so determined to never marry just to spike his father, he is unable to recognize the signs of his infatuation for what they are. Danielle is filling every pores of his skin even when away, she haunts his dreams and fantasies. Why he wants to shake her up from his system thinking a mere kiss will cure him like a medicine against an illness.
Danielle has so worked to be unobtrusive to those who gave her a roof, she has become shy around other. Still for whatever reason, she is more at ease when with Drew than any other man, yet he fires her blood and scares her she might do something stupid instead of running away the other way because of his roguish attractiveness.
This was a lovely fast paced Christmas tale.
5 stars

I was granted an advance copy by the author, and preordered my own.
Here is my true and unbiased opinion.

HIS LADY SMUGGLER
Tamara Gill

BLURB : May Stanford, lady smuggler is forced to go up against the Earl of Grandison, her father’s guest for Christmas and a man who’s determined to see her and her merry bandits brought to justice.

MY REVIEW : When a young lady reading to give up her life’s expectations for the sake of her family meets a man who makes her rethinking her choice...

I won’t lie, I love Mrs Tamara Gill’s way with words. And here, with this short story, she does not disappoint.
She brings together two very stubborn characters, both acting from one side of the law, thus a near impossible choosing for them.
Yet, their chemistry draws them to one another, why they ponder their every moves, and when close to find an agreement, their obduracy might tear them apart.
For a short tale, Mrs Tamara Gill has fleshed out her characters with strong traits, but also flaws as too much pride.
I loved May once she saw the wrong of her rash decision was ready to grovel if necessary as for William to not hold a grudge for too long.
4.5 stars

DEVIL AT THE GATES
Lauren Smith

BLURB : A duke with a dark past rescues a the daughter of a fencing master. What begins as a battle of wills becomes a battle of heart as Christmas works its magic.

MY REVIEW : When a runaway miss meets a frightening recluse, will they be able to heal their wounded souls...

Oh my, from the very first lines, my heart was bleeding for Redmond.
For a gothic tale, the opening of the story did set the pace, then slowly when they get to know one another, Redmond softens his attitude to appear less aloof when Harriet is willing to trust him to not hurt her.
Mrs Lauren Smith mixes all the classic components to create a trustworthy eerie tale, mysterious deaths, storms, a damsel in distress, ghosts, an hermit, an ugly villain ...
Yet, this story is not a full-dark tale, it bears a certain lightness dues to the cheerful servants, Harriet’s kindness and the sensuous moments.
In all, a good sensual read, perfect for a rainy afternoon.
4.5 stars

AN UNWELCOME PROPOSAL
Bree Wolf

BLURB : A chance encounter. An unexpected proposal. And an undeniable love.
All his life, WESLEY EVERETT has watched other men fall in love. Now, when he finally does find a woman who brings a flutter to his heart, she could not be less interested. Will Wesley take 'no' for an answer? Or will he be able to convince Christine that marriage is far from boring?

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Below are a selection of reviews for some of the stories in this collection.

Taming My Christmas Rogue
Tammy Andresen
❤️❤️❤️❤️
💋💋
A wonderful seasonal romance.
Great for a quick read with a coffee and a roaring fire.

Drew has pushed his family to its limits with his dissolute behaviour, booze , women and such have become something his father won’t tolerate from now on , little does he know that his errant son has already chosen to settle down , he’s besotted with Danielle , and she’s on his mind constantly.

As the Christmas season arrives he know he must take things in hand . His father apparently has decided on a bride for him and now Drew must act sooner rather than later . With two other suitors interested it’s time to proceed, now .

Great story , emotional, action packed and beautifully written.

Wishes in Winter
Scarlett Scott

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
💋💋
Scarlett’s books are so passionate, the writing just blows me away . This book is part of The Wicked Winter series.

Alistair is a Duke , a broke Duke admittedly ,the title and his looks can get him just about any woman he wants as a wife.
But he needs money to pay debts his father left.
There’s one woman who has that amount in a dowry she just happens to be the sister of his best friend and the woman he’s in love with .
Can he make her want him or will the bluestocking turn him down.

Lydia has always loved Alistair , from being a young woman, but the dashing Duke can and has had many women, the only thing she has is money , and she will not be wanted for just that.

Lovely story of love found and lost and found again.
Sweet in places , passionate in others , tearjerking in a couple more . But always brilliant.

Devil At The Gates
Lauren Smith

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
💋💋
Classic, gothic romance, this is a timeless story one that will get your heart pounding in anticipation in so many ways.

It’s got romance , tension and fear.
The characters are wonderful. The Devil comes in many forms it seems and it’s not always the one you expected.
The Duke . The Stepfather .The dog?

It’s such a great story , I’m not a ghost person to be honest, but these ghosts were done really well, I’m shocked at myself for finding them so enjoyable and I new if anyone could change my thinking it would be Lauren.

A wonderful and enjoyable experience for anyone who loves a good ghostly romance .
Recommended reading.

Taming my Christmas Rogue by Tammy Andresen 4 Stars
Lord Andrew Maddox is a rogue, he’s the last man Dani should want. Yet her eyes are drawn to Drew every time he enters the same room as her, which is often since she’s spending Christmastide with his family. Dani just has to avoid him for a week and then she can go back to her orderly life and her almost husband hunt. Miss Danielle Frazier is far too virtuous for his tastes… so why can’t Andrew stop thinking about her? So he decides to steal one kiss which should cure him of this growing obsession.
Once again strong characters who are very loveable, a well written well paced story that I read in a sitting. Dani is shy & prefers to be in the background, Andrew is a rogue but also a hardworking landowner, together their chemistry sizzles. I love it when a rogue falls hard & Andrew certainly did. I was drawn in from page one & engrossed until the end

His Lady Smuggler - by Tamara Gill 4 Stars
May Stanford is a lady smuggler to help fill the coffers of her father’s estate then Earl of Grandison, arrives as her father’s guest for Christmas whilst there's an immediate attraction William works for the crown tracking down smugglers.
A lovely romance with strong characters & a well paced story that I read in a sitting. William & May lock horns but can they overcome their differences!

Christmas Seduction by Samantha Holt 5 Stars
In a time when arranged marriages had little to do with love, Alexander
never expected a love match. Neither did Emma--but she had hoped for more
than being abandoned instantly! However, Alexander is back and if there is
ever a time for romance and second chances, it's Christmas.
A lovely romance of misunderstandings & misconceptions, if only they’d talked

Winter Wishes by Scarlett Scott 5 Stars
The Duke of Warwick is in need of a bride as his father gambled away most of the duchy’s money. He’s always has a soft spot for Lady Lydia Brownlow, sister of his best friend Rand. When they meet at the Winters’ house party Alistair realises that Freckles is the only woman he’ll marry but meets his match in a lady who has no intention of becoming his duchess. Lydia has loved Alistair ever since he rescued her from a pond years ago.
I loved this engrossing romance of Alistair wooing Lydia. Well written with lovely characters & once again I read it in a sitting

Devil at the Gates by Lauren Smith 5 Stars
Fleeing a cruel stepfather, Harriet Russell escapes into a stormy night, relying only on the mercy of servants to help her. Her coach overturns, leaving her and her driver injured. She stumbles between a set of gates guarded by fierce demonic gargoyle statues. As she enters the shadowy, haunted lands belonging to the Duke of Frostmore, she’s afraid of meeting with him, but she must in order to help her driver. After the tragic deaths of his wife and brother, Redmond Barrington, the Duke of Frostmore, wants to be left alone and has barred all strangers from his lands. When an injured young woman begs for help, he finds himself reconsidering his vow of solitude as Christmas draws near. Harriet is as unwilling to trust in love as he is.
The author never disappoints & once again this is an engrossing, enthralling read. Well developed characters – she doesn’t do two dimensional ever. A story that captured my interest from page one & didn’t let go until the final word

An Unwelcome Proposal by Bree Wolf 4 Stars

All his life, Wesley Everett has watched other men fall in love. Now, when he finally does find a woman who brings a flutter to his heart, Christine Dansby could not be less interested.
Another short story that I read in a sitting. Well developed characters & a story that flows effortlessly.
6 short stories that individually are riveting but together you have a brilliant box set from some of the best historical romance authors. I love all of their books & highly recommend this anthology

A Lady’s Christmas Rake contains six addictive historical romances. Anyone looking for a festive read in the genre is sure to find something enjoyable in this collect.

Within the collection, I had previously read Tammy Andresen and Scarlett Scott, with both being favourite authors in the genre. The other four – Tamara Gill, Samantha Holt, Lauren Smith, and Bree Wolf – were all on my to-read list. Thus, this was the perfect way to get more from beloved authors and to be introduced to new authors.

Taming My Christmas Rogue by Tammy Andresen was a three-star rating. It is not my favourite read from the author, but it’s a sweet quick read that holds your attention throughout. Although it is linked with one of Tammy Andresen’s series, the story works perfectly fine as a standalone.

His Lady Smuggler by Tamara Gill was another three-star rating. It is a standalone that pulls you right in, one that offers plenty to keep the reader entertained. It left me curious to see what else the author has to offer, as I powered through the story in no time.

Christmas Seduction by Samantha Holt was a four-star rating. It offered a different kind of romance to what is usually found in the genre, which had me hooked throughout. There was plenty of enjoyment to be had, with a smile planted on my face throughout.

Winter Wishes by Scarlett Scott was also a four-star rating. Although this is linked to one of the author’s series, it works perfectly fine as a standalone. It’s more of a side story, without being a direct continuation of the series. It was my favourite of the stories in this collection, giving me all the feels.

Devil at the Gates by Lauren Smith was another four-star rating. This one came close to earning the spot as my favourite in the collection. It hooked me throughout, with the story having a lot packed into it. It left me extremely eager for more of the author’s work, as I devoured this one in no time.

An Unwelcome Proposal by Bree Wolf was also a three-star rating. This story takes place within a series, but the story works perfectly fine alone. It’s an addictive read that has you curious about the rest of the series, wanting to find out more about the characters.

All in all, the six stories in this made for wonderful reading.

Tempting my Christmas rogue by Tammy Andresen
Lord Andrew Maddox was quite the rogue and had no intention of getting married, inspite of his father’s dictates. Danielle Frazier is a shy lady but has a dowry thanks to her cousin, that makes her an attractive marriage prospect. Drew is attracted to Danielle but will he want something lasting? At a house party, there are a number of would be suitors for Danielle. This was an entertaining read with an element of danger. There is also a bonus prologue for an upcoming series that sounds very interesting.
Wishes in winter by Scarlett Scott
Lady Lydia Brownlow was at the house party at the dictate of her parents who want her to find a husband. Lydia is keen on astronomy and reading educational texts. She isn’t your typical lady. Alastair, Duke of Warwick, needs to marry because of his father’s debts. They have known each other since childhood but how can she be sure that what Alastair says is true, knowing his reputation as a rogue. A number of secrets are disclosed that has an adverse affect on their relationship. This was an endearing story, with some heartfelt moments towards the end.

I have read all of the books in this box set and there is something for everyone in these novellas.

Taming my Christmas Rogue by Tammy Andresen: A delightful Regency romance, when the roguish Lord Drew meets his match. Having gained a reputation through his wild behaviour, his first meeting with Danielle leaves him dissatisfied with his life and makes him wonder whether there is more to finding a love match than he thought. Spending Christmas with his family, and Danielle gives Drew the opportunity he needs to plan his strategy. Reserved, quiet Danielle is more than frustrated with herself. She has been presented with three possible suitors at the Maddox Christmas party and the only one that she feels anything for is the less than suitable Lord Andrew. This novella in lighthearted, witty and romantic, It is also well written and keeps the reader entertained throughout.

His Lady Smuggler by Tamara Gill: Set in Cornwall, Willliam, Earl of Grandison has a mission. It really was rather simple, until he encountered May and found his plans in disarray. The lone visitor on her stretch of coast upends May's intention to enter a convent, making her rethink her purpose in life. This romance has all the push and pull of attraction between two strong-minded people, and although it may appear that they will not overcome their differences, the story does come to a happy close.

Christmas Seduction by Samantha Holt: Misunderstandings abound in this Scottish Christmas romance, as Alexander, Duke Of Wyndbourne and his wife Emma struggle to find each other through a maze of difficulties. Thinking his wife had been unfaithful to him, Alexander takes off to the Alps instead of dealing with the problems at home. On his return, he finds his household disintegrating before his eyes, and yet the young couple still skirt around their problems. Constant interruptions make reconciliation next to impossible, but when Alex and Emma eventually do talk, they discover that together they can tackle anything. The story is sweet and one can only feel sad that they wasted so much time not discussing their problems.

Wishes in Winter by Scarlett Scott: Lydia Brownlow is a blight against her family name, not for indecent behaviour, but because she is a bluestocking and prefers astronomy and mathematics to dances, pretty dresses and flirting at balls. She has known Alastair, the Duke of Warwick since she was a little girl and he irreverently calls her "Freckles". However, she also knows that he would never look at her in the same way as he views her daintier and more graceful counterparts. Thus, when Alastair makes his intentions towards Lydia known she is suspicious, to say the least. Knowing he has to marry if his estate is to survive, Alastair comes to the conclusion that if marriage is the only way out for him, there is only one woman he could bear to marry, namely Lydia. She is intelligent, strong-willed and independent. She would always be his match in every way. Eventually winning her over, Alastair doesn't take into account her brother's accusations and disclosure of his situation. Lydia's trust is broken and it takes all of Alastair's courage to win her back again. The story is heartfelt and romantic, making one side with Alastair and trusting that he will redeem himself.

Devil at the Gates by Lauren Smith: With a terrible threat hanging over her head, Harriet Russell escapes her step-father's house even whilst her mother is on her deathbed. When the carriage she is traveling in has an accident, Harriet is forced to go to the dreaded home of Redmond Barrington, the Duke of Frostmore for help. This novel is gothic in nature with a bitter, grieving hero, spectres and a massive black dog call Devil. If the gargoyles at the entrance to the estate were not enough to put Harriet off from finding help for her coachman, the Duke of Frostmore made sure that she was made aware of her precarious situation. This novel is generally well written and emotive with suspense, romance, and eerie feelings. Despite a last-minute race against time to rescue Harriet, the story does end on a gentle note with the healing of wounded hearts.

An Unwelcome Proposal by Bree Wolf: Christine Dansby is stubborn, cynical, high spirited, inventive and rebellious. However, at heart, she is compassionate and kind. She just does not believe in marriage for herself, as she doesn't expect anything good to happen in life unless she has full control over every situation. In an attempt to assist her sister after her husband's accident, Christine concocts a plan that puts her in Wesley Everett’s orbit. He has been attracted to her ever since he met her, but Christine is very firm about letting him know that his chances of marriage to her are non-existent. It takes making a plan such as Christine would concoct, for Wesley to finally get her attention and make her second guess her outlook on life. Although a clean romance, this one is far from sweet as Christine is hardly the kind of woman to engender sympathetic feelings. I enjoyed Wesley's character, his firm stand with Christine and his honourable nature.

I received a copy of this boxset as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.

TAMING MY CHRISTMAS ROGUE - Tammy Andresen has written a beautiful, fun & romantic Christmas story with a lovable rake & an innocent lady! It's a book that you will turn the last page & feel happy with a smile on your face.

Lord Andrew "Drew" Maddox is a third son, handsome, works hard with his properties that make money but most of all a renowned rogue. He has recently become enamored with a lady he met a few months ago, she is an innocent & she has been invited to spend Christmastide with his family. Since he is never attracted to virtuous ladies & he has no intention of marrying, he decides he needs to kiss her & her lack of experience will settle his lust & he will be able to resume his roguish life.
Miss Danielle "Dani" Frazier is a beautiful, innocent & shy lady who is sort of looking for a husband & she would bring money & property to a marriage. Dani has been invited to spend Christmastide with Drew's family for a week & she knows to ignore & avoid him which will be very hard to do since she has been attracted to him since they met. She needs to get through the week, meet with a couple of single men who are looking to marry & then go back home & start a serious husband search. Drew & Dani have their kiss under the mistletoe - what direction will it go & how will it change their futures, what about her possible suitors & Drew's unsavory lifestyle? The cast of characters is really wonderful & you'll find humor, danger, fun, romance & the perfect holiday ending.

I was gifted the Advanced Reader Copy of this book & all opinions are my own & have been voluntarily given.

WINTER WISHES/WISHES IN WINTER BY SCARLETT SCOTT - Alistair, Duke of Warwick is the "catch" for any lady of the ton but at 27 he had grown tired of the feminine pursuits. He is drowning is his late father's wastrel debts & more importantly, the lady he wishes to marry has been successful in avoiding him. Alistair has gained an invitation to Mr. Devereaux Winter & Lady Emilia Winter’s Christmas country house party & the lady will be in attendance. He also is privy to the fact that her parents had given her an ultimatum, either she choose a husband by the end of the Christmas party or she would be sent to be a lady's companion. He must find a way to convince Freckles of his sincerity in changing his ways & along with that her large dowry would pay his father's debts & help in rebuilding the dukedom.

Lady Lydia Brownlow's parents have insisted she make a decision on a husband or be faced with being a companion to the Marchioness of & her half dozen ill-mannered Corgis. They will be attending a Christmas house party & there will be several "fortune hunter" men looking for a wife & dowry to set themselves up in life. Lydia was also aware that Warwick will be in attendance, her brother's best friend, a rake & the only male she knows she cannot resist. She has known him all of her life & tagged after the two boys throughout her childhood & she has been enamored with him as long as she can remember. Lydia is fully aware that she must avoid him because resisting him is hopeless & he is just another fortune hunter.

Alistair & Freckles have a wonderful adventure with his pursuit of her & her refusal to believe his sincerity. The bantering, humor, chase, romance, confessions, love & a HEA were so entertaining & an excellent holiday tale to put you in a happy holiday mood!

I was gifted the Advanced Reader Copy of this book & all opinions are my own & have been voluntarily given.

This was a mixed bag for me but overall really enjoyed this collection.

Taming my Christmas Rogue by Tammy Andresen - really liked this one and the chemistry between the two. Plus I enjoy the reformed rogue stories

His Lady Smuggler by Tamara Gill - I don't usually like spy or smuggling stories so I read this one last. The smuggling wasn't a huge part of the story, which was a plus for me. I liked the writing and the banter between the two but I did not like the heroine's choices she made.

Christmas Seduction by Samantha Holt - Writing a story about an already married couple can be tricky for a romance, since that pre-marriage angst is usually what makes a good romantic narrative. But Samantha (who is among my favorite authors) does a great job with this and doesn't make the misunderstanding too drawn out or melodramatic

Wishes in Winter by Scarlett Scott - I really enjoyed this one except for the near end. I didn't like how the heroine handled the big reveal but still a very good read overall

Devil at the Gates by Lauren Smith - This was among my favorite stories and again, well written and a good amount of romantic tension. This time, though, I had a huge issue with the hero's decision made for her safety. It was a ludicrous decision and only made to direct the plot in a particular direction (which I knew it was headed towards but had hoped the avenue would have been more believable). Despite that, it's still one of my favorites.

An Unwelcome Proposal by Bree Wolf - this was a tough one for me. I really enjoyed the banter and the tension between the two main characters and the writing was solid. The plot is basically two sisters who look exactly alike (don't think they were specifically called twins but alike enough to fool people). One sister has a husband whose recent injury makes him forget who she is. The other sister and the husband's brother have romantic interest that hasn't been acted upon - yet. So the sisters swap identities. Confused? It actually plays out better when you read it but at the ball when the two sisters come together again it was easy to lose track of who was who. This story is about the unwed sister and the brother and while reading it I thought the more interesting story would be the sister whose husband forgot her. Lo and behold, there IS another story for that part of the plot in this book, but after reading this story, I'm not sure I care to read the other half. Again, this story was well written and interesting enough that I will read other things by this author. I'm just not sure this will be my favorite story of hers.

So overall a very good collection and worth reading. Another thing though is the "Christmas" element isn't very prominent in some of the stories. Winter, yes. Christmas, no. I've found it to be a very fine line in holiday collections to make you feel like you're experiencing the holiday with the characters but not getting too bogged down in every detail. Even without a huge Christmas element, these are very good historic romances.

Taming my Christmas Rogue by Tammy Andresen - 2 stars

I liked the concept of this one, rake can't get an innocent off of his mind, she seems to hate him...but the writing just didn't do anything for me...

His Lady Smuggler by Tamara Gill - 3 stars

May has made the decision to enter a convent because she doesn't want to be a burden to her younger brother once he takes over the for her father. But when Will shows up for the holidays, she thinks maybe she experience what happens between a man and a woman before giving her life to god. What could go wrong with that plan??

I normally love Gill's work, but this one fell flat for me. I didn't really like either of the characters...

Christmas Seduction by Samantha Holt - 4 Stars

It was an arranged marriage, but both wanted to make it work. But Alexander ends up abandoning his wife. But this Christmas, he is coming for a visit. Can these two find their way back to one another.

I enjoyed reading Emma and Alexander's story. Because of a misunderstanding they end up spending the last year apart from one another. I did get a little frustrated and kept saying to myself that if they would just talk to one another, there would be so much frustration...

Winter Wishes by Scarlett Scott - 4 stars

Lydia and Alastair have known each other since they were children and Lydia has loved him for just as long. So when he starts to show interest in her as someone other than his best friend's little sister. She can hardly believe it. She thinks he is just teasing her.

Alastair has just recently opened his eyes to the woman that Lydia has become. He has determined that she is the only one for him. But he also needs her dowry to save his estate.

Lydia is determined not to marry someone that just wants her money. She wants to be wanted for herself. What will happen when she learns that Alastair needed her money...?

I really liked Lydia and Alastair's story. I loved watching these two interact and banter back and forth. This is my first story by Scott, but I'll definitely be back for more!

Devil at the Gates by Lauren Smith - 4 stars

Harriet is on the run from her horrible stepfather when the carriage she is riding in becomes damaged. With the driver injured, she must travel to the nearest estate for help. The only problem is the owner of that estate is known as Devil of Dover. Does she dare to go there?

Redmond is devastated by the loss of his wife and brother and just wants to be left alone. This has left him with quite a reputation. When Harriet shows up on his door step, his first thoughts are to do something to get her to run away. He didn't count on her challenging him to a duel and winning!

Being injured and without a driver, Harriet end up staying at Redmond's estate. She sees the part of that he doesn't show the outside world. Could she be happy her or will her stepfather catch up with her?

I really enjoyed Harriet and Redmond's story! Paranormal is not normally my thing, but a few short visits form some ghosts are ok and I really enjoyed this in this story. This was a very enjoyable quick read!

An Unwelcome Proposal by Bree Wolf - 4 stars

Christine has no plans to ever marry, but should would like to take a lover. When she runs into Wesley, she believes that she has found the perfect man to take as a lover.

Can these two come to an understanding that will make both of them happy?

This is my first book by Wolf and I really enjoyed it. I loved all the bantering between Christine and Wesley. I would have rated it a 5/5 but there were some parts, that left me a little confused....

TAMING MY CHRISTMAS ROUGE: by Tammy Andresen ⭐⭐⭐
Frenenimies. A week long Christmastide country house party. Danielle and Drew, what a couple. Danielle furiously resisting every instinct, every urge to be close to Drew. Drew was obsessed with Danielle and made no secret of it.
HIS LADY SMUGGLER: by Tamara Gill ⭐⭐⭐⭐
HOT and Steamy. A sea captain and a soon to be nun. May at four and twenty thought her marriage days were over. Not to be a burden on her younger brother she decided to become a nun. Until a dashing rogue from the sea came to visit her father. William was an earl. But he spent his time on the sea. He found peace there and was far away from the judgmental feelings of his family. Little did they know that their lives intertwined before they even met.
CHRISTMAS SEDUCTION: by Samantha Holt ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Estranged newly married couple, a misunderstanding parted them. Now Alexander has returned to his Scottish manor to do his duty and sire an heir. Poor Emma suffered from lack of confidence. She thought he did not want her because she did not know how to be his wife. This is one time where being an innocent and naïve had its downfall for they were both virgins when they married and neither knew what to do.
WISHES IN WINTER: by Scarlett Scott ⭐⭐⭐
An insecure aging debutante and a duke near penury. I liked the overall storyline of a young lady, Lydia, making a last-ditch effort to find a husband at a Christmastide house party. Her brother’s best friend, Alistair, a duke, needed an heiress to absolve him of his father’s debts. He could have married anyone of available women at the Christmas party but he went for love and he loved his Freckles aka Lydia. The problem I had with this story is that Lydia was way too negative. She did not believe a word Alistair said. That she was beautiful, that he loved her. She was sure he was lying. Anything and everything he proclaimed she condemned as a lie. It took too much time to convince her otherwise. Then after the wedding Lydia found out about his depleted coffers became upset knowing he lied to her about loving her and anything else he told her and she believed. She realized he only wanted her dowry. What a mess.
DEVIL AT THE GATES: by Lauren Smith MISSING FROM BOOK
AN UNWELCOME PROPOSAL: by Bree Wolf ⭐⭐⭐1/2
Stubborn woman and patient man. Christine Dansby does not believe in marriage because of her preconceived ideas that love does not last. She tries to entice her sister Catherine’s brother-in-law to give her a lesson in what happens between married men and women. Wesley Everett is a second son. His brother William is married to Catherine, Christine’s younger sister. When William loses five years of his memory which includes his meeting, courting and wedding to Catherine, Christine comes up with a hair brain idea. For it to work Wesley and Catherine have to be in on it. While the plan is played out, Wesley and Christine come to care for each other. But she only wants a physical relationship and Wesley will not give it to her. I liked the overall story, but Christine’s character was such a downer all the way to the end. Stubborn, foolish and concerned more about her ideals than Wesley’s feelings. It was okay to read.

I read only Devil at the Gates from Lauren Smith. I appreciate what she was trying to do here, but I'm afraid it fell flat. Luckily, her style of writing, which I really enjoy, made up for quite a few issues I had with the plot. Had it been poorly written, I wouldn't have been able to overlook some things. The paranormal aspects of the plot were perfect. Of course, they required some suspension of disbelief, but it was reasonable. It's what one would expect from a paranormal novel.

I loved the opening. Redmond is a sympathetic character, as are Thomas and Millicent. Redmond is shown to be honorable, sensitive, and selfless, as well as deeply hurt. Harriet is also a sympathetic character and I cared about all of them.

SPOILER ALERT:
This is where things go off the rails. George Halifax is presented as a larger than life unstoppable villain. In the face of that, Redmond acts in a cowardly manner. Rather than keep Harriet near him so he can protect her (for only a month!), he opts to send her out of the country so she'll be safe. He's a Duke! I think he could have protected her. As if that weren't stupid enough, he sends her toward the port at Dover with only a coachman to protect her. When they arrive, the coachman helps her from the coach then leaves her standing there to wait for him while he inquires about passage on a ship. It was clear what was going to happen.

After George kidnaps Harriet to take her home, they stop at an inn on the way. There, she tries to fight him off with a steak knife. Next thing we know, they are grappling at the edge of a cliff. How did she manage to get past him and past his goons to run away? Toward the cliffs! I liked that Harriet was a courageous fighter, but I don't see how she got out of the room at the inn, and out of the inn, and made it all the way to the cliffs before George caught up to her. All in all, there were too many times that I needed to shake my head and think, why are they doing something so stupid? Lauren Smith has some much better books out there. I'd recommend reading one of those. That said, I think collections of a variety of authors are generally a great deal, so go for it!

I've only actually had the chance to read one of the novellas from this collection, so that is what my review will focus on.
Devil at the Gates by Lauren Smith
Perfect for Christmas, Devil at the Gates is a gothic style romance complete with ghosts, broken hearts and an evil villain for our heroine to escape from. Harriet's mother is dying and she is about to fall into the hands of her evil stepfather, who's feelings towards her are far from fatherly. She escapes, only to have her carriage run into trouble and she is forced to find shelter at the house of the notorious Duke of Frostmore. After suffering heartbreak himself, years earlier he has cultivated his reputation as a devil and cut himself off from society.
I haven't read a spooky gothic romance in quite some time, but this one certainly ticked all the boxes. Harriet isn't completely helpless, but when it comes to fighting off her stepfather, she could certainly do with some assistance.
I really enjoyed this quick read. The Devil of Dover is far from being the monster that he first appears and the more that Harriet gets to know him, the more that they fall in love. There's an almost Beauty and the Beast feel to this story, although rather than being a physical beast, it's more to do with the Duke battling his own demons. A great read for the Christmas period.

First, I have to say this collection of 6 stories are all from authors who I have enjoyed reading in the past, so I was very excited to start this book. As of now I have read 3 of the books, so here is the 3 books reviews.

Taming My Christmas Rogue by Tammy Andresen. I think I am a little in love with Drew – who could not love a rake who can not get a shy lady (Danielle) out of his thoughts and reforms himself to be with her. Danielle who is shy and only wants to be loved for herself and have her own family. Together they are perfect. Tammy Andresen writes a nice story that before you realize it you are done, and you are smiling and happy.

Winter Wishes by Scarlette Scott is set in the middle of the Wicked Winters series but is definitely a stand-alone book. In this book I adore Alistair and Lydia. They are such a nice cute couple. Alistar fell in love with Lydia but he kept a secret from her. Lydia could not believe Alistar a Duke would really want her. This was another enjoyable read by Scarlette Scott.

An Unwelcome Proposal by Bree Woff. I already read this book around 1 ½ years ago when I read the whole series Forbidden Love. When re-reading this book it reminded me how much I loved this series, so I am going to go and re-read the whole Forbidden Love series again. Great job Bree Wolf.

This is a collection of Christmas stories that is sure to please. Each of six wonderfully talented authors gifts readers with a story where Christmas Wishes come true and happily ever after is possible.

I enjoyed all of the stories. Tammy Andresen’s My Christmas Rogue (Drew and Danielle), Winter Wishes by Scarlett Scott (Alastair and Lydia), and An Unwelcome Proposal by Bree Wolf (Wesley and Christine) provide a delightful potpourri of lively endearing stories.

I had read only one of them before. Samantha Holt’s Christmas Seduction, the tale of a couple’s Christmas reunion after a terrible misunderstanding has become one of my favorite rereads during the holidays.

His Lady Smuggler by Tamara Gill is a sweet and raucous adventure. The sizzling attraction between May, the lady smuggler, and William, an agent for the Crown, is perplexing for them. They find it hard to move past the disagreement, but becoming a nun, really May?

Lauren Smith’s Devil At the Gate is the oddest Christmas Tale in the set. I am a big fan of Gothic Romance, and Harriet and Red’s story has everything – a scary hero, a heroine in need of rescue, ghosts, an evil villain, AND Christmas.

I happily recommend this enjoyable set of Happy Christmas tales.

LOVE, LONELINESS, UNUSUAL

3 STARS for this variety of Christmas Novellas set in the Regency Historical Era. They are very interesting, some funny, one put tears in my eyes and they definitely have their share of Christmas Cheer & decorations depending on storyline. However, I simply didn't feel the gotta stay up & fight sleep ignore everything else & everybody kind of I had to read the stories or any 1 story, love this where I was lost in the story happily. Unfortunately even with Christmas Novellas, I like to be almost delighted and I wasn't; however, these were good stories well worth reading, interesting & I have no problem recommending them because I know others who don't read as much as me or who may be younger, or just now have discovered this type of book subject will love it & the stories. It has some terrific authors that I regularly read series of along with a few I had not read. Good characters in all, well written, & mystery in some. My favorite character in the book was Devil, I just loved him. Now, he was worth reading it for ummm just love him. Makes me smile!

Taming My Christmas Rogue is the second book in the Miracle Express series. It is also the last book in the author’s Taming the Duke’s Heart series, but can be read as a standalone. The book was fast paced and short but the characters were well developed. Lord Andrew Maddox and Danielle Frazier had meet when Danielle’s cousin, Sophie, became Drew’s brother guardian. He had been captivated by her since then but was a rogue with no intentions of marriage. Danielle was shy, which made finding a husband hard. She was hoping to meet someone at the Christmas house party. Drew’s idea of them sharing a kiss to get rid of their attraction did not work and he didn’t like the idea of her marrying another man. Was Drew willing to face his feelings for Danielle and give up bachelorhood? This was a great book and short so it was easy to read in one sitting. The book also contained the prologue to the author’s new series, the Lords of Scandals, which sounds like another great series.

I received an ARC from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Lauren's Smith's contribution to this holiday collection is Devil at the Gates, a delightfully shivery gothic romance. When Harriet is forced to leave her mother's deathbed, fleeing from the cruel and unwelcome advances of her stepfather, she has no idea her headlong flight will land her on the doorstep of Redmond, Duke of Frostmere, locally known as the Devil of Dover.

Did the Duke murder his wife? What really happened on the cliffs when both she and his brother died? Can Harriet elude the evil clutches of her <> stepfather, George?

Enjoy this wonderful gothic Christmas romance and find out for yourself if Harriett and Redmond are doomed from the start or if they get their own happily-ever-after - you won't be sorry!

I received an ARC of Lauren Smith's Devil at the Gates in exchange for an honest review. I can't wait to read the remainder of A Lady's Christmas Rake!

This is a delightful Christmas-themed box set and I was excited to discover some new historical romance authors. The author who originally drew me to this boxed set is Scarlett Scott.

Wishes in Winter by Scarlett Scott: Lydia Brownlow has known Alastair, the Duke of Warwick since she was a little girl. He calls her "Freckles" and she assumes the term means that he disregards her. Unbeknownst to her they have carried torches for one another for quite some time! Alastair attempts to court Lydia but she is skeptical of his motives. Alastair is truly a fortune hunter but his intentions toward Lydia are genuine. Can these two overcome all obstacles to have their HEA?

This boxed set was the perfect way to unwind next to the wood stove on my Thanksgiving vacay! Ive discovered lots of new authors to binge on.

This is a wonderful set of shorter stories revolving around Christmas. All heart warming and make you want to sit in front of a fireplace on a snowy evening with the glow of Christmas lights in the back ground. They are the perfect collection to get you in the holiday mood. All beautiful, romantic stories. I very much enjoyed reading them and loved what each one brought to the table. I don’t think I can pick one in particular that I liked the most because I enjoyed them all. From foes to lovers, women resigned to going away to a nunnery who are secret smugglers, to estranged spouses finding love again, there’s a little bit of everything.

A Lady's Christmas Rake is a collection of historical romance Christmas books all wrapped up in one package. Each story is by a different author and the stories aren't connected to each other, they're all standalones. There are no cliff-hangers. Authors included in this collection are: Tammy Andresen, Tamara Gill, Samantha Holt, Scarlett Scott, Lauren Smith and Bree Wolf. I totally enjoyed this collection.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from Bookfunnel. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Inability

I am truly amazed that it took them as long as it did to finally make love. All she had to do was grab him by his privates and lead him to the bed. He should have already given instructions to his staff that they were not to be disturbed. Any violations of this order were to be shot and thrown outside in the snow. I would think a Duke and Duchess would get this love making done in two chapters. FCOL it's not that difficult.

Six very different love stories set around Christmas, includes some smuggling, spirits (not just the drinking kind), children and lots of snow. Some stories more amusing than others. Some more heartbreaking.
Another great Christmas anthology.
